It was easy to see where Kasabian was coming from on its self-titled 2004 debut: Take Oasis' classic rock bluster, slap it together with the Chemical Brothers' acid-soaked club beats, and shake fiercely. But how to improve on a formula the British band already perfected with early singles like "Club Foot" and "Reason Is Treason"? That's easy: more of the same, only louder. On Empire, the shaggy-haired quartet adds dizzying strings and a heavy glam-rock stomp to its new songs, delivering roof-quaking tracks like "Shoot The Runner," "Sun Rise Light Flies" and the monstrous title cut. Look no further for the awesome music playing during the closing surf montage in the HBO/John from Cincinnati's premiere episode. It's Kasabian's "Sun Rise Light Flies". Haven't heard the rest of the album but this song rocks!

Good enough.......2007-06-09

I loved Kasabian's CD, Kasabian (so very much). This was not as great. Still a good sound, but I found a couple songs annoying. Kasabian has just not topped their Kasabian CD. On this disc there's only a couple songs I listen to. Would've been better to just download those particular songs.

A Definite Disappointment.......2007-05-16

I was very eager to hear this new album when it came out. However, upon purchasing it and listening to it a few times, I was then eager to forget it and filed it away. However, I recently dug it back out to give it another try. Unfortunately, I got the same feeling as I did as when I first listened to it. Maybe I was expecting too much since Kasabian's debut was so good, but after several listens, Empire just doesn't do it for me. This album sounds like a compilation of album fillers. Nothing really interesting or fresh about any of the tracks here. This album just doesn't have the same "edge" as the the first album. There are a couple of tracks the save this album from being a complete disaster. These are "Sunrise", "Aponea", and "Me Plus One". Besides that, there's no other tracks worthy of being listened to more than a handful of times. For those of you having not listened to Kasabian's debut, you might tend to like this album, having nothing to compare it too. But to be honest, I don't think I would like Empire even if I'd never heard of Kasabian to begin with. The fact is, they can do better than this, and I will be expecting something much better in the future.

To counter the brit-pop loving retards.......2007-05-07

A review from someone not "poisoned" by having heard their first album. No expectations, no preconceived notions. I found it at a listening station in a record store.

Fantastic. If you don't like the stand-out tracks of Doberman, a non-linear opus that takes you for a ride, the wonderfully rocking Stuntman, or attention grabbing Empire, then there is no hope for you.

Regardless of what they've done in the past, this album by itself, IS GREAT. If they (perhaps) made a better album previously, that doesn't lessen the value of this one at all.

Learn to appreciate good music, this would be a good start.

There's nothing particularly original about Kasabian. The hirsute Leicester band swaggers like the Stone Roses, plays dance-rock like Primal Scream, and mouths off like Oasis. Singer Tom Meighan even once famously derided Strokes singer Julian Casablancas in an interview with the NME as a "posh f---ing skier." But these are also the things that make Kasabian's debut so endearing. It's an album that spills over with personality and confidence, delivering massive club anthems in the form of songs like "Processed Beats," "Cutt Off" and "L.S.F. (Lost Souls Forever)," where the band finds just the right balance between primitive riffs and space-age grooves. -- Aidin Vaziri

I'm surprised. I'd read something where Noel Gallagher from Oasis was saying good things about Kasabian, so I listened to a few songs on itunes, read reviews, and bought this. I like it too. the music is pretty clever and catchy all at the same time, which seems so rare nowadays. Some songs take a minute to get going, but never seem to dissapoint. I'd hit it...

I don't understand how this band gets away with putting up the worst Primal Scream ripoff this side of screamadelica.

The worst part is that this has been done like 10 years before with more power, more bite, more everything!

These guys didn't even take a single risk. Everything is so predictable and radio friendly that you will feel sick by the third or the fourth song.


Do yourself a favour and try to find something that really rocks, not this manufactured S&%

Beg, steal or borrow.......2006-07-31

Beg, steal or borrow this EP, it is rather incredible! This track really reinvigorated the electronic soul inside me, which has been lost since the release of their first album. Their debut album was marvelous and this really doesn't dissapoint. It certainly bodes well for the dreaded second album syndrome which they soon will be facing.

The track pulsates with rhythm and power. The track bulges with electronic buzz right from the off and only slows for a moment towards the end of the song which if anything only builds up suspense for the final heart pounding 40 seconds. The wildly catchy chorus will echo for days after. The epic flourishes from the violins and exclamations from Tom "stop...we're all wasting away" really contrast the beating, pounding verses and give this song a thouroughly distinctive touch. There is a tremendous depth to the music behind the lyrics which really becomes apparent on further listenings.

This band is a truelly classy act and undoubtedly the most exciting thing happening in the UK music scene at this moment. The shock above all that this song gives is that there is certainly room within this band for them to, god forbid, supass their debut album... Now that truelly would be a feat!

nice track but not spectacular either.......2006-07-28

I just read on the band's official website that the lead guitarist/keyboardist quit the band after recording the 2nd CD. That doesn't bode well for this CD. Hope its good but more likely the band couldn't get along and it will show in the quality of the tracks....

Kasabian - Kasabian album review.......2006-02-27

I know this has been out for a while, but I liked the music so I bought it........until you get it home !!!

When you put it in your CD drive, a message appears saying you have upgraded software, and you are requested to restart your PC. Ooops. The people in power BMG records have added protection software which restarts your computer and stops you from putting it on your PC, hence MP3 copying is really hard work, you have to fiddle with your media player settings etc till you get it saved on your PC !!

It does play using the software BMG provide but that stops you from doing your own thing with the CD.

I only bought the damn thing cos it would sound good on my mp3 player when training. Talk about tight.

Anyway, I liked the album, not the best I've heard but certainly worth a listen,

Verdict- buy it but dont agree to the software when you load it or you'll have problems- if they hadnt done that I'd have given it 4 stars.

Reason is Treason..........2005-06-17

Well, it's about time Manchester got a revival -- it's been around fifteen years since bands like the Happy Mondays and Stone Roses erupted onto the music scene. Now with late-70s and mid-80s music being revived in newer, trendier bands, it's about time we got to England in the late-80s and mid-90s.

Enter Kasabian, a Leicester band who put out catchy, synthy, and extremely entertaining rock'n'roll. What does their self-titled album sound like? Well, it has some echoes of those Manchester greats, except that it has a synth edge over those heavy riffs. Add in some very radio-friendly melodies, which are almost guaranteed to get these guys noticed by the media.

Not that that's a bad thing -- they resemble fellow electro-Manchester band South, which happens to be among my favorite Britpop bands. Kasabian is just lighter. They kick things off on a strong note with the expansive "Clubb Foot," which pairs gritty rock with sweeping synth, over Tom Meighan's languid vocals.

Fortunately this is not one of those albums that has one good single, and then gets lazy. Things stay catchy and gritty, all throughout the album, with heavy riffs and steady rhythms, and Kasabian keep their style varied enough that listeners won't be left thinking, "Oh man, are they playing that riff AGAIN?"

Not to mention the singing: Meighan has a very strong, melodious voice. In almost every song, he sings slow and lazily. He sounds either stoned or inattentive, except for a few wonderful songs where he sounds completely into what he sings. "John was a scientist, he was hooked on LSD/Interested in mind control and how the monkey held the key/Said that all life is experiments somebody's planning for the heir/It's for the unexpected citizens who hallucinate in fear," he purrs happily.

Yeah, it can get pretty heavy. but the music is also tempered with an ethereal edge -- there's a brief interlude which is all muffled riffs, deep synth and angelic vocals. At the very least, all that synth serves to lighten up what could have been a dark album, and adds an epic edge to what could have been terribly ordinary music.

The flaw? It gets a bit fragmented, with two peppy electronic "interludes" sitting between harder rock'n'roll. They're pretty, but they feel out of place.

Things climax with hints of another possible direction for them to go in: "U Boat," a rich soundscape that fades away into silence... before fading back into a different mix of "Reason is Treason." It's all hard angles and explosions, and if anything, this mix is even better than the radio-friendly original. (Talk about having your cake and eating it too)

One of the few albums that is catchy and musically rich, Kasabian's debut is one of the best releases this year. It's reminiscent of Britpop greats, but somehow that doesn't matter -- they're original enough to have their own fun sound.

Requires repeat listening........2006-09-21

So far I've listened twice through. While they do not sound as fresh as on the first CD, they still manage to be at least interesting on most of the cuts. I'd like to hear it a few more times yet, but an example is that the first time I listened to the 'Empire' track, I did not like it. After repeated listening it grew on me, and not like cancer. It's for sure not 'Clubfoot', but as John Mayall once said, "What did you come here for, to hear on old record?" Tracks 2, 3, 5 and 8 are all pretty enjoyable. The final track is a bit pretentious and over the top, but if that was what they were going for, they got it.

Their sophmore CD is pretty disappointing.......2006-09-06

Kasabian dumped their lead guitarist while recording this CD and the remaining band went for a very different sound from their popular first CD. What we get this time around is more a collection of pop songs with the vocals often pushed up front. The dance/club/rave style of the first CD is not really represented here except maybe by the "sun/rise" track. Its a big change for the band and I dont think they carry it off very well. With the lyrics pushed up front in virtually every track, we are forced to listen to lyrics that aren't attention-grabbing. Just a fair warning that this CD sounds nothing at all like their previous CD....

Rule The Empire.......2006-09-04

Kasabian's new release is determined to be one the most celebrated cds of 2006. It's as narcicistic and pompous as its tittle indicates and truly succeeds on experimenting with new soundscapes creating a coherent cd, eventhough not all of the eleven tracks share the same creativity.

EMPIRE sets the tone for the whole album. Its marching military beat, the hypnotic violins during the chorus and the changing electronic bases make this song one of those that has to be heard to be understood. A really risky single, definitely not mainstream. A piece of musical art.

SHOOT THE RUNNER is a frentic melody, based on a set of clapping hands. Heard to be the 2nd single. It has the same musical aura of their first cd but sounds crispy new.

LAST TRIP is another fast paced song. Has a kind of retro feel, mostly due to its heavily-charged vocal background.

ME PLUS ONE keeps on incorporating an eastern flavour on the band's new sound. Begins semi-acousticly and keeps on with the rythm until a tricky violin melody is added at the end. Simply gorgeous.

SUN/RISE/LIGHT/FLIES serves as another example of what I've mentioned on the previous track. Is truly anthemic, makes you feel like travelling through space and time. Song like this has gained them comparison to the Stone Roses. Marvelous.

APNOEA it's a techno danceable interlude. Addictive but short.

BY MY SIDE sticks to your head instantly. Danceable donwtempo song, greately mixed and produced. Could crowd at the same time a chill out bar and a trendy disco.

STUNTMAN is another heavily electronic song. Mind blowing, fast, agressive, feels like a gunshot.

SEEK AND DESTROY relies on a looped videogame-like beat. Trippy.

BRITISH LEGION turns the album upside down before the grand finale as it's mainly acoustic. Sounds like a late Beatles era song.

THE DOBERMAN finishes the album as an apocalyptic anthem. Listen to the whole of it and explore the changes of rythm, the dums, the trumpets, the voices...

The curse about the sophomore release is over for Kasabian. They've reached to the musical maturity that some of us were anticipating since their self-titled album. Can't wait to see where they'll next be headed to.
Until then, there's plenty to enjoy here...
