A "wise" purchase (somehow that's all I could come up with).......2006-08-22

I had heard of August Darnell and his prestige as a formidable lyricist and highly entertaining musical personality simply by exposure to a wide variety of music, but I'd never been previously acquainted with his own music. I bought this record on recommendation of Robert Christgau, the literate, renowned, perennially caustic Village Voice "Dean of Rock Critics", and couldn't've been more pleasantly surprised by the excellent opener "Annie, I'm Not Your Daddy" - not because the lyrics were witty, though they were indeed amusing, but because of its instant melodicism and gripping Island rhythms. This is something akin to island-pop, an ideal summer mixture. The music is very slick but that sort of thing has never bothered me, in fact sometimes I prefer a little gloss and it makes each track more immediate in this context. The rest of Wise Guy continues to grow on me each day; this record is a pleasure sans guilt, and I'd recommend starting your Kid Creole collection here, without having become acquainted with any of his other albums, simply because I've become so hooked by it. Plus it's remastered. So why not get going?

At Last!.......2005-08-25

I have waited a long, long time for this album to come out on CD. Along with Lord Upminister by Ian Dury and Speaking in Tongues by The Talking Heads, these three albums made 1983 a very fun musical year. Incredibly humorous lyrics, great beats and The Coconuts... What more could anybody want? 'Stool Pigeon', 'Annie, I'm Not Your Daddy', 'Imitation', 'Loving You Made a Fool Out Of Me' all great songs. If you ever were lucky enough to see Kid Creole in concert, you will know what I mean.

...is the motto of the city of Liverpool. A city which, in 1984 when this record was made, was having unwanted leisure time forced upon it in the form of mass unemployment as well as suffering seamingly terminal urban decay, riots and industrial strife, all of which galvanised a face-off between the left-wing city council and Thatcher's centralised rate-cappers. Out of all this emerged one of the most remarkable records of its era. Helplessness and defiance, frustration and rage, bitterness and, ultimately, optimism and reaffirmation are all here in a concept album which has reality and truth at its heart instead of wizards, elves and dragons. Pete Wylie, once described as the second greatest songwriter to come out of liverpool, commited commercial - but not artistic - suicide with these truely political songs. "Weekends" eloquently observes the irony of having leisure time but no means to enjoy it, "The Lost Generation" is a rallying cry for the dispossessed of the "Me" decade, "I Know there was Something" dips into the crushing inertia of a failing relationship, while "Come Back" somehow manages to mix anger, defiance, motown, hope, guitars and self-belief in the most thrilling of ways. All this interwoven with Eugene Lange's vitriolic scouse proto-rap rants. Strummer and Jones, Weller, Dammers and Bragg cannot touch this record. Magnificent.

Although there is plenty of truth in the saying, "there's nothing like being there", it's also true that good times and memories can be captured and enjoyed time and time, again. Such is the case with die Schlauberger's(dSb) newest recording: "dSb Live".

As the title clearly indicates, dSb has finally completed production of this long-awaited release, which will allow fans to take home a genuine slice of the "fun and energy", that is the signature of a live dSb show. First mentioned in last year's newsletter, the live CD was recorded during the band's 2003 tour, and is the band's fifth recording and fourth full-length production. A GREAT band. Listened to this CD for a week straight. It's as good as their live shows, which are incredible. Some of the European reviewers called this cover tunes and redone traditional music. Y'all are much closer to the source and it may seem so. Here in the States, the presentation in such a new and refreshing manner is a welcomed change from the majority of the fest bands.

O.k., When I ordered this cd, I thought to myself "please god, not another ball washer". If you're freestyle fan, you definetly know where I'm comin' from. Normally, I don't dig female freestyle vocalists because they got too much of a bubble gum, hairspray flava. But there's two on this cd that got me stroked. The 1st is "Heart and Soul" by LAISON and 2nd is "How I love him" by CYNTHIA. Both are very well produced with nice hooks, beats, vocals etc.

There are some good songs like "only in my dreams" and songs by Cynthia, Michelle Diaz, and Jesse. The problem that i had with this cd is that it looks cheaply done. The cover is terrible and badly printed,the artists names are spelled wrong like lil'suzy and even their own artist Michelle Diaz, there is alot of errors and confuses the shopper when they want to buy the artists single or album. But it is not a bad cd , there are alot of good songs,just bad artistic style and a couple of the song on the cd are not freestyle. Just an ok comp.
