About the Artist
Mountain was formed in 1969 by guitarist Leslie West and bassist and former Cream producer Felix Pappalardi The two met while West was a member of Long Island R&B band the Vagrants When West left the Vagrants to record a solo album it was agreed that Felix Pappalardi would produce the said album which was entitled Mountain. The sessions for the album went so well that it was decided that the pair would form a band and the band would take its name from Leslie’s album. So it was that Mountain was born. Joining Leslie and Felix was drummer N.D. Smart who had also played on Leslie’s album and keyboard player Steve Knight. The band started to gig and whilst the response was positive no one would have dreamed how big the audience would be for the bands fourth gig. In August 1969 Mountain along with the likes of the Who, Jefferson Airplane, Crosby Stills Nash and Young and of course Jimi Hendrix played at the Woodstock festival in upstate New York.

Following this momentous performance however the band decided on a change in personnel and Canadian drummer Corky Laing was in at the expense of ND Smart. Their debut album, 1970's Mountain Climbing, went gold, thanks in part to the hard rock classic "Mississippi Queen." There was however other tracks such as Yasgur’s Farm, Never In My Life and a cover of the Jack Bruce song Theme For An Imaginary Western that would all form the backbone of the bands live set for the next thirty years. Despite the comings and goings of various members over the years including the tragic murder of founder member Felix Pappalardi the core of West and Laing has continued to work as Mountain and in a live situation the band have rarely been bettered.

Product Description
The performances contained on the Mountain Bootleg Series are drawn from various stages of the bands career from the very early years when the band first formed through to recent gigs undertaken by the band. All the performances come from the personal archives of both Leslie West and Corky Laing and whilst some of the performances are not sonically perfect the quality of the performances are never in question and as Corky Laing says "Some of the performances are real interesting". I couldn’t have said it better myself.

This historic performance has been re mastered for release from the original tape that has been in the bands archive for more than thirty years.

2 out of 5 stars Great Music, Terrible Sound.......2006-07-02

I wish that the sound on the CD was anywhere close to "Flowers of Evil", if it had been I would have given it 5 stars. The music is really great live Mountain - maybe the best I've heard, but the sound is terrible.

5 out of 5 stars "best played loud".......2006-04-08

ok, this ain't your sonicly perfect CD but if you close your eyes and imagine you're surrounded by people you can pretend you are AT the concert.

The song mix is great but the best is "dreams of milk and honey/dream sequence" - it's not as good as the one from Isle of Wight but it still kicks [...].

If you like mountain, and you want to hear them when they were young and full of hard charging energy then buy this CD. And go see them now - Leslie and Corky are STILL touring and they still can kick some serious [...]! ;)

4 out of 5 stars For Mountain Fans.......2006-01-10

I purchased this cd for the express purpose of hearing "Dreams of Milk & Honey/Dream Sequence." It wasn't bad, but the "Flowers of Evil" version is much better. Like the other reviewers, I saw the original line-up three times. Mountain live was awesome. If they opened for a more prominent act, I would have hated to go on after them. "Nantucket Sleighride" has been performed better on other cds. However, "Mississippi Queen" and "Silverpaper" are extended versions and are quite excellent. At their best, Mountain was always a guitar fueled, jam band. This cd, while quite good, should not be one's introduction to Mountain. As for Steve Knight, I read somewhere, that he and the other band members did not get along well. Thus you rarely hear of him and his contributions to the band. I agree "PLAY THIS MUSIC LOUD."

5 out of 5 stars The best.......2005-10-30

music...the live..
here and all bootlegs a pleasure of improvisation...
and that since the 70's...
More!!

4 out of 5 stars Great for fans, not for casual purchasers.......2005-10-14

Great performance featuring all the usual favourites. Sound quality is good without being brilliant but the main failing of this and all the others in the series is the packaging. I know it's an official bootleg but we should be getting more than bootleg-level packaging. At least on this CD we know who the band are (some of the later volumes are more a Leslie West solo show but it's difficult to tell as there are never any personnel details). This performance highlights the contribution Steve Knight made to the sound. He always seems to be the forgotten one compared to Leslie, Felix and Corky but shouldn't be. Whatever happened to him?
