Steve Marriott was only 18 when the debut album was issued and still only 23 when he formed Humble Pie. It's a tragedy that the Small Faces never received the recognition they deserved when Steve and Ronnie were still around. (But, is that a reference to them in Eight Miles High?)

Brilliant sixties rock group.......2005-02-16

The Small Faces were one of the most distinctive groups of the sixties and have continued to be a major influence on rock music down the years. The founder members were Steve Marriott, Ronnie Lane, Kenny Jones and Jimmy Winston. Jimmy didn't last long and was replaced by Ian McLagan after their debut single, Whatcha gonna do about it, made the UK top twenty. With the new line-up, the Small Faces had several major UK hits.

Sha la la la lee, Hey girl, All or nothing and My mind's eye were all huge UK hits, with All or nothing going all the way to number one. After a minor hit with I can't help it, they left Decca and signed for the Immediate label.

They just missed the UK top ten with Here come the nice. Itchycoo Park made the UK top three and the American top five (it was their only American hit). Tin Soldier made the UK top ten. Lazy Sunday, a brilliant summer song, was a UK number two hit. The universal made the UK top twenty in 1968, after which the group disbanded. Afterglow of your love became a minor UK hit in 1969. Re-issues of Itchycoo Park (a top ten hit in 1975) and Lazy Sunday (a minor hit in 1976) complete their chart history, unless there are further successful re-issues.

After the group disbanded, Steve Marriot, the lad singer, formed Humble Pie (best known for their UK top five hit, Natural born boogie) while the other three formed the Faces with another musician, Ronnie Wood, and a new lead singer, Rod Stewart.

The music of Humble Pie and the Faces is outside the scope of this compilation, which provides a comprehensive study of the Small Faces' music from both Decca and Immediate labels, including all their UK hits and many great album tracks. Note that most hits compilations tend to have either the Decca tracks or the Immediate tracks. If you buy this, you may never need another Small Faces collection, although even this one does not contain everything.

Best sound & best comp.......2005-02-02

This 2003 compilation (covering both the Decca and Immediate eras)has the best mastering of any SF title in print. The 1999 "Darlings" set has plenty of nice rareties not included here, but the sound of this set beats that one hands down. The entire debut album is on the first disc - and unlike the Deram remaster from '97 - the material explodes from your speakers like the early Who at their best. The Decca material is raw, soulful, maximimum r & b/rock and roll, with hints of the introspection and psychedelia to come. The Immediate material is simply breathtaking in its scope and variety.And those(Immediate) tracks on disc two are - unlike Fuel 2000's thin sounding transfers - full-bodied, with plenty of beautifully defined bass and drums from one of the most subtle rhythm sections in rock, Ronnie Lane and Kenny Jones. I suggest to any SF newbie, buy this collection and listen close, dance, laugh, cry - then pick up the rest of this classic band's catalog, for they were as great in their day (1965 - 69) as Faces (SF minus Steve Marriott, replaced by Ron Wood and Rod Stewart) would be in theirs (1969 - 75). Together, two of the very best rock and roll bands during a very critical and constantly evolving decade.

"Around The Plynth" (later to become a slide guitar workout for Ron Wood in his live shows and sometimes incorporating "Gasoline Alley"), "Flying," and "Three Button Hand Me Down" are the strongest tracks here. This is the sound of a band seeking out a new identity...Rod Stewart had nothing in common with original singer Steve Marriott beyond the ability to let loose with a raspy howl, and the Keef-riffing of Ron Wood brought in a heavier hand than the one that guided songs like "Itchykoo Park." The next album ("Long Player"), as sloppy as it was, got a little closer to the band that would ultimately record their masterpiece "A Nod Is As Good As A Wink." This album really is a First Step...not a bad one, just a 3-star one.

I had real high hopes for this band when I was a 15 year old in 1970.Being a devoted Small Faces and Jeff Beck Group fan I truly believed the musical marriage of McLagen,Lane and Jones with Mr. Stewart and Mr. Wood would result in a "supergroup" that was actually both super and a group.I guess what I ended up with was more like a minor league Stones without all the drama and baggage those guys were totin' around at the time. But it's okay because, just as attending a minor league baseball game can be a more intimate and enjoyable experience than watching the big leagues sometimes,The Faces are just out to entertain you here.No serious messages(not even the Meher Baba inspired "Stone" should be taken too seriously).They're just four very talented journeyman musicians and one soon -to- be- superstar peacock havin' some laughs and lager. Listening to the CD these days makes me very nostalgic for those innocent first days of this band ,and truth be told, nostalgia probably made me add a star to the rating. But I can wholeheartedly recommend the following cuts on the record ;"Wicked Messenger","Three Button Hand Me Down" "The Monkey and the Pineapple"(as close to Booker T. as any limey band ever got), and the aforementioned Ronnie Lane ditty "Stone".The rest of the album is merely good early seventies British rock which means it is better than 90% of the stuff coming off of of that island these days...so Faces fans, Stewart fans(this is when he was good ya'll)...buy this record and take that first step with me.

The Sound That Launched the 70's.......2000-02-10

When Rod Stewart joined the Small Faces on this album, who would have guessed what was to come. This is the mixed birth of Honky Tonk, Blues, early Funk and a smidgen of Folk music. There are heavy riffs, honky tonk piano's and a gravely blues voice that would become as big a part of rock music as any has so far.

Anyone who loves to shimmy and shake across the floor to later Rod Stewart " Hot Legs" or Ronnie Wood and the Stones needs to score this CD and see where it originated. A must have.

Faces not Small Faces!.......1999-05-01

This album was the first by the Faces with Rod Stewart & Ronnie Wood having replaced Steve Marriott who had left to form Humble Pie with Peter Frampton. This is very much the band feeling their way and nicking quite a few riffs here and there (Some Kind Of Wonderful). Ironically when Steve Marriott left the remaining Small Faces said the last thing they wanted was another front man who would be the main focus for the band. And who did they get? Rod Stewart of all people! An Album for devoted fans only - all Faces albums should have been Live and Ronnie Lane should have looked longer for a new vocalist before settling for Stewart.

Hey guys,

Bassist Rick Wills, who is filling in here (and on the 78 in the Shade LP) for an absent Ronnie Lane (who started the reunion but left before the record was made) didn't play in Humble Pie. Greg Ridley was the bassist for Humble Pie. Wills played on one Roxy Music LP in the mid-1970s and would eventually join Foreigner after these two Small Faces reunion LPs.

Do get the Small Faces' "Small Faces," "There Are But Four Small Faces" and "Odgen's Nut Gone Flake" CD, and then move on to Humble Pie's "Performance: Rockin' the Filmore," "Rock On" and the new "Definitive Collection," as well as Ronnie Lane's "Anymore for Anymore" CD, Ronnie Lane's and Pete Townshend's "Rough Mix" CD and all four of the Faces albums ("First Step," "Long Player," "A Nod's As Good As Wink ... To A Blind Horse" and "Ooh La La." You'll be fine after that ....

70s reunion album isn't Ogden's - but it's worth a listen.......2005-06-16

While this is not a stellar effort by the Small Faces, particularly when stacking it up against their earlier work, there are a few great tracks (especially if you like Steve Marriott's trademark vocals): "Find it", a rock-and-soul number with an infectious riff, great drums, Marriott's classic soul-shout, all topped off by a blistering guitar solo, "Never Too Late", with tasty gospel backing a la Blackberries, and "Lookin' for a Love", another rock-soul number that shows Marriott really wanted to be an R-n-B singer (that's the real R-n-B BTW).

If you're new to The Small Faces, forget Playmates and get their first Decca album (simply titled 'Small Faces' - not to be confused with their first Immediate album by the same name) then get Ogden's Nut Gone Flake. Each album showcases the Small Faces at their best, the Decca years (R-n-B + power-pop) and the Immediate years (psychedelia). Their original 60s work was their best, complemented by Ronnie Lane's songwriting.

This album was pretty much a money thing with none of the band members feeling too great about it if one trusts Ian McLagan's account in his book 'All The Rage'. Humble Pie's Rick Wills fills in for Ronnie Lane - an impossible act to follow. The cover alone makes it a bargain bin special. But anyone who has the 60s catalogue and still hungers for more of Marriott's terrific vocals will want to pick up Playmates. Even in reduced circumstances the man could sing like no one else and - let's face it - he was the Small Faces.

Why Did They Bother?.......2005-04-21

In the early Sixties, the Small Faces were a mod band in the same vein as the Who. They would eventually release such classic albums as THERE ARE BUT FOUR SMALL FACES and OGDEN'S NUT GONE FLAKE. By 1969, the original band dissolved.

On paper, this 1977 reunion had promise. With Rod Stewart going solo and Ron Wood joining the Stones, the Faces were left with Ian McLagan (organ) and Kenney Jones (drums). With the reissue of two Small Faces' classics in 1976 just having gone Top 40 in the UK ("Itchycoo Park," #9 and "Lazy Sunday," #39), Steve Marriott joined McLagan and Jones along with former Humble Pie bassist Rick Wills.

The album opens with the Marriott-penned "High and Happy" and certainly invokes the old Small Faces' sound, but it is weakened by throwaway lyrics: "Been on the road for about ten long years/I've seen spring in Des Moines, I've seen laughter and tears/But I'm still around to say to you today/I'm high, I'm happy and I hope to stay that way." Another Marriott tune, "Saylarvee," attempts to capture the bloozy sound of the Stewart-era Faces and is one of the album's more engaging tracks. The lone cover, a remake of the Bobby Womack hit "Lookin' for a Love," isn't bad, but my expectations for this album were much higher. Overall, this album has little to recommend it. While Marriott may have been the front man of the original band, Ronnie Lane was its heart and soul. Without him, this effort is average at best. I purchased this on vinyl when it was first released, and there's a reason it had since gone out of print. It's just not that good. For completists only.

Debut Small Faces: Raw Power '65 Style.......2007-03-27

This 1996 reissue of the Small Faces' debut (issued April 1966) is a rush of mod rock 'n' soul, and along with "From The Beginning" captures the group's Decca period (1965 - 67), when they were still in their teens and bursting with furious energy. By '67 the group would sign with Andrew Oldham's Immediate label. With Immediate the group was allowed more time off the road, and truly mastered the studio(thanks to Glyn Johns, Eddie Kramer, George Chkiantz, i.e. the best engineers in the business) - those later records are carefully, artfully made. This debut is explosive, however, and recalls a cross between the first Who album, though Marriott is a more accomplished (and soulful) vocalist than the young Daltrey, and (Ron Wood's first group) The Birds (whose lead vocalist had a punkier style) and captures what the band might have sounded like live.
I suggest the reader click on the new (2007) '40th anniversary' edition of this album, for it includes 4 superb non lp singles (including 'I've Got Mine', 'What's A Matter Baby', 'Grow Your Own', and 'Almost Grown') and the remastering of the bonus alternate takes (designated 'French ep versions' in 1996) is far better than on this earlier cd. So I'll try to get a review of the new edition completed, for the extensive booklet is also comprehensive and visually wonderful as well - a 5 star effort.

Required Listening.......2006-10-20

If you are a fan of mid-sixties UK rock, then this album is manadatory for your collection. The UK sound was at its peak around the time this came out, just prior to the psychedelic sound (another genre the Small Faces would excel at) and the music is hard and fresh and exciting--R&B played by English boys with plenty of grit. The Small Faces were the real deal when it came to Mod music: Steve Marriott was the ultimate UK Soul Shouter and the Small Faces were the world's best dressed garage band. Due to rip-off management and other factors, they never made it in the US but in Europe they were huge and for good reason. They released 14 singles. Robert Plant got his inspiration for Whole Lotta Love from watching Marriott sing You Need Loving. There are basically two phases of the Small Faces, the Decca Mod phase (this album) and the Immediate Psych phase (Ogden's Nut Gone). Both albums stand the test of time and repeated plays. If only all bands could release a first album this good.

The 1966 debut of the British rock group, The Small Faces, is essential British Invasion music with lots of bluesy vocals, guitar feedback, and energetic drumming. The Small Faces get a lot of comparison to The Who (ironic because Small Faces drummer, Kenny Jones, would become The Who's drummer after Keith Moon died), but they are very different bands and the Small Faces were not as popular and haven't received the credit they deserve. Just listening to this album, especially the soulful vocals of guitarist Steve Marriott (a sound he already had on the debut!), shows where a lot of Robert Plant's influence came from. Honestly, at times, the likeness between Marriott and Plant is uncanny (it's only magnified when Marriott sings "You need coolin', baby I'm not foolin', I'm gonna send you back to schoolin'..." (from "You Need Lovin'") - words obviously adopted for Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love"). The rest of the band is equally exciting whether it's the inspired drumming of Kenny Jones, the bass of Ronnie Lane, or the organ of Ian McLagan, they all work together here. The album (originally 12 tracks) has been remastered and also expanded to 17 tracks (5 tracks from a French EP) that don't match up to the recording quality of the rest of the album, but are nonetheless energetic, alternate versions of selected songs on the album. The Small Faces are probably best known for their hit "Itchycoo Park", a song released two years after the debut. That song was released after the Small Faces began to experiment with their sound and studio space, but it's also less raw than what you will hear on this album (both periods of their music are definitely worth while though). In 1969, Marriott would leave to form Humble Pie (with Peter Frampton) and the Small Faces would hire Rod Stewart and Ron Wood, then becoming "The Faces". That incarnation is also noteworthy for obvious reasons, but this debut of the Small Faces is essential because of the influence it provided to several other British, as well as American bands.

Small Faces Start With Bang.......2001-01-28

The Small Faces first time out proves they were a hard R&B in the ranks of The Who. However when it comes down to the instruments they don't have that sonic explosion The Who had but they make it up with plenty of heart and somthing that the Who did not have in 65, a great singer (Daltrey would get better though). Steve Marriott's voice is fantastic, sort of a male Janis Joplin. Its hard to believe that in less than a year they would become a Pop group. There is some filler here but most of the tracks hold up well like Whatch Ya Gonna Do About It, Sorry She's Mine and Sha La La Lee. A very good Debut.

Fascinating early Faces.......2006-08-20

From The Beginning was released in 1967 as a spoiler by Decca, the Small Faces' old label, to coincide with the release of their new album on the Immediate label entitled Small Faces (confusingly, the only album they made for Decca was also self-titled). The Small Faces did not especially appreciate the gesture, and made a point of specifically discouraging people from buying From The Beginning in the advertising for their new album.

From The Beginning contained all the hits they had had with Decca (What'cha Gonna Do About It, Sha-La-La-La-Lee, Hey Girl, All Or Nothing and My Mind's Eye), available on any number of compilations, alongside a number of previously unreleased recordings. These and are now the chief attraction of this CD re-issue.

The Small Faces had one line-up change while they were with Decca, when in October 1965 Jimmy Winston left and was replaced on keyboards by Ian McLagan. Although the Decca album Small Faces depicted Ian McLagan on the cover when it was released in May 1966, Jimmy Winston played on five or six of the tracks, recorded before his departure, and largely comprising their stage act of the time.

Unfortunately, it seems not to be known when these outtakes were recorded but the stage favourite Baby, Don't You Do It (a Marvin Gaye cover) has Jimmy Winston on lead vocals and guitar so some others may well have been recorded before October 1965, possibly the bizarre but interesting version of Runaway and the excellent takes on Don Covay's Take This Hurt Off Me and the Miracles' You've Really Got A Hold On Me. Both of these demonstrate what a fine band they were, and what a great vocalist Steve Marriott was. Indeed one wonders why space could not be found for some of these recordings on their first album. After Ian McLagan joined, they began to put Booker T-style instrumentals on their B-sides, so the cover of Plum Nellie here probably features him rather than Jimmy Winston on keyboards.

The album also included earlier versions of songs they re-recorded for Immediate, including My Way Of Giving, which they had handed over to Chris Farlowe for a single, and (Tell Me) Have You Ever Seen Her, which they had similarly given to Apostolic Intervention.

For the CD five bonus tracks have been added. Besides some unreleased alternative takes and a BBC session recording are two variant versions of singles which apparently appeared on French EPs: My Mind's Eye (which sounds slightly speeded up) and Hey Girl.

This album is a fascinating insight into the workings of the band during their Decca days with a number of gems not found elsewhere.

I would completely disagree with the reviewer who stated that psychedelic music was the Small Faces strength, in my humble just the opposite is true and the further they went into psychedelic whimsy the more annoying they became. The Small Faces were at their best as a noisy somewhat experimental mod soul band. And this c.d. showcases this side to great effect. Do not hesitate to buy. If you like the Who and the Pretty Things more aggressive stuff this rates right up there with those sides.

A lost classic . . . ........2004-02-14

Wow - one of the best records I've heard in my life. If you like early Who, Kinks or Creation records you're gonna love this. Totally different from their later (and more pop oriented) Immediate recordings, this record is hard mod rock at its best, all in glorious mono. The bonus tracks offer even tougher versions of Hey Girl, My Mind's Eye and Take This Hurt Off Me. Runaway is worth the price of admission alone and the cover of You've Really Got A Hold On Me is simply awesome. How this isn't as known as The Stone's Aftermath and the Who's My Generation is totally beyond me. Do yourself a favor and grab this now!

bad selection.......2001-05-19

The Small Face was a band who's strengh mainly came from their psychedelic side. This compilation album, however, mainly features their rock 'n roll material. Only their plain rock 'n roll is too ordinary, even noisy and obnoxious at times. Still there are a couple of truly psychedelic songs. The dreamy "(Tell Me) Have You Ever Seen Me," and more rough stuff like "Plum Nellie" and "My minds Eye." These tracks instantly brings back the magic and mystery which are far better represented on their albums "There are but four Small Faces" and especially "Odgen's Nut Gone Flake."

Alltogether, in my humble opinion, "From the Beginning" has too little of their spicy stuff to make it a good compilation.

Pop music perfection. Phenomenal songs bursting with wit, soul, charm, imagination and joy. If Ogden's Nut Gone Flake is the Small Faces' Sgt Pepper, then the first Immediate album is their Revolver. The bonus tracks include some of the greatest singles of the 20th century. I can't recommend this collection highly enough.

This 2-cd version has both the mono and stereo mixes, obviously meant for obsessive completists. The Small Faces released so little material that most of their fans become obsessive completists anyway.

This is the definitive edition.......2004-04-05

Although the contents of the Small Faces' Immediate debut (after 2 albums from Decca) may be found elsewhere, such as the superb compilation "Darlings of Wapping Wharf Launderette," the sequencing and overall concept of this package makes it superior for anyone who doesn't have this material already. The remastering is solid, both on stereo and mono versions, and the progress the group made from the explosive Decca sides, which date from mid-1965 through 1966, to the inventive, meticulously constructed (with help from Glyn Johns)music released in May 1967 is astonishing.The tonal coloring and range of emotional content (from the soulful Marriott-led tracks to the whimsical to the melancholy, searching Ronnie Lane classic "Show Me the Way"). In addition to mono and stereo versions of the "Small Faces" album there is another, bonus collection of 1967 singles and outtakes that make up a slightly shorter but just as powerful
"lost" album that makes a great listen on its own (beginning with tracks 15 - 24 on disc 1 and adding "Don't Burst My Bubble on disc 2). Get this!

Of the band's first four Immediate singles in Great Britain, it was the third one, "Itchycoo Park," which _finally brought them notoriety in the United States. To capitalize on its Top 15 chart success, the album "There Are But Four Small Faces" was issued over here in February 1968, a release whose structure resembled some of the early Beatles Capitol albums, a mishmash of LP and single tracks, and bearing only seven of the fourteen tracks on the June 1967 "Small Faces" album released in England. Not only does this double-cd set present the original British album (tracks 1-14 on disk one and 2-15 on disk two), but disk two presents the original mono mixes of all album and single tracks, most of which have become very difficult to come by over time. I'm very happy to finally have the original mono single mix of "Itchycoo Park" on cd: Because of the complexity of the phasing technique then (getting identical tracks to play a tiny fraction of a second apart), it was easier to get a more circular, swirling phase effect with a mono recording--as you'll hear if you play the two mixes back-to-back. Meanwhile, the stereo mixes of "Green Circles," "Get Yourself Together," and "Tin Soldier" all feature the entire backing track bunched into the middle, with the lead vocal on one side and any backing vocals on the other--the result being the vocals fairly buried in the mixes, so the only way you could really hear them well was in stereo headphones. The balance between music and vocals on these three tracks is much better on the mono mixes. You'll also notice a little stronger bass and backbeat on a few of the other mono tracks, especially the frustration-powered "Talk To You." If, however, mono just doesn't float your boat, the stereo mixes are all here for you on disk one, along with the final two cuts on disk two. (Apparently there is no true stereo mix of "Happy Boys Happy," but everything else on disk one is stereo.) There's even a stereo mix of "Don't Burst My Bubble," which I did not know existed. It's great, also, to have the original album (as the artists intended it) together in order on cd--including some great tracks left off the US release, "Something I Want To Tell You," the forementioned "Happy Boys Happy," and "Become Like You," among others. The liner notes are pretty informative, although I would have liked a bit more. All in all, though, this package is a winner, and at a decent price for a double import, I do not believe you'll regret the purchase.

Absolute Masterpiece, Stereo or Mono.......2002-12-30

Now this is how 60s reissues should be done. Much like the excellent reissue of The Zombie's "Odessey & Oracle", this collects all the stereo and mono masters to give a complete picture of one of the best albums I have heard this year, or ever, really. I first bought these tracks on the "Whaping Wharf" collection, not realizing that I was hearing one complete album, not just a "greatest hits" compilation. This easliy stands alongside Pink Floyd's "Pipers at the Gates of Dawn", The Who's "Sell Out", and of course "Sgt. Pepper's" as one of the most eclectic, original, and enjoyable albums of the psychedelic era. It's amazing to find songs like "Have You Ever Seen Me", "Green Circles", and "Eddie's Dreaming" all on one album. The mono mixes included here are dramatically different than the stereo versions I've had up until now, and they're just so punchy and direct that I may leave the stereo disc unplayed for the next few weeks. Included also are all the singles from this era, including the absolutely stunning "Tin Soldier". To these ears, there's nothing dated about this music even 35 years after the fact. What's next? I await a two disc set of "Ogden's Nut Gone Flake", which I admit finishes a distant second to this near-perfect album.

This is great. Anything with Ethel, Bernadette, Barbara (both of them), Mary, and Marin is beyond words. Any one of them by themselves is awesome but these ladies together are mind blowing. All of the women sound amazing but they made a mistake on the list of songs and composers. "Raise the Roof" sung by Julia Murney (I love her)was written by Andrew Lippa, not LaChusia.

OK, so it sounds crazy to review an album with Ethel Merman and Bernadette Peters on it and not mention them. But...tough. I've read enough about them to know how good they are.


Buy this album as a token of love to the producer who had the cajones to put Julia Murney on an album celebrating the last 100 years of Broadway divas.

Because SHE is one of the greatest voices of the decade!
