In my college days (the 70's) we referred to this guy as "Lord Sucks". Trust me, his music does not improve with age.

However, every music collection should include the worst imaginable music if only for a benchmark. This CD meets that criteria (along with The Shaggs "Philosophy of the World").

Buy this CD today. It really sucks and it will make you smile.

Both Lord Sutch LPs are in my collection. ...what would you think if I told you that "and Heavy Friends" contains moments of great sound from an all-star cast, supporting a real English Lord who really cannot sing?
The truth is that this album, I mean CD, is a must have. I would purchase it again for its' marque value alone. It just so happens that Sutch and the band combined create a truly unique sound.

5 out of 5 stars The Shape of Things to Come.......2005-08-10

If you ignore the poor voice and puerile lyrics this piece turns into an unexpected pleasure. Fans of the greats should give this a listen, then like me you won't stop playing it, worse still, you won't stop bragging to all your friends about how you've got half of Led Zep., a ton of Beck and Redding, plus the late great Nicky Hopkins. All on an album that NONE of your friends would ever have heard of. In the words of the great Nelson of Simpson's fame "HA HA".
The soon to be superstars all seem to be having good clean fun,
honing their skills for the future. Other members of the band --although unheard of (to any great extent)-- nonetheless do more than adequate work, All together a very nice surprise.
Top notch. Fully recomended.

How can you go wrong with an album that contains Hendrix alumnus Noel Redding, half of Led Zeppelin, session man Nicky Hopkins (who played with the Beatles, Stones, and the Who), and Jeff Beck? Answer: you can't. If any album could have benefited from extensive liner notes, it is this one. At times I could play spot the classic rock god fairly easily. But, I would like to have been able to read up on who played what on each track. Yet, what's important here is that you get very good classic rock tunes from a very talented bunch. Although I had never heard a Sutch album before, I was not disappointed. Sutch is not a great singer (he's no Jack Bruce), but his bluesy growl makes up for in attitude what it lacks in range. Listening to Sutch is a like hearing a cross between the Kinks and Led Zeppelin--a bit like Iggy and the Stooges circa 1968. In short, this album rocks hard. 40 minutes of thunderous blues. I particularly liked "Flashing Lights." If this album has a draw back, it's in musical repetititon. Most of the tracks are the same tempo and Sutch doesn't vary his delivery style much at all. Even so, Sutch and Heavy Friends have, if anything, lots of energy. You'll be playing this one again right after you hear it the first time.

Any Jimmy Page fan who is starved for "new" material from the maestro will certainly want to purchase Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends. Page plays on seven tracks, and Produces this great album by Britian's once premiere musical mad-man. Lord Sutch is fondly remembered as the one who had the original idea of starting a University in London named after The Beatles. Many tabloids, and the BBC, in the UK payed tribute to the once reigning king of Pomp & Outrageousness back in August of 1999 when the Lord passed away leaving behind a legacy of fond remembrances. The album Heavy Friends includes not only Mr. Jimmy Page, but also Jeff Beck, John Bonham, Nicky Hopkins (keyboard extraordinaire), and the late great Noel Redding, respectively. I enjoyed this album when it originally was released back in 1970, and was thrilled to have purchased it again recently on Amazon.com at a reasonable price. Memories, musicianship, and a great set list make this a valuable musical statement for the 21st Century when one yearns for the good old days when the music spoke volumes to a generation in need of much light. Buy this CD, bypass the datedness of some of the sentiment, crank it up and Rock your brains out with the mad-happiness of Screaming Lord Sutch and Heavy, Heavy Friends.

5 out of 5 stars five for the first album.......2004-10-16

Believe it or not, the first album on this disc, Lord Sutch And Heavy Friends, in spite of the presence of Jimmy Page, John Bonham, Jeff Beck and a host of other major British Rock stars, was not a hit AT ALL in the US when first released in the early Seventies. In fact, my first exposure to it happened due to being a broke teenager, forced to troll through the cut-out cassette bins in search of something decent upon which to spend his lunch money. Needless to say, as a Zep fan, Heavy Friends caught my eye. And what the heck? $1.99 wasn't too much to ask, so I took a chance and was rewarded with an item which would eventually represent what I imagined was the very definition of Rock 'n' Roll itself: Loud, raucous and nothing short of magical, unplanned perfection . . . Not unlike conceiving Einstein in a one-night stand. Sutch couldn't have planned it, any more than he could repeat it. Here is the genuine article. And although Hands of the Ripper does not quite live up to the promise of the first album, it's worth the extra cash, if for nothing more than the title track. I'd consider this disc 5 stars if all it had on it was Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends. (Although, you have to admit, "Hands of Jack the Ripper" is a pretty cool title.)

4 out of 5 stars UPDATE -I've listened to the LP, maybe the CD is the same???.......2003-08-17

I have not listened to the CD which I did not even know existed until now. There is no song listing for this CD so I have no idea whether I'm even interested in buying it. If it is one and the same as the original LP then by all means GET IT! The backing musician lineup reads like a who's who of early rock, Jimmy Page, Nicky Hopkins, Noel Redding, John Bonham, Jeff Beck, and more..

These are short compact rock tunes, almost ditties. Sutch cannot sing, that much is true. That's why he is (was - suicide? late 90's) called Screaming Lord Sutch. It is not about his singing, he does lay down the appropriate urgent energy about such fun but trivial topics as Flashing Lights, A Union Jack Car, Gutty Guitars...backed by some of the most recognizable names in rock when they were in their early days is the most fulfilling.

I have no idea if they've sonically cleaned up or messed up the old LP version on this CD. Someone help out here or I'll be back after I purchase the CD.

I'm Back. I found out that this CD (I think...) (Waxin' Gold Records - Germany 1995 SD 9015/49) is actually the original "Heavy Friends" LP content and the "Hands of Jack the Ripper" LP combined into one CD. I can do without the Ripper (tracks 13-20) but the "Heavy Friends" part (tracks 1-12)is still a showcase for all of the young budding musical talent at that time in 1970. It's a fun ride through 12 songs then transitions to unlistenable amateurish mayhem from that point on. Screamin' Lord Sutch can sure scream but the quality musicians on Heavy Friends keep that unecessary excess to a minimum. I'm sure that "live" his show was a riot. However, on CD it loses something in the translation. Get the CD for the first 12 tracks, for those sonic gems alone the CD is worth it. Do yourself a favor, burn a partial copy and leave out the last 8 tracks, take those last eight tracks burn them separately and give them to your enemies...
