Album Description

The phenomenally popular and influential T.Rex spearheaded the glam-rock movement, a genre owing everything to its quintessential superstar, Marc Bolan. Rivaled only by Bowie, whose own glam period followed in their flamboyant footsteps, Bolan and T.Rex created an incredible vibe and sound whose legacy lives. Driven by primal grooves, effortless hooks, trippy vocals, and deliciously fat guitar riffs, their music was both infused with hippie spirituality and raw sexuality-a rich, ripe, sonic delight both primitive and evolved. While their music defined an era, their irresistible grooves are timeless, and Bolan's later, more experimental tracks, marrying pop genius with creative expansion and proto-punk power, underscore his groundbreaking artistry.

5 out of 5 stars T. Rex's Tanx (1973).......2007-03-30

This album to me represents the last great T. Rex album. This was Marc Bolan's attempt at breaking big in America after having conquered the UK charts. It ranks as my favorite T. Rex album, (actually, my favorite album of all time) with some of Marc's most melodic songs.
After the phenomenal success of "Electric Warrior" and "The Slider," Marc's record company expected big things. What Marc gave them was "Tanx;" an album very different from its predecessors. Unfortunately, the critics and many of the fans didn't like the direction Marc took and the album was deemed a disappointment.

Why is this my favorite album of all time? When I first came upon this album several years ago, after all the bad critical press it got, I was expecting the worst. My thought was, Heck, I loved Electric Warrior and The Slider, how bad could this be? I put the needle down on the turntable and was captivated for the next 40 minutes or so.

"Oh, my darling there are many ways..." The album opens with the guitar boogie and spacey lyrics of "Tenement Lady," a combination of two songs. You'll note on disc 2, it's listed as "Tenement Lady/Darling". Two songs fused together into one great one. Lots of great production work on this one.

"Your mama said, clean out your head, boy..." Next is "Rapids," with lots of guitar slide overdubs. Again, lots of spacey lyrics in a Bolan boogie mind poem.

"I'm just lookin' for a change in my luck.." "Mister Mister" is great light acoustic song with a great sing-a-long at the end. Excellent orchestration by Tony Visconti.

"This is a song that I wrote when I was young..." "Broken Hearted Blues" is, to me, one of the most beautiful songs Marc Bolan ever wrote. Beautiful lyrics, beautiful orchestration, Marc in perfect voice... poetry set to music. Possibly the best song Marc ever put on an album. The only complaint I have it that it was too short.

The rest of the album just flows beautifully. From start to finish, I never skip a song. Plus you get the added bonus of the Marc's singles from '73: "Children of the Revolution," "Jitterbug Love," "Sunken Rags," "Solid Gold Easy Action," "20th Century Boy," and the beautiful "Free Angel".

Disc 2 is made up of alternate takes. It gives you some insight into the workings of the songs a they developed from the rough mix stage to T. Rex classics. These outtakes were once sold separately as "Left Hand Luke: The Alternate Tanx". Here you get the whole package in one.

If you've fallen under the spell of Bolan's words and music, but don't have this album yet, get it now. This album to me is one of the best by the band, and as stated before, one of my favorites of all time.

5 out of 5 stars The great underrated T. Rex album.......2006-07-13

Tanx is a great album. It's not as great as Electric Warrior, but it's up there with The Slider as Marc Bolan's next best. This album sounds like a mix of The Stones' Exile on Main Street with Elton John albums from '71 to '74, with the important ingredient of Bolan's own electric boogie.. It's amazing that Bolan created so much great music in so many different styles. Buy this one after Electric Warrior and The Slider. It's not really represented on any of the Bolan compilations out there. It's mind boggling and sad that '73 was considered the beginning of a downturn in Bolan's career at the time when he created Tanx and "20th Century Boy" (included here)! The bonus disc of alternate takes is fascinating and a good listen in its own right. This release from Rhino Records marks the first reissue of Tanx in the U.S. since the original 1973 vinyl.

Marc Bolan and T REX released "TANX" in 1973.Every T REX fan will
like this album ."Tenement Lady","Mister Mister","Born to Boogie",
"Broken Hearted Blues","Electric Slim and the Factory Hen","Mad Donna",
"Highway Knees" and "Left Hand Luke and the Beggar Boys" are fine
songs. The bonus tracks are outstanding .The "Christmas message"
on this version(the Repertoire version),in my view, acts as an
introduction to "20th Century Boy".I am not sure if that was
intentional or not,but the aforementioned tracks sound awesome
together ."Children of the Revolution" and "Solid Gold Easy Action" as well as "20TH Century Boy" embody the purest essence of hard rock .Buy this album !

5 out of 5 stars the other great T rex album.......2006-01-06

Like many others have said, this is truly underrated. This shows the band in a somewhat transitional phase- embracing more and different sounds. There are some unique arangements some sounding, perhaps, a little bit dated - but Visconti's brush strokes for the most part are right on the money - an album way ahead of its time...

5 out of 5 stars Bolan was a real rock star.......2004-09-30

First of all I want to say I love all you T.rex fans but I want to know why more people just don't seem to get it!! Oh well I'll never know but what a joy it is to have listened to T.rex going on about 30 years now.

Another thing, what is wrong with all the supposedly knowledgable Rock n' Roll critics. Most of them kind of grudgingly acknowledge Electric Warrior as a CLassic Rock masterpiece. In fact that album is the only T.Rex recording that I have seen in stores for the last 20 years or so it seems.

Is Bolan a misunderstood genius? No one doubts his ability to write absolutely perfect Pop songs but I swear he is worth alot more than that, not that writing Pop songs is a small feat but I feel he is deserving of much higher praise than he actually gets.

So I say put him up there with DYlan, Lennon, Bowie ( who was inspired by Bolan anyway) LEd Zepplin or whomever you think is great and i beleive he fits.

In fact I read a quote recently where one smart writer said that he felt Marc Bolans "Artful Artlessness" was a more profound contribution to Pop music than all the Sad Eyed Singer sonwriters of the 70's. Long before the Talking Heads proclaimed to the world that it was time to "Stop Making Sense" BOlan was rocking his sublimely ridiculous lyrics to all those enlightened enough to understand what it was all about! Rock on in Heaven Marc!!!

5 out of 5 stars Boogie Mind Poem.......2004-01-18

Firstly, I feel obligated to clear up the "Marc Bolan is not Glam" argument (yes, this will tie in with the review). Such is true... but Glam is Marc Bolan. Glam rock, the often over-simplified genre, yet decidedly the pop music equivalent to the Symboliste movement (Bolan is pop music's answer to Mallarme, similar in motive and uniqueness) was created to describe T-Rex, as T-Rex was the first band the term was applied to. Therefore, other "Glam" acts (Bowie, Reed, Cockney Rebel, Jobriath, Mott the Hoople, The Sparks, etc...) are derivative, willingly or not, while T-Rex is the essence and definition of Glam (though I should point that though Reed was a Glam rock derivative, he was also one of its prime forefathers, and likewise Glam didn't just pop out of nowhere).

However, Tanx is, for better or worse, a parody of Glam rock... Dizzam, its evident at the first sight of the cover... a bloated Bolan wrapped in an unusually large feather boa with enough black eye-liner to pass as Theda Bara if you squint your eyes. Huge hair too. It was also his last Glam album (Zinc Alloy may have been dubbed Glam, but he had officially removed himself from the scene by its release, if only to better infiltrate the anti-fluff blue-jean clad American market). Excess may have gotten too him... whatever... fresh off the chain of commercial masterpieces (T-Rex, Electric Warrior, Slider) the album oozes with seemingly tongue-in-cheek indulgence and over-the-top production... but done so beautifully that... *swoon*

Tanx is probably the most debated album among Bolan fans, simply because it was a "departure" from his earlier work, prely due to the excessive production, soul influences, and, at times, less than literate lyrics (critics have always accused Bolan's lyrics of being nonsensical, shallow, or, at best, "pure sex", but Tanx was his first output that may have, in a couple cases, proved them right... concerning everything before, critics were just stupid and closed-minded...ie: if you're expecting confessional singer-songwriter crap or some political mantra, Bolan isn't the place to look). Bolan's lyrics always been an exquisit collage of influences and ideas, muddled inside of his imagination and then "taught", as Rimbaud would say, to his consciousness, thus being created and existing as an emotion/thought rather than evoking an emotion/thought... the artist as the art, the art as the artist. However, Tanx quite cheekily simplifies a couple (and only a couple) songs to such trivialities as "pure sex". But it's done so masterfully!

Likewise, Tanx is a strangely unsettling album... but in the good way. However intentionally shallow-some parts are, and how cheeky the rest of it is, its strangely forlorn. In fact, almost every song seems like a cryptic message... Tenement Lady, a groover that falls into half-time midway thru in an almost faux-earnest testament to stardom ("Oh my darling there are many ways to view you/ To me you're almost like a hammer and a screw...") starts with astonishing intensity, only to drop to a flanged lull, ending the song mid-thought in a chorus of "Oh yeah... ohhhhhh yeah". Likewise, Broken Hearted Blues is a disturbingly unemotional song, despite the subject matter being the decay of the carnival of youth, but treated almost indifferently (as opposed to Bolan's previous youth-topics being passionately youth-worshipping) until the very end, "get good now and face your face to the wind", which seems almost a resignation, followed by the last line being a repeat of the first, but with his voice cracking into almost a sob as it trails off. The theme continues in songs like Electric Slim and Highway Knees, but acheives crowning glory in the gut-wrenching Left Hand Luke... nasal tones in his voice are cranked up to ungodly levels and he almost bellows the lyrics, twisted with bizarre characters, all of whom seem desperate and about to crash... a far cry from the charming fondness of previous characters such as Debora, the Child Star, or Buick MacKane. The just starts... no intro, no warning, and ends with what sounds somewhere between a bomb dropping and a senile old man on his death bed. Quite brilliant, really.

So there you have it... a five star album. Not Bolan's most beautiful work, but maybe his most timeless, and certainly his most haunting. He never sounded like this before and he never sounded like this again. The album is unsettling... it will never escape you and you'll have an insatiable urge to listen to it again and again, but somehow you'll never quite "get it." And I think he intended it that way. It introduced the soul elements that would come to define his music, but with plenty of the boogie riffs that saturated the three albums before it. However, if you're a first time Bolan listener, I suggest checking out "T-Rex" (his best album/the first T-Rex album) or "Bolan Boogie" (a compilation ranging from a few Tyrannosaurus Rex songs up to Electric Warrior) instead... or even "Electric Warrior", the first album written with a deliberate Glam consciousness and defined Bolan's swank and ethereal boogie. I might also recommend "The Beginning of Doves" (pre-Tyrannosaurus songs, some solo, some John's Children, I think one or two as Toby Tyler....amazing songs, best lyrics ever) and "Billy Super Duper" (if you can find it), which supposedly would have been his last album (or the skeleton of it, anyway). Love you, Marc!

5 out of 5 stars A Bold and Beautiful Bolan Album.......2007-04-17

Like everyone else reviewing this album I was expecting something much less than 'Electric Warrior' or 'The Slider'. Upon the first listen I realized the writing was going in a different direction. New directions can seem confusing at first. After a few listens, songs like Broken Hearted Blues, The Street and Babe Show, Country Honey, Highway Knees come alive. The freshness of the sound, going on 34 years old, is amazing. No pop sounded like this then or ever again. This Bolan outing is BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL.
Considering all the singles he released at the time of this album that did not initally find a spot on 'TANX', I'm sure this was a problem for fans and critics. Thank goodness for today's extended plays.
Give 'TANX' a few listens. It is highly melodic and as fresh as a newly baked loaf of bread.

    5 out of 5 stars Due Credit.......2007-02-03

I discovered Marc Bolan and his band T. Rex about six months ago when I purchased "Electric Warrior." It's one of the best CD's I've ever heard, so great that two days later I bought "Slider" which is unbelievable. That same day I ordered Tanx at Barnes and Noble.

When I picked it up a week and a half later I had it opened before I was out of the store and had it playing before the car was started. Now the first two are outstanding CD's but Tanx is by far my favorite out of the three. The music is outstanding. "Broken-Hearted Blues," "Tenement Lady," and "Left Hand Luke and the Beggar Boys" are my top three favorites, but I love every track on this CD. It's in a constant rotation in my car. My least favorite track on the CD is the hit "Born to Boogie" and I would still give "Born to Boogie" a 5 star rating.

On the bonus tracks you get "Children of the Revolution" (if you have ever watched Moulan Rouge you'll remember it) and 20th Century Boy (which was never released on CD except for singles and greatest hit compilations.

Marc Bolan was a musical genius that in my opinion was ahead of his time, and doesn't get the credit he deserves for his music.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars - Unfairly bashed by the critics.......2005-01-18

Tanx (1973.) Marc Bolan's eighth album.

By 1972, glam rocker Marc Bolan and his glam rock outfit T. Rex had conquered the United Kingdom, due in no small part to his masterpiece albums Electric Warrior and The Slider. The albums were nothing short of excellence, and while Bolan achieve massive success in his native nation, the albums did almost nothing in America, outside of the hit single Bang A Gong (Get It On), from the former album. Bolan sought to expand his audience into the United States with Tanx, his 1973 release. Unfortunately, the album was a dismal commercial failure, and critics on both sides of the Atlantic wrote Bolan off as a has-been. Read on for my review, and see if the critics were right in their bashing words.

No album screams out "critics are morons" like Tanx. This is a GREAT album that really documents Bolan's maturing musical sound. There are plenty of rockers and slower tracks alike, along with some of the classic glitter/glam-style rock that made Bolan famous. I won't deny that this album doesn't top Electric Warrior or The Slider, but I think it's a worthy contender that certainly ranks up there in my book. It's somewhat ironic, though, that the album he released in an effort to expand his audience actually reduced it. Many of music's greatest recordings are commercial failures - and Bolan's Tanx stands as one of the strongest examples of that. If you liked Bolan's two albums that came before this, you're likely to enjoy this one too. Just don't come in listening expecting a carbon copy of the previous two works.

Bolan's catalogue is, for the most part, out of print in America. Fortunately, a Russian import twofer series has made his albums easier to get and more affordable. At long last, you can get his albums easier than you could before. The twofers are a better value and a better choice than the two-disc deluxe editions.

Why was Tanx a commercial failure? I guess we'll never know. Critics never gave this album a chance, and that's a real shame, since it's some of Bolan's best work. If you're a fan of his, there's no reason not to have this one added to your collection.

2 out of 5 stars I know you're going to hate this review but..........2004-09-01

I went through the biggest Marc Bolan obsession ever. I bought his albums, videos, and listened to his early stuff to the point where my girl friend had to lay down a few ground rules about how much I could listen to Slider or E.Warrior. Anyway, when I heard 20th Century Boy I thought this album was the next thing for me. Anyway, everyone notes that this album is his big departure and boy is it ever. Gone are the rocking boogies, and kinky vocals. In place of it is a bunch of slower, moodier songs that I couldn't get into at all. Needless to say this album was a huge disapointment for me. I would say this to you, realize that most people reviewing albums like this are complete die hards and to them it's going to be 5 stars. I would also say, that before you pick this one up give it a listen as it is definitely a different sound and approach than his earlier albums. Artists change and Marc Bolan was definitely one to evolve and challenge his audience. Unfortunately he grew beyond my hopes and expectations. If you're new to Bolan get Electric Warrior and Slider the deluxe editions. You'll have so much fun listening to that stuff. If you go for this one then I hope you like it more than I did.

5 out of 5 stars THE T.REX EXPLOSION AT ITS PEAK!!!.......2004-01-20

It is hard for any T.Rex/Bowie fan to ignore the fact that the two inspired each other...for they were both stemmed from the magical hands of the producer Tony Visconti. "Tanx" not only combined the elements of the previous T.Rex albums ("T.Rex", "Electric Warrior", & "Slider") but it went a step beyond! It combined the mystical and electronical together, making for the T.Rex climax for all fans.

"Tanx" is perhaps the most seductive of the T.Rex collection. Not since the self-titled album had the band produced such dreamy and breath taking surrealism. "Broken Hearted Blues" is like everyone's teenage lust preserved in a jar. Though many Tyrannosaurus Rex fans felt that the abbreviation to T.Rex was the ending to the Marc Bolan legacy, "Tanx" plays like a fish coming to the surface of the water for a breath of fresh air and remains the same during each play! Had Marc Bolan contained the energy displayed during this album -- Led Zeppelin would have appeared in the cut-out bins!

4 out of 5 stars Bolan Expands the T.Rex Sound.......2004-11-21

Marc Bolan was never a big star in the U.S. (he had only one top 40 hit with "Bang a Gong" the year before), but he was riding a huge wave of popularity in the U.K. when this album was released in 1973. Over the previous two years he had four No. 1's in the U.K. and "Children of the Revolution," "Solid Gold Easy Action" and "20th Century Boy" (all three included here as bonus tracks) were No. 2, 2 and 3 respectively in the U.K.

But Bolan knew his teen fan base was dissipating and he looked to broaden the T.Rex sound on TANX. [It went No. 4 in the U.K., but only No. 102 in the U.S.] There was still the familiar T.Rex boogie on songs like "Mad Donna" and "Born to Boogie," but there were elements of soul and gospel on songs like "Left Hand Luke & the Beggar Boys" with its female backing singers and acoustic piano. Bolan also added mellotron to the opening track, "Tenement Lady."

While Bolan would not chart another top 10 single in the U.K. before his untimely in 1977 and each successive album charted lower than the previous one, TANX is a solid album from start to finish and holds up well along side ELECTRIC WARRIOR and THE SLIDER. Altogether they form a trilogy of the best of T.Rex's work. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars No Sign of Decline.......2004-07-30

This was Bolans 4th great record in a row. Echoing what alot of others have already said, Tanx was attacked by the critics as being formulaic, and that was one of the nice things they had to say about it. I know all this because I was about 15 years old at the time and already a big T.Rex fan. My first exposure to T.Rex was on American Bandstand. They played Telegram Sam one saturday and I rushed out to buy Slider and have been a fan ever since that magic moment on A.B. I guess you can compare this to David Bowie's(He played Sax on this recording)album "Young Americans" though Tanx I feel is much more succesful at least artistically than "Young Americans". TANX is pure T.Rex even though there are some new elements to the sound here. There is a subtle soul influence but thankfully this is still really a Rock album. That was a common mistake for Rock artists during this period to want to do a soul album. The second half of Tenement Lady sounds a bit like John Lennon's Chord Changes. The lyrics are wonderfully non-sensical years before David BYrne and the Talking Heads would proclaim "Stop Making Sense". The arrangements are flawless and the strings are beautiful. I won't say that TANX is better than SLider or Electric Warrior, but it is on the same level and just different enough for some to prefer it to his previous masterworks. So if you love great Rock Music don't even think twice on this one because it is fantastic.

        5 out of 5 stars in retrospect...great!.......2003-10-28

As a kid, when I bought this album at its being issued, I hated Tanx. It was about the greatest disappointment I could think of: sound seemed plastic, no grand arrangements like in the single hits, strange unfinished songs, a mess of arrangements and half digested ideas it seemed to me. Now, much much wiser and riper I've returned to T. Rex only to find that Trax might very well be close to a masterpiece. This must have been what Bolan thought himself, but hardly anyone at the time seemed too willing to acknowledge the fact that Bolan was once again much more than just a silly teenybopper. We, the teens to be bopped, hadn't understood and left him behind, mainly because of Tanx. Yet, do hope that many of those renegates will return to this record (and all other Bolan records, even the worst), and discover the imaginative playing around with cliche's, the smart arrangements, the sweeping emotions involved, the larger than life guitar playing Bolan showed himself capable of, the witty and sometimes sarcastic lyrics. And of course, Bolan's talent to use only two or three chords, and a small set of song lines to say it all. The hit singles of the period, though produced like Supremes songs, lag quite behind the original Tanx record. Yet, at the time, I thought it to be exactly the reverse...In a way, I've been spared a sense of guilt: Bolan did not kill himself, nor was he driving the god damned car that slammed into the tree. It was a stupid accident, not the result of our lack of recognition..

        4 out of 5 stars Yes, I was misled...........2003-02-06

I really *was* misled, and I'm loathe to forgive the hordes of fans and journalists responsible for this misinformation. Contrary to what "they" kept insisting, Tanx is T-Rex's best album, not the Slider or Electric Warrior. For me there's no contest here. This is Bolan's masterpiece. Sure, the other two are great, and deserve their praise, but Tanx is an altogether different story. Here's why:

One listen reveals Bolan's songwriting has become more sophisticated, versatile, and accomplished. What's key here is he hasn't lost his ability to rock with more testosterone-based swagger than just about anyone with a guitar and a hairy chest. But Tanx benefits from stronger pop sensibilities, and that means HOOKS galore and more mature songwriting. Take the breezy, irresistibly melodic Mister Mister, with its Brian Wilson-esque chords in the verses, or Broken Hearted Blues - one of Bolan's most heartfelt songs - a mesmerizing, beautiful pop ballad with a chord progression that builds and rises perfectly, supported by lush acoustic guitars and tastefully-applied strings.

Shock Rock pounds and stomps out of the gate, complete with trashy "oh baby" lyrics in the verse, then shifts to the chorus with an irresistible hook that sticks to you like duct-tape. "Highway Knees" is another spine-tingling, beautiful, slow song. Crammed with hooks, a bouncy beat, and a rich string arrangement, it ends with an atmospheric loop of mellotron and strings, sounding absolutely ahead of its time. The dizzying, weak-in-the-knees Electric Slim and the Factory Hen has similar attributes, which makes for a highly accomplished, yet still groovy and accessible pop mini-symphony.

Part of what makes Tanx stand out is its increased attention to detail, with fuller and more varied sound than on previous records. Bolan and Visconti throw in lots of other instruments and effects, giving the songs color and texture, and infusing the hooks with subtle twists and turns, making the material stand out more than if they had stuck with the basic guitar-bass-drums treatment.

Tanx shows an appealing balance between well-crafted pop and balls-out rockers, making each respective style stand out better on its own. That all these styles sit comfortably together is a testament to Bolan's genius. So why the Slider and Electric Warrior continue to hog the spotlight is mystifying. Tanx deserves the same attention.

5 out of 5 stars WARNING: TIME-TRAVEL MAY OCCUR WHILE LISTENING.......2002-05-21

Brief and to the point: If you want to know what a hazy summer in the mid-70's felt/sounded/tasted/looked/ like, buy this record . . . Cheers dears. By the way, the soul elements are what makes this record so good. Take that, you uptight cats!

5 out of 5 stars It didn't end with The Slider!.......1999-12-08

Why did everyone tell me The Slider was the last of the great T.Rex albums? Obvious they didn't hear Tanx. As soon as "Tenement Lady" begins, you know exactly what you're in for, and you can't wait for it to take hold. Tony Visconti's production is prime, Marc Bolan had some beautiful songs ready to break out, and the singles and B-sides provided on the reissue are nothing less than amazing.

Left Hand Luke, the demos and unfinished versions of Tanx, proved to be an even greater investment in musical enjoyment. I'm pretty sure that anyone who enjoyed The Slider, but thought they didn't enjoy Tanx, would think twice after hearing Left Hand Luke.

"Broken Hearted Blues" is possibly the most beautiful song Marc Bolan ever recorded, simple and moving (especially with Visconti's strings added.) "Country Honey" and "Tenement Lady" are the definition of groovy. Sore necks are to be had listening to these tracks. "Children of the Revolution" and "20th Century Boy" are timeless, while Marc's X-mas Message is priceless.

I'd consider Tanx to be on par with Electric Warrior and The Slider. Could be a great introduction to T.Rex.
