Columbia Records rushed this compilation of patriotic and inspirational favorites into production in the wake of the September 11, 2001, attacks. The title song is a new version by Celine Dion similar to the performance she gave on the Tribute to Heroes telethon, while John Mellencamp's "Peaceful World" is included in an alternate, acoustic treatment. Each listener may find his or her own favorites, but few will be left unmoved by a selection that also includes Bruce Springsteen's "Land of Hope and Dreams," Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge over Troubled Water," and renderings of "America the Beautiful," "This Land Is Your Land," and "Amazing Grace" by, respectively, Frank Sinatra, Pete Seeger, and Tramaine Hawkins. Bill Withers's "Lean on Me" closes the disc on a plainspoken note that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of rescuers and other Americans since the tragedies. A back-cover note promises that a "substantial portion of the proceeds received by Sony Music [Columbia's parent company] from sales of this album will be donated to the Twin Towers Fund." --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Blown away............2007-03-06

I am not a Celine Dion fan normally, but stumbled onto this mix for many of the other titles on this CD. The brief download does not give her version of God Bless America justice. This arrangement builds slowly, eliciting "what the heck are you listening to?" comments and grows until anyone in listening range has goose bumps. I played it while stopped for hours on the freeway in front of Moore Park College where the long lines formed for Ronald Reagan's casket review and people on the side of the road actually gathered around the car and asked me to replay it. A must for any fan of patriotic music.

5 out of 5 stars Uplifting!.......2005-06-20

This is a very nice patriotic CD with some great songs. My favorites are God Bless America, sung by Celine Dion. America The Beautful, sung by Frank Sinatra. This Land Is Your Land, sung by Peter Seeger. Peaceful World, sung by John Mellencamp. Blowin' In The Wind, sung by Bob Dylan. Bridge Oer Troubled Water, sung by Simon & Garfunkel. Good Bless The U.S.A, sung by Lee Greenwood. And The Star-Spangled Banner, sung by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The songs are all beautiful and uplifting!

4 out of 5 stars A Good Americana Compilation.......2003-10-27

This compilation was made soon after the 9/11 in a wake of patriotic feelings among Americans. It comprises songs of different genres, from rock ballads ("Peaceful World" by John Mellencamp, "Lean on Me" by Bill Withers) to ballads ("Bridge over Troubled Water" by Simon&Garfunkel), to big Americana hits ("God Bless America" by Celine Dion, "America the Beautiful" by Frank Sinatra, "This Land Is Your Land" by Pete Seeger, "We Shall Overcome" by Mahalia Jackson) to the National Anthem "The Star Spangled Banner" by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, plus "Hero" by Mariah Carey, "There's a Hero" by Billy Gilman, and a few more.

This CD is a good compilation of songs that may lift the spirits of the nation, as well as some truly inspirational melodies. Performances by Tramaine Hawkins ("Amazing Grace"), Billy Gilman, Celine Dion, Simon&Garfunkel, Bill Withers are the gems of this CD. The same can be said about the National Anthem, though you might find some acappella version (by Lee Ann Rimes, for example) not less appealing.

Personally I bought this CD because of Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA". But this turned out to be the worst track. It is probably some remix. Almost nothing is left from the original version, neither its marching touch, nor the integrity that left your skin covered with goosebumps, inspired you and made you realise the true spirit of American patriotism. The version from this CD is more on the jazz, relaxed side, which is killing for such a song.

On the whole, this CD deserves your attention if you need a compilation of Americana music, or at least a flavour of it.

5 out of 5 stars A great CD, powerful and moving.......2003-10-24

True to its title the music CD God Bless America is a masterful tribute to America. This collection of patriotic music includes many soul-stirring songs; I especially like the selections by Lee Greenwood, Frank Sinatra, and Bill Withers. All of the songs on this CD are powerful and will remind you how great this country truly is.

God Bless America is great for working, driving, or listening to all by itself. I guarantee that you will not regret purchasing this collection of American songs. This CD draws together an immense pool of talent and is extraordinarily successful at illustrating the greatest nation in the world.

4 out of 5 stars Moving Patriotic tribute!!!.......2003-05-25

Well done! Loved Celine Dion's version of God Bless America in tribute for her adopted county. Pete Seeger's This land is your land is equally great. Has the beloved Lee Greenwood's God Bless the USA!

5 out of 5 stars Pressing On.......2004-07-21

If you buy this cd and ONLY listen to the Chicago Mass Choir absolutely tear into "Pressing On", you will have gotten more than your money's worth. Absolutely stunning version. I had previously bought another "Gospel Tribute To Bob Dylan" cd, and was not moved at all. I cannot say the same about this one. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Wry new soul food for sure, variously rendered.......2004-02-13

from Dylan's house in Malibu where he can "see all the way to Ha/Wa/ee" and into the soul of man and god in the fallen forlorn new world order of reification, war machines, false prophets, corruption in principalities and powers that seem so unending but are falling apart even as I write and BD keeps writing/singing on(say, Rome toppled by the Pauline principles as registered in Gospel Music serving a different higher-lyric order than that of the big studio markets). This recording is (for me at least) an essential part of the Dylan canon, too, taking it into Baptist churches and the smoke-white hills and coal mines of west virginia.

5 out of 5 stars Breath of Fresh Air (despite an alleged stale history).......2004-01-14

As reviewers have rightfully observed, Gotta Serve Somebody: The Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan is not merely another Dylan "tribute." Its 55 minutes and 11 songs are on a different plane entirely. And the curious fact of the Minnesota native himself participating should not go unnoticed.

It took some kind of courage to pay homage to this particular period of Bob Dylan's career, a period that still can evoke a scoff or dismissive chuckle from even the most diehard fan. Because this project had humble beginnings and likely had its fair share of painful moments, it must have given executive producer Jeff Gaskill tremendous joy when it was birthed...and an outside world could finally see it and feel it and think it and breathe it.

Although Shirley Caesar kicks off the CD with a pre-song rap which includes these words--"I wanna share Bob Dylan's song with you"--it may well be the case that she's done to "Gotta Serve Somebody" what Jimi Hendrix did to "All Along the Watchtower." Like Hendrix, she wasted no time in making it her own (she recorded the song in 1980); Dylan even said, way back in 1985, that he liked her version better than his. Caesar, in this take, makes heartfelt and emotional declarations that seem anything but weak, alludes to the Hebrew scriptures at the beginning of the song (Joshua) and at the end (Chronicles) while her backup singers--with their occasional "Serve my Jesus!"--serve as an antidote to phony baloney revisionist history, i.e., Dylan really wasn't/isn't singing about Jesus, or if he was/is, that somehow he cannot claim his Jewish heritage.

When Dylan recently sang "I Believe in You" in concert, one observer noted how it still retains the original passion and power of its '79-'80 airings. Dottie People's version on this CD makes a valiant run at the original, with a strong, convincing voice. The Fairfield Four's stab at "Are You Ready?" easily works since the medicine of Dylan's words--words like "heaven or hell," "destruction," "judgment," "swift sword," and "Armageddon"--go down smoother through the conduit of a legendary gospel group (instead of, say, a "spokesman" for the 1960s). Dylan friend Aaron Neville gives "Saving Grace," a song Dylan has recently sung, wonderful treatment. Its line, "Wherever I am welcome is where I will be" may apply not only to Dylan's destiny in eternity, but also to the earthy locations of his gigs in recent years (before U.S. presidents, rabbis, and the Pope, in gambling casinos and at outdoor fairs in the mud...wherever he is welcome).

Regina McCrary's handling of "Pressing On," with the able support of the Chicago Mass Choir, must have sent shivers up the spines of those who heard her open Dylan's concerts back in 1979-1980 (what may have seemed like a chore at the time--an obstacle to Dylan taking the stage--turned out to be a privilege). As has been said, Dylan's performance with Mavis Staples on the final track, "Gonna Change My Way of Thinking," must be experienced. One reviewer has noted its blues orientation (very true), but also said the song is "only vaguely religious." Although we know how Dylan would react to a label like "religious," this is still wonderfully ironic. In this final track, I distinctly hear Dylan growling out lines--that he penned in 2002--that relate to, why, daily prayer ("Every day you got to pray for guidance / Every day you got to give yourself a chance"); a personal relationship with God ("Oh, Lord, you know I have no friend without you"); and the Second Coming ("Jesus is coming / He's coming back to gather His jewels"). You get the feeling that Dylan wasn't just whistling Dixie during those infamous stage raps in 1979-1980. We also get the corny humor at the beginning of this rewritten song too, so it's alright, we can also smile.

"When he was doing the previous album, Slow Train Coming, in Muscle Shoals, he'd had this vision of Jesus, of the hand coming down and these hands reaching up. And he said at the same time he had this vision, he saw the whole album too--all the songs, everything, the whole thing was there. And he said, 'What you've drawn here was exactly what I saw'." These were the words that the late John Bauldie heard from Tony Wright, the artist who Dylan hired to paint the original cover to the Saved album. Now, over two decades later, this personal vision of Dylan's has been interpreted--through Gotta Serve Somebody: The Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan--with passion and respect by a formidable group of artists. The results are pleasing to the ear and soul.

Do yourself a favor in this New Year of 2004...spend ten or fifteen dollars and get this collection of songs. It has recently been recognized by the Grammy folks in two categories: nominated for "Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album" and "Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals" (the Dylan/Staples duet). So there you have it, "traditional," "soul," "gospel," and "pop," a few labels one could arguably apply to Dylan without even uttering the ubiquitous "folk" or "rock"; or the "blues" that were instilled into the revamped version of "Gonna Change My Way of Thinking" on this CD. Incidentally, this same song is a surefire home remedy for the blues, insomnia, and/or reading SnoozeWeek (inside chatter for those who've heard it).

4 out of 5 stars Dylan songs well-served by gospel greats.......2003-11-07

Bob Dylan's voice and songs are so uniquely his own that it's a rare artist who can cover the man without inviting unflattering comparisons. But on "Gotta Serve Somebody," that's not a problem. The bright lights of gospel music assembled to interpret the songs Dylan wrote for 1979's "Slow Train Coming" and 1980's "Saved" make themselves right at home. This is THEIR turf more than Dylan's, and the performances only prove what many of us knew all along: that Dylan's controversial "born-again" period was among his most fertile. The best songs from Dylan's collaboration with the Lord not only stand comfortably beside the best work in his canon, but also hold their own in the entire gospel genre.

The topper, for me, is "Pressing On," and the Chicago Mass Choir give it the epic performance it deserves, one at least equal to Dylan's own version on "Saved." The Sound of Blackness do right by the same album's "Solid Rock," and Aaron Neville lends his admirable pipes to a lovely rendition of "Saving Grace." One of Dylan's overly preachy and arrogant Christian tracts, "When You Gonna Wake Up" from "Slow Train Coming," gets a dramatic overhaul from Lee Williams and the Spiritual QCs that is one of the album's highlights.

Of course, Dylan also wrote some clinkers during this period. The title track of "Saved" never gave off sparks and it doesn't do it here despite a valiant effort from the Mighty Clouds of Joy. The provocative lyrics and an energetic performance made "Gonna Change My Way of Thinking" a highlight of "Slow Train Coming," but the monotonous song didn't merit a revival and Dylan's noisy duet with Mavis Staples on the new version is saved only by the brief conversation between the two during the intro. It has a delightfully loony quality that one wishes had found its way into Dylan's film "Masked and Anonymous."

The main quibble I have with this disc is what was not included. Where's "Every Grain of Sand," the one unquestioned masterpiece from this period? Its absence doesn't detract from the excellence of what is here, but if any song has earned a place in this lineup, it's that one.

A benefit CD for Earthjustice, Where We Live touts "the Universal Right to Clean Air & Clean Water." Sixteen tracks in various rootsy styles wind a thread through nature imagery ("Like a tree planted by the water, I shall not be moved," sings Pops Staples; Bob Dylan is represented by his great, forgotten 1971 single "Watching the River Flow") and a more general theme of peace and social justice (Willie Nelson's "Living in the Promiseland," the Neville Brothers' "Sister Rosa"). Veteran singer-activists Sweet Honey in the Rock link the two with "More Than a Paycheck," a song about the perils of pollution and simply trying to keep food on the table. Cannily promoting a theme of Christian spirituality (the Staples and Nevilles tracks, along with those by Maria Muldaur and Bonnie Raitt, Tina Turner and Robert Cray, and John Hammond and Tom Waits) as a corollary to environmental support, the album also seeks to pull the sense of righteousness away from corporate and right-wing political interests. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Great diverse mix-soulful, groovy, upbeat & surprise ending!.......2003-10-07

Yeah, the Capt. Beefheart bit at the end is jarring but hilarious. According to the track notes (and you can read all about this cd & listen to some of the tracks at www.wherewelive.org) the Capt. sung it over the phone to the album's compiler and you can hear them laughing at the end! It's his first "recording" in years...

I think all of the tracks are considered hard-to-find if not impossible. This freshness makes all the tracks worthy, even if you know the artist inside out (like me & Willie Nelson). Some we're all just hungry for more of, like Norah Jones. Definately in the soulful & groovy category, nothing hard or pulsing. Good all-round anytime music.

5 out of 5 stars Great Gift Idea for the Holidays.......2003-10-06

1. I hate shopping, especially during the holidays.
2. One year I tried avoiding shopping by making a donation to a charitable organization in the name of family/friends, didn't go over too well. Nice thought...but let's face it, everyone likes opening presents.

This CD solves both my problems. Most compilation CD's usually have a few good songs, this one has a ton. A great variety of artists and styles, really has something for everyone.

My holiday shopping is going to be alot easier this year, and I'll be giving gifts to help a great cause.

4 out of 5 stars Rare cuts, nice mix.......2003-10-02

I got a review copy for a newsletter I do. Wow. I usually don't go for compilations - but the mix here is really nice. (Beware the surprise track by Captain Beefheart at the end designed to wake you up.)

Need a groovy dinner disc? This is it. And for a good cause it seems.

Played this one for the girlfriend and she asked me to play it again. A rarity around my house.

Pick it up.

5 out of 5 stars Good Cause, Better Music.......2003-10-02

This is a magnificent collection of cuts from wonderful artists to benefit Earthjustice, the nonprofit environmental law firm that is busting its chops trying to stop the Bush administration from destroying all that is healthy and beautiful on this earth of ours.
But that, in fact, is beside the point. This eclectic compilation stands on its own. (It could as well have been called "Biological Diversity" as "Where We Live.") The loose theme--save the earth--save ourselves, is carried through the performances by Norah Jones (a song called "Peace" that is not on her first CD), Bob Dylan ("Watching the River Flow"), Willie Nelson ("Living in the Promiseland"), Los Lobos ("What's Going On"), Mose Allison, Ruben Blades, Maria Muldaur and Bonnie Raitt, Tina Turner and Robert Cray, John Hammond and Tom Waits, Sweet Honey in the Rock, The Neville Brothers--I mean, what's not to like here?
Politics aside, this is a great collection.

        SOUNDTRACK

This 21-song collection of traditional and original music from the documentary film, Bob Dylan 1975-1981 Rolling Thunder and The Gospel Years, features Dylans former band members Scarlet Rivera (violin), Rob Stoner (bass), Regina McCrary (vocals), and Bruce Langhorne (guitar/tambourine) along with myself and my band, Highway 61 Revisited, The Worlds Only Bob Dylan Tribute Band. Together, we set out together to recreate the magic and passion of the music from Bob Dylans Rolling Thunder and Gospel Years to help bring the film to life. As on Desire, you will hear breathtaking violin work from Scarlet Rivera, and as on Slow Train Coming, Saved, and Shot of Love, you will be moved by Regina McCrarys passionate Gospel voice. Bruce Langhorne, Dylans guitarist and tambourine player from his early albums, plays on most of the tracks, while bassist Rob Stoner contributes original music. I am sure you will agree this historic gathering of Dylans musicians for the film soundtrack has produced some of the finest music youve ever heard. (contains no Bob Dylan songs).  Joel Gilbert, January 2006

5 out of 5 stars What music is all about.......2007-02-14

A classically trained musician, Garth Hudson brought his formidable musical skills and creativity to the world of rock as The Band's keyboard virtuoso, wind player, and arranger. In Live At The Wolf, Garth, on acoustic piano, and his wife, Maud, on voice, show how dazzlingly far beyond that earlier music their horizons now extend. Garth has said that his recent keyboard playing is better than any he did as a Band member. His improvisations, showcased here in three original piano pieces and his elegant song accompaniments, seamlessly combine jazz, roots, blues, and classical elements. In "International Medley," Garth adds patriotic tunes to this mix, and in "Concert Hora," he enriches his palette still further by performing a klezmer-like, Romanian folk dance melody on accordion. Amid all these diverse influences, one also senses in Garth's playing rock's sublime essence. Maud Hudson is a singer of flair, passion and wit, who beautifully synchronizes her rich and expressive voice with her husband's most ethereal phrasings. Together, the Hudsons have fashioned a new musical language that incorporates, yet stands apart from, all of the styles they explore.

Garth and Maud use this new language to make each of the album's song selections uniquely their own, from the early gospel "Stand By Me," to the sorrowful jazz standard "Willow Weep For Me," to the rock and roll classic, "Young Blood." They transform the lament for lost love "It Makes No Difference" into a heartfelt ode of remembrance for The Band's Rick Danko, the song's original vocalist. On Garth's impressionistic "Beyond the Breakers" (words by Eric Andersen), they wonderfully blend word and tone images of wind, water, color, and light. "The Weight" attains a sacred dimension when Garth prefaces this Band favorite with a 16th century hymn. Maud's excellent blues original, "You'll Be Thinkin'," packs buoyancy and verve. Her performance of Bob Dylan's "Blind Willie McTell" is stunning, as she speaks, sings, and whispers its words to summon ghosts of Southern slavery. Shining throughout every song are Garth and Maud's consummate artistry, gentleness of spirit, and love of music.

Live At the Wolf commemorates two significant dates. The September 2002 concert that it records was the first at London, Ontario's new Wolf Performance Hall, and also marks the beginning of the Hudsons' career as a performing duo. The CD's 2005 release celebrates Garth and Maud's 25th wedding anniversary.

This album is delightful and inexhaustible. You will never get tired of listening to it. In its understated way, it makes musical history.
