Legend in My Time: Hank Wilson Vol. III

Legend in My Time: Hank Wilson Vol. III

Editorial Reviews

Claude Russell Bridges, is Leon Russell's real name, and in typically eccentric fashion, the white-bearded wonder uses Wilson as his alias when he sits down to record some beloved country standards in his own inimitable hoodoo way. Legend, subtitled Hank Wilson Vol. III, is a curious, quite satisfying walk through Nashville classics ranging from "Crazy" and "Sweet Dreams" to "Night Life" and "Love's Gonna Live Here." It replaces the bluegrass lilt of the earlier Hank Wilson's Back with a raucous piano-driven edge that makes "Sixteen Tons" and "Daddy Sang Bass" really swing. Guests include Willie Nelson, Marty Stuart, and The Oak Ridge Boys. --Michael Ruby

No Depression
Legend, like its predecessors, is a brace of familiar classics, and even casual fans of classic country will know many of these titles--"Crazy," "Night Life," and so on. They all sound a little different in Russell's hands, though, marked by both his distinctive piano playing and his shaggy voice (admittedly still an acquired taste).... Audio liner notes, really just a chat with Russell and Bradley, provide a curious bonus.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Finest kind.......2006-08-17

What can I say, it's Leon Russell. If you love the previous two Hank Wilson albums you're gonna love this one, too. Personally I can't get enough Leon Russell music. I am biased because to me this is soul music. Some of these selections are a bit more contemporary than the previous albums and that's OK although I prefer the standards.

2 out of 5 stars WILSON NOT FOR THE ROCK AND ROLL RUSSELL FAN.......2000-03-23

As a huge fan of the Rock n' Roll Master of Space and Time, it is mystifying why he feels the need to periodically indulge his Country Bluegrass "roots." Russell's own self-styled version is so startling more original! And as a premiere songwriter of the rarest caliber that hasn't been exactly prolific with his talents of late, albums full of cover tunes just seem like a lazy way to go. Forget the rave reviews from the Hillbillies above; 'Cajun Love Song' from "Carney" runs circles around everything here.

That being said, "Legend In His Own Time" is certainly listenable as far as this sort of stuff goes, with expert musicianship, and an overall improvement over the original effort in '73. Also interesting in the presentation of a different personae - just be aware before buying that he means it! Leon Russell and 'Hank Wilson' are miles apart!

If you want a far more substantial taste of what Leon has been up to in the nineties, check out the superbly soulful "Anything Can Happen" from '92 - one of his best albums ever, no matter what you read elsewhere - or the rocking "Face in the Crowd" from '99.

4 out of 5 stars U Gotta Get This CD!.......1999-01-24

If you were alive any time during the past 30 years, then you gotta get this CD. This is the best thing Leon has done since The Shelter People, with the possible exception of Hank Wilson's Back Vol. 1. Leon isn't simply using these tunes to knock on your heart and ask to get in; Leon IS these songs, and they are already in your heart asking to get out. If you can play this CD and not sing along and not find yourself mumbling the songs under your breath the next day, then all I can say is, "Wake UP!" I'm a long time fan of the Stones, Led Zep, Beatles, Neil Young, Joe Cocker, and Leon, as well as George Jones, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, et. al. Imagine Mick Jagger singing a Jones tune, Imaging Robert Plant crooning out Patsy Cline, hear The Beatles play bluegrass. You never have. 'Probably never will. But hearing Leon Russell sing country more than makes up for it. But this CD. Drink beer. Sing along. Cry along. Tell your buddies. Buy this CD.
