Album Description
Jim's cutting edge, clever, quiet style has earned him an unprecedented number of appearances on both Letterman and Conan O'Brien. His special, "Comedy Central Presents: Jim Gaffigan", remains one of the highest rated for all stand up specials on the network. He's a national club staple, and for the past two years has had recurring roles on "That '70s Show" and "Ed". He's also appeared in more than two dozen feature films ranging from big budget ("Three Kings", "Road Trip") to indie ("Final", "Igby Goes Down", "Entropy"). "Doin' My Time" puts all of his classic material on one CD from a one night stand in Seattle, and the DVD compiles his best Comedy Central performances, including the highly rated "Comedy Central Presents".
Customer Reviews:
reading the fine print.......2007-04-14
perhaps the information included the fact that it comes with a bonus DVD...but we missed it and now we have 2 of his DVDs...i hope we can find a use for it...expensive mistake?
Hilarious album from a very unique comedian.......2007-04-02
Jim should be the most popular comedian in America right now, he's definately the funniest at the moment in my opinion. His material on being lazy and hot pockets is classic and this came with a bonus dvd so it's a hell of a deal. Check out Beyond The Pale it's even funnier!
Hillarious as Always.......2007-04-01
It's Jim Gaffigan, what more can I say? This CD is beyond Excellent.
*Caution*: listen to this CD at your own risk while driving, I almost drove off the road laughing so hard
Smoking Babies, Manatees, and Orville Redenbacher.......2007-02-02
Comedy CDs are an iffy recommendation. What's funny today might bore you tomorrow. Some jokes are only funny the first time. Jim Gaffigan's CD, "Doin' My Time," scores high on the replay factor. Perhaps it's his delivery (dry self-deprecation with a twist of smug). Perhaps it's his avant-garde style of humor (he spends about a quarter of the time pretending to be a critical female member of his own show, weaving "her" comments with his). Perhaps it's just his voice, which has a malleable whine to it that never gets annoying and which makes his self-mockery seem humorously authentic instead of just patronizing or pathetic.
Part of it is definitely the humor itself. Whether his jokes make bizarre 180's ("I used to smoke. Yeah. Smoking's real addictive. But you know what's REALLY addictive? Heroin."), or whether their humor lies in their dead ends; whether they take the "didja ever notice?" concept and snap it in half (his "Hot Pocket" and bottled water/Mexican food bits are a good example of this), or whether they're just plain crude, grouchy, silly and dumpy, they all stand up to repeated listenings. There are a few times where you get the impression that the joke -- such as his bit on glasses -- would work a lot better if you could see the man (and, in fact, most of them are like that; Jim is almost as much fun to watch as he is to listen to), but none of them fail to be laugh-worthy because of it. Pasty, flabby, and grumpy, though he may be, Jim Gaffigan is also a funny, funny man, and this is a funny, funny CD.
(NOTE: This product comes with a short DVD of his Comedy Central appearance, which is much cleaner than the act to be found on the CD.)
Love it! Love it! Love it! .......2007-01-10
Beyond the Pale is my all time favorite...Doin' My Time runs a close second.
Gaffigan is a staple for anybody who enjoys stand up.

If one's notion of "world music" promises a touch of the exotic and indigenous, often overlooked is the fact that the influence of western pop music has seeped into every corner of the globe, creating a hybrid that's often more than merely the sum of its influences. Theater vet Brightman steps into that pan-cultural hall of mirrors here, wedding her fascination with the music and rhythms of the "forbidden places" (the title's Arabic meaning) of the Middle East to her own oft ethereal vocal charms and rock-solid sense of drama. And if the diva's equally sound crossover sensibilities (and that of longtime producer Frank Peterson) sometimes mire it in familiar world-beat pastiche, Brightman's charmed muse manages some transcendent moments nonetheless. Her musical borrowings (Borodin for the title track; Puccini's *Madame Butterfly* for "It's a Beautiful Day") are as compelling as her choice of collaborators: classical violin star Nigel Kennedy and Iraqi vocalist Kadim Al Sahir add compelling touches to the weary timeliness of "The War is Over." The musical influences range from Europe across the Mediterranean and as far East as the Indian roots of "Bollywood" composer A.R. Rahman's "The Journey Home" and Brightman's own "You Take My Breath Away" to evocative recastings of the emblematic standards "Stranger in Paradise" and Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World," while ex-Killing Joke keyboardist Jaz Coleman provides the savory East-meets-West orchestrations that ensure Brightman's star turns the seamless foundations they deserve. --Jerry McCulley

New to Sarah Brightman.......2007-03-12
I'm very new to Sarah brightman's music and I enjoy this CD. I think she has an amazing voice. Very talented young woman and this cd was very relaxing and joyful to listen to. I like to learn and heard more from Sarah Brightman.
Stranger in Paradise - More Like Stranger in a Lost Cause.......2006-12-30
I'm not throughly pleased with this album! This CD is only good if you know how to dance in a Middle-Easters fashion. About half of each track is dominated by all orchestrations and no Sarah. Plus, Pop-Sarah isn't really for me. I much prefer the Classical-Sarah. Some of the tracks are okay, like "Harem", "The Journey Home", "Beautiful", and "Stranger in Paradise". Really, this is a good CD for your collection, but I wouldn't listen to it on a 24/7 basis.
No voice like hers in the world.......2006-10-01
I own this cd. I saw her in person at the "Harem" concert. Never had I heard or seen any voice like this. What a performer, best concert I'd ever seen. Beautiful voice, I can never get enough of Sarah Brightman's music. It is so comforting at times. I have all her music and this cd makes you wonder, how can she top this? Thank you Sarah Brightman for giving us your beautiful gift of music.
Brilliant Brightman, Her best CD........2006-09-18
Sarah is just the best, she can hit any note and her individuality shines on this CD. She sings "The Journey Home" from the musical Bombay Dreams and her voice just soars. "Harem", "Mysterious Ways" and "You Take My Breah Away" are songs that take me to dreamland. Amazing! A master piece!

With the help of some friends (James Taylor and Alison Krauss lend some vocal support), the trio of Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, and Mark O'Connor have created yet another fascinating hybrid of chamber music and bluegrass. This follow-up to 1996's Appalachia Waltz is filled with highly lyrical string passages, a homage or two to Copland, and plenty of tracks where Meyer's bass vamps with the best of them. This is reflective (and relaxing) music, lacking the intricate structure of classical music and the rough edges of folk. But, boy, is it catchy! Yo-Yo Ma fans may be disappointed to hear that--aside from the gorgeous "Duet for Cello and Bass"--the cellist takes more of a supportive role on this disc. Still, this is fun music, more intimate than Short Trip Home (Meyer's other crossover project for Sony), but still lively (just check out "1B" or "Caprice for Three"). --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Best on the Planet!.......2006-03-24
These are flawless preformances of great music by some of the most talented artists on the planet. Slumber My Darling will leave you so relaxed you'll have to remember to breathe. The reels will bring you to your feet. This music reaches the soul as well as the ear.
Stilted.......2005-12-15
I suppose you will enjoy this if you really like Yo-Yo Ma at his most boring. This is glorified elevator music and about as interesting.
Walking the trail.......2005-08-07
I actually heard this cd while having a root canal done at the dentist's office. I find the music so wonderful and the vocal segments are great. It does make you feel like you are walking the Appalachian Trail...and makes a root canal painless!
Superb concert.......2005-08-02
I have bought two copies of this disc -- one for my car. The music is wonderful, and the performances are memorable. There's a DVD version, which is equally good. The performers obviously loved working together, and that's fully evident.
Too Studied.......2005-06-22
Two of my favorite CDs in the last couple of years were "Obrigado Brazil" and "In Full Swing" by Yo Yo Ma and Mark O'Connor respectively. I found both of those CDs to be fine examples of genre-busting joyful music making. So when I saw these guys paired here, I snapped it up. Unfortunately, I was disappointed.
The music throughout most of the CD sounds too labored, too studied. It is, frankly, not that inspiring. The playing throughout is, of course, of the highest calibre and the recorded sound excellent. But there is no hint of the exhuberance of Folk or Bluegrass which is the supposed inspiration for the disc. The guest spots by James Taylor and Alison Krauss are good but they sound like outtakes from their own CDs, these songs are out of context here. (But note how many other Amazon reviews reference their contributions as reasons for loving the CD. Perhaps so many five star ratings because these people need broader musical exposure?)
Too many critics over intellectualize. I base my ratings on one simple criterion: How much did the music move me? In this case, not much.

Truly beautiful, truly audiophile.......2006-10-27
Mr Hank Jones is a magician. His fingers are magic. His spirit is gold. This record is the most beautiful thing in these days. In adition, the sound of this one in a hi-end audio equipment is splendid.
Thanks Hank & your team (incluiding crew's studio recording).
swept away.......2005-08-22
For my Father by Hank Jones is my first cd by this artist. It won't be my last. There's an etherial quality to the performance on this cd; it kind of creeps up and gently sweeps you away to a very pleasant space indeed. The highest quality of performance coupled with an excellent choice of material, and first rate engineering all make it happen. Highly recommended.
For My Father Review.......2005-08-04
This is a great CD. The selection of tunes is outstanding and the audio quality is great. The music is easy to listen to and Hank Jones is a master at playing the piano.
For My Father.......2005-07-28
Very tasty. About as good as gets. Quite listenable.

A Masterwork by a Jazz Legend.......2005-07-20
This album will remind everyone why Hank Jones is considered a legend. This straightforward interpretation of some obscure entries from the book of jazz standards is outstanding. This is a distinct presentation of elegance. Jones is almost playful in anchoring the rhythm and weaving the background of sound with a hip, relaxed swing. This album defines Jones' jazz style, nothing is wasted.

The Most Relaxing Classical Album In the World Eveer, Volume II.......2006-08-28
Good selection of music, poorly performed and badly arranged. Good album for a tag sale. Same comment applies for Volume I.
Great music listein to while you read in bed.......2005-08-21
I have listened to this CD for the last several years before going to sleep at night. I love classical music, and this is great music to help make my soul feel at peace and unwind after a taxing day.
A must buy for the non-snobbish classical music fan........2004-10-22
I bought Vol. 1 of this series and was quite satisfied, but I have to say I'm more than satisfied with this one. If you can just mellow out and enjoy some great pieces, you'll love this CD. #15 on Disc 2 is almost worth the price alone!
A bliss of spirit........2004-09-18
That's disc will open You a wonderful, beautiful world of sounds, their harmony & emotion : you'll feel your heart full of
Joy, Tears, Love.
Good LUCK!
Boring.......2004-05-11
Yes this CD will put you to sleep in minutes. Its the most boring uninspiring classical music. The first CD was very good but this Vol. 2 is like most movie sequels....AWFUL !

Customer Reviews:
At The Movies by Andre Rieu.......2007-05-20
Andre Rieu brings a warmth and pop-like aire to his music. Here he plays popular music with a classical orchestra and adds his special ingredients to it ie:humor (musical jokes for the serious listener),fun,light-heartedness.It's a band of very talented musicians having alot of fun as is evident in the playing and especially if you've seen them in concert.I can "hear" the smiles on their not serious faces by their style of playing...less staccato and with more feeling.Andre and company swing and dance through every track climaxing on Ravel's Bolero from the movie "10".
very beautiful.......2007-01-09
This cd is very beautiful. It captures the songs wonderfully. The orchestra does a fine job.
Refreshing Music.......2006-11-03
Andre Rieu presents wonderful songs in a very inspirational way. They are to be enjoyed as "dinner music" or just for times when the TV is off and you need some "quiet time". It is a great grouping of melodies.
from texas--AND FROM A MUSIC LOVER.......2006-08-30
ANDRE RIEU TAKES US ON A WONDERFUL TRIP BACK IN TIME TO THE MOVIES YOU CAN=T FORGET AND THE MUSIC THAT MADE THEM CLASSICS. DO BUY IT. IT IS A TREASURE...
Andre Rieu - Music for the masses.......2006-08-10
Sometimes you just want enjoyable music as a backdrop to the job at hand. I turn to Andre to get me through these events. Probably not a glowing endorsement, but if you know of Mr. Rieu's feelings about music, he would just smile and nod his head. This is music to just enjoy for the sake of music - and that is a good thing.

Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05
I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!
A Good One!.......2006-11-10
This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

Customer Reviews:
Not My Style.......2007-05-11
This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!
Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28
For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.
Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16
This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.
Western Music.......2005-07-29
I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."
A great follow-up.......2003-08-29
This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

Album Description
The late Karen Dalton has been the muse for countless folk rock geniuses, from Bob Dylan to Devendra Banhart, from Lucinda Williams to Joanna Newsom. Legendary singer Lacy J. Dalton actually adopted her hero's surname as her own when she started her career in country music. Karen Dalton had that affect on people - her timeless, aching, blues-soaked, Native American spirit inspired both Dylan & The Band's 'Katie's Been Gone' (on The Basement Tapes) and Nick Cave's 'When I First Came To Town' (from Henry's Dream). Recorded over a six month period in 1970/71 at Bearsville, In My Own Time was Dalton's only fully planned and realized studio album. The material was carefully selected and crafted for her by producer/musician Harvey Brooks, the Renaissance man of rock-jazz who played bass on Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited and Miles' Bitches Brew. It features ten songs that reflected Dalton's incredible ability to break just about anybody's heart - from her spectral evocation of Joe Tate's 'One Night of Love', to the dark tragedy of the traditional 'Katie Cruel'. Known as a great interpreter of choice material, Dalton could master both country and soul genres with hauntingly pining covers of George Jones' 'Take Me' and Holland-Dozier Holland's 'How Sweet It Is'.
Customer Reviews:
Great singer.......2007-05-26
Karen Dalton is a name that could have been forgotten. You hear about her a little in the Bob Dylan biographies. Then you would hear people like Nick Cave and Devendra Banhart talking about her. This is an amazing album. It first came out in 1971. It kind of reminds me when I was listening to a lot of Candi Staton a few years ago. Dalton has a great voice. Blues and gospel influence it. "Something On Your Mind" is just an amazing song. The chord changes are mind-blowing. Dalton also does a few songs that have been popularized by others, such as "When A Man Loves A Women" and "How Sweet It Is." She really puts her own stamp on them. She sings like a blues singer but the music is mostly like folk rock. "Katie Cruel" was a big influence on Nick Cave. The opening to "In A Station" is so great and evocative. The band sounds like it goes through ten different instruments. There is a great banjo sound on "Same Old Man." The song "One Night Of Love" sounds very modern. This is a great album of ten solid tunes. This is definitely a big deal.
Definitely Worth a Look..........2007-04-12
I took a gamble and got this album on the strengh of the rave reviews and favourable comparisons to other acts I like. The artist is also recommended by one B.Dylan, a certain N.Cave and others. I have to say I am always wary of artist endorsements since I feel they will often be looking at some quality in the music as it relates to their own or may be just know the person.
My initial reaction as the first track hit me was WOW the gamble paid off, very different voice and a wonderul delivery, almost cracking with emotion on each note, one of the most amazing performances I've heard in quite some time.Unfortunately I would have to say only a few other tracks match it.
It perhaps isn't made clear elsewhere that there is no self-penned material on the album so track selection is crucial. Her voice doesn't suit all the songs chosen and the comparisons to Billy Holiday, whilst I can see certain similarities, are a little over-done.
This is NOT a slating;I do not regret buying the album as the best songs are well worth the purchase price, just don't expect "a great lost album" or you may be disappointed.
A final word on the packaging, while the music is paramount and such matters count for little if it is lacking, it must be said the CD is beautifully presented, the chunky cardboard sleeve comes with a substantial booklet featuring informative notes and some nice photos.
Good Record - Historically Significant.......2007-02-24
First off, ignore the two, one star reviews below. Considering the reference to American Idol on the one, clearly these folks never bothered to listen to the samples to get any kind of sense of what this artist was about or what they were in for. No doubt Billie Holiday, of whom Karen Dalton is reminiscent, wouldn't make it on AI either and these two reviewers would find no value in her as well. No knock to them or AI, to each their own, it's just a different world and mindset. AI is looking for pop superstars within the context of what that means today. It has no bearing on the larger world of highly talented artists who are working other avenues with other aspirations. It's like saying foreign or independent films are bad when you were expecting a Hollywood formulaic blockbuster.
Listen to the samples - that's what they are there for. My review assumes you have at least done that and you are attracted to what you heard. From that perspective, what we have here is the second of her two albums and the only one with a full band. Although the band is quite appropriate for her and producer Harvey Brooks' intentions were honorable, it doesn't work nearly as well as her first album, "It's So Hard To Tell Who Is Going To Love You The Best." That first album is pretty much all Karen accompanying herself on acoustic without a band. The album lacks the arguably misguided attempts at contemporary (at that time) songs like How Sweet It Is and When A Man Loves A Woman, both of which are on this album, In My Own Time. It's not that she does a bad job with them, indeed, it is an admirable accomplishment to deliver contemporary, highly familiar pop songs in her own unique style and have it come across as a believable interpretation, which is what she does here. But it is simply that the setting and the song choices on her previous album are so much more natural to her. The band and arrangements aren't there to threaten the power of her vocalization - her delivery and phrasing, which show so such conviction and understanding of the material.
If you listen to her and you like her style, you will like them both. Perhaps it's simply a matter of personal preference, but for the reasons stated, the first album is more intimate and satisfying, which isn't to say that this one isn't, just a little less so.
Can I have my money back, please??.......2007-02-13
I bought this CD based on a previous review. I know that Randy, Paula and Simon would not let Karen Dalton through to Hollywood and would probably look at each other in pure disbelief. I thought maybe I'm tone-deaf, so I let several other friends listen to the CD. They too just laughed and said, "NO THANKS". Keep your money and find some other artist or form of enjoyment, 'cause you won't find what you're looking for here. There's a reason why it took the studio so long to bring this artist to the digital age....
never accept reviewer;s word for it.......2007-01-24
should have known when dylan said what a great singer she was. will be selling this one used to the record store as soon as possible. surely not a hidden gem

Formally attired and seductively positioned, Yanni gazes out at you from the cover of this 1993 recording and--no description needed--tells you everything you need to know about the music that awaits inside. Here are a few additional details: In My Time is a 49-minute album of piano-based works with a distinct neoclassical flavor that is targeted specifically to Yanni's large and faithful female following. Its highlights: the shimmering tenderness of "In the Morning Light" and the gently caressing "To Take ... To Hold." Perhaps because this was his last album for Private Music, he elected to fill it in with two repeats from Dare to Dream, "Felitsa" and "In the Mirror." --Terry Wood
Customer Reviews:
It is not just beautiful music; it is a priceless panacea for your soul........2006-05-28
I am not a zealous Yanni fan and I do not write reviews very often. I, however, feel the urge to write something about this CD. Yes, it is beautiful and heart-touching as many other reviewers have already testified. Moreover, this CD is beyond relaxation music. It not only soothes your soul; it also elevates your spirit and enhances your physical well-being. I feel this CD, especially its two tracks One man dream and Felitsa, somehow works very well with water activities, be it swimming or spa. After vigorous swimming laps or hot spas, I turn on this CD and let the music take me into sound sleep and beautiful dreams. When I wake up, I feel fully charged and ready for anything. Even my eyesight gets sharpened. I look out to my garden and I see lush green, radiating red, vibrating yellow that I somehow usually miss. And my kids, my wife, my neighbors look more beautiful and happier than ever.
Awesome beyond words!.......2006-04-03
I have many of Yanni's CD's and have had the great fortune to see and hear him twice in concert. However, until I heard "In My Time", I don't believe that I had heard the essence of Yanni's heart and soul. This recording is personal; him and his piano. It draws one into the music and the emotions are felt. One can relate it to one's own life. The tenderness, the emotion, the gentleness....the passion, the caring...the beauty; it is all there. Yanni is the composer of this era who will go down in history with Mozart, Bach, Tchiakowsky and this CD shows why. If you like Yanni even a little, you cannot miss the thrill of this CD which will bring tears to your eyes and goosebumps to your body.
Wonderful piano solos.......2005-11-30
Mood elevating Piano Solos from the greatest composer of the world. Must listen tracks on this CD - "One mans dream", "In the mirror", "Felitsa" and "Until the last moment". Buy it and own it then you will never regret.
Beautiful.......2005-09-16
The most beatiful collection of piano music i've ever heard. Over the years I have bought this for at least a dozen people who became hooked on Yanni. "In My Time" is my favorite.
Bitter Sweet Music For The Soul.......2005-05-28
Yanni is perhaps the one artist who makes music that has somehow burrowed itself "deep inside" my soul. He has long been known for his breathtaking vistas, but they are not to be found on this album, instead what is heard here is music at its most basic, intimate level - mostly just piano and a few strings. Simplicity at its best.
To say that this album is simply uplifting would not do the music the justice it deserves - yet that is not to say that it is in any way shape or form, depressing. It is a rare thing indeed when art imitates life accurately - yet here it is found in all its glory.
All in all, there are many facets to what is heard here - too many to list - and what is heard must be deeply personal music to Yanni, as it shows itself in strong, genuine emotion that cannot be "faked" - and somehow he relates it in such a way that it comes across as music to live your life by. I know that sounds corny, but I can't explain it any other way. There are no sacharine sounds to be found here, just pure emotion.
It is simply beautiful music for life. This CD should be heard by everyone who believes that deep down, life is a wonderful thing.
