5 out of 5 stars Memories.......2007-02-20

Wow, all I can say is 'WOW'. This is a fantastic collection. This is what I grew up on and every song brings back memories of a particular time or place in my childhood. I've been buying various 'hits' compilations and many of them are remakes. So you start to listen and think, yea this is it, only to hear the voice that doesn't match your memories. Not so here, this collection is made up of all original recordings so your memories will be intact. Of the collections I've purchsed, it's the best. It can't match new music fidelity, but hey, neither did it in the 60's and 70's.
If you were born in 1958 like me, this will be a golden collection. I just wish it was a series and there were more sets like this one.

2 out of 5 stars Why listen to it for free when you can pay for it?.......2006-03-07

ClearChannel strikes again! First they bought up all the rights to the great classic rock bands music; then they saw to it that any NEW music those bands recorded would never see the light of day (BTO, Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, and many others are still making great records, but ClearChannel radio stations will not play them); now, they're spitting out their own Digital K-Tel compilations.

To their credit, this is a pretty good batch of music. It's missing a few great bands, simply because those are the bands that didn't sell their souls over to ClearChannel to pay off the dealers and bookies. Rush, Zeppelin, Floyd, The Stones, Springsteen, AC/DC, all not here because they held on to the rights to their music. Smart move guys. They can still get their new material played.

So, if you live in a rural area where the nearest classic rock radio station just doesn't come in to good, pick this up. Otherwise, you really don't have to look to far to find this stuff, and ClearChannel really doesn't need anymore of your money to encourage them to continute bastardizing the music industry.

3 out of 5 stars Classic Rock Gold.......2006-01-03

Classic Rock "Gold" is a double disc of classic rock's best. This 2-fer does have some good songs, but it also has some awkward inclusions. I had heard of most of these songs, but there's a few that I hadn't. Somehow I don't think those few should qualify as "classic" or "gold".

I wonder if this might have been better off as a single disc crammed to the maximum capacity. Still, buying this 2-disc set is much better than buying all the individual albums.

Overall Classic Rock Gold is a nice collection. It's just not that awe-inspiring. I'd say it's worth a Used purchase price.

4 out of 5 stars + 1/2 stars...Solid Collection of Classic Rock Songs.......2005-08-16

The term "classic rock" means different things to different people. In my mind, it's that decade from 1964 to about 1975. For others, it's the decade of the Fifties. In the liner notes of this compilation, the "golden age" of Classic Rock has been defined as the FM radio era beginning in 1968 and ending in 1987. They further define a Classic Rock song as "snatching the listener out of the humdrum here and now, and taking off..."

A quick look at the track list on this collection will certainly beg the question: Hey, where's _____? (Fill in your favorite song and/or artist.) Just keep in mind that Hip-O is limited by licensing restrictions. So what you wind up with are 33 songs (disc 2 actually concludes with Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again") that dominate FM radio playlists to this day.

I have only a couple quibbles with this collection. While it covers the span from 1968 to 1987, there is only one song ("Born To Be Wild) from The Sixties and five from The Eighties. Also, where are the AOR artists that produced great music, but didn't focus on hit singles? Artists like Pink Floyd, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Led Zeppelin, The Allman Brothers, etc. All but a handful of songs on these two discs went Top 40, and nearly half went Top 10.

But that's a minor complaint. Overall, this is a solid collection of some of the era's best know (and best loved) songs. For maximum effect, PLAY THIS MUSIC LOUD! [Running Time - Disc 1 75:31, Disc 2 68:19] HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Every CD like this always has a few "who are these guys?" Unfortunately this one has no secret gems by unknown bands. The greats are great and thankfully with a CD one can hit "Next" and skip the trash.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2007-01-03

What a great collection. This one's got almost all of 'em. After watching CMT's top 20 southern rock songs of all time, I started scrambling to fill in the gaps in my collection. Then I stumbled on this latest 2 CD compilation. I was surprised to see not only did they include the really big all time classics, but many others that are usually overlooked. All in all, worth getting.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection Of Southern Rock.......2006-09-24

SOUTHERN ROCK GOLD is a great collection of Southern rock featuring bands from across the spectrum. Most of the songs, both well-known and obscure, are strong. The fact that all of the bands featured (at least those members still with us) believe that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia since 2005 on drug-smuggling charges was unjustly convicted, as well as advocating increased funding for law enforcement, makes SOUTHERN ROCK GOLD an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

While not as comprehensive as their self-titled box set, this greatest-hits collection is an excellent introduction to the definitive Southern-rock band. If you've always wondered why people holler "Free Bird!" at bar bands, this album will show you, along with serving up several of Lynyrd Skynyrd's best songs: "Saturday Night Special," "What's Your Name," "Tuesday's Gone," and of course "Sweet Home Alabama." Some lesser-known but equally great songs are here as well: "Gimme Three Steps," "Whiskey Rock-a-Roller," and "That Smell." While some good material (notably "Needle and the Spoon" and "Working for MCA") is missing, this remains an excellent collection, highlighting the quality of the band's material, which is too often overshadowed by their good ol' boy image. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT TRIBUTE TO THE BAND FROM THE SOUTHEAST........2007-02-05

Readers and reviewers, I will be writing a review on the legendary compilation album entitled "GOLD & PLATINUM" by one of Rock's greatest bands and one of Southern Rock's greatest legendary bands to ever hail from the southeast. I give you one of Jacksonville, Florida's favorite sons, LYNYRD SKYNYRD. "GOLD & PLATINUM" was originally released in 1979 on vinyl/LP and cassette on the MCA Records label. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

LYNYRD SKYNYRD will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history as being one of the true pioneers of Southern Rock music. When lead singer and frontman Ronnie Van Zant joined forces with lead and rhythm guitarist Gary Rossington, lead and rhythm guitarist Allen Collins, lead and rhythm guitarist Ed King, keyboard player Billy Powell, drummer Robert Burns and bassist Leon Wilkeson, LYNYRD SKYNYRD was born. The core of LYNYRD SKYNYRD formation can be traced back to a High School in Jacksonville, Florida initially as the group MY BACKYARD. The name is later changed to LYNYRD SKYNYRD to immortalize school gym teacher Leonard Skinner, a legendary antagonist of long haired students. The band would go on to record some of Rock's greatest classics and would later record one of Rock's most sacred anthems. LYNYRD SKYNYRD'S "GOLD & PLATINUM" would be the result of of their greatest hits and accomplishments in Rock n' Roll. "GOLD & PLATINUM" is the story of LYNYRD SKYNYRD.

I will list and review certain song tracks that are of importance and relevance to this review. In my opinion, every single song track in this compilation album is good, but to shorten this review, I must only choose certain song tracks. It was really hard to choose one over the other but here it is. The song tracks are in their original exact running order as follows: DISC ONE (1.) "Down South Jukin'," (This song defines what Southern Rock n' Roll is all about. This song kicks a*s. The guitar sound makes the music sound raw and rugged. Ronnie sings this song like he dares to get in your face.) (2.) "Saturday Night Special," (This is a well recorded SKYNRRD Southern Rocker. This is another song that kicks a*s. The guitar riffs as well as the guitar solo are breathtaking and superb. This song gives a whole definition to hard rock. This song gives you the idea of what you would be doing with a Saturday Night Special and driving fast alone along the highway at night.) (3.) "Gimme Three Steps," (This is a well performed live song track of the original. In my opinion, they should have included the original song along with the live song track. The guitar playing sounds like the south has risen to invade the country with the Southern Rock invasion.) (4.) "What's Your Name," (This song sounds like a national anthem to meeting women. This song also kicks a*s. This song has a good beat to it and also defines Southern Rock at its absolute best.) (6.) "Gimme Back My Bullets," (This is a tough rugged Southern Rocker. This song truly kicks a*s. I love the guitar playing in this Rocker. This song takes Southern Rock to another level.) (7.) "Sweet Home Alabama" (This song is Alabama's proud National Anthem. This song is one of Southern Rock's greatest achievements. This song was recorded as a result of a comeback or response to Neil Young's song "Southern Man." This song has a very positive up beat to it and gives you a good feeling when you are at a bar drinking.) and (8.) "Freebird." (This song track was performed live. This song will always kick a*s no matter what. This is another song that the album should have also included the original song with this live song track. In my opinion, this song is Southern Rock's greatest achievement. This song should be voted as one of the Top Three greatest anthems of all-time ever recorded. This song is so beautiful that you can't help but feel entranced by the power of the music. I love the way Ronnie makes his whistling sound like a freebird. Ronnie also sings this song with such raw power and emotion that he could actually bring any woman to tears. The piano actually sounds like tears. The ending of this song is the real Rock stuff that is made of legend. In my opinion, "Freebird" is the "Stairway To Heaven" of Southern Rock.) DISC TWO (1.) "That Smell," (This is another good example of Southern Rock performed to perfection. This song kicks a*s. I also love the tough rugged guitar playing in this Rocker. Ronnie sings this song with such power and emotion that you can't help but feel the song along with him.) (3.) "I ain't The One," (This song was performed live. This is another good Southern Rock song that should have included the original on this album along with this live song track. This song has a very good beat to it and also sounds tough and rugged. The guitar playing sounds superb and takes Southern Rock to another level.) (5.) "Simple Man" (This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written and performed by anyone. This song is any mothers advice to her son. Ronnie sings this song with such power and emotion that he actually convinces you that it is the best way to follow. I love the power of the guitars in this slow Rocker. The guitars dare you to prove the lyrics and the music wrong.) and (7.) "Tuesday's Gone." (I love this classic slow Rocker. The guitars actually sound like Tuesday's gone with the wind. This song is another one of Southern Rock's greatest and most beloved songs.) Forgive me for leaving out your favorite songs in this album. Like I said, All of the song tracks contained on this legendary compilation album are extremely good. Overall, this is a well comprised compilation album worth seeking out.

I highly recommend purchasing this legendary compilation for everyone to own as a valuable part of their own personal music collection. This legendary compilation album will definitely stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.

In closing, LYNYRD SKYNYRD has continued to entertain us with their own special blend of Southern Rock music to this very day. However, the date of 20 October 1977 will always be a day to be remembered and will never be forgotten. It would be on this tragic day that the fatal airplane crash would claim the lives of frontman Ronnie Van Zant, Steven Gaines and his sister Cassie Gaines and Road Manager Dean Kilpatrick. Ronnie's son Johnny has taken over the helm and chores as lead vocalist and frontman of LYNYRD SKYNYRD perfectly. As of today, Super Bowl Sunday, LYNYRD SKYNYRD is planning to perform a concert on TV after the game. According to the LYNYRD SKYNYRD official website, LYNYRD SKYNYRD will perform on a special Super Bowl edition of Late show Craig Ferguson. LYNYRD SKYNYRD RULES. I think that it is safe to say that LYNYRD SKYNYRD is here to stay. So here's to you late great Ronnie, Johnny, Gary, Allen, late great Steven, Ed, Leon and Bob. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. Keep On Rockin'. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. R.I.P. Ronnie Van Zant, Steven Gaines, Cassie Gaines and Dean Kilpatrick. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.

3 out of 5 stars Not Skynyrd's best..........2006-08-06

I'm not sure why this album is a double-disc (probably because of the 14-minute version of Free Bird), but it only has eight tracks on each disc. Given the basic premise (a collection of their most successful releases), the album is solid. However, several of their better, less-known songs like "The Ballad of Curtis Lowe" are excluded. The highlight of the album is "Simple Man," which I consider to be their best song.

If you're looking for the best Lynyrd Skynyrd greatest hits album (from among the dozens that have been released over the years), keep looking. But if you just want a solid collection of some of their most famous work, this album does the job.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.......2005-10-29

All they wanted to be was the Allman Brothers Band. Oh my did they ever overachieve. If you have any doubt about the greatness of this band just play this CD.
They were underappreciated and probably still are. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame are you listening? Ronnie is one of the all time best and we won't see his like anytime soon.
There is not a bad track and I will go out on a limb and say that Sweet Home Alabama is the weakest song on the CD.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2005-06-03

These songs are pretty good, but just remember that a song doesnt have to go gold or platinum for it to be a classic.

5 out of 5 stars yes, this set has all the best.......2005-04-28

I have looked at other collections, and this one truly has all their best stuff. I know most people probably won't buy this set, but I urge you to check it out if you happen to decide to. Skynyrd has some great songs, and they brought a different perspective to rock music that was quite absent before their arrival (the perspective of patriots). I think its all awesome stuff, with killer 3 piece guitar and the whole works. This collection is boosted by the several live tracks, including "free bird" live, and though the studio version of this song rules, the live version is extremely good too. Anyways, give this collection a listen and see what the fuss is about.

Second Helping (1974.) Lynyrd Skynyrd's second album.

In the early-mid seventies, Lynyrd Skynyrd emerged from the southern United States, and quickly built up a following as one of the best classic souther rock acts out there. Their first album, Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd was nothing short of excellent, and the follow-up album was released the following year. How does the band's sophomore effort, appropriately entitled Second Helping, measure up? Read on for my review.

As you have seen from the tracklist, some of the band's biggest hits emerged from this album. Sweet Home Alabama, their undisputed biggest hit of all, originated here. It's an excellent song, however it gave fans the impression that the band came from Alabama when in actuality they were from Florida. Oh well, that doesn't lower the song's quality any. J.J. Cale's boogie-style rocker, Call Me The Breeze, also gained a good deal of popularity, and has since become another classic. It's really no surprise it remains a fan favorite! And then, of course, we have Don't Ask Me No Questions (an alternative version of this song was released as a single.) In my opinion, this song has some of the best lyrics ever found in a rock and roll song - give it a listen, and see what I mean. The non-hits featured here are by no means bad though - they are underrated masterpieces that must be heard to be appreciated. Needle And The Spoon and The Ballad Of Curtis Loew are excellent tracks that you really need to listen to to be able to fully appreciate - my words can't do them justice. In the end you are left with an excellent sophomore effort you'd have to be a fool not to love.

The remastered edition of the album gives you expanded liner notes, better sound quality, and most importantly of all - bonus tracks. In addition to two rare studio session, you get the tough to come by single mix of Don't Ask Me No Questions. This version of the song isn't too different from its LP counterpart, although it does have more piano usage. The other two studio sessions are excellent, too.

Overall, Second Helping is one hell of a sophomore effort, and it is every bit as good as the band's debut album. If you're a fan of classic/southern rock, Skynyrd's second album is more than worthy of a place in your

5 out of 5 stars Their Heydey.......2007-04-12

This is a fantastic 2 disc compilation of the Allman Brothers at their creative peak, the seventies. There is lots of great material on here that radio stations don't play for some reason. All I can say is put it on and let it play. You won't even have to hit the skip button through this stuff, it's all good. This is a great way to pick up their best material.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Collection of this Classic Band!.......2007-02-22

If you want all the big hits, the essential live cuts, and everything in between. Definitly one of the greatest collections of music ever!

4 out of 5 stars Actually, a pretty good way to get into them (WARNING: LONG REVIEW).......2006-11-25

There are one too many Allmans compilations on the market, and Lord knows they all want to be the last word on the group. And though there's simply no possible way that this can be (the Duane Allman records are ESSENTIAL), this is the best Allmans compilation I've seen so far. Interestingly, all this does is expand on A Decade of Hits, which is probably the best single-disc retrospective of the group out there. However, some weaker tracks were included, at the expense of some stronger ones. We'll start at the beginning.
Don't Want You No More and Blackhearted Woman were easily the two weakest songs on the debut - they should be pulled. But the other four selections off that album (It's Not My Cross to Bear; Trouble No More; Dreams and Whipping Post) are the four best, and should stay. Don't Keep Me Wonderin' (off the excellent Idlewild South) has a fun harmonica part, but is nothing special; Hoochie Coochie Man is a decent song, but I would've preferred the underrated Please Call Home. Midnight Rider and Revival are great tunes for sure, but the studio version of In Memory of Elizabeth Reed is sorely missed (the live version from At Fillmore East, which is good but weaker, takes its place). Speaking of At Fillmore East, Statesboro Blues; Stormy Monday and Hot 'Lanta sure belong, but what about You Don't Love Me and Done Somebody Wrong? Okay, you COULD argue that You Don't Love Me is a bit too long for this compilation. Eh, At Fillmore East is indespensible in the first place. As is Eat a Peach, a must-have simply for the stunning Mountain Jam. And I don't see why they used a live version of Ain't Wastin' Time instead of the original, nor to I get why Stand Back was included - it's a funky little gem, but it's got nothing on the epic instrumental Les Brers in A Minor, which could've easily replaced it. They actually come close to getting it right with Brothers and Sisters. I never cared much for Ramblin' Man (to be honest, I think it's a headache), but it was a smash hit and it DID do a lot to shape the Southern Rock genre, no matter how much it sucks. The live Come and Go Blues is also a loser (the studio version's OK, though), but they could've picked MUCH worse songs from Brothers and Sisters. Plus it's got Jessica (the full version, no less!); Wasted Words and Southbound, which to be frank are the only songs on Brothers & Sisters that are worth a crap. They get it right with what they picked from Enlightened Rogues, though: there are a couple songs on that album that are missed, but Crazy Love; Pegasus and Can't Take It With You are the best tunes on that underrated disc.
You'll probably want to pick up Idlewild South; At Fillmore East and Eat a Peach (the best songs on the debut are all covered here, and you'll only get one new song) as well, but Gold is the best Allmans comp out there.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Collection for the Allman Brothers Band!.......2006-11-18

This is an incredibel colleciton from one of the finest bands of all time, and a strong contender for the all time greatest American band. If you want an introduction to the band, get this! This is the only one of their "best of's" that does them justice. It has pretty much all of these songs from their first 5 classic albums. (about 25 of 35) and is much less than getting all their albums. (but you still might want to get Fillmore East.

When I got my first ABB CD (20th century...) I read a reivew that said "you WILL get more." I laughed at it because Jessica and Ramblin Man were all I needed. After listening to it, I got found the reviwer to be right, you will always want more ABB! The 15 dollars to get may be the best 15 dollars that you ever spend in your life!

4 out of 5 stars Oh Lordy, it's a heck of a great album!.......2004-10-13

It is certainly a great album. It's not a really historical album, but still it shows the geniality behind this band, that represents really well the Southern rock. The album has some really great hits such as "Tuesday is gone" and "Simple man", also featuring their best song ever, "Freebird", which is just fabulous. The longest, and one of the most spectacular guitar solos, a real guitar duel, not talking about the drums: just makes you fly like a freebird. The album starts really well with "I ain't the one". In "Gimme three steps", "Things going on" and "Mississipi Kid", they show us the power of Southern rock. "Poison Whiskey" is just fantastic; a mix of country and hard rock, really well played. Ronnie Van Zant's voice is the typical southern man voice and it gives the band that good ol' red neck taste. And besides, these guys are able to combine three guitars wonderfully well, making the sound complete. Don't forget to pay attention to keyboards, especially when it comes to that old western piano: just amazing.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate Southern Rock Album by the best Southern Band.......2004-10-05

Simple Man, Gimme Three Steps and I ain't the One are enough reasons to buy this album. A true classic. Great songs, original tracks and a great band at thier peak. With guitars and Ronnie's vocals filling the air this album will fill your taste or prehaps just wet it for great classic southern rock.

4 out of 5 stars Lee Neerd Skee Neerd.......2004-08-27

Debut album from raunchy boys of the South. Lynyrd rocks the way ABB rocks except their songs are of shorter nature. Jamming is not as essential to Skynyrd as is to ABB. For only Freebird, let alone the others, this album is essential. I Ain't the One is the very first song in the cd and it is cleverly penned and composed. Tuesday's Gone is prone to many covers. It is a slow one. Gimme Three Steps is humorous. Simple Man is another slow number. Things Goin' On has anti-Semitist lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars "Pronounced" is the Sistine Chapel of Southern rock........2003-06-02

it is a musical achievment of such virtuosity and unparalleled excellence, that it has become the measure by which all other works of art and achievement in every field of endeavor are judged...

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2003-04-21

Pronounced is the best American Band released CD in 1973, (Darkside of the Moon by a British Band). Most people look at Free Bird and just assume it is good, but it is not good, it is great. "I Ain't the One" is a great rocker, "Tuesday's Gone" is a great bluesy type tune. Gimme Three Steps" everyone has heard this one. "Simple Man" is the best song on the album. "Things Goin' On" is one of the best singalong songs ever, great lyrics. "Mississippi Kid" is also great, for God's sake it has a mandolin in it. "Poison Whiskey" is the second best track on the whole CD. "Free Bird" well, it's Free Bird. The most requested song in FM radio history. Sell your dog to buy this.

This is what all bands desire..... A live performance where it all comes together, each player is at their best at the same time.Amazing to listen to. If you like southern rockin blues give this a listen to.Duane Allman plays a great slide guitar and dicky betts ripps through soaring instramental leads with the best of them.Berry Oakley is a bassist to be reconded with back then. Two drummers/percussionist - Butch trucks and Jai Johanny Johanson are incredable together. They blend drum beats and drum fills so well together few drummers can do that. And Last but not least Gregg Allman. He fills the void with thundering keyboard endings and tastful instramental solo's when he's not adding vocals with his soulful style of singing the blues.this is worth listening to by all means. Any way this is one of my favorites, maybe it will be yours too.

5 out of 5 stars The finest Allman Brothers album ever.......2005-12-23

Duane Allman died very young, luckily we have a live recording of this caliber to remember him with.
Duane was one of the premiere slide players in Rock history.
Duane was actually the show and was "The straw that stirred the drink"
This live recording is and outstanding live performance.
All of the selections on the album are great. The ones that really stand out are Statesboro Blues.
Stormy Monday which has always been a blues classic is very well done also.
The real find on this album is the 23 minute version of Whipping Post. This is one of the great live performances in history.
If you are a blues fan or better yet and Allman Brothers fan, you need to get this

5 out of 5 stars Wake up Momma. Turn your lamp down low.......2005-11-01

Just an unbelievable album for a couple of reasons. First of all, I think we can't lose track of the fact that 7-8 years earlier, DJ's in New York (not a small market) like Peter Tripp (guy went down with payola) and Murray the K were playing Freddy Cannon and Franki Valli. There was no southern rock 'n roll. There was barely rock 'n roll. So here we go with tremendous lyrics. Tremendous acoustics. Gritty vocals. And they're doing this in the face of "I want to hold your hand" and "Time is on my side."

I don't mean to denigrate the UK guys but wow, can you listen TODAY to "Statesboro Blues" and not still hyperventilate? How about "Whipping Post?"

Duane and Gregg were the real deal. And the second reason is that while Duane is missed the band, like all great bands, kept on moving. Dickie Betts was pretty good. Well OK, except for that Cher bit. What was that all about?

5 stars. Larry Scantlebury

5 out of 5 stars We are not worthy !.......2005-10-29

Words fail me,. . . almost. This is one of the ballsiest, bluseiest, rockingest albums ever. Duane Allman was a guitar GOD. At this point in his life Gregg Allman was the grittiest white blues singer I had ever heard. These tracks are pure gold and this maybe the BEST live album ever!
Every cut is good but Stateboro Blues still blows me away and I had never heard anything like Whipping Post before or still to this day. This was the band at it's best and sadly it never came close again.

Amazon.com essential recording

Lynyrd Skynyrd had already fulfilled a good deal of its promise on definitive Southern-rock albums such as Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd and the live One More From the Road when they stepped up their ambition a few more notches for this October 1977 release. Fueled by new member Steve Gaines, the Florida band produced its best album. Gaines, Gary Rossington, and Allen Collins interlocked on guitars as if they'd learned it all in the womb together, while singer Ronnie Van Zant came up with his most evocative lyrics yet. The shadow of death he detected on "That Smell" was closer than perhaps even he thought, however: three days after the record's appearance in stores, he was killed along with five others in a Mississippi crash of the group's tour plane. Street Survivors remains as a classic of American guitar rock. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I still miss em.......2004-10-24

The best album of the best band of all time.
The harmony that Steve Gaines and Ronnie Van Zant
put together in You Got that Right is spine tingling.
I saw the band in 1976 with Yes, Peter Frampton, Gary
Wright, and 70,00 screaming people. I went mostly to
see Peter Frampton but came out loving Lynyrd Skynyrd.
One only wonders what could have been since they were
just entering the prime of their music careers.

4 out of 5 stars Survivors of the Street.......2004-08-27

Just after this album is prepared Ronnie Van Zant dies in a plane crash with 3 other band members. What's Your Name? is the first mediocre track. That Smell is one of the best songs of this last masterpiece album of the Skynyrd. After the accident clashing with the issuing of this album the band was torn apart. I Know a Little is a fast one, listen to it. There is a Merle Haggard cover Honky Tonk Night Time Man [Bakersfield Country].

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as many of these reviews suggest.......2004-04-03

Wow - slightly overrated album here. Due to the overly glowing reviews I felt compelled to write one myself. Firt off, while it is a very strong skynyrd album, it does not deserve 5 stars. How about 4? I listened to Nuthin' Fancy and that is a decidedly better album with better songs and a superior sound quality. I like Skynyrd better when they had Ed King instead of Steve Gaines. Don't get me wrong, Gaines is a fantastic player but Nuthin' Fancy is a better "band" album and Gaines tries too hard to purposely outplay Rossington and Collins. But that is understandable considering he literally joined the band off of the street (back-up singer's brother), and he undoubtably was the best guitarist in the group. I believe most talented people probably would have done the same, given the opportunity. He also sings lead on songs and that takes away from the value of having a Van Zant and it seems slightly egotistical on Gaines' part. One may argue that he was expected to showcase his talents, as well as the other members. That's fine but remember, there is a difference between showcase and showboat. First and foremost, Lynyrd Skynyrd was a cohesive band, and secondly, a band that showcased it's members talents. That being said, I must admit his vocal in the song You Got That Right is right on - a true Virgo perfectionist.

However, when things are too perfect in music, it sounds too technical (guitar playing too) and somewhat lacks feeling, that's just my opinion. But again, you must cut some slack here, it was his very appearance with the band on a studio album. It was literally his oppurtunity of his lifetime, he would be the first one to tell you that. But, you can't really take away a guy's effort who obviously was just trying his best. I just think it negatively effected the band and most likely gave the other mates a feeling that this new guy was trying to steal the whole show. You can literally hear it in the music. Maybe they liked it or encouraged it, but I doubt it. These are just personal observations and not really why I'm giving it 4 stars.

The bottom line is that this is a four star album because a couple of songs are noticeably forgettable and plain: I never Dreamed and Ain't No Good Life, although the latter is where Gaines "shows off" his high range vocals, again trying to out-do his band mates. Not really a true critisizm since most everybody else would have done the same thing possessing the enormous talents he held. But it just feels like it lessens the value of having a complete band unity and harmony as well as agreement in feeling/musicianship which, by the way, oozes out of Nuthin' Fancy.

Still a very strong album and I recommend it. Strongest tracks are One More Time, You Got That Right, That Smell, and I Know A Little. Pick it up along with Nuthin' Fancy.

5 out of 5 stars You Never Get To The Bottom Here.......2002-09-09

The heading on this review says it best. The album's centerpiece is the anti-addiction song "That Smell", but other great ones abound here. "What's Your Name" and "You Got That Right" show that Ronnie Van Zant had regained his rock & roll spirit thanks to the addition of guitarist Steve Gaines on ONE MORE FROM THE ROAD, whereas "One More Time" and "I Know A Little" are classic deceit-and-betrayal stories and "I Never Dreamed" speaks of the importance of real relationships with people. The surviving members' advocacies of sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist, capital punishment for kidnappers, increased funding for law enforcement, and major federal crackdowns on polygamy, schools and programs afilliated with Scientology (e.g. Mace-Kingsley Ranch), and privately-run "boot camps" for troubled youth make STREET SURVIVORS or any Skynyrd CD/cassette an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

5 out of 5 stars Skynyrd's roots really shine here.......2002-04-27

The primary change to the Skynyrd lineup on this album is the addition of guitarist Steve "Roy" Gaines, taking the spot left by Ed King after Nuthin' Fancy. Gaine's playing shows a lot of country swing influences, he was a real picker. His playing adds a fine gloss to Skynyrd's sound when combined with Rossington's smokey blues/rock and slide and Allen Collin's blues laced arena rock energy. When you put these three guys together you're in trouble if you're expecting anything other than full blown southern fried music. Steve Gaines sings Ain't no Good Life. His vocals aren't on par with Ronnie Van Zant's, which makes this the weakest track, if there is one. But it's inclusion shows the guys really enjoyed having Gaines in the band. That Smell is the track that sounds most like earlier Skynyrd, and it was the big hit of this record, along with What's Your Name, which has a great understated rhythm guitar feel. I Know a Little (about love) is a high point; a fast, happy, danceable, country swing flavored song that showcases the guitar playing talent in this lineup. If there's a single place to throw in a tastefull guitar lick, they do it and they never miss. And check out Honky Tonk Night Time Man too. This album is so filled with southern influence that you expect sweet mollasses to start running from your speakers; country blues, swing, Dobro, slide, barrelhouse piano, you name it. For the aspiring guitar player wanting to learn about southern style pickin' and songwriting this is a high water mark. Then just TRY and track down all the guys Gaines, Rossington, Collins, Van Zant and the rest listened to.
