Manic Street Preachers have come a long way from the raw Clash-style punky shoutings of their early singles and their later Guns N' Roses infatuation. Both The Holy Bible and Everything Must Go were albums to die for (almost literally: their old guitarist Richey James still hasn't been found since his disappearance a few years back), and this Welsh trio still have the capacity to enrage the most placid of souls. Some find their contradictions far too great to handle, others (this critic included) find them wonderfully inspirational. This Is My Truth is an elegant, epic album full of the huge choruses and direct slogans we've come to know and love. The No. 1 U.K. hit "If You Tolerate This, Your Children Will Be Next" is a deceptively subtle groover with a Motown-style beat--almost Jam's "A Town Called Malice" for the '90s. The windswept "Tsunami" uses sitars to get its message across, while "The Everlasting" is simply beautiful. OK, James Dean Bradfield may have a limited vocal range, but he sure has passion to spare. Four albums after they promised to break up, the Manics are still as impassioned as ever. --Everett True

4 out of 5 stars Scratching My Head a Bit..........2007-03-29

All these glowing reviews and not one mention, 'cept from the Editorial Staff, of their majestic masterpiece, 'The Holy Bible'? Blasphemy, I tell you! Blasphemy!!! =B=

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Recording from a great band, Manic Street Preachers.......2006-03-06

Every song is compelling. The tracks are chock full of good melodies, harmonic richness and intrigue, some good hooks, a bit of politics and a bit of lyrical weirdness, punk attitude, melancholy, love, anger, and overall musical lushness. This is one of the best largely unheralded bands (they come from Wales and came to prominence in the 1990's with some alternative radio airplay); they would appeal to a much wider audience if given the chance. This particular recording is their best one overall, in my opinion, and certainly their most accessible. The earlier albums are even more political, edgy, raw, punky, and gritty but still just
as oddly compelling and melodically and harmonically rich.

2 out of 5 stars Sadly good songs, however not a good album.......2005-05-25

I love the Manic Street Preachers. Always have. I even loved it when they changed direction and went off doing If you Tolerate this. I still like them when they further went on and released their next album know your enemy (Rage Against the Machine Fans maybe???). But both albums lack the direction of Holy Bible or Everything must go. Although singular tracks such as "nobody loves you", "if you tolerate this then your children will be next", "Black Dog", "Ready for Drowning" and "You stole the sun from my heart"; the album slowly plods along playing tracks that sound too similar and too unlike the manics to be memorable. Although it complete's my record colletion its not one that is played often... or at all

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as Everything Must Go, but still good.......2004-12-16

This 1998 follow-up to Everything Must Go isn't as good as it's predecessor, but it still has some great songs. My favorites are The Everlasting, If You Tolerate This (Your Children Will Be Next), Tsunami, and My Little Empire. However, this album gets really ponderous and sluggish towards the end, and songs like Black Dog on My Shoulder and Born a Girl are bordering on rubbish.

4 out of 5 stars But now unforgiven, the everlasting!.......2004-06-17

This is a much more relaxed offer by the Manics and it's really good. It starts perfectly with one of my favourites songs ever "The Everlasting" and the first half of the record is excellent. However it starts to get way too slow in the middle and in the end.

3 out of 5 stars A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26

These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.

I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.

5 out of 5 stars Addicted to MSP.......2001-08-01

I love, love, love this album. Can't get enough of it. After seeing MSP win the band of the year award on MTV in the UK back in February '97, I bought "Everything Must Go." I listened to it for the entire flight home to America. I was addicted. I'm not especially a fan of their lyrics per se. I don't share the leftist leaning, and I find the meaning of many songs too cryptic. As a teenager, I would have delved into their meaning, but as an adult listener, I have a greater appreciation for the sound of the words and music together. Sometimes the music itself is deeper than the words, like the vocal pleading of "Kevin Carter" on "Everything Must Go," and the vibrating guitar in "The Everlasting" on "This is my Truth..." This album clearly demonstrates that MSP in indeed "4 REAL."

3 out of 5 stars Good, but how can you follow Richey?.......1999-05-17

With the legend of Richey James seemingly as strong as ever in the minds of many British music fans, it is always hard for the Manics to retain both left-field credibility and the consumer nouse to shift albums. Where should they go, for a band so highly-acclaimed and award-laden? And without Richey, aren't they a little like the Beatles reforming without John lennon?

This album, whilst being not as exciting as the first three albums (or even "Everything Must Go"), due to the knowledge that Richey's input into the actual musical process is now nil, is still an achievement of fine song writing. But, being the Manics, there are grave misjudgements, such as the plodding "SYMM", and the "honest-it's-not-really-a love song" "You Stole The Sun From My Heart". And whilst everyone may go on about how great Nicky wire is at lyric writing, compoaring him to best mate Richey is like comparing George Harrison's musical ability to that of the aformentioned Mr.Lennon's.

If you want a great album, buy their "The holy Bible" instead. But if you're looking for a worthy, if insincere-sounding effort, plump for this. Selling out has rarely sounded so good.

5 out of 5 stars This Album Plays Your Heart Strings!.......2002-09-01

Hi!
What a Hidden Gem this album is for sure. I had always known Timothy B. Schmit for his other works with the Eagles & Poco. Upon hearing this Solo Album of his, my appreciation of the depths of his talent grew immensely. The lyrics to the songs found on here are so sincere. The song Tell Me The Truth in itself just speaks volumes. I cried the first time I heard this, such a beautiful song. I love the whole complete package brought together in these songs ~~ Timothy's voice, his music and Lyrics all perfectly knit together to make these songs touch you deep inside. I would recommend this album highly, it is a treasured keepsake for sure! I hope to hear more coming from Timothy! Thanks for all of these great songs! Nancy :)

5 out of 5 stars A favorite..........2002-02-19

Timothy B Schmit is a hidden gem. For some reason he is better know for all of the "guest appearances" on other peoples albums than for his own solo work. I grew up with Poco and the Eagles and found his solo work later...wish I would have found it sooner. You'll love this and look for his latest release Feed the Fire (2001) also. He never ceases to amaze!

5 out of 5 stars An Exceptional Mellow CD.......2001-07-27

I would have to say that Timothy B. Schmit is one of the most talented of the members of the Eagles, and it shows on this album. Some of the songs that I think are really good are Something Sad, In Roxy'x Eyes, and For the Children. It would be hard to say which is my favorite song, but it is definately one of my favorite CDS. If you like the ballads of the Eagles you will really like this album.

Here, one of his poems is set to music by leading German bandleader/composer Andreas Schnermann. Vocalist Inga Lühning, in-demand and raved about everywhere in Germany and beyond, is set to become a new icon of modern jazz in Europe. Mary Carewe is a Britisher with impeccable taste in lyrics and a delightful and fascinating voice. This is high-toned cabaret or, as she dubs her intimate program, "serious cabaret". If you like Ute Lemper or Bolcom and Morris, you'll enjoy Mary Çarewe. This is her only solo CD to date, but I can't help but believe that more are in the works for this talented soprano. Her big vocal range is matched by her big voice, which regularly accompanies symphonic orchestras in the UK and Europe in programs of modern music and pop, i.e., would you believe a program of James Bond film title songs with the Hallé orchestra?

After the disappearance of song-writter richy james the Manics have clearly calmed down a bit. This album is more personal and touching than their previous efforts but is still a great rock album and they have certainly proved themselves as one of the best bands in years. The highlights are The Everlasting, If you tolerate this... and My little empire, however all the songs are great. This almost is the perfect album. One of the best i own.

        4 out of 5 stars Gold=1,Soul=0.......1998-12-25

MSP's 5th album (their 2nd without Richey) is an excellent effort, this coming from a band that is yet to fully deal with the disappearance of their closest friend and guitarist Richey Edwards. But I can't help but miss the ferocity and passion of the first three albums. I suppose I couldn't have hoped for them to not change as they got more successful. In the words of Richey, "..everyone is weak.." This particular version of the CD is available by the truckload in every major retail store in the UK (which leads me to wonder why they call it the 'limited edition' version). If you're a manics fan and can't wait till march 1999 for the official US release, go for it. Otherwise, buy TheHolyBible (for a glimpse of their fiery lyrics) and EverythingMustGo(to see how the band changed after Richey left)
