Following in the footsteps of Sinéad O'Connor and Tori Amos, Paula Cole is an art-rock singer-songwriter who turns her personal wounds into songs full of facile psychologizing and strained allegory with overwrought, humorless music to match. Harbinger, the debut album from the Massachussetts native, is full of grievances against glamorous romantic rivals, patronizing men, insensitive high school classmates and cross-burning racists--all so broadly drawn that everyone can easily join in the complaint. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars Raw Passions.......2005-10-01

I've been a fan of Paula Cole since I was 13, and that was 8 years ago. After listening to all three albums (Harbinger, This Fire, and Amen) for a gazillions time, I come to a conclusion that Harbinger is definitely Paula Cole at her best. This Fire is also very strong, but the sound engineer does not do a very good job in that one (especially in Tiger, with all the overload distortions). I admit that I probably listened to This Fire more than Harbinger (and far more than Amen), but musically wise, Harbinger is the one which I think has the most emotional and artistical values. Harbinger tracks are full of unexplainable emotions, like Hitler's Brother, Black Boots, etc. There's a certain higher level of abstractness in Harbinger than This Fire, which is a little more commercialized.
There is something about Harbinger that sounds very outdated, yet fresh everytime you hear it. Musically, Harbinger packs with a lot of interesting sounds. The whistle in Hitler's Brother gets to me everytime, and the clapping, beatboxes, etc. really do show how talented Paula Cole is. She is not just a singer with a unique voice, she's also a great composer, a virtuoso, and a groundbreaker.
It is hard to recommend this album to someone who only listen to mainstream music, because Harbinger is definitely not mainstream. Some people prefer the crispness in a record, but this is not the case. Harbinger has a very distinctive sound, it is very grey-toned and a little strange. Nevertheless, it is a kind of music that you will appreciate once you've become accustomed to. Buy it.. there's a certain CD in which everyone MUST try to listen to at least once, and Harbinger/This Fire is one of those CDs which you either hate, like, or absolutely obsess with.

Do not worry that Paula Cole's musical genre won't fit yours, my preference in music is that of Progressive House, Break Beats, Drum'n'Bass, Future Jazz, Trip-Hop, Industrial Ambience (i.e. Biosphere) but still I think Paula Cole is amazing. Her music is the kind of music that penetrates all kind of genres.

4 out of 5 stars Great Debut.......2005-09-03

Singer/songwriter Paula Cole comes from the same school of passionate music that Tori Amos & Sarah McLachlan do, and Paula can certainly hold her own against her sisters in torchsong. Her debut album from 1994, "Harbinger," is an excellent album, showing off Paula's emotional voice and songwriting that would later make her a star with her acclaimed follow-up, "This Fire." "Harbinger" has such great songs as "Happy Home," "Watch The Woman's Hands," the great rock of "Chiaroscuro," the dark "Black Boots," the beautiful "Dear Gertrude," and the political bent of "Hitler's Brothers." Paula Cole's confessional songs may not be for everybody, but overall, "Harbinger" is a solid debut disc for this very-talented artist.

5 out of 5 stars Listen to this While Reading "Cowboys Are My Weakness".......2001-03-21

I got this as a present, having asked for the album with top-10 hit "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone." I thought I would be disappointed (since that song is not on this album), but I definitely am not. Singable, folksy, pretty, hard, wistfull-- "Harbinger" evokes warm dusty afternoons, convertible mustangs, cool crisp white sheets, and cold bottles of beer. Cole's voice is beautiful but not achingly perfect like some of the latter-day folk divas, which I like.

This is a great album to listen to as you read "Cowboys are My Weakness" by Pam Houston, which all Paula Cole fans should read--I think Pam and Paula must be cousins!

5 out of 5 stars Honest.......2000-12-07

_Harbinger_ is an honest and passionate album, with a bare-boned intensity. Paula Cole expresses the angst of being *different,* overlooked, underappreciated. Each song contains within it a little world that captures a particular essence or quality of some moment of existence where you realize what it means to grow up. Paula Cole acknowledges the little sacrifices, the major and petty disappointments. Overall, this is quite a satisfying album.

5 out of 5 stars One of The '90s Best Efforts.......2000-01-20

"Saturn Girl" is still a hit waiting to happen, and this is an excellent, unusually nuanced and marvelously sung record that occupies its own unique artistic space. Cole has made a truly great album (this one), a good one ("This Fire") and a regrettable one ("Amen") but she hasn't yet made her masterpiece. So, onward!

4 out of 5 stars Jazz lovers should know about "No One Knows".......2006-04-20

I have never written a review here before, but Eric Comstock has accomplished something so special with his CD "No One Knows" that I wanted other people who love jazz-inflected singing and solid musicianship to know what a find it is. Comstock's taste in tunes is impeccable and he has combined some well-known standards with more than a few surprising gems that deserve a wider audience. He knows his way around a lyric and his understated vocals display an unerring truthfulness that on more than one occasion reveals unexpected emotional depths in the material. (The title track is the first-ever recording of a Strayhorn rarity that sets an extremely high bar for all future versions.) The arrangements by Comstock and Tedd Firth are smart, swinging, and polished. And the all-star band that includes Frank Wess, Wycliffe Gordon, Eric Reed, and Matt Wilson rises to every occasion to turn in tight ensemble work and several killer solos. Guys of this caliber don't need the gig. You get the sense that the whole project is a labor of love from start to finish for everyone involved.

Album Description

First time on CD for the 1982 sophomore solo album from Dan Seals, formerly one-half of the hit-making duo England Dan And John Ford Coley and the brother of Jim Seals from Seals & Crofts. This release sees Dan sliding comfortably into his new Country Music direction, only touched on during his original duo's heyday in the '70s. Wounded Bird. 2006

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars still going strong--more great soft rock.......2006-11-05

With this 1982 follow-up to 1980's "Stones", Dan Seals (he dropped the "England" part of his name here) turned in another really strong album. Don't be mislead by the above description indicating that "Harbinger" finds him transitioning to his more country-fied sound that brought him huge commercial success--he's still with producer Kyle Lehning & basically this is "Stones" volume 2. That's not a major problem though, because this album is often every bit as strong as its predecessor. It's also a shame that "Harbinger" was such a commercial flop because, somewhat ironically, it's clearly a better album than either "Dowdy Ferry Road" or "Some Things Don't Come Easy" by England Dan & John Ford Coley.

There's lots of high quality stuff here. The album-opener "Can't Get You Out Of My Mind" is marred a little by some annoying spoken vocals, but otherwise it's supremely ominous, with a cathartic chorus and stinging lead guitar. "In My Heart" is a wonderful, bouncy feel-good tune--it sounds a LOT like ED & JFC's "In It For Love". "Not Every Heart Succeeds" is an irresistibly catchy minor-keyed pop-rocker where Seals makes great use of his falsetto. "It Will Be Alright", though a little marred by the overdone gospel-style background vocals, is a soaring ballad; it had previously been recorded by Airplay, a group that included David Foster & Jay Graydon, though Dan's version here is clearly preferrable. "I Could Be Lovin' You Right Now" is really good, with a chorus punctuated by a nice guitar line. "It's Not Gonna Be That Easy" is a strong display of excellent melodicism and harmonies. "Up To Me" is a little sugary, but still a catchy, breezy feel-good tune. The Dan Seals-penned album-closer "Harbinger, Sage Or Fool" doesn't quite feel fully realized, and it's a bit overproduced, but it's nicely tuneful.

The two weakest tracks are the sleepy and somewhat dull ballad "I Don't Believe I'll Fall In Love Again" and the ho-hum pop-rocker "Once In A While".

You might laugh at the continuous parade of love lyrics on the album, especially with the knowledge of the disastrous losses Dan Seals suffered in an IRS battle that occurred in the time period between this album & his previous one. However, there's one track where he makes a direct nod to everything he lost, the aptly-titled "Bad News", which he co-wrote, & it's a gem; it's got a roadhouse blues flavor to it & crafty, devastating "dangerous woman" lyrics--I'm not sure how autobiographical this song really is, but the fade, where he runs off a list of the things one could lose, is a clear reference to his IRS case.

All in all, "Harbinger" is a very strong record that's essential for any fan of Dan Seals'/ ED & JFC's mid-'70s to early '80s period. Thumbs up to Wounded Bird Records for making it readily available on CD in the US.

5 out of 5 stars Encore! World, Take Ethel Back!.......2000-04-09

This CD is a must-have for all musical theatre enthusiasts! Though the GYPSY preview is the supposed centerpiece of the CD, it is the Hello, Dolly! selections that solidify this CD's placement on my top 10 list. The recording of Jerry Herman's "World, Take Me Back" and "Love, Look in My Window" are wonderful! The medleys of old classics provide a rare glimpse into the off-Broadway Merman. The CD is wonderful. In fact, the jacket provided some EXTREMELY interesting information and rare pictures. Ethel is wonderful!

4 out of 5 stars Merman in The Raw.......1999-12-01

This is the beginning of what I hope will be a series of CDs that will bring Merman fans her rarest and best recordings. Although it might have been helpful to tell listeners that the medley tracks were made by Ethel for her then-fiance Ernest Borgnine (and recorded with Goldie Hawkins at the piano), these rare glimpses of Merman singing pop love songs is priceless. Likewise the songs from "Happy Hunting." Although the "Gypsy" demos have already been released, the "Hello Dolly" cuts are something I never thought I'd hear on CD. It is too bad Merman's live versions (recordings are available) of these songs weren't included, but perhaps they are forthcoming. Note to the producers: how about Ethel's work on Verve, and the full version of her live album? Ethel fans are going to love this one!

From studying under Amy for a few weeks, it is nice to hear her sing from an audience ear rather than a student. I have not heard these pieces done before, and her lyrical sound makes you very "excited" to sit and just listen to the CD. I would recommend this to singers who especially need a good model for a light & warm/rich lyrical sound.

    5 out of 5 stars pure delight.......2005-12-26

This recording dances out of the speakers. What a pleasure to hear these rare songs sung with such joy and verve. Good notes, English text, but not the French original.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Eric Comstock's CD might be the spirit of Manhattan.......1998-07-07

He's wrapped up a collection of interesting, witty, touching songs and released them in this CD called, "Young Man of Manhattan," with a Manhattan mood from a more golden era, when young men in dinner clothes strolled home, jacket over the shoulder, after dancing until dawn. Sort of Fred Astaire or Cary Grant.

The CD is arranged meticulously. Hip, nostalgic, with some songs as familiar as the Empire State Building and some forgotten or unknown, all presented with a energetic jazz piano input, and a direct vocal approach. He includes a song of his own, "It's After Hours," a jazzy melody that builds nicely, with a strong beat, John Loerke on bass and Scott Napoli on drums. But Comstock also includes numbers like "S'Wonderful," and "About a Quarter to Nine,"

Comstock's strongest point may be his own talent in choosing the right material, arranging them with understanding and charm, and bringing in the best accompanists. He's comfortable with his choices, and should be, since he did most of these arrangements. With a warm vocal approach to his songs coupled with a limber, versatile piano, and his variety of material, Eric Comstock shows what he can do in this first recording.

4 out of 5 stars poetry in the everday.......2003-07-16

I love the combination of singable melodies and clever (and sometimes even thought-provoking) words. Winston Clark's perfect arrangements and impeccable piano accompaniment provide highlights both for the wonderful (and, let's face it, some not-so-wonderful) songs. I have listened to "I Love a Lad" about two dozen times, and it still gives me goosebumps when she sings "and one day it will sift away." What a choice of words!

    5 out of 5 stars A charming, witty cabaret.......2002-07-29

Clark Gesner's show, which played a limited run at the york theater in New York city, was as witty, sublime, and subtle as he was in life. I highly recommend this funny, fun cd for any musical theater fan.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Original.......2000-07-06

This CD by Clark Gesner is fantastic. The majority of the songs are hilarious and raise many points that will leave you wondering, "hmm...I wonder why I never thought of that!" Though the cabaret feel is exemplified by the absence of orchestrations, each song is strong and reminiscent of his other major work: You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. I firmly believe this CD to be a good purchase; I only wish that there were a story combining all the songs for what a musical this would make!

2 out of 5 stars Good ideas, bad execution........1999-03-05

Though many of the ideas are good (some are downright profound) the lyrics and the songs leave a lot to be desired. The jokes are infantile and not at all clever.

5 out of 5 stars What "show biz" is all about!.......2003-12-29

This is Ethel Merman doing more or less the same (marathon) program as her "Merman in Vegas" disc, but a year or so later in some other venue -- the liner notes are very cagey about exactly when and where. Hard to believe, though, that la Merman had been touring in this show for all those months, because she sounds brilliantly fresh of voice and (mostly) attitude. Rather charmingly, she speaks a few stilted lines of patter about her (relative) inexperience in doing nightclub singing ("Usually I'm on the other side of the highball") but mostly she does what comes naturally, belting number after number from her vast collection of showstoppers, a capsule history of Broadway from 1930 to 1960.

Plus there's a well-crafted medley by Roger Edens offering snippets of everything from "Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries" to "Small World," and a few novelties such as a special material version of "Lot of Livin' to Do."

The disc has the slightly boxy, unresonant sound of "live" recordings of the period, but the source tape was apparently in superb condition, without any dropouts or distortion. Merman's voice is well forward, with the band more in the background, which is probably an accurate representation of what the act sounded like in a club. The audience is warm and appreciative but mostly unobtrusive -- not like, for example, a Garland audience that never stops cheering.

Highlights for me: a rousing eye-opener called "This is It," a primo example of what Ethan Mordden calls the "Hot Damn I'm Merman" number, Berlin's "Alexander's Ragtime Band" taken at an insanely fast tempo without Merman's missing a single beat, a jazzy arrangment of "Blow Gabriel Blow" in which Merman really sounds like she's having a blast, and a change of pace for a wistful "They Say It's Wonderful" in which the singer pulls her trumpetlike voice back to a caressing pianissimo.

A bonus track offers Merman in the 1980s rehearsing her signature "I Get a Kick Out of You" with an unidentified accompanist; even at 70-something the core of the voice is still clear and absolutely on pitch, and in the couple of brief discussions about tempo and phrasing, she sounds a very easy and pleasant colleague.
