5 out of 5 stars Better than the rest........2007-05-26

Stitch would be SO pissed to hear Grade 8 and rap-metal in the same sentence. Fact of the matter is, until you've seen a Grade 8 show, you have no idea of what this band is all about. These guys are on the up-and-up.

1 out of 5 stars Sucks.......2007-04-15

Mudvayne is way better then this band ever will be. I dont even know why I bought this cd but it really sucked.

1 out of 5 stars Nice Try With The Threat To Opeth and Mudvayne.......2006-10-14

"Hardcore rockers Grade 8 are ready to give Mudvayne, Saliva & Opeth a run for their money."

That's what's under the "product description" above. It's right under the song samples.

First off, you can't scare off Mudvayne. True, you may consider Mudvayne nu metal, but not ordinary nu-metal, especially on "L.D. 50", as it blends in elements of prog and technical music as well. Comparing this cookie-cutter disc to a fine CD is blasphemy.

However, it is not as blasphemous as it is to Opeth! I mean, come on, can you actually compare a band who writes epic memorable songs to some lame nu-metal band that only released two forgettable albums?

Seriously, this CD is no good. Nothing special, memorable, and it's boring. If you want a good nu-metal CD, check into Deftones, 40 Below Summer, Ill Nino, OLD Mudvayne or Sevendust. And for the love of Sweet Mary, don't think that they'll pass up Opeth.

2 out of 5 stars WTF?!?!.......2006-06-12

Okay, I don't even have this, but I've heard the samples and it pretty much sounds just like another proof why nu-metal sucks. But look at the editorial review for a sec.....

"Hardcore rockers Grade 8 are ready to give Mudvayne, Saliva & Opeth a run for their money."

I'm sorry, but how can you compare mallcore cr a ppy bands like Mudvayne and Saliva to the almighty Opeth (an original metal band that you've never heard on MTV or the radio and that never sold out)? And to give Opeth a run for their money?!! You crazy ************! The song 'Black Rose Immortal' alone blows away Mudvayne's whole discography, as well as with Saliva's (and quite possibly also with G8). It's not even funny.

Want something good? Get Opeth's 'Morning Rise' or 'Deliverance'. They will kil any nu-metal album you can think of.

1 out of 5 stars Grade Zero.......2005-11-20

This cd is pathetic. The music is really boring and the singers voice is terrible. Unfortunately I saw this band live recently and they sounded even worse than the cd. Don't waste your time or money.

3 out of 5 stars The Story Behind the Record.......2007-04-02

So here's the deal: Several months after parting ways with American Head Charge (fall 2003) I got a call from a friend in the industry who knew I was looking for a new gig. He told me there was a band that had a deal with Lava/Atlantic and did Ozzfest and some other descent tours but their old manager was a chump and their rhythm section deserted them. They were looking for a new bassist and drummer and wanted to get an electronics/keyboard guy. The new manager was putting the band up in Vegas and keeping them fed while they worked on new material to demo for Lava. I got the first record and heard potential so I flew out to Vegas. Everyone seemed really cool and our jam sessions went well so I decided to stay. We recorded a bunch of songs for Lava but the label was in turmoil and our A&R guy left the company. Not suprisingly, we were dropped along with many many other acts. We stayed in Vegas trying to figure out the next move.

Several months later our bassist Stitch hooked us up with some radio festival gigs in CA through his old bandmate Ivan from Motograter. The next thing I know we're in the studio trying to turn the demo recordings into a record in the space of a week. Our manager had hooked up a great deal with a major box chain to put the record into stores in any region where we were active via radio or touring. He wanted to get things kicked off in CA right away, so we struggled to at least get some guitar and vocal overdubs tracked, and give it a more focused mixing, in the short amount of time available. I had no chance to fix or add anything (all my parts had been tracked out of my Mac's headphone jack, they were demos).

and btw all the electronics were done by myself (though there are some guitar parts you might think are electronics or vice versa).Toby Wright just did alternate mixes for a couple of the tracks not "remixed" in the NIN, Prodigy sense of the word. Though he did turn my parts up and killed the guitars in the verses of "Fighting Me" >;o>

1 out of 5 stars Worse Than Their First.......2005-11-20

How did this band ever get funding for another album???
I actually picked this cd up in the $1.00 bin at a pawn shop the other day thinking it might be ok. Well... It's a musical disaster. This album is even worse than their first release. The music is boring, the guitar riffs are pathetic, and the singers voice is like finger nails on a chalk board. Sometimes it sounds like he actually has marbles in his mouth.
There are so many other good bands out right now, don't waste your money on this one.

2 out of 5 stars Blows.......2005-04-11

I loved Grade 8's first album. When i heard a new one was coming out i was really happy and wanted to get it right away. But wait a minute, big mistake on my part! First off the intro is completely pointless. It doesn't even lead into Resurrection or have any significance whatsoever. When the Resurrection track came on, i thought that track was ok. From then on the album totally sucked. The only somewhat ok songs are Demons and I Don't Need. Buy Grade 8's first self-titled album and don't waste your hard earned money on this Grade A genuine piece o' crap!
I still wonder, whatever happened to the AWESOME stuff on their first album. None of it showed through on this one.

4 out of 5 stars Resurrection.......2005-01-04

Even though Grade 8 is somewhat heavier than the average nu-metal band, it's pretty obvious that those who dislike the genre will find nothing to please them in Grade 8's albums. That having been said, those who are fans of the genre and Grade 8 in particular will more than likely enjoy this follow-up to the band's hard-hitting 2003 debut. Resurrection has far more of an electronic edge to it than their original self-titled album, but Grade 8 still manages to rock hard, especially on the title track, Oxyrotten, Ignore, Waiting, and (easily the best track on the album) Serving Serpents. This is possibly due to the input of Toby Wright (Alice In Chains), who helped remix some of the tracks for the album's widespread release. However, the band itself must take the majority of the credit. The lyrical content is better on this album than the last one, and the band as a whole shows new life and growth, perhaps as a result of the fact that half of the current members are new to the fold. The only mark I have against the album is the somewhat noticeable lack of production, which is no doubt due to the band no longer having major label backing for their recordings. Even then, props must be given to Grade 8 for continuing to put out great new material despite their lack of support.

1 out of 5 stars Major Dissappointment.......2004-12-22

I instantly became a huge fan of Grade 8 when I heard their first album. It was one of those albums that you could just throw in your cd player and let it run through without having to skip a track.

When I saw that they had a new album coming out, I jumped for joy. But that was before I actually heard the album. Not only is it bad for Grade 8, it might be one the worst ive ever heard. It makes me sad that such a great band can put such garbage.

Here are my gripes.

1) The guitar riffs are no where near as awesome and mind-blowing as the first. They use a lot of DJ and just random sounds to fill out the songs, some of which are cool, but most of which suck and are just plain strange.

2) Ryan TRIES to sing.....oh man I thought he was dieing, cuz it sure sounds like he is. Theres almost none of his signature growling like on the last album. Terrible.

3) The lead singer tries to sing.....wait, did I already mention that?

I can honestly say that there are NO decent songs on this album. Please find somewhere on the internet (ie fye.com or some place like it) and listen to the tracks before you buy.

    5 out of 5 stars Contains a wonderful performance of Bruckner's eighth.......2004-11-30

Well, I am not rich enough to own the whole set, so I will just refer to Bruckner's eighth symphony. Bruckner's seventh and ninth symphonies regularly featured in Mravinsky's concerts but the eight did less freaquently. However, what is on offer here is truly the one for the ages. Mravinsky leads a performance that is at once intense and lyrical and brings out the visceral power and sublime beauty in this magnificiant score. He clocks in just over 73 minutes, knocking some thirty minuets (!)off Celibidache's monstrous Munich account (EMI), despite his use of the Hass edition. How he pulls that off is anyone's guess because hearing it through one does not feel that it is all that fast. The intensely beautiful Adagio is particularly memorable. Recorded in mono in 1959, the sonics are a bit harsh at times but generally clear and perfectly acceptable.

    4 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Weekend's Listening.......2001-02-05

About a year ago, I bought the first 10 CD set of Mravinsky's masterworks, and was struck by two things - the ferocity with which he was able to get his musicians to play, and the lack of preparation that I felt should have been paid when selecting the choicest bits for this sort of ambitious undertaking. However, the recordings we are offered were, technically speaking, not the best (in spite of the advances of digital recording technology in the past 20 years, a time span these mixes had been recorded in).

Enough about the first ten - the second edition (vols. 11 through 20) are truly an exception. I couldn't pass up the price that these were being offered at, and have only had the opportunity to give them a cursory listen. Nonetheless, the audio quality on this edition is leaps and bounds beyond its father. Mind you, you'll still be unsettled by fits of coughing and the occasional sniffle here and there, but the distortions and fuzz in the background are gone. Blissfully, too, because you don't want anything to distract you from an exceptional set of recordings.

Most of what you'll hear are the familiar phrases that we've come to know all too well (Beethoven's 5th, for example). This in itself is a bold move; we are being offered the chance to stack it against some of the best recordings thereof, albeit (perhaps) from memory. However, both Ludwig's 5th and 7th hold their own against the best you can find on Deutsche Grammaphone.

The unfamilar is also offered; Rimsky-Korsakov's precarious "Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevroniya" is a delightfully dark (at times) splash of music best enjoyed with a glass of port in a comfortable chair. Ovsianiko-Kulikovskii's 21st symphony (no, I don't know if I've ever heard symphonies 1-20 before it, either) is also particularly enjoyable.

Brahms and Bruckner round out the selection, but Mravinsky and the Leningrad Philharmonic are at their absolute best when they approach the Tchaikovsky sets. "Pathetique" and "Leningrad" are, while not his most famous, among my favorites, and they are sympathetically conducted and remarkably played.

Purchasing this set will allow you many, many hours of tremendous satisfaction. Don't look back at the first set; look forward to the hopes that Melodiya will put out more, with the quality of both selections and recordings becoming better and better.

1 out of 5 stars Small emotional range, muddy ornamentation, etc........2004-02-06

At least on this CD sampler of Baumont's complete Couperin works for harpsichord, his playing can be characterized at various junctures as plucky, cute, metronomic, un-philosophical, un-poetic, and un-magical. Even on the one piece where he employs a generous rubato, it's an insufficient gift of expressiveness to the listener.

If you've heard and relished versions of some or all of these pieces played by the likes of Gustave Leonhardt, Kenneth Gilbert or Edward Parmentier, you'll realize the genius that is hidden away from us by performers with a limited emotional palette such as seems to be possessed by Mr. Baumont. Subtle rhythmic alterations (the prime means of expression on the harpsichord as per writings from the period), when at all rendered by Mr. Baumont are relatively colorless.

Even his occasional bravado is a bit hollow. He doesn't reach into the lush fountainhead of 18th century musical grandeur - we are left with what's merely prosaic. There's no play between various layers of psychological depth in his interpretation of "Les Folies Francois". Even though he may glimpse something more profound, he does not bring an adequate range of feeling to bear.

Baumont's grasp of impressionistic themes (possibly more bountiful in Couperin than in any other composer up until his time) seems to have no real dimension to it. This does a disservice to Mr. Couperin, and to Mr. Baumont'a listeners.
