I may have to buy this - couldn't believe "Store bought - store thougth" was left off the "Best of Flock" from iTunes. and THEN, if you're not familiar with iTunes - you can't move the music you "buy" onto a Palm T/X or other (non-iPod) mp3 player; that bites.

. . . anyway, "Dinosaur Swamps" was a little more commercial, but I like many of the D.S. tracks better than the "Flock #1" fill-in (jam) tracks. Course, D.S. has some jam/fill-in tracks too, but all fun. Great band, very original, very fun in a heavy-sorta-way.

Someone wrote, "better than BS&T and Chicago" ummmmm no I don't think so. The Flock arrangements are more sparse, more dissonent, more bombastic, less dynamic, but still quite good. Well worth the investment for the music-lover who is sick of repetition and over-kill on public airwaves.

5 out of 5 stars If You Remember The Flock, You'll Love This.......2006-11-03

Jerry Goodman's violin on "Truth" is every bit as entertaining now as it was in 1969. If you have ever seen the band live, this will transport you back to that time and place almost 40 years ago.(ouch!)Some of the lyrics have not aged well, they weren't remarkable then, but, musically it is still great to listen to. Nice classic to have in the collection.

5 out of 5 stars Music that splashes with bright colors.......2003-04-11

This collection is the fusing of the two commercially released Flock albums. The first album, "The Flock" is one of the most unique rock-based albums of all time. That's where the five stars come from. My review of this album, listed under the title "The Flock", gives a song-by-song description of what makes this music great.

The second album "Dinosaur Swamps" is new to me. I own a vinyl copy that I found last year in a used record shop, and being familiar with "The Flock" and never having never heard this before I was quite excited to get it, but ultimately disappointed. I have to admit I should give it another listen or two to give it a fair shot, but my impression is that this was one of those bands that just had one good album in them, and this wasn't it.

So I recommend "The Flock", but you can't go wrong plunking down a few extra bucks and getting this combined collection.

5 out of 5 stars Urianian Sircus-masterpiece!.......2006-11-25

I got this on vinyl back in the seventies. I eagerly awaited it's release, as I already had 'The Flock'-their first release. I was listening to it on my ancient gramophone player which I just wound up for the occasion. New needle and all! My disappointment increased by the minute. I was about to give up, and violently scrape the needle through the friggin' grooves--and then it happened... Like a voice from god, or that feeling when a strong narcotic kicks in (I only did that in hospital under strict medical supervision) The last track.. 'Uranian Sircus' is well worth the price of admission, and more. Skip all of the other 6 tracks. What a masterpiece track 7 is. If they could have written a whole album along that theme, you would probably the best 'concept' album this side of Uranus (pardon my expression, depending on how you pronounce it, urine or anus, it sounds bad either way-sorry). By the track names, it seems like they were trying to come up with a concept. Album starts with'Green Slice'-should have been 'Brown Slice, Anyhoo, that said, I still love the album, but I give 4.5 stars to 'Uranian Sircus' and the remaning .5 star split up amongst the first 6 tracks. What a truly original, creative work of art that track is. By the way, If you get the compilation 'Flock Rock'-get it just for the unreleased stuff-they actually left out 'Uranian Sircus'. That would be like leaving out 'Honkey Tonk Women' from a Rolling Stones best of. Who would do such a thing?

4 out of 5 stars Quirky But Quite Good.......2005-06-09

Imagine the horn band Chicago teaming up with King Crimson to make an album, and then a couple of rock musicians stop in along with a couple of country musicians. That is sort of the blend you have on this album. Some songs are slow and haunting and others rock, while others have jazzy interludes.

If you like King Crimson, It's a Beautiful Day, Blood, Sweat and Tears and think you would enjoy hearing an experimental progressive horn band, then you will enjoy this. There is nothing "untuneful" or spacey or dissonant here, but lots of blending of styles and quick transitions, and the playing is good.

If you like mainstream rock with four mninute tunes that are easy to hum, this won't be your bag.

If you can only buy two CD's a month, maybe put the purchase of this on hold. But if you buy lots of music and can afford to take a chance, do so.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first album.......2004-10-27

I am not nearly as hard on this release as some reviews here. The Flock was looking for direction here and trying new things. Dinosaur Swamps is very progressive and even psychedelic and showed that the Flock was not afraid of stretching into other areas (other bands have done it quite successfully, like Jethro Tull for example). Unfortunately, the Flock could not get it to work for them and it shows in this second and last recording (actually the Flock released a third album a couple of years later minus Jerry Goodman that was terrible). This recording grew on me and after several listens I really began to like it and appreciate the muscianship. Remember, the Flock always had a different sound that must be approached with an open and tuned mind. So if you are a listener of underground rock bands of this period the Flock's recordings should be in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Prime Horn/Violin early 70's progressive rock!.......2004-07-10

This is just about as good as gets at infusing country/blues elements into progressive horn band arrangements of great songs. The playing is superb, and even though I somewhat understand other reviewers dislike for the vocals, they are fitting for the very tight, yet natural feeling rythmic structure of the songs.

The overall energy is incredible. The cover is one of the finest in the industry, and a great representation of art and inspiration from the era that defined "art rock."

Get this if you just can't get enough of the free wheeling horn based progressive rock!

4 out of 5 stars you'll like it, once it sinks in........2004-06-18

At initial playing, "dinosaur swamps" really stinks (excuse the pun).
One might be tempted to think that there is only one tune worth listening: the catchy "big bird" (track 2)... and/or perharps, "mermaid" (track 6), a clever ditty of psychedelic fairground meets chamber ensemble, with the added flair of flamboyant falsetto and harmony.
Persevere further, however, and the magic within this album soon manifests itself.
"Crabfoot" (track 5) cleverly mixes blues "You don't love me" type melody with James Brown "I feel good" soul-vamps.
The track before that ("Lighthouse") is an ambivalent tune;
it leaves me wondering if this idiot-wailing is a touch of genius or simply just that.
Should you ventured beyond tracks 5 and 6,
you will be pleasantly rewarded with "Uranian Sircus" which exemplifies what really makes FLOCK a heavyweight,
flying beyond the heads of tons of more well-known "progressive" bands of that era.
As a previous reviewer noted: FLOCK is not bad; just misunderstood.
Great loss, should you write-off this band's music,
simply because you did not find their music catchy enough, at first hearing.
