Fans looking for the newest chapter in Attrition's hybrid of neoclassical goth and muscular, clean industrial dance may be somewhat frustrated by The Jeopardy Maze, the band's 1999 offering and its 11th full-length overall. For one thing, the industrial dance has been softened into a lighter, electronica feel. Julia Waller's operatic glossolalia, formerly the acute accent on Martin Bowes's gruff vocals, feels anchorless. Franck Dematteis's stirring viola, used to mournful yet melodic effect on discs like 3 Arms and a Dead Cert and Étude, is here often atonal. Touches of the old sound peek out (particularly on the sleek "Waste Not, Want...More" and the smoldering "The Illuminator," the disc's highlight), but Bowes is clearly more interested in experimentation here, stretching out the textural landscape of his trademark sound (much the way he did on This Death House and Ephemera). Ambient string-and-keyboard compositions spiked with spoken-word samples take up quite a bit of space, resulting in a creepy, soundtrackish work with fewer "songs" than we're used to. Ultimately perhaps not the most memorable of Attrition discs, but an interesting listen nonetheless. --Steve Landau

5 out of 5 stars The culmination of everything the band has built up before!........1999-04-16

ATTRITION The Jeopardy Maze (Projekt) It has been fifteen years since the release of Attrition's first album. Instead of sounding like a tired band at the end of their career, The Jeopardy Maze is the culmination of everything the band has built up before, sparked with a fresh vitality and a sense of calm confidence. If anything, I would go so far as to say this is probably the strongest release we have seen yet from this British outfit. Martin Bowes is the main force behind Attrition, as he writes everything, programs it, mixes it and sings on it. Aiding him is Julia Waller, who adds her beautiful voice to most of the tracks, and Frack Dematteis, who does an equally superb job blending his viola into the mix. The interplay between Martin's deep, ashen vocals and Julia's operatic approach is the main appeal of Attrition, as they work together to drive home memorable tracks like "Waste Not, Want..." and "The Illuminator."

Musically, The Jeopardy Maze is all over the place. From dark ambient instrumentals, filled with menace and beauty, to more up-tempo (but still eerie) dance songs, Attrition handle all the styles with precision and sequences them in a logical and eminently listenable fashion. The diverse elements are even brought together in one song, "I Am a Thief," with equal aplomb. The band somehow manages to incorporate elements from gothic, industrial, ambient, and techno music without coming close to being pigeonholed in any particular style.

This isn't the kind of album you're going to properly enjoy cruising down I-90 or cleaning out your refrigerator. You need to be able to sit down in a darkened room and really listen to it, feel it. If you haven't heard Attrition yet, but are a fan of bands like Die Form or some of the Projekt bands, The Jeopardy Maze is a definite must. [Daniel Hinds]

5 out of 5 stars Great Debut From A Great Forgotten Band.......2006-10-23

This debut album from 1980 should have been our first exposure to one of the most brilliant bands of their time. But things didn't go that way for Adrian Borland and The Sound--the album received little airplay and was forgotten. It's a tragedy. At least now we can rediscover this music with the wonderful CD re-release from Renascent. Of all The Sound albums, this has the rawest quality, sounding almost like a live band instead of one recorded in a studio (in fact, there are 4 bonus tracks that were recorded live). Standout songs include I Can't Escape Myself, Heartland, Unwritten Law, Heyday, Missiles...well, I might as well list the whole album. This CD is essential to any collection of alternative rock. But then again, so are all the CDs from The Sound!

5 out of 5 stars post-punk need i say more.......2005-05-19

ok, so let me start by saying that the sound is by far one of the best "lost" bands in time. you wanna know what they sound like? if joy division and echo and the bunnymen had a hot night in manchester this is what their kid's band would sound like. a must have, check out there 2nd lp "from the lions mouth" a must have as well.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sounding Live Album.......2005-02-11

This is the best live album from Greg Kihn. It sounds great and has a good song selection--even the raps between songs by Greg are interesting. The only problem with it is there are no notes about the recording, the dates, the musicians, or the places it was recorded. However, Greg does introduce the band and guess what? the guitar player was Joe Satriani, --no wonder the lead guitar playing was great. I still would like to know when this set was recorded--does anybody know what yr Satriani was in Greg Kihn's band--I am guessing around 1990-1992. Get this CD--it sounds great and of course Greg's singing is great along with his rhythm guitar style.

Album Description

With only one voice and one Yamaha keyboard, Erin McGrew has fashioned the first CD of her original songs, running the spectrum of styles from comedy, pop, and dance music to blues and classical. The garnet is the birthstone of January, and GARNET has themes of winter, nostalgia, and personal beginnings running through its songs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Album.......2006-04-12

Erin McGrew's first album is an original and highly creative set of songs displaying a broad emotional range. Garnet accomplishes what few albums do in that it has no weak moments. Erin clearly put her heart into every track, never stooping to the level of writing boring, pointless filler.
Probably the best aspect is the contrasting moods of the songs. It's a rare thing to get an album that delivers such an emotional roller coaster ride, and Garnet pulls it off flawlessly.
Hats off to Erin McGrew.
This takes talent.

5 out of 5 stars Loved the Album, but Loved You More.......2006-03-04

I think she's hot in a Maid Marion sort of way. And that's not meant in a mean way. I mean, come on. She's wearing that little red riding hood. What other character am I going to compare her to? Too bad she's married. Loved the music though. Erin, you're awesome...but you're no Daniel White. Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars An elegant modern pop troubadoress.......2004-10-29

This elegant, English like, pop musical collection of original songs, written and sung by Erin McGrew, is a delightful synthesis of poetry, storytelling, and enchanting melody. Think of a mix of Andrew Lloyd Weber showtunes, Irish ballads, and pop rock. And one very cute song depicting a teenage girl trying to get the courage to ask intended male hearthrob out on a date.

Erin has performed as a keyboard performer with musical productions in Dallas for years, and her knowledge of that genre shows in her music. She knows how to write a Broadway-worthy song. She also knows how to sing and play and arrange and do it all with personality and charm. I've listened to her CD over and over and it always improves with each listening. That's quality.

My personal favorite on her CD is the dreamy siren song "Optimystic" which is the ending song on the recording. Sort of like a fluffy creme brule after a delightful meal. But without the calories.

If you like the kind of songs that Sarah Brightman sings on her CD's, DVD's, and live tours, then you will enjoy the mix that Erin McGrew offers you on her CD of original music, "Garnet".

5 out of 5 stars Voice from Heaven.......2003-07-25

As a music producer, I have occasion to hear many singer/songwriters practicing their art. Erin McGrew demonstrates a rare talent and sincerity. In the vein of Prince and Don Henley, this artist performs all the instruments herself, writes, and sings. Her range of styles is impressive.

An album well worth owning.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is a real JEWEL.......2003-07-18

Erin McGrew is an extremely talented songwriter and this album shows just how diverse she is.
Just listen to "Melinda", one of my personal favourites, and you'll be amazed at how original and bloody clever this is. This "song" alone could easily be a cult hit.
But the rest of the facets of this jewel are equally meritorious, so definitely put this on your cd "must-have" list.

    4 out of 5 stars Quick-Change Gems for Art-Rock Lovers.......2001-03-07

Filled with short, powerful little ditties, this is the perfect album to sit along side your Naked City, God is My Co-Pilot and Mr. Bungle releases. Suitably, Dim Sum Clip Job is a band composed of well-known Downtown rockers Laura Cromwell, Chris Cochrane and Kenny Wolleson--and is produced by avant-auteur, John Zorn himself. Shrouded in a punk aesthetic, this album nonetheless manages to overcome the "power-chord" simplicity of the genre and opts instead for a conceptual approach to rock. Quoting freely from the tropes of surf, thrash, Japanese-noise and prog, this album raises the bar of art-rock to ecstatic levels. The highlight of the album, as well as the most challenging track, is a four-minute sound-collage of breaking glass that conjures up images of a football-riot looting spree. Take out your agression with a few listens of this.
