A great collection of klezmer favorites!.......2006-09-30
Premiere violinist Itzhak Perlman is joined live in concert by four premiere klezmer groups: Brave Old World, The Klezmatics, Andy Statman, and the Klezmer Conservatory Band. Vibrant, poignant and distinctly old-world, klezmer is the musical style that developed among Eastern European Jews. Featuring the soulful fire of violin, clarinet, accordion, mandolin and vocal leads, accompanied by cimbalom (a hammered-dulcimer), piano, drums. There are a few soulful slow tunes mixed in amongst the fiery dances, but most of the selections on "Live in the Fiddler's House" are fun and up tempo, full of the instrumental virtuosity one would expect both of this genre, and of a concert violinist of Itzhak Perlman caliber. Klezmer is some of the world's best good-time music, right up there with Irish jigs, Cajun two-steps and country banjo pickin'. But it's not all sweetness and light; inherent in the mournful, minor mode of this traditional music is blend of opposites--both the sorrow of persecution and defiant sense of fun-in-the-moment inherent of a culture displaced, trying to maintain its identity in an ever-changing and often hostile world. And therein lies klezmer's appeal to the soul. For more great Jewish music, try any of the separate releases by Brave Old World, The Klezmatics, Andy Statman and his band, and the Klezmer Conservatory Band. You might also enjoy "The Hidden Gate: Jewish Music Around the World," the traditional Sephardic music of the group Voice of the Turtle, and the unplugged world fusion of Basya Schechter and Pharoah's Daughter in "Out of the Reeds."
Best Klezmer album.......2004-11-16
To me, this is the best klezmer album I've ever listened to (and I have quite a few). And it's a live album. Although it's a kind of live version of "In the Fiddler's House", the repertoire is not the same (they only share one or two songs). The bands accompanying Itzhak Perlman are at their best (they are the best klezmer performers!). I prefer, personally, Andy Statman's clarinet and mandolin (Andy's Ride and Meron Nign/In the Sukke are my favorites); then there are great moments with Brave Old World (Doina Naftule and A Hora mit Branfn are beautiful pieces) and the Klezmatics, of course. The 12 minute finale is an absolute well crafted medley, under Klezmer Conservatory Band's leader, Hankus Netsky. I did'n want it to end.
I don't like at all the women voices of Klezmer Conservatory Band, although the instrumental pieces (like Khosidl) are amazing.
There is not a second in this album which is not top klezmer.
This was a fun C.D........1999-01-16
For people who are into Klezmer music this is the finest C.D.! For Klezmer music lovers, this is a masterpiece.

A very nice album for SCAdian ears.......2007-04-25
This is a fun album. it's festive, playful, and a real joy to listen to. There is something for everyone in this album--including and especially SCAdians. In fact there's probably at least one piece on this album that every SCAdian dancer, musician, and/or bard will recognize. There's courtly songs, love songs, and get out of your chair dances, even formal pieces you associate with concert halls.
Whether you play in the SCA or just love great historical music, this is one of the better albums I've ever bought--on amazon or anywhere else!
Recording is defective.......2007-04-06
The first one I got had a lot of popping and crackling, and some digital defects that cause the CD player to skip. I liked the music so I bought another copy and it was the same. Both wound up in the trash. Don't waste your money on this disk.
adequate performances but totally inadequate information.......2005-04-27
It is perhaps unfair to judge the performances on this recording (presumably made in the late 1950s/early 60s? - we are not given a date) by modern standards of early music performance. Yes, there are moments when the experimental nature of the approach is all too apparent, both in terms of the [im]plausibility of the interpretations and in the [at times] excruciating intonation (a particularly pertinent example is the shawm playing in track 10). But what is in fact by far the most deplorable feature of this recording is the utter sparsity of information provided - about the performers, the instruments, the composers, the repertoire, etc. Worse still, what little that is provided is often hopelessly inaccurate: sometimes in the form of blatant spelling errors (eg the Coventry Carol becomes here 'Lully Lullary', etc), at other times factual blunders (the medieval 'Estampie' in track 10 is in fact a 16th cent [ie Renaissance] tourdion, 'Quand je bois du vin clairet', whilst John Dowland's 'Frogg Galliard', c.1597, is here given an anonymous attribution...etc, etc, etc).
In short, for those not acquainted with pre-Baroque music, this is NOT a good place to start!!! Seasoned Early Music connoisseurs, on the other hand, may find a perverse pleasure in some atrocious moments, or perhaps take interest in its value as an example of historically informed performance style in the pioneering years - but you have been warned!!
For those interested, here are some alternative recommendations if you are new to this music: firstly, 2 wide-ranging compilations by 2 well-known ensembles -
1. Sinners and Saints - The New London Consort/Philip Pickett (Decca 48559)
2. Portrait ('Moyen Age et Renaissance') - Hesperion XX/Jordi Savall (Auvidis Fontalis 'Portrait' ES9904), or either of the 2 new compilations by Savall and his ensemble(s) on Alia Vox ('Harmonie Universelle', AV9810; 'Harmonie Universelle II', AV9839).
and a compilation (mostly of early music) featuring a number of different groups -
'Pastime with Good Company' (Alpha, A901) [includes groups like L'Arpegiatta, Le Poeme Harmonique, Diabolus in Musica...]
A nice overview of very early music.......2003-12-02
This was one of the first recordings of early music I ever bought. It's a broad survey of styles and periods, from the 12th to 17th centuries. I've become a more sohisticated listener since then, but I still get this one out fairly regularly. The recording is apparently old and the digital remastering was not done extraordinarily well, but those who are more interested in music than in audio equipment should be able to listen through the occasional (minor) vinyl surface noise. My major complaint (why I gave it 3 stars instead of 4) is the lack of documentation--there is no information about the musicians, and many of the composers are uncredited (some because they actually are anonymous, but sometimes out of apparent laziness). Still, at this price it's a bargain.
Don't Be Affraid.......2003-11-19
This cd is worth picking up. Yes the first couple of tracks have pops and crackles in it. And yes it sounds as if the music was transfered directly from a vinyl source. But the performances and selections on this cd are fabulous. And you get use to the flaws in the recordings. Which I find minor.
This cd was actually the first Medieval and Renaissance album I ever bought. I bought it randomly in 1992 to try and introduce myself to these two era's of Classical music. And it was PERFECT. I have been a loyal fan of Medieval & Renaissance music ever since. I currently own 25 to 30 cd's covering these era now. And this album is still one of my favorites......

Absolutely the BEST !.......2006-05-31
Our church choir sang a few of these songs which I loved, so I decided to order it. It is a very sweet, gentle, inspiring collection of music. Many times when you get a CD, you are fortunate to find 2-4 on there that you really like enough to play regularly. But on this one, every song is wonderful. This music is so spiritually uplifting and peaceful that you will want to play it regularly. Some if may bring some tears it is so beautiful. John Rutter has a way with this type of music. You will probably want to be giving some of these cd's away to those you love.
Great for bringing a child into this world.......2005-12-22
I had this CD on while in labor with my last child. We had a wonderful homebirth and what better then to have the spirit in our home with this music as we welcomed a brand new baby. It helped me relax and helped the birth be peaceful, calm, and spiritual.
CD like new.......2005-10-02
This CD was advertised as "like new" and it was -- in fact, it was still in the plastic wrapper. I couldn't have found a better deal or quicker service. Everything was great!
The Sweetest Music.......2004-06-07
I love this CD. My family and I listened to it over and over and over again, during the last few weeks of my mother's life. It has been a comfort to me in time of sorrow. Now it brings tears every time I listen to it. This music is like loving arms around me. It touches my soul. I've given so many away, I should have bought a case of them.
This is my new all-time-favorite CD!.......2004-04-22
I bought this CD because I had heard "My Shepherd Will Supply My Need" once and loved it. But it's just one of the many beautiful songs on this CD. I'm at a loss to describe what joy this music brings to me each time I listen to it. I carry it from house to car and back again so I can enjoy it wherever I am. I've given away several "Consider the Lilies" CD's to friends and relatives, something I've never done before. Anyone who is facing a serious challenge in life will be uplifted and comforted by this ethereal music.

HIGH QUALITY WORLD MUSIC AT A GIVE AWAY PRICE!!!.......2004-06-22
I was shocked by the price of this CD and thought that this would be a bunch of recycled garbage or songs that were thrown together by some mixer just to make a CD. Contrary to my opinion, it wasn't! Palm Beats Volume 1 is an incredible compilation of world, dub, breakbeat and house music that is sure to satisfy all fans of those genre! This one will definitely be a hit for the summer and all those pool parties--and you really can't beat the price. Songs of note are from Polaris, Sidestepper and Baaba Mal! Highly recommended!
cool groove international beats.......2004-06-11
A compilation of nicely remixed groove tracks from around the globe. From Jamaica's rhythm kings Sly & Robbie, to Algeria's Gigi, to Sidestepper (my personal favorite) from Columbia. Much more than "a sample of ethnicity" with break beats,
all tunes have an organic flow--difficult to achieve for basically computer generated electronica. All tracks feature mature musicianship and polish without being slick.
All in all, a good sample of hip World Beats.

Album Description
Afshar is making a bid to capture "the here and now" of classical guitar, in her own words. Rather than revisiting the past, heralded contemporary composers such as Salvador Brotons and Dusan Bogdanovic have created works just for Afshar's skilled hands to play.
Customer Reviews:
Dr. Afshar, a master!.......2002-12-30
Lily Afshar already has two wonderful cd's out: One is made completely of a work by Castelnuevo Tedesco, and the other has the big classical guitar hits such as "Asturias" "Koyunbaba" and many more. The difference between her latest album and the previous two is that it is made mostly of brand new premieres and contemporary works. The Scherzo, Omar's Fancy, Broken Slurs were written for Dr. Afshar. The Scherzo, Slurs, and MKG Variations are all world premieres. While having brand new, never-before heard literature on this album, the great thing about it is that it still has great classics by Joaquin Rodrigo, Barrios and Brouwer. The Afro-Cuban Lullaby, by Brouwer, has an unusual, but wonderful addition, a beautiful virtuosic scale. This album truly is a wonderful collection of music which should be present in every person's collection.
American Record Guide, 2002.......2002-07-02
"Lily Afshar - a former writer for this magazine - plays beautifully on this vibrant and adventurous recording made up mostly of contemporary works. Her tone is sonorous, her technique solid, and each of her interpretations of these widely varying works is richly characterized. The recording quality is superb - I have heard quite a few recordings recently with a disturbing hiss. The sound on this one is pristine, projecting all of the details of Afshar's playing without distracting background noise.
I will not attempt to comment on all of these pieces, but I will discuss the less familiar ones. Four were written for Afshar: Salvador Broton's Scherzo, Dusan Bogdanovic's Omar's Fancy, Barbara Kolb's Broken Slurs, and Kamran Ince's MKG Variations. Broton's Scherzo is a dynamic opener for the program, full of fantasy, jagged lines, and ingenious guitar writing. Omar's Fancy is typical of much of Bogdanovic's music, with its ambient stasis and harmonies reminiscent of Eastern Europe. Also on the program is his more substantial Introduction, Passacaglia, and Fugue for the Golden Flower, a work that explores the same exotic sound world at greater length and with more technical extroversion.
Barbara Kolb's 3 Lullabies have always been among my favorite pieces for the guitar from the latter part of the last century (they were written for David Starobin in 1980). Her music is sophisticated and enchanting, and the humming in the third lullaby is always wonderfully haunting. The humming part is usually performed by a make voice, but Afshar dies it herself here, using an eerily distant, flat tone. Kolb's Broken Slurs, the piece dedicated to Afshar, follows the third lullaby without pause, its two very brief parts seeming to function as a continuation of the earlier work. Kamren Ince's MKG Variations, the final work is dedicated to this guitarist, derives much of its effect from stark contrasts; atmospheric hovering is interrupted by angular outbursts, spare textures giving way to full-voiced harmonies.
The effect of the entire program is very satisfying. Afshar has clearly thought carefully about the order of the pieces to make the most effective sequence of moods and contrasts. This is a fine release from an accomplished performer."
Rings
Possession!.......2002-02-22
Ms. Lily Afshar's new CD titled "Possession" is a wonderful mix of the
classical guitar repetoire as it stands today. It has a few well known
pieces (e.g. Afro-Cuban Lullaby -Brouwer, Invocation and Dance-Rodrigo),
some lesser played works by well-known composers and pieces explicity
written for Afshar. In the liner notes Lily says it is meant to capture
a snapshot of a single instant of the guitar repetoire. It's a great CD.
She chose 8 different composers (including Barrios who although not
modern, is finally getting play time). She plays three different pieces
by Brouwer including a beautiful, melancholy rendition of "Un Dia De
Noviembre".
Afshar's playing reflects the CD title. She plays both as if she owns
the pieces and is owned by them. For the pieces that are familiar, she
plays them like no one else! Her playing is articulate and every phrase
beautifully crafted. It has all the positive qualities of live
performance. The playing is so heartfelt that you can almost feel her
breathing.
There is lot's of new music on this CD too that on first listening
sounded interesting, and on second and third listenings sounds
fascinating. The piece "Omar's Fancy" by Bogdanovic instantly brings to
mind Persia. It "feels" Persian even without the title. The composers
that have written new music for her (Brotons, Bogdanovic, Kolb and Ince)
have done a fantastic job, and it's great to see and hear the repetoire
expanding!

I was so very disappointed when I got this one many years ago on the day of it's release. This is not Mylon's music. I don't know if the record Co. or the producer or mylon or whoever was at fault, but there simply is a vacuum in this music. I can't explain it exactly, but if one was to compare it to 'Sheep in Wo;ves clothing' one would understand.
Classic Christian Rock.......2003-02-07
This is a good cd. I recommend that anyone who appreciates Christian rock's history listen to it. The opening song sets the tone and Falling in Love (the 3rd track) has one of the best guitar solos that I have ever heard. Try it out.

The Kamkars........2007-01-12
I want to tell the world, and I want to keep them secret.
This is the best band on the plant, and I don't want them spoiled... OK?
Kurdish music highlighting the patriotism of Kurds.......2005-09-28
The Kamkars aka Kamkaran, are form East Kurdistan. Their music is symbolic of the love that Kurds have for their homeland and includes the pain and suffering of the Kurdish community as a whole. These are a people who still continue to fight to have a land to call their own, yet their music is soulful, full of hope and is a message for all Kurds to never forget Kurdistan...the land of the sun.
OH MY GOD THIS IS AMAZING!!!.......2001-11-12
I've loved music from the "Middle East" for many years now, and perhaps when I started out I had an idealized "sound" that I was searching for. Over the years my tastes have broadened, as well as my knowledge base, so I can understand the music a little better. Nevertheless, I've always wanted to find that one IDEAL Mid-Eastern music. THIS ensemble is it! This obviously isn't Arabic classical music. This is fiery, energetic, downright gorgeous music of the highest order! Hammered dulcimers, huge frame drums, bowed instruments, plucked instruments, a huge chorus of men's voices echoing a brilliant solo vocalist. I swear that this sometimes sounds like music from some long-forgotten shamanic tradition, the likes of which hasn't been seen in that part of Asia for many, many centuries. Have you ever wondered why orthodox Islamic theologians and scholars sometimes describe music as an intoxicant? Well, listen to the Kamkars and you'll know why. I can't say enough about this recording. If you're at all curious for any reason, you MUST hear this CD. YOU REALLY MUST! ARGH! IT'S SO DAMN GOOD THAT WORDS REALLY CAN'T DO IT JUSTICE. I laugh and laugh. I don't know why...
Unbelievable in this age and time!!!.......2000-09-15
THE KAMKARS
The Kamkars, a Kurdish family of seven brothers and a sister, are undeniably one of the leading musical ensembles in Iran today. Their repertoire ranges from the vast array of Kurdish music with its poignant, entrancing melodies and uplifting high energy rhythms to the traditional classical music of Iran. The repertoire of Kurdish music is richly diverse and deeply-rooted in the ancient history and culture of its proud and passionate people. It speaks of epic tales and wars, romantic love, and recounts ancient myths and stories of national and religious heroes, some of which date back to thousands of years to the time of the ancient Medes (the ancestors of the Kurds).
They are great in concert. Amazing, a whole family sticking together musically!!!

Great punk.......2006-04-19
This album is full of energy and puts you in a good mood for a whole week at each listen! The frequent guitar solos are really good and the overall band is very together. One of the tracks (I'm trying) sounds like something Rancid could have written! That's to tell you how good this album is standout tracks are: Liberation, Final Wish, I'm Trying, Buried Dreams and Toight's the night. I only rated this album 4 stars becasue this isn't my favorite style of music but for punk and punk rock lovers this is a must have album!
Awesome.......2005-12-05
This cd is probably the best cd to come out this year. LCA are one of the many good boston area bands. This cd is almost as close to perfect as possible. Best songs are tonight's the night and pretty war

The Lost City Angels are one of my new favorite bands. I saw them with Tiger Army and I loved them so much I went and saw them with Social Distortion a few weeks later. The whole cd rocks, my favorites being "Broken world" and "Today's the Day". Make sure to see them on tour this summer. They put on an amazing show and I can't wait to see them again!

Puerto Rican Hawaiian.......2004-03-23
I loved the CD. What was so interesting were the two Spanish songs, labelled "traditional". My grand parents went to Hawaii in 1900 to work the sugar cane fields. I grew up with a mixture of Hawaiian and old Puerto Rican tunes. Darren captures the style.
I later went to PR to study and found that the music I remember were old tunes. The style was different. My family sang all these songs. Thank you Darren and Julio Rodrigues for recording Palo and Que Lindo son.
