One tends to associate ambient music with serenity, but of course ambient sound is merely atmospheric noise. It can be a songbird singing or a glass shattering. Fantomas is ambiance at its most annoying--which, of course, is the mission of this cacophonous California supergroup. Spearheaded by former Mr. Bungle and Faith No More member Mike Patton and fleshed out with bassist Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle), guitarist Buzz Osbourne (Melvins), and drummer Dave Lombardo (Slayer), Fantomas impudently mix crunching hardcore riffs with serpentine fake-jazz lines, silent-film and cartoon-soundtrack asides, and alarming sound effects. Patton treats his vocal cords as a fourth instrument; he doesn't really sing, and what he intones aren't actual words. Rather, he sputters gibberish. With Patton's affection for the work of Warner Bros. cartoon composer Raymond Scott in mind, imagine the Tasmanian Devil as a scat singer. For Fantomas, it all adds up to ambient music for the unhinged. --Steven Stolder

Film music and the artier end of the rock spectrum have enjoyed a slightly bent connection since the early '80s, when the noir-savvy California new wavers of Wall of Voodoo made clear Ennio Morricone's influence on their work. Fantomas's second album, The Director's Cut, is in that somewhat playful spirit. The all-star ensemble--ex-Faith No More frontman Mike Patton with members of Slayer, the Melvins, and Patton's Mr. Bungle--adapts disturbing (or at least spooky) themes by Bernard Herrmann, Henry Mancini, Morricone, and others. The bruising but often campy (there is no track 13) result works more often than you'd expect; Nino Rota's Godfather and Harry Lubin's (TV) One Step Beyond excerpts are put through more than effective paces. It's clear that, despite the occasional (inadvertent?) Iron Maiden homage, Patton and friends have no interest in keeping a straight face on this. That's fine, but Patton's goofy lyrical interjections on several of these tunes turns them into not-very-funny cartoons. Still, it's the rare sympathetic listener who won't be driven to check out obscure flicks like Der Golem and The Devil Rides Out. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars Mike Patton's Fantomas Project........2007-05-13

I am a huge fan of Mike Patton's work and this band 'Fantomas' is no exception. Whatever Mike Patton does is really worth a listen. This album is Mike Pattons and Fantomas's take on popular television scores like 'Cape Fear' 'Twin Peaks'. His skill in arrangement and vocal melodies are amazing, and reflects in all of Fantomas's albums. Currently this album is my favourite of the Fantomas discography.

5 out of 5 stars The quintessential Fantomas album.......2006-07-18

Director's Cut: The version of a film in which the editing process is overseen, executed, or approved by the director, usually including footage not included in the standard release.

This is the case with Fantomas' The Director's Cut, a compilation album of sixteen movie themes which Mike Patton and the amazing band behind him re-interpret in their dementedly creative musical vision. With drum god Dave Lombardo behind the skins, and two other friends of Patton's: guitarist Buzz Osbourne from the Melvins and bassist Trevor Dunn from Mr Bungle, the quartet offer their take on some of the most interesting movies we've seen. Since none of these pieces were originally composed by Mike Patton, you have to bear in mind that some of the songs still carry with them the fingerprints of the original composers, which include Ennio Morricone, Henry Mancini, and Nuno Rota. However, the versions on this disc differ vastly from the ones on the original movies, hence the appropriate title The Director's Cut.

Some of the material on this 39-minute disc barely qualifies as "songs" per se, ranging from as little as a few seconds to the maximum of three-plus minutes. Out of the sixteen cuts, the average song length is around 2:00 minutes, alternating between insanely chaotic and brutal to almost childish. "The Godfather" is a prime example of the former description, starting in a creepy manner, picking up a deep bass riff, and delving deep into a fast and heavy sonic explosion. Patton screams, shrieks, growls and grunts. Like a soul possessed by demons, his "singing" is paranoid and unlike anything you've heard from him, given you're only familiar with his work with Faith No More and Mr Bungle. In the blink of an eye, a muted riff arises beneath Patton's vocals to complement Lombardo's sickeningly fast double bass drums and leaves the listener completely baffled. Again, without being able to grasp what's going on, the music quietens down and retreats to the original "The Godfather" theme, as if nothing has happened. And this is only the beginning.

"Der Golem" is pure death metal battery, portraying Mike Patton as one of the most prolific vocalists ever. Dave Lombardo gets to show his jazz inspirations with ever-ringing crash cymbals and head-spinning drum rolls. Effect-laden soundscapes push the aggressive piece into a much unexpected realm, featuring Patton's beast-like grunts and tortured screams in a mini-second. As if that's not enough, Lombardo, Osbourne and Dunn quickly team up to create a Meshuggah-like ending, so precise yet so heavy.

It's not all extreme vocals though. On the contrary, "Experiment in Terror" and "Spider Baby" are just two of the songs that put Patton's more humourous side to the fore. Epic and calm, the former has him singing (happily) almost like a woman; whereas the latter is centred entirely around Dunn's majestic bass and comprised of predominantly spoken vocals (some of which are hummed) and eerie keyboards. Patton also displays more of his versatility on "Charade", complete with church organs, African rhythms (Lombardo playing hand drums?), and more woman-like singing. The cinematic quality of "Rosemary's Baby" is most prevalant, considering the crying babies, odd backing harmonies that contrast Patton's child-like and then deeply ominous vocals respectively. On top of that, there are marching guitar riffs filling the song along with bells and even acoustic guitars.

The other songs feature very few vocals, if any at all. "One Step Beyond" is another study in death metal minus the growling. Instead, Patton chooses to scream over the piece, while Lombardo comfortably breaks his kick-drum speed record amidst cascading crescendos. "Night of the Hunter" and "Cape Fear", while following each other on the album, are so different it's not even funny anymore. The first one is just organs and sound effects while "Cape Fear" is the album's daring piece, laced with distant vocals, big drums, and a sweet, addictive guitar theme. The remix of "The Devil Rides Out" has Patton basically crooing as the suspense increases each passing second. Likewise, the drone sounds on "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer" is absolutely stunning. It begins in silence. All you can hear is a single drum beat every ten seconds. Then, the bass and guitars introduce themselves, creating utter chaos, yet in a strangely beautiful way. Traces of Patton's Mr Bungle stylings come through on "Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion", which would be the darkest song had it not been for the deliberately thrown humourous elements. The last twenty seconds of this piece are downright paralyzing.

If you've never heard any Fantomas before, despite its extreme and avant leanings, I'd suggest you start with The Director's Cut, as their first album is even more difficult (with no lyrics, just randomly "sung" made-up words) and their last one is a single-track composition of 74 minutes. Still, both albums are must-haves if you're a fan of experimental, avant garde, and extreme music. This is not for the typical Faith No More fan I'm afraid.

4 out of 5 stars So, Patton released a covers album, eh?.......2006-01-30

Well, not quite. The only Fantomas album I've heard that really grabbed me, Director's Cut is a great album for those who want something dark and bizarre yet also catchy and dramatic. A covers album you say? Well, of sorts. Here, a selection of film scores are rearranged for buzzing guitars, pounding bass, thrashing drums and experimental vocals. Its scary, beautiful, epic and plain f'ing weird.

Those of you expecting the off the wall, jazz tinged, avant garde sound of Mr Bungle will be dissappointed (as was I at first, if I'm honest). Fantomas is a much more metallic, stripped down and altogether darker experience. Patton's vocals are all over the place as ever but those of you who think he indulges too much in being odd will be pleased to hear that he's just as capable of singing powerfully as is of expanding the horizons of what really constitutes a vocalist. The songs all have their own identity (due to, essentially, being written by totally different people) but the way the band arrange and play them also ensures a sense of continuity.

As I said before, Director's Cut is the only Fantomas album I've gotten into so far but I highly recommend it for experimental metal fans.

5 out of 5 stars It's Bungle-Quality ladies and gents.......2005-12-02

This album is PHENOMENAL. Where am I coming from when I say this? Well, Mr. Bungle is probably my favorite band ever, and Patton is my favorite performer. However, I've never been excited about any of Fantomas or Tomahawk's releases. In fact, I've found them quite disappointing, and I never listen to my copies of any of them. So I'd kind of given up on Fantomas altogether until I saw the Director's Cut for $6.99 used a few weeks back and figured "what the hell".

I don't know what it is about the music on this CD, but I haven't been this satisfied with a Patton release since I first heard Mr Bungle back in 1997, and then again after California was released some years later.

SO TO SUMMARIZE: I never thought I would be this impressed with the work of Mike Patton again. Every song on this album is unique and incredibly satisfying. Just so you don't think I'm some drooling fanboy who gives rave-reviews to every album, I'll rate a few other Bungle/Fantomas albums as well for you so you can get a gauge on my levels-

Album Description

%@#$!!? Brace yourself, super group Fantomas is back with a vengeance on their fourth album SUSPENDED ANIMATION. Unlike the epic DELIRIUM CORDIA, SUSPENDED ANIMATION likens itself with Fantomas' first record (self titled) punctuated with cartoon escapades.

The first edition (Limited to 25,000) is a spiral bound 30 page eye popping package illustrated by world famous Japanese painter Yoshitomo Nara. The theme is a calendar, the month of April, the tracks appropriately named the days of the week.

2 out of 5 stars 10/21/06: "Suspended Animation Review" day.......2006-10-22

Mike Patton has proven himself to be one of the most prolific and unpredictable musicians in show business in his post Faith No More/Mr. Bungle career. Although I don't even begin to attempt to collect everything he puts out I do like to take a listen to what he's up to now and then.

SUSPENDED ANIMATION is packed with hundreds of ideas, of varying degrees of success. Some "days" have better moments than others, like the spooky intro for "04/11/05 Monday" that sounds like a room full of gurgling ghosts, or "04/27/05 Wednesday" 's sleigh-ride in outer space. Most of the other intriguing moments on this CD involve some manipulation of found sounds or electronic toys.

Patton's former band, Mr. Bungle, was also a band renowned for it's musical spontaneity, but whereas Bungle's songs worked through it's own inner logic and fluidness, making it easier to digest, the disparate elements of SUSPENDED ANIMATION doesn't hang together nearly as well as the best of Bungle work. It's progression is more akin to rapid-fire channel-surfing than an epic motion picture.

Despite the low rating I'm assigning this release, I must admit that I'm not sorry I bought it. I rarely reach for this CD to play, and when I do it's just to seek out a handful of random tracks, just enough to satisfy a need to hear something wild and chaotic. Perhaps the calendar concept of the song titles was meant to be followed literally, to listen to one track each day. Compressing an entire "month" in 43 minutes is too demanding a listening experience.

3 out of 5 stars Baby please.........2006-07-13

The technique of cutting and pasting strange sounds and bizarre segments into songs was used by Frank Zappa already during the 70's. But Fantomas succeds better at making listenable music out of it, and they add their own unique sound to it, much thanks to Mike Pattons vocals.

But I agree that a full disc of it (or at least 40 minutes) becomes a little bit annoying after a while. I found that the songs worked a lot better when I made a compilation tape, mixing the songs with other Patton related work, such as "Director's Cut" and Mr.Bungle.

"Suspended Animation" was the album that got me into Fantomas and Mr.Bungle. I was surprised to find out that Mike Patton once was the singer of Faith No More, a band I really tried to like many years ago, but that I found very boring and uninspiring. He has come a long way.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome mind blowing!.......2006-06-13

I wouldn't expect anything less from Mike Patton and Co. A piece of art crafted from cartoon insanity. Their sound is like a kid making a "Mystery Pie" in the kitchen a mixture of cookie dough, paprika, OJ, Milk and Cap n' Crunch mixed in a pie tin and burned in the oven. Ingredients that don't mix. Some gag on the concotion others see the brillance of developing artist. I see the latter. I was left speechless after a listen to it. I love the damn thing! Not everybody's cup of tea and thats too bad.

5 out of 5 stars CARTOON MADNESS!!.......2006-06-08

1. The entire record is metal and cartoon music/effects thrown together and spit at your bleeding ears.
2. Because of that some tunes are certainly better than others but the album as a whole is rad.
3. Perfet driving music when you're getting irritable with traffic.
4. Also good when whiskey is involved.
- a lot of whiskey.
5. Honestly only good if you are into crazy music.
6. ALthough not my favorite Fantomas (director's cut is still the best) it seriously just kills the first one and delerium cordia..
7. And no it doesn't sound anything like Mr. bungle sorry..

5 out of 5 stars Mike Patton is totally out of his socks.......2006-10-19

My first exposure to Fantomas was the Melvins+Fantomas Big Band a few months ago, and I can honestly say that at first I absolutely HATED Mike Patton's vocals. But after numerous listens I found something appealing to me about them. So I finally decided to give Fantomas a fair shake and see what came of it. I picked up their first album and after one listen was completely hooked. It seems that alot of these songs are on the Big Band album so I had heard some of it before, but it was nothing like listening to the entire album from start to finish. Some people on here hate it and think it is nothing but noise; I can see where they are coming from. It takes and open mind to listen to this kind of stuff but if you can appreciate it then you know where I am coming from. I still can't quite put my finger on what is so appealing about this record to me. Maybe it is because I am a big fan of the Melvins' 'Prick' and 'Colossus of Destiny', both very bizarre recordings in their own right, but who knows. All I know is that I like it alot and am looking forward to other Fantomas releases.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing CD for those Who Enjoy Something...Different........2006-07-02

Fantomas is genius. But, not everyone can enjoy hanging out with a genius, he can just be to hard to understand, to complicated for normal people. Fantomas is a tough sell just because they're not usual, people aren't used to listening to this kind of music. But, if you have an open mind, and want to enjoy something great and unique, definitely check out this CD. But if you don't like to have to REALLY think about what you're listening to, or just don't enjoy alot of loud noises, then please go somewhere else.

2 out of 5 stars Action/Special Effects Soundtrack to a non-existent movie . . ........2006-04-14

. . . and, therefore, virtually useless unless you enjoy sitting around listening to disjointed segments of thrash metal. This "music" is too obsessed with comic books for its own good . . . and really, there's no way to effectively soundtrack a comic book, so the average listener (i.e. - not a Mike Patton obsessive) will find the Fantomas debut to be either a failed experiment or an unlistenable exercise in self-indulgence. I'm not averse to thrash, noise or avante-garde music, I'm just not turned on by this record and don't care to ever hear it again. If you find Patton's screaming and yelping to be "brilliant," I've got some recordings of my 5-yr-old nephew I'd like to sell to you.

Maybe Fantomas should consider signing on to do the soundtrack of an actual movie; they might find their music serving a more useful purpose . . .

5 out of 5 stars Huge innovation on music.......2006-03-16

For the first time Mike Patton shows the true extent of his genius. Fantomas are my favourite band that are around these days and this is where it started. I can easily see why so many people hate it though because its crazy as hell. If you want to try something new get this album and expect nothing. Most people will hate it but those who like it will love it.

4 out of 5 stars Patton's first foray into jump cut........2005-04-18

The Fantomas project is often thought of (mentioned as) a heavy metal supergroup, but this is really a bad way to think of the band. Comprised of Mike Patton (vocals, Faith No More/Mr. Bungle), Trevor Dunn (bass, Mr. Bungle), Buzz Osbourne (guitar, the Melvins), and Dave Lombardo (drums, Slayer), this is closer in concept to John Zorn's Naked City than it is to anything these guys have done before.

While its been commented that being so heavily inspired by Naked City, this is largely an unoriginal record, I think Patton brings something new to the fold. Naked City blended and fused genres using hardcore/death metal as the glue to hold things together-- Patton follows a similar concept, but he's taken it to a more theatrical level-- whereas Zorn's concept was moreso bringing theatrical elements into hardcore, it appears Patton's doing the opposite-- add the hardcore to the theatrical nature of the work.

Top that off with the startling diversity of his vocals (there's no lyrics, but shouts, gibbers, moans, wails, hums, hisses), some of its unnervingly beautiful, some of its just unnerving. Either way, its certainly interesting. The concept is a bit less well developed than the later Fantomas album, and as a whole, the piece doesn't hold together as well, but its still a great record with lots of interesting moments, and if there's any doubt about whether these guys have any idea what they're doing, check out the haunting "Page 18" (the tracks are relatively unnamed, presented as pages in a comic book), which is really all about atmosphere and sound and is totally brilliant.

Bottom line, don't go into this expecting a heavy metal record-- it sounds nothing like Faith No More, or the Melvins, or Slayer. It does sound a very little bit like Mr. Bungle, but not really. Naked City is the only precedent for this album-- if you liked them, you'll probably like this. If you've never heard them and you've got an open mind for somewhat difficult to digest music, where genres come and go, bound together by blasts of metal, check out both quite frankly, you might find a lot to love.

As cool as the cd case/cover and artwork is and as cool as the concept is... this cd is useless. There's some cool parts and it sets atmoshpere well- but just admit you've shelfed this and are not going to listen to it much ever again. For those of you that will ACTUALLY listen to this MANY more times like a regular cd... god bless yah. I'm down for getting more enjoyment out of stuff in life. They better get back to "Director's Cut" form.

4 out of 5 stars frightening..........2007-03-02

This album basically sounds like a journey to hell, or through a horror film or whatever... but yet, it isn't quite as simple as that.

Do not buy this expecting 'real music' with vocals and song structure ect. ect.. This is just one long track, but it is way more than a 'bunch of noises' and yes, more than just 'ambience'. This is a beautifully haunting soundscape and work of art in my opinion, but thats the point of this album. Opinions. Some will love this and call it a piece of art, and others will hate it and call it a piece of garbage. It is completely according to your own personal definition of music. I cannot reccomend this album, because even though it works for me, I cannot say with conviction that it will work for you. If you are open minded, and looking for something unusual and original, look no further.. on the other hand if you are looking for 'music', then walk on by.

4 out of 5 stars (By the way I'm an adult-I just don't want to get an account because I'm lazy) In the right place and time..........2007-02-16

this album can take you on a strange and darkly disturbing journey into a sinister hospital with dimly lit hallways, surgery without anesthesia, and an overall sense of dread and in some parts, short spurts of mass hysteria. However, this is definitely not the kind of album to listen to in your car on the way to work. To fully appreciate the dark moods that Patton was trying to accomplish with this album, I would suggest turning off all the lights, turning this on to full volume, lie back, close your eyes and prepare to go on a nightmarish trip.
If you're familiar with the other albums by Fantomas or some of the more experimental work by Mike Patton in general, such a Mr. Bungle and can dig that stuff, then I would recommend this album if only for its novelty-this one's a real humdinger, and out of the four that Fantomas has released I would say it's probably the least accesible. However for those of us that can appreciate extremely different music and aren't afraid to take on an album as epicly haunting as Delirium Cordia, then I would say it's definitely a good one for your collection.
The only reason why I am giving this four stars instead of five is for the last 20 or so minutes of static where literally nothing happens until maybe the very last three seconds of the composition. I thought that Mike Patton could've shortened this section a little bit, it still would've had the same effect in the end where those last three seconds take you by surprise-but anyways...I'm ramblin' again.

1 out of 5 stars Delerium Boredia.......2006-05-12

Okay, I've been down w/ MP since The Real Thing and the first Bungle and I gotta say this album is among his three albums that COMPLETELY SUCK. If you're reading these reviews because someone told you about this group, start with Director's Cut as that one is the closest to real songs. If you're feeling good after that cd, move on to either Suspended Animation or the self-titled because those albums rock. THIS albums is a 55 minute snooze fest with no more than 5 minutes of good stuff spaced out over the duration of the whole cd - which isn't even broken into individual tracks! I think if you fast forward like twelve minutes into it you'll come across an eerie Fantomas-signature style of sound that lasts all of like 15 seconds before going back to the monotonous boredom of the cd. My rating system is relative to the previous efforts of the bands that I rate. I am giving this only 1 star because I hold Fantomas at a much higher standard than say Pearl Jam, or some other equally mediocre group. (if they put out this album I'd probably give it a 3 or 4) I listen to all of the other Fantomas CDs repeatedly, but not this one. If you absloutely MUST hear this album, do it in a dark atmosphere at a loud volume when you're about to fall asleep. (it will mess with your head)

5 out of 5 stars What just happened to my ears?.......2006-04-27

Every time I listen to this 'thing', this epic 'thing', I'm at once completely frightened and laughing. I actually begin showing warning signs of shizophrenia. I question my own sanity in the first place, and then this sonic monster eats my brain.

Imagine being stalked by weird native peoples through a cave, which is completely cold, but spots of it are on fire. If you look above you, you can see the entire universe, but visibility in front of you is barely 1 meter. THAT is Delirium Cordia.

And you know what's stranger than odd? I've heard other albums by these guys and can't stand them. Congratulations, Mike Patton, you are one weird and talented person.

Oh, and if you're a Faith No More fan, this band sounds nothing like that one.

Buy this album, but not if you're prone to acid flashbacks or are showing symptoms of Paranoid Schizophrenia.

Weird, wild, and sometimes wonderful, this live recording (deftly captured at Slim's in San Francisco on New Year's Eve 2000) is from bizarre underground "supergroup" the Fantomas, featuring Buzz Osborne of Melvins infamy and former Faith No More frontman Mike Patton, in this case, performing both Fantomas and Melvins tunes. The term "tunes" should be used loosely, as many of the album's 18 cuts are, as titles like "Musthing with the Phunts" and "Liquorton Gooksburg" suggest, exercises in musical oddity and excess. When guitarist-singer Osborne joins Patton (also of Mr. Bungle) in Fantomas, which features Slayer drummer Dave Lombardi, there's a cacophony of influences, from death metal to experimental to Black Sabbath. On Millennium Monsterwork, "Hooch" and the rumbling "Night Goat" from the Melvins album Houdini are included, as is "Mombius Hibachi" from Honky. "Cape Fear" and the gothic-into-punk-metal version of "The Omen," originally found on the Fantomas' Director's Cut album (full of bizarre reworkings of movie themes!), butt up against the painful noise of "White Men Are the Vermin of the Earth," the relatively straightahead raw rock of "Ol' Black Stooges," and the childlike spookiness of "Skin Horse." If Millennium Monsterworks is the ultimate in musical indulgence and esoterica, there's nonetheless a pleasing power and freedom to be gleaned amid the chaos. --Katherine Turman

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT.......2006-06-21

IT SEEMS LIKE BARELY ANYONE LIKES THIS CD BUT I LOVE IT SO MUCH! I AM A HUGE FAN OF THE MELVINS AND THE FANTOMAS, AND THEY ARE GREAT TOGETHER! THIS CD IS VERY INTENSE AND IT'S NOT LIKE ANYTHING YOU'LL HEAR ON THE RADIO. I LOVE BOTH OF THE SINGERS, BUT IN SOME OF THE SONGS WHERE THEY SING TOGETHER IT DOESN'T SOUND THAT GREAT. I STILL HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ALBUM TO ANY MELVINS OR FANTOMAS FAN, OR ANYONE WHO'S LOOKING FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT AND HEAVY.

5 out of 5 stars it seems like i'm the only one who likes this album..........2006-06-21

First of all im not a kid, i'm just writing on here because I don't have a email to an account with. I am a big fan of the Melvins and the only Fantomas album I've heard is suspended animation but I love it. I was browsing thru amazon when I found this. I gave the sound clips a listen and it sounded interesting and different. So I decided to buy it, and I love it! It has a few flaws so I could rate it four stars or maybe even three stars but I love it so much that i can't. I highly recommend this/

3 out of 5 stars They came so close.......2005-10-03

This is a good album but there are a few problems that keep it from reaching it's full potential.

Problem 1 - The quality. The drums sound pretty bad on this recording. It really is painful to listen to sometimes but for the most part you can ignore it because Dale and Dave are great drummers. The bass is very difficult to hear as well.

Problem 2 - Some of the songs just don't sound good. The Omen and Page 1 come to mind.

Problem 3 - Not enough Melvins and some of the Melvins songs that are here are cut in half. (Hooch and Skin Horse)

Problem 4 - And this is the big one, the entire setlist isn't here! Below is the setlist that they played that night.

01 - Sacrifice
02 - Black Stooges
03 - Page 01
04 - Page 02
05 - Page 04
06 - Night Goat
07 - Promise Me
08 - The Omen
09 - Cherub

11 - Page 29

14 - Chariot Choogle
15 - Dave Scott Stone Noise
16 - Mary Lady Bobby Kins
17 - Lovely Butterfly
18 - Page 14
19 - Jew Boy Flowerhead
20 - Page 06

22 - Hooch
23 - Mombius Hibachi
24 - Page 23
25 - Skin Horse

28 - Page 28
29 - Experiment in Terror
30 - Let God Be Your Gardener
31 - AMAZON
32 - Let It All Be(encore)

Yea, it's depressing knowing that a few of those weren't on it. It also would have been nice if this was a dvd instead of a cd.

But despite these flaws I do find myself listening to this quite a bit. It took a few listens to get past the flaws but once you do it's a pretty cool live album. I'd only recomend this for the die hard Fantomas fans.

2 out of 5 stars a couple good songs, but overall not impressive.......2005-09-12

This albums has two good songs ('Ol Black Stooges and Bit) but other than that this album isn't very impressive. Mike Patton's vocal range sounds very limited and often not in tune. His vocals are the least impressive part on this album.
The only thing about this album that make it worth having are the 2 good songs, 'Ol Black Stooges and Bit. I was also disappointed that Chariot Choogle wasn't on this CD. I wish they had performed that song.

1 out of 5 stars Better The Melvins without Patton..........2005-08-14

I think this is one of the worst works named "Melvins".Named, because of this is not The Melvins but just Fantomas & Patton...Everyone who wants to buy a Melvins cd have to look further. It's better the Melvins live at Slim's(same place of this)for New Years Eve 2001/2002,if you have luck to find it somewhere...

The special spiral-bound edition is gone but not to worry, you shan't be deprived. Packaged in a digipak with a 30 page booklet of all of the same beautiful Yoshitomo Nara original artwork. This edition will remain in print in perpetuity.

4 out of 5 stars Cartoon violence revisited.......2007-04-12

Although not the best fantomas album, it's still awesome in my view. A mashup of noise, jingles and thrash metal. excellent

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant jump cut record........2006-10-24

Fantomas' "Suspended Animation" is a great record, not for everyone, certainly. Mike Patton, clearly influenced by John Zorn's Naked City project and the work of Carl Stalling, has constructed a jump cut record that is not dissimilar to much of Naked City's output-- this is one thing I've found somewhat underdocumented reading reviews of the album, but having spent a little time listening to it, this was my first impression.

Patton does, however, find his own voice as he seamlessly blends genres-- notably cartoon music in the Stalling model and endless sound effects. Like Naked City, it can be frustrating at times when you find an idea you like and its development is abandoned in exchange for something else, but the statement as a whole is what's really important. Like all Fantomas records, there's a high theatrical feels on this one as it slides between various styles, always returning to a sort of sludgey metal feel and a cartoon feel. Patton's vocals are largely wordless, though there is some lyric here and there.

One thing that I see a lot of is fans of metal seeking Fantomas material having heard its a "metal supergroup"-- if you don't like experimental music, you probably won't like this one, regardless of who's in the band-- most of these guys have been associated with Zorn's work more recently than with metal bands, and it shows. On the other hand, if you are a metal fan and you're a bit open minded, there may be enough here to latch onto to allow you to develop an appreciation for it, but Fantomas is not something that will come easy-- you sort of have to get used to hearing it before it makes sense.

If you're a fan of Patton's work with Fantomas (even if you disliked "Delerium Cordia") or for that matter with Mr. Bungle, this is a good one to check out. I'd also recommend this to John Zorn/Naked City fans, they'll find quite a bit to like on this one (ditto for "General Patton vs. the X-ecutioners"). Conversely, if you did like this, check out Zorn's Naked City band, I think you'll find it very rewarding.

5 out of 5 stars Thirty tracks of imagination.......2005-07-30

I don't even know where to begin. It's hard to write a review when you have "bring back that love and feeling" playing in the background...
Anyways.
As a musician, this is one of those albums that is either going to inspire you or make you want to quit because it is that good. I have yet to find a band that can match the intensity/originality of Fantomas. The fact that they can play live is amazing in itself. This is a great album for anyone who is looking for pure imagination and is tired of the same old basic song format. Suspended Animation pushes the boundries of what people label as music and opens a million doors of color, sound and emotion. Personaly, I am always quick to listen to something that has an element of originality and with Suspended Animation you get the whole package. Buy this album! Any album that will scare your grandparents and make your friends question your sanity is a good one.

4 out of 5 stars Suspend the "Animation".......2005-06-14

Warning: The below album is an experience, and an intense one. It should not be listened to if your mind isn't open.

Okay, enough of that.

In early 2004, Fantômas produced the dark, mesmerizing "Delirium Cordia," a strange concept album with only one epic song... which happened to be 74 minutes long. It was a risk, and it paid off. So after something like that, what can a band do that doesn't sound like backsliding? Well, do the reverse.

Enter "Suspended Animation," an odd concept album built around the month of April. The band opts for faster, more cartoony songs this time around, but retains the mad-genius-doing-prog-metal-on-acid sound. It's the sort of music that one can't have mixed opinions on -- either you love this stuff, or you loathe it.

Frontman Mike Patton imbues "Suspended Animation with hints of blues, weird synth, jazz, metal, post-rock, strange sound effects and just about every other kind of sound, with some bombastic drums and razor-sharp riffs. The music should be a complete mess, but instead it sounds like Patton has managed to trap some rabid sound waves in a box. It's chaos, but controlled chaos -- the type that fascinates rather than repels.

And soaring over it all is the voice of Patton himself, sounding a bit demented. He's got an almost impossibly flexible voice, and the man puts it to extremely good use here. He's backed by the excellent Buzz Osbourne, guitarist for the Melvins, and nearly-as-good Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo.

Since the album is centered on the month of April there are... thirty tracks. Not one. Not ten. Thirty. Patton keeps things moving with cartoonish sounds and quick cuts from one song to the next. It's sillier than the morbid "Delirium Cordia" was, but by no means is it goofy or lightweight. Despite the closing sample, that is -- it borders on goofiness here and there, but never crosses the line.

It may not be dark and sprawling, but "Suspended Animation" is just as good as its predecessor. Mad, whirling and bursting with chaotic energies.
