The transformation from veteran Southern rockers into fledgling country artists hasn't required much of a musical shift by the brothers Van Zant. The hard-edged guitar riffing, chip-on-shoulder feistiness, and celebrations of Southern pride on much of the material would have fit just as easily on an album by Lynyrd Skynyrd, the band in which Johnny Van Zant replaced his late brother Ronnie as lead singer. Donnie Van Zant brought a lighter touch to his music in .38 Special, as reflected here in the more melodic balladry of "Things I Miss the Most" and "I Can't Help Myself." By subtracting the extended guitar solos from 1970s Southern rock and adding an occasional banjo break or steel guitar fill, Johnny and Donnie Van Zant extend their appeal across categories as well as generations of fans. Though songs such as "Sweet Mama" and "Plain Jane" rely a little too heavily on cliché, "Takin' Up Space," "Ain't Nobody Gonna Tell Me What to Do," and "Help Somebody" are anthems with the sort of conviction that will inevitably inspire raised fists and chorus sing-a-longs. --Don McLeese

I was really surprised in a good way about the selecyion of music offered through amazon and the prices are much more affordable than any place I have found

Don't trust this CD or any CD from Sony BMG! They have included malicious "rootkit" spyware on a large number of their music CDs -- It could break your computer!!!
Excellent Rockin Country album.......2006-03-11
I loved it. This is good music. Music you cant help but to sing along to. Songs with attitude and good rhythms and super harmonies.Every song is a good song. You will definitely get your money's worth. I had the privelege of going to their concert recently. They put an incredible amount of energy in everyone of their songs and they reflect that on stage. Hats off to Johnny and Donnie for an album well done that Ronnie would be so proud of.

Yeah
< I had sworn off SONY products after purchasing the Foo Fighters last CD and installing it on my computer. I was near lost trying to figure what was going on with my computer as I tried to upload it to my I-Tunes. Tried to follow Sonys directions could not get it to run on Win2000 so read about it on Amazon Music reviews. Tried deleting it and had nothing but problems with my computer (da, da cd drive disappeared). The only thing that saved me was I had Goback installed and I reverted my harddrive to a prior date. Occasionally afterwards my cd drive would dissappear causing me to have to revert my hard drive again. Finally after losing my cd drive happened again & again, after reverting with Goback, I then uninstalled and reinstalled Norton Anti virus and Norton Internet Security. Since then my computer seems to be running like of old, but I wouldn't wish this trouble on anybody, so hope it might help someone. I took my CD back to Costco where it had been purchased and told them I was more than a little unstatisfied with the product they sold me and advised them to not carry any more cr*p like it. They refunded my money.
As for this CD by Van Zant I got at a pawn shop for $3. I did not notice it was a Sony product (else I wouldnt have touched it with a ten foot pole) until after I loaded it to My Itunes. I saw the Columbia Records logo in large size but didnt see the SONY mark. I am suprised to report that it seems to have loaded up fine and nothing seems to acting up this time on my computer but the format of this CD seems different then the two versions listed on Amazon at this time. The disc I have is a single 2 sided disc one side is CD and the other side is dvd in "enhanced LCD Stereo" . The sticker and the lableing do not say this is Copy protected like the Foo Fighter Cd I had previous problems with so I hope I am Okay. I have heard that Sony has pulled and is reissuing the cr*p CDs and thought folks would appreciate hearing my experience. As for the music on this CD sounds good enough and when I play the DVD side through the computer the music seems to have a lot more depth to it. Good luck and watch what you load on your computer!
Great Music, but it infects your computer!.......2006-01-23
All I wanted to do was transfer the music from the cd to my computer and ipod. Instead, it took me 10 minutes just to get done with installing software on my computer to actually be able to even access the music! This is riduculous! I legally and honestly purchased a cd and they won't let me play the music in the format I want without having to download software! If they all start doing this, it is like having a separate proprietory cd player for each cd you have! I don't think it is acceptable for them to be doing this, and I will refused to purchase anymore Van Zant/Sony albums. I am an honest person, I should not be punished for those that get there music illegally.

Stuart.......2005-06-09
This is an AOR masterpiece. Songs like 2+2, Does A Fool Ever Learn & You've Got To Believe In Love make this stand out over time. Originally released in 1985, this cd still makes frequent stops in my cd player. But with Johnny Van Zant you know you can't go wrong.
A Jem.......2004-06-01
When I first heard 2+2 on the radio, I was hooked. This is a jem. I love all the songs on this. I am so glad it is on CD. The song "Does a fool ever learn" can be found on Helix'es "No rest for the wicked", I wish Van Zant would have stayed together and made more music. Fans of Loverboy, Journey and 38 Special will enjoy this.
It's about time.........2004-05-23
I had this album back when it first came out, (and still do) and also went thru at least 2 cassette tapes...Now I just want it on CD...
I've noticed in all the reviews that nobody mentioned a thing about the song "Does A Fool Ever Learn".. That has to be one of the best songs on this album.. It actually tells a story about a girl that just can't come to grips with the fact that she always goes back to the same type of guy that beats her up all the time and screws her over all the time.. There's alot of females in this world that live the same exact type of life that the girl in the song does.. They just keep goin' back for more.... abuse... Maybe if they really listened to the words, it might just get to them enough, and help them realize that they don't have to live like that.. but....
Oh well...
Like the song says,.. "Does a Fool Ever Learn??".. Sad, but true,..In most cases, nope, they never do...
Either way.. "Heart to the Flame", "She's Out with a Gun", 2+2, are ALL "Killer Tunes"....
"Cool".. I can finally have it on CD now..
Criminally overlooked.......2004-01-05
I remember getting this LP in Holland back in the 80s and always listening to Midnight Sensation. One of the best opening tracks on an album ever. I'd dream about going to school in Jacksonville instead of Arnhem, The Netherlands! Later I also got a very crappy static-ridden cassette recording of their King Biscuit show off AFN. I'm glad these timewarp recordings are available on CD now!
Most Under-rated Album Ever.......2003-06-05
I was so glad to find this on CD finally! And to read that there were others that had worn out their cassettes and have never forgotten the awesome mix of melody and rock of this solid album of one great song after another. Althought the song list doesn't list it, "2+2" is on this CD--one of it's best. I could go on and on about this CD. If you've stumbled across it by mistake and have never heard it, buy it.

The brothers of storied Lynyrd Skynyrd founder Ronnie Van Zant have made no attempt to shirk the legacy of their late, lamented big brother. Indeed, Johnny fills in for Ronnie as lead vocalist for Skynyrd, and Donnie's .38 Special are true-blue (or should that be gray?) Southern rockers of the first order. The twosome's second collaboration sticks to a tried-and-true formula of Dixie bluster and guitar grit that seems to be the Van Zant's birthright. There's nothing subtle about their perspective, their roughhewn harmonies, or their blues-rock music (Kenny Wayne Shepherd contributes guitar to two numbers). That's Van Zant--take it or leave it. --Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
wow here they go again.......2006-11-03
These brothers are great. What can I say about them that I have not already said. This cd is good and holds its own. However I still think that Brother to Brother is the best cd that they have released. I cannot wait to hear more from these guys.
ALIVE AGAIN AND AGAIN.......2006-03-24
I just cant get over how well i can relate to the songs on here, and the song "Alive" oh my so so great a tune. You are sure that Van Zant's heart and soul is with this. almost personal. It is listed #10 on this CD and it is a 10! love this CD.
More great stuff from southern rock's most famous brothers.........2004-08-25
First of all, let me say this is not the exact same stuff we've come to expect from Lynyrd Skynyrd or 38 Special...but if it were, what would be the point of putting a different name on it? These guys get together every so ofetn to show us what ELSE they can do...and it's a very interesting side to their abilities. Great rock & roll, first and foremost, but also a chance to see other sides of these performers. Years ago Robin Zander of Cheap Trick did a solo album and it didn't sound just like every other Cheap Trick project...this is a GOOD thing...no, a great thing. The songs on this CD grab your attention and make you feel welcome, and if we're lucky, another volume of music from southern rock's most famous brothers will be out someday! Don't compare it to Skynyrd (and half of you out there, learn to spell their name PLEASE)...don't compare it to 38 Special...just listen, enjoy and appreciate...that's what it's there for...you won't be disappointed!
Another Solid Effort from the brothers Van Zant.......2004-05-07
This is the second album from Donnie (38 Special) and Johnny (post-crash Lynyrd Skynyrd) Van Zant. I don't think it's quite as strong overall as their first disc (Brother to Brother), but it's still very good. It's great hearing these guys sing together, too bad oldest brother Ronnie (original Lynyrd Skynyrd) couldn't be part of the team!! Most of the album is outstanding, especially "Oklahoma", "Get What You Got Comming", "Imagination" and "At Least I'm Free". "Wildside" is just OK, and doesn't seem to fit in so well with the rest.
Kenny Wayne Shepherd cameos on "Get What You Got Coming" and "At Least I'm Free", and adds some nice licks, but this album is about the VanZant boys, so it's not as guitar oriented as your average Skynyrd album. At least one VanZant is co-author on each song, Robert White Johnson is co-autor on all but 1....
Musically, very similar in tone to "new" Lynyrd Skynyrd, without as much musical virtuoso. Good Stuff.
Just As Great As The First Time.......2002-09-20
VAN ZANT II is the same sound as BROTHER TO BROTHER, once again combining the influences of the Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Marshall Tucker Band, the Outlaws, and .38 Special. "At Least I'm Free" and "Is It For Real" are about betrayal and selling out; "Get What You Got Comin'", "Oklahoma", and "Alive" call for faith and perseverance, and "What's The World Comin' To" expresses anger at modern society. The only weak cuts are "Imaginaton" and "Wildside." Overall, however, this is a great album, and the Van Zants' belief that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia since 2005 for drug-smuggling was unjustly convicted makes II an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

Customer Reviews:
A gift to us from the surviving Van Zant brothers.Excellent..........2007-04-10
This is a great sounding CD...the production is very good, meaning it sounds good at low or loud volumes. Musically, these two Southern boys have collectively done what I think the revamped Skynyrd has failed to do;record a CD in which every song is really good. Right Side Up is listed as being inspired by Stevie Ray Vaughan for getting his life together. The brothers are only given credit for the vocals and writing the songs. Hat's off to the players that contributed to this effort. The guitar playing is VERY bluesy, while also sounding distinctly "southern".
I think Ronnie Van Zant would be extremely proud of his sibling's effort.
I'd buy this again...you should get you a copy yourself.
Keep the faith...
This would be an excellent choice.......2007-02-13
I do intend on ordering this cd to add to my collection and the price is the best available
What talent came from this one family wow!!!!!!!!.......2006-11-03
This is one of the best cds I have ever heard. There is not a bad song on the whole cd. I can say for sure that these two voices together blows me away. What talent this family has I would love to hear something that had all three of these Van Zant brothers together. This cd reminds me of a cross between the Marshall Tucker Band and Skynyrd. I just love it. I hope that they continue to put music out together like this cd. Cannot get enough of it.
Brother to Brother.......2006-02-22
This is an excellant CD! If you're a fan of Van Zant you already know how good they are, and if you haven't listened to them yet, then you're really missing out!
An attractive and melodic effort.......2003-12-18
Johnny Van Zant (Lynyrd Skynyrd) and Donnie Van Zant (38 Special) joined forces and released the album "Brother to brother" in 1998. The musical approach is southern rock but it has a bit of a commercial touch to it. Songs like "Show me", "I'm a want you kinda man", and "Right side up" have the potential of becoming hits if they were included on the radio station's play lists. In "That was yesterday" you get a light feeling of Jack Blades (Night Ranger) and his way of writing songs, while "Black bottom road" reminds of Tony Joe White. Most of the time it's mid tempo songs, but the brothers had the good taste of including a real rocker by the name of "Downright and dangerous". There's also some ballads on this disc, but apart from "Can't say it loud enough" they are not thrilling, and neither "Brother to brother" or "Friend" stand out as something more than the ordinary. Over all, this is a melodic and attractive effort from the Van Zant brothers and the album is a good compliment to both Lynyrd Skynyrd and 38 Special. But a warning may be raised; if you're way into southern rock of a harder kind you might find this album too soft.

Stuart.......2005-06-09
Johnny Van Zant teamed up with Dann Huff (Giant) & created one of the best albums & the best single of all time. I am referring to the song/album Brickyard Road (Tribute to his brother Ronnie). If you like guitar then this single is for you. More noteworthy songs are: Three Wishes, Love Is Not Enough & Take Every Beat Of My Heart. Also check out the import cd Van Zant - Van Zant for other great songs like these.
It's okey but not great.......2003-05-23
"Brickyard road" is a blend of southern rock and pop-metal. Johnny Van Zant is the brother of the late Ronnie Van Zant (Lynyrd Skynyrd's original singer) as well as Donnie Van Zant (38 Special) - could their dad's name be Sonny and their mother's Bonnie?. Anyway, most of the songs on this album is rather average or mediocre but that doesn't mean they're worthless - they're just not outstanding. But the song "Brickyard road" (about the feelings for Ronnie) is really great, and clearly show that Johnny Van Zant can do much better than primary shown on this album.
Southern Rock at it's Best.......2003-03-04
I own this on cassettte and played it at least twice a day in my car until my tape deck took it hostage. If you like Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, Molly Hatchett, et al, you will love this. It is hard-rocking with excellent vocals.Try to forget that Johnny is Donny's brother and just listen to the man. Excellent!
The Best.......2002-02-14
This CD is a MUST HAVE for all ya'll SKYNYRD fans out there (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE)! Gimme'a Hell Yeah! Brickyard Road is the greatest. Long live "Ronnie"!~
The best CD ever.......2000-01-24
The song Brickyard road is the most special song ever written. My dad loved the song because it reminded him of his dad who died a very long time ago, and I never really understood why. But now my dad is gone and I can deffinately see what he meant. I want to say that this song makes me cry every time I hear it. I love this song.

Customer Reviews:
Finally!.......2007-02-24
I'm so glad that this album has finally been released on CD. This is the great debut album by the Johnny Van Zant Band, led by the younger brother of the great Ronnie Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
This is where Johnny started years before he became the frontman of today's Lynyrd Skynyrd.
I must say that I am quite pleased with this album. We are given several great songs like "No More Dirty Deals", "Comin' Home", "Put My Trust In You", "Keep On Rollin'", and "Only The Strong Survive", which I think is my favorite track on the album. All of the other songs are good as well.
The album comes with a nice long interview with Johnny Van Zant about his early days.
While it may not be as strong as his older brother's work, I find Johnny's work very enjoyable to listen to.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent cd, Don't buy it.......2005-12-31
This cd, like all new cd's from Sony, will infect your computer with a virus that cannot be removed. If you have already played this cd on your computer, the only way to eliminate the virus is to remove the hard drive and throw it away. Or better yet, mail it to Sony and tell them you want a new one. For more information search Sony xcp. This is a great cd, but unfortunately the Van Zant's record label is in the virus writing business.
Stop freakin' out and buy the CD........2005-12-27
Ok this CD is really great, it's a mix of southern rock and country, and it's turned out as a hard-rockin country cd.But what else would you expect from the Van Zants? The whole Sony thing that went on, yeah that was wrong, but why blame these guys? They didnt do it. They just made the usic. They went to the studio and recorded it. That's all they did. They didnt put the software on the cd. SONY did! Blame Sony. Not a couple of hard workin' guys who had no clue! Here's what Johnny said and I totally agree.
"It's kind of unfair to us," Johnny Van Zant said of the whole affair, no doubt echoing the thoughts of other Sony BMG artists whose albums are now UNFAIRLY (ALBIET SOMETIMES HILARIOUSLY)TRASHED,TAGGED OR WHOLLY IGNORED IN FAVOR OF COPYRIGHT BICKERING AT Amazon.com.
Here's what Donnie said
"Look, what we do is write music, we make music," said Donnie Van Zant, who like most artists had no idea what sort of security features, if any, his label would place on the album. "I really don't even know what DRM means, to be honest with you.
They didn't know,ok? Don't boycott them. Sony has pulled the cd's there are new cd's without the XCP junk. Buy that. Don't blame it on them, blame it on Sony.I definitely reccomend this cd. It is great. It's the best thing that's hit country music since Johnny Cash.So sto acting like jerks and buy the new cd that doesn't have XCP.
Great Southern Rock lives again.......2005-12-19
Call it rock-a-billy, southern rock or country rock, it is alive and well. This cd is well worth the wait and the price. It fits well in te tradition of the Van Zant family.
Turns out Sony Gonna Tell Them What to Do..........2005-12-17
Much has been written about the awful software included on this CD. However, I'm surprised by the rush to let Van Zant off the hook. Many (8?) months have passed since the album was first released this way, and nearly two months have passed since a security researcher finally discovered what this CD did to people's computers. Everyone seems to assume that they are deeply upset about the mistreatment of their fans by the record label, but simply lack the courage to speak out against it.
I guess this could be true, but if it is I'll never be able to listen to their music in the same way. Please tell me they aren't really just cowards who put on an act to sell music! I think I'd rather believe they are fine with sticking it to us. Or better yet, maybe they will still turn around and speak out against what is happening here like many other bands in the same situation have already done. In the meantime, I for one am not impressed with Van Zant's handling of the issue.
Security Issues with this CD persist after Sony's "patches".......2005-12-10
An update on the "rootkit" issue with this CD. Sony (and VZ, on their web site) have produced two or more "patches" that claim to address the security holes found in this CD. You should understand that security researchers have so far found that all of the patches so far released install ADDITIONAL security holes in your Windows computer. Details demonstrating the damaging effects of using this CD on a computer are available here:
http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/12/07/1343236&tid=233
It is irresponsible for Sony and VZ to continue producing this item, as it can leave your computer deeply vulnerable to being overrun by computer hackers.
