The merchant of mellow's first studio album since New Moon Shine (1991), and you've gotta have a heart of naugahyde not to be touched by the simplicity and uncommon wisdom of these dozen tunes. "Little More Time with You" is a trademark Taylor single augmented by a Stevie Wonder harmonica line, "Ananas" is sly and lusty, while the expertly crafted "Line 'Em Up" features a fond recollection of Richard Nixon's "shifty little eyes." A 4 star album with a couple of 5 star songs.......2007-06-13

This is a calm James Taylor album perfect for a late afternoon and an orange sunset. Not like Taylor's older rock albums, it has a more modern feeling, maybe slightly western but by no means country. Being a different kind of James Taylor it will appeal to a different kind of listener, sort of like the difference "Surprise" offers from most of Paul Simon's other work. Good, just a slightly different feel.

On here alot of the songs sound the same, that is except for the first track "Line 'Em Up" which I think is one of the all time best James Taylor songs. You remember how "Your Smiling Face" was jus a complete hit all the way around from the beginning? Well this is like that. From the first note you know that its well written and equally well sung. After this early climax there seems to be alot of filler kind of material with slow ballads such as "Gaia" and "Enough To Be On Your Way". "Jump Up Behind Me" is the next thing close to a 5 star song. A warm and well paced beat paired with Taylor's sultry vocals. "Another Day" stands out among all of the other slow songs. Slow at the beginning, but the it picks up slightly. This album ends on a nice note with "Boatman" and an old tune Taylor turned into gold caled "Walking My Baby Back Home". If you hang on long enough you will hear bonus track 13 which holds no particular intrigue. Just a sporadic little western blues jam Taylor might have put together at the last minute. Its kind of silly, but sung well.

This is a 4 star James Taylor album with a couple of 5 star songs on it. The rest are a little bland. I wouldn't recomend it to those unfamiliar with Taylor's work just as I wouldn't tell some one about Paul Simon and then hand them a copy of "Surprise". But if you like James Taylor, its worth a try.

JT Hourglass.......2007-04-10

The award winning album is probably one of the top 5 JT albums out there (amongst Mud Slide Slim, October Road, Gorilla and Sweet Baby James).

I use this CD personally for sound quality car audio competitions, as the quality is absolutely amazing (plus JT is my fav music artist). By far one of his best recorded albums along with October Road.

Finally....."Hourglass" is James Taylor's first studio Album in 6 years. Released in 1997, featuring great artists like Sting, Stevie Wonder, Yo-Yo Ma, Michael Brecker and Branford Marsalis, Taylor put his heart in releasing this album. The result is a collection of relaxing, melodic and pleasant tunes and songs all related to love and family.
James Taylor is back to the basic of his guitar sounds and tunes and this album is a perfect example to that, showing Taylor at his best; highly recommended to all the fans and to anyone who wants to hear a great Folk Soft Rock album.
If you are new to James Taylor's music and like this album, I recommend you try another CD titled "One Man Dog"

Sweet Baby James does it Again. . ........2006-08-31

Hard to believe that more than 35 years have passed since JT's debut. As one of the most talented of 70's performers, Taylor has consistently turned out material that superbly showcases his enormous gifts as a singer-songwriter. While some have knocked him for being too mellow, anyone who doubts that Taylor can rock should take a listen to his live rendition of "Steamroller Blues" (from his first Greatest Hits album). In fact, I once saw him bring a staid group of tuxedoed award-show attendees to its feet during a rousing live performance of "Steamroller."

Nevertheless, Taylor has always known himself, his forte and he never falters on delivering what he does best. A matchless ballad singer, Taylor often seems like a comforting force of nature: "Fire and Rain," for example, is as moving today as it was in 1972. On Hourglass, "Enough to be On Your Way" is a ballad that rises to the level of "Fire and Rain" while "Look up from your Life" is an impressive addendum to "You've Got a Friend." "Line 'em Up" pokes fun at political hypocrisy during the winding-down stretch of Vietnam; the song is a gentle but nonetheless terse comment from a baby boomer who reminds us of the turbulence of that era, though it could apply to today's scene. Taylor's tenderness, his wry sense of humor, patience and excellent musicianship are all on display here. "Hourglass" is definitely a keeper--an indisputable testament to James Taylor's staying power!

Deserves many more than 5 stars.......2007-06-17

Once this album was released, I waited a good while to actually purchase it, hoping that the $20.00 price tag might come down. In fact, it took several long years before I saw the price come down, and if you listen to it, you will understand why. This is probably the finest album Mr. Taylor has released to date, and it well derserved winning contemporary album of the year in 1997.

I have given "Hourglass" as a gift many times over to people with various preferances in music, including people who, unbelievably, had never heard of James Taylor before they were given this album. My advice to everyone was (and is)always to grab one's favorite beverage, lock out all distractions, get comfortable, and LISTEN. I do not believe James Taylor's music can ever be used simply as background music; His songs demand that one really listen. Each song on "Hourglass" is like a crown jewel. On occasion, some music critics unjustly criticized Mr. Taylor's songs as "all sounding alike." This has never been true, and if anyone wants to demonstrate just how incredibly varied and rich his songs are, one can do no better than point to the songs on this album. Everyone to whom I have given this album absolutely loves it, even one friend who claimed to only like country-western music. This particular friend sadly divorced a couple of years after I gave her this album, and she told me that when she and her husband divided their albums, they argued over who should get "Hourglass." Of course many country-western artists have been influenced by Mr. Taylor's work, and he has been influenced by some country-western artists as well; the legendary George Jones springs to mind. So, it was no surprise to me that this woman who "only listened to country-western music" fell in love with "Hourglass." This is not to say, however, that "Hourglass" could be considered a country-western style album.

I do not believe that one can truly and accurately "categorize" Mr. Taylor's work. Mr. Taylor is in a class all by himself so far as I am concerned. He is one of a kind, a true original, and as someone once observed about the great American writer, Eugene O'Neil, "it is very hard to be an orginal in America." Mr. Taylor has to be counted as one of the few in that select group of Americans. So, on that note, I am, as ever, happy and excited to recommend this album to lovers of all types of music. From the brilliant "Line'em Up" to "Walking My Baby Back Home," the songs on this album are worth hearing, worth loving, and worth keeping.

It is amazing to me that the balladeers of the late `60s and early `70s don't get any airplay on the classic rock stations. JT was, and remains, one of the best. He has one of the easiest to listen to voices I can recall hearing. Whether backed by only a six string guitar or the entire band, you can just sit back, close your eyes and relax. The songs on this album are classic JT, with no throw-away material. With the SACD version, you get very high quality sound reproduction. This recording is wonderfully warm, clean and open. You can hear the air around JT's voice. My breathing slows down listening to this SACD. This was the first SACD I purchased several years ago, and it still gets listened to more than many of the more recently purchased SACDs simply because of its sheer aural beauty.

Why buy the SACD? After listening to DVD-A and SACD for some time, I really have gotten to dislike listening to CDs because CDs sound harsh and brittle. CDs produce listening fatigue in minutes. It is hard to explain the subjective difference between the sound produced by SACD and DVD-Audio and the sound produced by a CD. Essentially, it is like trying to reproduce cool seaside air with the dry brittle air blowing out of an airconditioning nozzle in a jet airplane. In a very literal sense, the CD format is like playing a violin with a hack saw -- there is simply no way to smooth out the saw teeth sufficiently to make it sound correct. SACD and DVD-Audio fix the problem by giving you enough data to filter out the audible errors created by digitizing analog sound.

But this SACD is an awesome sound experience. I originally purchased this SACD for my wife, but when I listened to it, I was absolutely blown away with the sound quality. JT was in my living room, and the neighbors thought so too. My 7.1 system using Monitor Audio S10 mains powered by Denon Amps show the system off right. The track "Gaia," about 4 minutes in shows the tighest, cleanest low end of any SACD I have. I listen to this CD often and am waiting for another JT SACD in hopes that it is as fine a production as this one certainly is.

Folk music seems simple, and many pretenders pull into town with little more than a presentable voice and a handful of beginner guitar chords. Much more infrequently, performers come along with basically the same constituent parts but through the sheer force of their artistry and integrity are able to use these simple elements to communicate whole lifetimes of experience. Such a performer is youthful Kate Rusby, who sings with the focus and depth one usually associates with the graceful compensations of age. Her crystal-clear voice (reminiscent in turns of Linda Thompson and Sandy Denny) rings out from the first cut. Rusby's assured delivery is dappled with small, unmasked idiosyncrasies that add emotional immediacy. Meanwhile, the all-acoustic presentation is inventive but never slick or overwhelming. Wonderful debut, but she has improved!.......2004-05-10

While this is a wonderful debut album from one of the greats on the folk music scene today, I really must tip that her anniversary album "10" reprises the better half of this album with notable improvement to every track, rendering it somewhat irrelevant. "10" is really the album anyone should start with (it also reprises half of her second album, "Sleepless", as well as adding a few more indispensibles) and after that, her latest, "Under the Stars". If after those you still can't get enough, then you might want to look again at this album, whose other half is certainly worth having as well, but not as dire.

i must admit that i heard this on a recorded tape while i was waiting for a girl i was babysitting to fall asleep, and i may have missed the last song or two, but what i heard was amazing. this woman's music is beautiful--you lose yourself in her lyrics, her voice, and her stunning guitar riffs: especially when you expect to hear a child's lullaby tape, and you get kate rusby. someone you may never have heard of, but if you know one thing, you know that as soon as you can get to the store you're going to buy her cd.

If I ever Needed a gentle soothing voice to lull me to sleep at nights, Kate Rusby would be right there by my side. English folk sensation has put together some very formular traditional songs with her own personal touches to them...how many more times will "I Am Stretched On Your Grave" be covered.

Although I like all three of Kate Rusby's c.d's "Hourglass" is my personal favorite and it isn't only my favorite of hers but of any folk c.d in general and I have never been deeply rooted in the folk genre before then, she just may of changed that for me.
What distiguishes the three is only one song "A Rose In April". I like all the songs but "A Rose In April" literally hits you and you can't help but feel the tragedy it holds...it tugs at the heart strings and never lets go. There are some uptempo songs and cheerful songs,"Sir Eglamore", "Jolly Ploughboys" and "Stananivy/Jack And Jill" are very good.

I don't think you really need to be a avid folk listener to appreciate this c.d, it's a great c.d to unwind to your day and not have something or someone screaming at you...you have had enough of that through out the day as is.

Five Stars?.......2002-05-03

Five stars? These are all pretty songs, but I wouldn't say the album belongs in five-star territory; for the most part, you have to go over to Ireland for that. Not long ago I heard Kate perform in front of Altan, and one thing I couldn't help noticing was that Mairead, in addition to having a sharp Irish accent, also takes pains to sharply enunciate every syllable of the lyrics she sings. Kate's voice has a tendency to be suppressed in the instrumentals.

My most played CD from last year........2002-04-18

Browsing a record shop last year I picked up Little Lights at the time of its release. I liked it well enough to get Hourglass a few weeks later. Since then, this is the closest I've come to wearing out a CD.

I'm hardly a folkie, but I found this CD very accessible as I'm sure many others would. The blend of trad songs and Rusby originals is excellent as is the classy instrumental backing to Rusby's distinctive voice.

Poetry............2007-07-26

America returns to the music world in 1994 with "Hourglass"; an excellent showcase of the band's long-lasting songwriting talent and musical abilities.

As always, their vocal harmonies are as smooth as glass and their songs are sheer poetry. They proved that they had not lost one iota of their talent and musicianship.

Songs like Sleeper Train and Garden of Peace are classic examples of America songs that paint pictures with words and music. They even have reworkings of 2 "older" hits that they had way back when (Everyone I Meet Is From California & You Can Do Magic).

Well worth owning. You will listen to this one over and over and come away with something more each time.

"Hourglass," is a timeless master piece .......2007-06-01

This is a great overlooked gem recorded by Beckly and Bunnell from 1994.
I recently purchased their new release, "Here and Now" which I consider to be their best work within the last 20 years. After playing "Here and Now" nearly everyday I went back in their catalog looking for something else to sink my teeth into. "Hourglass," is the perfect companion piece.
The opening song starts with a haunting Santanta type riff with a song titled, "Young Moon," and it's one of those songs that a person listens to once, and then they can't stop singing it through out the day.
Other highlight songs are, "Hope." "Sleeper Train," and "Mirror to Mirror."
With the exception of "Mirror to Mirror," all of these tracks are Bunnell pined songs. For the most part this is a Bunnell solo effort project with limited input from Beckly. Interesting the new CD, "Here and Now," is more of a Beckly project.
Therefore, I would encourage fans to purchase both CD's and get a full balanced America meal.
"Hourglass" also features a hard gutiar driven song titled, "Greenhouse," which displays the group's rock roots, and picks up the tempo just at the point where "Hourglass" could have been dismissed as another dismisal MUZIC elevator filler album. Despite the fact that I have been a America fan since 1970, I have to admitt at times they have driffted off into the "Carpenters," and "Neil Diamond" zone.
Songs like "Muskart Love," and "Sister Golden Hair" were a bit too cute to be taken seriously.
However, as a whole for the last 35 years these guys have produced some of the best soft rock/pop rock music by anyone's standards.
"Hourglass," is simply one of their best with current, and up to date material, and on time lyrics, hooks, riffs, and vocals.
My only regret is that it took me 13 years to catch up with this over looked gem.

An impressive collaboration with the help of Chip Davis on string arrangements and the late Carl Wilson lending background vocals makes this CD a truly unique addition to any America fan collection. Masada songbook in a different setting........2005-08-29

The Masada songbook seems to be rather ubiquitous these days-- from piano trios to rock bands to this album, arrangements of Masada pieces performed in tribute to author Bruno Schulz and performed by the Cracow Klezmer Band.

The Cracow Klezmer Band, a four-piece consisting of arranger Jaroslaw Bester (bayan-- a kind of accordian), Jaroslaw Tyrala (violin), Oleg Dyyak (bayan, clarinet, percussion) and Wojciech Front (bass), weaves a number of different feels together on this, although to my ears, they excel at moody and melancholy more than anything else-- the swirling, extended arrangement of "Tirzah" (featuring vocalist Grazynah Auguscik in a wordless vocal), the somewhat disjoint "Pagiel" (opening with a lovely unaccompanied violin solo before violin stating the theme over counterpoint accordian) and the moody clarinet feature "Hamadah" are all among the best tracks on the record.

I find that when the band explores different veins though, the pieces are decent enough, but they don't really grab me, and hte soloing sometimes feels a bit out of place ("Galgalim" is probably the best example of it). It's never unlistenable, but it doesn't really grab you as much as you'd like. All in all, it ends up being a decent record, but it doesn't have quite enough excitement to really garner a lot of attention.

Farewell to an amazing band.......2004-08-16

First off, Athenaeum is one of my favorite bands. This may come as a surprise because that means I'm placing it with the likes of Dream Theater, Rhapsody and Dave Matthews, musicians capable of highly complex musical arrangements. Although Athenaeum excels in musicianship, their songs don't have the same twists and turns that these three said bands have. Their songs are much more (for lack of a better word) simple.

But even so, I am inexplicably drawn to their simplicity, and in having done so, I connect with the sound in ways I cannot explain. It started with the first song on their self-titled album, "Suddenly". The harmonizing voices and whimsical guitars were enough to enamor me of the band and its intimate sound. And now they have released their third album, Hourglass, a compilation of previously recorded and unreleased material. As far as anyone goes, it's a new album, completely new material. So I give it a listen, hoping that it will be half as good as Athenaeum and their 1998 release Radiance.

No disappointment. None whatsoever.

Hourglass's catchy hooks made their way through my head just as Radiance kept me hypnotized for months. Besides being able to `hook' the listener, Athenaeum is also very capable of varying the speed at which they play their songs. The second track, "On Her Way", which is quite possibly one of the best songs the band has ever recorded, is much faster than the band's trademark tempo. At the same time, "I Don't Wanna Be the One" has a sound reminiscent to Hootie, like the kind of song you'll listen to on your front porch. And despite its name, "Banana", will have you singing along with Mark Kano, whose voice seems to fit absolutely every emotion.

I can't help but listen to them endlessly. It's the music I can't get tired of, and it seems to fit the moment no matter what you're doing. You can be remembering a memorable day, lost in a love-struck conundrum, or simply thinking of someone. The songs will find their way to the moment, they will live the moment with you, and you won't feel so alone anymore.

Lacy, finally!.......2003-03-22

Finally, fans of Athenaeum have their chances of owning Lacy! And along with Lacy? Not much. For as long as I can remember, Lacy has been available to download. Many Athenaeum fans, as myself, believed this was one of, if not the, best song ever written by this group. As for the rest of the record, it sounded ok because I had never heard it before (well, except for the demo versions of Sweeter Love and If Baby's Gone, which presence are questionnable). I was wrong. It wasn't ok.

Being a fan of Athenaeum since Radiance, I'm starting to lose patience. Are they ever going to release a worthy fallow-up? I still believe they can, I just thought it would have been here by now. Instead, we can this compilation of songs written over the years, and two songs already on a record. Really, the only songs worth listening to here are Lacy and the title track, Hourglass. The others, you've heard different versions before in the first two records.

If you want to know what a good b-sides and rare songs compilation sound like, listen to Steal This Album by System of a Down. If you want to listen to Athenaeum, and I've said this before, listen to Radiance.

Melodic music graced by flowing lyrics.......2002-12-13

This group of songs really gets better the more time you give to it. It has beautiful subtleties in melody and the lyrics flow easily in relaxed ballads, such as Hourglass and If Baby's Gone. Just a great overall album.

Hourglass - you'd think it was a real CD........2002-09-07

Hourglass is a real CD, but it's like a "photo album" of the band and their history. They have rare demos, songs that they only played live, unreleased songs. It's definitely a great CD to have if you're an Athenaeum fan.

If you want to take a listen to some songs - you should try "Walk Away", "On Her Way", or the "Sweeter Love" demo version. Then again, the whole CD is great... so give it a try. If you're a new Athenaeum fan - I recommened "Radiance".

simply incredible.......2002-08-02

Hourglass is just great. Usually b-side or albums made up of unused music is just a novelty album to get if you're a fan of the band. Well this compilation is made up of unused material that didn't make it to their past releases...but every song is just as good as those that did. After two truly great rock albums they have released in the past couple years, Hourglass more than stands on it's own...and being that these songs are older material that for one reason or another didn't make the cut...That just shows how great this guys are. My favorites are Walk Away(sure-fire hit if given the chance), On her Way, and Lacy. Most def an album to check out if you like rock music.

I've been a fan of Phil Keaggy for near 20 years, a fan of Glass Harp for the last 5. Hourglass is the best of what you liked about 60's & 70's music. The songs are melodic, truthfull, inspiring, uplifting, and just plain fun. Remember when the music & the message made you feel good? I play guitar too, so I like to play & sing along with this cd. Phil, Daniel, & John together make up what great bands are: excellent musicianship, great songs, and an interplay to bring their creativity to a higher level.I say... Enjoy! D.Postma

Could have been great , but flawed vocals on several songs.......2003-11-19

It is difficult to write this review, because I am a huge fan of Glass Harp and of Phil Keaggy. I expected to love this album, I wanted to love this album, but some of the songs are painful to listen to.
This album has a lot of excellent songs, but several songs just should not have been included. Listening to the first five songs, I thought to myself that this is one of the best CD's I have heard all year, but when I got to "Eastern Star" my opinion began to change. Eastern Star could have been a good song, but the singer is frequently a bit flat. There are a few other songs which also suffer from the singing, sometimes the backing vocals (such as the otherwise excellent song, "That Way") and sometime the lead vocals. My guess is that they didn't take the time in the studio to do it again and again until they got it right. However it happened, these songs should have been left off the album. These guys are experienced and professional musicians; the CD should never have come out this way.
That said, there are several awesome songs on the album. I am constantly finding myself humming "Everlasting Light", and "Weather Boy" really rocks. But the poorer songs make the album difficult to listen to.
I'm sure these guys have a lot of good songs left in them. Let's hope that next time they have the guts to give us the wheat and leave the chaff on the studio floor.

This "Hourglass" Is Always Full!.......2003-08-06

"Hourglass", by the par excellence power trio from Youngstown, OH, GLASS HARP, is everything one could want from the band who had not produced an album of new music in over 30 years.

Incorporating styles both rooted in their late-60's to early 70's beginnings (think Beatles, Byrds, Cream) to the myriad rock sounds of today (without going over-the-top techno), this collection of 16 brand-new recordings does not disappoint.

The trio -- Phil Keaggy (guitars, vocals), Daniel Pecchio (bass, vocals) and John Sffera (drums, guitar, vocals) -- exhibits a tremendous musical and lyrical maturity. Three-plus decades of living and learning have enhanced what already was an awesome collection of talent.

The CD opens with a rock/blues jam, "Seven In A Box", with all three providing the lead vocals in unison over a bedrock of thunderous bass, drums and blistering guitar. Like a roller-coaster ride at a summer park, the band then takes the listener on a wild ride of rock, blues, ballads, stirring guitar solos and lyrics that reach down and touch the heart and soul and keep the blood pumping.

Personal favorites from the album include "You Whisper Something", "Image", "Voice of God Call Out" (all Keaggy-penned tunes); "What's In Your Heart", "That Way", "This Is My Prayer"(Dan Pecchio-written, with great, beefy horns backing him up on vocals); "Everlasting Light", "Once a Daydream" (John Sferra, drumming on one and strumming on the other, lead vocals on both).

This is not to dismiss the other eight numbers, by any means. In fact, after listening to "Hourglass" just two or three times, you will find yourself humming or singing to almost every song on the album the next day.

By a rough estimate, the 31 years since their last album came out meant that over 271,000 hours had passed. With "Hourglass", the time waiting was more than well-worth it.

HOURGLASS is here! 16 amazing songs.. Fresh and exciting, this album rocks with more energy than you can imagine. Lots of great harmonies mixed with many various influences. It is hard to label GLASS HARP's music. It is simply GLASS HARP. Guitarist Phil Keaggy is at his best in his fingerstyle playing, and this album is full of those trademark solos that guitarists around the world always hope to hear from him. The songs are tight and melodic. Bassist/vocalist Daniel Pecchio (former Michael Stanley Band) is playing with real fire on this album. He is in total control with his big, bluesy vocals. Drummer and guitarist John Sferra adds his moody and thoughtful songs to this album, and his dramatic and intricate drumming to the rockers. There is a chemistry to this band. HOURGLASS captures that energy and magic! My favorite songs are: SEVEN IN A BOX, IF LOVE IS ALL WE'VE GOT, WHAT'S IN YOUR HEART, EVERLASTING LIGHT and THAT WAY. 16 songs and all of them are winners!! ...- look for free live downloads there! Jazz Guitarist Dan McIntyre's new CD is titled HOURGLASS, and the elements of time and form dominate his first CD release as a leader. A Chicago area native and veteran of countless concerts, club dates and recordings McIntyre has created his own sound. His musical guitar heroes include Wes Montgomery, Herb Ellis, Barney Kessell and Joe Pass. Over the past 20 years Dan has played with Frank Sinatra Jr., Diahann Carroll, Della Reese and Diane Shuur.

Joining Dan on HOURGLASS are veteran players Dennis Luxion-piano, Nick Schneider-bass, Phil Gratteau-drums and Alejo Poveda-percussion.
