When alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley culled together this quartet, he grabbed three champions from seemingly disparate schools to complement his flinty solos: Miles Davis, the king of cool; Art Blakey, the thundering force of hard bop; Hank Jones, a veteran of swing; and Sam Jones, a versatile bassist adaptable to nearly any setting. The results are one of Blue Note's most beloved albums. The open-ended beauty of "Autumn Leaves," which features Davis beautifully stating the melody on muted trumpet, sounds like it could easily be an outtake from Kind of Blue (which it isn't). Not as energetic as my other favorite bebop pieces, but still very engaging, great solos. A *very* solid jazz album if there ever was one. Highly recommended.

It's Something Spectacular! Six Stars!.......2007-05-05

This is simply one of those amazing recordings that just about everyone can agree on labeling a CLASSIC. And if any jazz recording truly deserves this description, it's "Somethin' Else". It is my second favorite jazz album of all-time (right behind "Kind of Blue"). The way Miles and Cannonball play off of each other is truly somethin' special. It's like watching an old William Powell - Myrna Loy movie, or Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen play basketball, two artists who seem to not only know the other like the back of their hand, but also seem to be able to feed off of one another, not so much in a competitive way, but more of a playful, venerating one. The result for us of course, is magical! This classic is a perfect example of why art is so important in today's society. I can be having the absolute worst day of my life, however as soon as I come home and turn a CD like this one on it's almost as if my troubles seem to vanish within minutes. Try to it sometime, and see if I am just throwing out b.s. hyperbole. If you are a jazz fan and this doesn't do it for you, then I don't know what to recommend besides maybe some wine or opium. It would be like a classic rock fan who doesn't like "Revolver" or "Dark Side of the Moon". You might get a few fickle jazz fans out there who prefer different cups of tea, but for the most part (as you can also see by the five-star Amazon rating) this one is a no-brainer as most jazz zealots will agree.

This album is just over 43 minutes of pure bliss. Everytime I play this one I enjoy it more than the time before. And what's really ironic is the fact that everytime I play it I think the opposite - that I am actually going to be sick of the CD by now because of the many times I've already played it. That Miles Davis sure had some kind of run during 1958 and 1959. Has anyone in the history of music (the Beatles included) contributed more in nearly a two year span than this man? Along with "Somethin' Else" and "Kind of Blue" there were also "Milestones", "Sketches of Spain", "Porgy and Bess", etc... Not too shabby to say the least.

So please, if you are new to jazz music, make this purchase right away. It's not just about Miles and Cannonball, the rest of the quintet, the outstanding rythm section - Art Blakey (drums), Sam Jones (bass), and Hank Jones (piano) - all give inspired performances. I have never heard Art Blakey so restrained, but it works to perfection on this recording and his performance was perfect for it's subtle, yet soft nature (yes, drums can actually sound serene). This one deserves to be in it's own category - 6 STAR REVIEW!

Silky Smooth Sounds for an Autumn Day!.......2006-10-04

I first acquired this album as a cassette and wore it out because I loved it so much. I'm happy to say that sound quality of the cd version is absolutely amazing and crystal clear. You'll feel like you're in the same room with these guys even though this timeless music was recorded nearly 50 years ago! As a jazz musician I know that "Autumn Leaves" has become a song the many people are frankly tired of, but this is the best version you'll ever hear. There is little doubt that Cannonball was the greatest alto sax player in jazz history, and certainly one of the most lyrical and explosive horn players in all of jazz during his lifetime. He shows his incredible range on the classic version of "Dancing in the Dark", taking his playing to unexpected heights. This is some of the most mellow and subtle playing you'll hear from Art Blakey on any record, but he is solid as ever and keeps the band moving right along. "One for Daddy-o" has a wonderful slow groove that works very well. The xtra track has also a very catchy melody. To put it bluntly, no jazz collection is complete without this cd. If I could only take 10 discs with me to a deserted island for the rest of my life this would probably be one of them!

"Allison Uncle" and "Rangoon".......2006-03-26

There are a few reissues of this absolutely great Cannonball Adderley recording. The first five cuts on all the reissues are the same 5 cuts that make up the original vinyl LP. A few of the reissued CD's have an additional sixth cut. The sixth cut was discovered by Blue Note and initially released in Japan in 1982 and given the name "Allison's Uncle" because Nat Adderley's daughter was born on the day it was recorded. Further research revealed that the mystery tune is a Hank Jones composition that the pianist recorded as "Rangoon" with the Gigi Gryce/Donald Byrd Jazz Lab quintet for a Jubilee label in August 1957. Therefore, please be advised that "Allison's Uncle" and "Rangoon" and the same exact cut, just with a different name for the same song. I got this info from the Rudy Van Gelder Edition footnotes by Bob Blumenthal. Tidbits like this are very important to me and thought it might be valuable to others as well.

Chuck Berry may have written the lyrical book of rock & roll, but Berry was nearly 30 when he scored his first hit. Eddie Cochran was the teenage embodiment of '50s rock--a guitar-playing James Dean/Elvis Presley-like rockabilly star who wrote his own teen-themed songs, many later covered by the likes of the Who and the Sex Pistols. This Razor & Tie anthology stands with the Legendary Masters album as the best U.S. compilation, repeating 15 tracks from the earlier collection and including such obscurities as the Cochran Brothers' "Tired and Sleepy." Unfortunately, there's no "Three Stars," but this is still a mighty fine sampler of prime output by a visionary artist who died three years into his recording career. --Bill Holdship

Unbelievably underrated and gone too soon........2007-06-07

This is a truly great CD, but there are far too few American made CD's available of Eddie Cochran. He was every bit as musically important and influential as many of the other early rockers; maybe more so. Like I said, this is a great CD, but it's really just an introduction to his music. He recorded so many more songs, and they are available on European reissues. Unfortunately, some of these CD's are hard to come by. Eddie is much more revered in Europe than in the U.S. All of his music should be available on domestic reissues. But if you like great guitar work and great rock'n'roll, then by all means get this.

A must have record for all you rock-a-billy music freaks. Can't help but wonder how bright Eddie's star might have shinned, if not for the car wreck that took him way to young. An excellent cd with all the great songs! He was Somethin' Else!

Eddie Cochran is the man. Rock & roll never got better. In Cochran, you will hear some of Elvis, some of Jerry Lee Lewis, some of Buddy Holly, some of Little Richard, but each of those greats was odd in his own way; Eddie Cochran is the center, towering above with his pure American blue-jeans and hot-rod ATTITUDE. Hear his brilliant little guitar innovations creating rock from country. Hear the constant humor and brash confidence that invented "cool." The incredible kids that created rock with that indendent moxie could only have been American. Cochran's own compositions and the songs he made his own are a treasure of US history - how the kids making out in the movie theater would not know what was on the screen, but they would stop to watch Bugs Bunny - how the country kids would park and gaze out at the "pale city lights" (yeah, before orange crime-lights came along)," etc. I lived rock & roll, and I always loved Summertime Blues, but I discovered the rest of Cochran late in life - and forever among my absolute top rock & roll favorites of all time are his Twenty-flight Rock, C'mon Everybody, My Way, Somethin' Else, Weekend, Nervous Breakdown, Jeannie Jeannie Jeannie, Hallelujah I Just Love Her So, Boll Weevil - more Cochran in the top tier than anyone else. Listen to Somethin' Else; get that attitude under your skin; then go out and make your dreams come true.

The real Elvis.......2006-09-29

Well, we all know about Elvis. The King. But Eddie Cochran inspired the next generation - from Blue Cheer's proto-metal hit "Summertime Blues," to "C'mon Everybody," to "Twenty Flight Rock." The latter was how Paul introduced himself to John in the Quarrymen. Punk bands in NYC covered "Nervous Breakdown" and "Something Else" throughout the '70's. Eddie was punk back when the word was only used by cops. From start to finish, Eddie delivers rockabilly rebellion and true rock & roll. His songs are classic. Had he not died at 22 who knows what else he would've created. The good die young, but the music lives on. Buy this collection - money well spent.

Good Collection of songs.......2005-10-15

Eddie Cochran rocks, This is a must have for any Rockabilly fan or any fan of Rock n Roll........The real stuff. It's too bad he had to die at such a young age, it would've been nice if he could've been around to make more great music, with songs like "Jeanie Jeanie Jeanie", "Somethin' Else", "Come on everybody", "Guybo", "Summertime Blues", "Twenty Flight Rock", and my personal favorite "Bolweevle" (don't know if thats spelled right, but its a really cool song).

This is an Enjoyable album from start to finish, this is the way rock n roll is supposed to sound.

I'd give this 4.5 stars if I could, as it's high quality music that needs to be heard, but a slight notch below perfect. City Of Angels, Stay All Night, Goodnight Moon, Mama Died, Memories, and Congratulations are all outstanding and leave you wanting to hear more from this band.

I recieved my cd today and the only bad thing I can say is that Hans hasn't included more original works. The whole cd is 10 stars!!! Buy this cd and you will NOT be disappointed AT ALL. Ofcourse "City of Angels" prompted me to purchase the cd. That song is so addicting and makes me smile everytime I hear it. My co-workers now know when I'm listening to it. The smile on my face. So many of the songs on this cd are addicting. And it's so refreshing to hear good "real" music again. If you like Dwight Yoakam, you will LOVE 10 City Run. If you've never heard them before- I say take a chance...I did and am loving every minute.

Decent sound...terrible copy protection.......2007-01-22

First, i don't know what that other reviewer is talking about. He made some kind of over-the-top comparison to this having bad, muddy sound quality. These tracks sound pretty good. No, the sound quality is not as good as something recorded today. Maybe to your ears, not as good as on your radio. But how can you compare a CD of Cochran now to what was on your radio 50 years ago??? That's completely anecdotal. Even 50 minutes between listens is too long to make an accurate quality comparison, let alone 50 years.

Remember, Cochran recorded in low-class studios in the mid/late '50s. All the vocals come through clean, as do all the instrumentation. It does distort slightly at the top end, but that's inherent in the original recordings. There's nothing you can do about that. If you try to mask it, you destroy the sound. This disc is fast, immediate, and in-your-face, with scorching guitar solos, and searing vocals. Be assured that the sound quality is what this music deserves.

But the downside...this will NOT WORK ON EVERY CD PLAYER. This disc has a special copy control encoding that doesn't allow it to play on many car steros, portable CD players, or computers (i.e., forget importing it to your ipod!) If you don't believe me, it says so RIGHT ON THE CASE. I don't have a car or a portable CD player, but i know it won't play on my Mac Mini. First disc in...oh thousands that wouldn't play. so, buyer beware!

Recording Quality Rips Off the Buyer AND Eddie Cochran.......2006-08-04

I'm old enough to have heard Eddie's records when they were hits played on the radio (AM, of course), and have always loved his music. But I must give this CD a rating of "1" because of the astonishingly poor quality of the recording; it sounds like the 6th copy someone made of a bootleg 8-track, and a cheap 8-track at that. The 'engineers' who made this recording somehow managed to reproduce a sound that is at once muddy, muffled, AND twangy. It's un-listenable, no matter how much you might like Eddie Cochran. I'm sorry I contributed to their making money by exploiting a great, pioneering Rock & Roller. Skip this dog, and maybe look for something of Eddie's that doesn't contain the one word that should have tipped me off, i.e., "[IMPORT]."

Great songwriting, great energy, great singing & shouting and great guitar playing... and far ahead of his time.

This is a superb collection and the best you can get on a single disc compilation of this unique artist!

This wondrously relaxed blowing session was recorded in 1958 when Julian "Cannonball" Adderley was a member of Miles Davis's group--the one that recorded Kind of Blue--and the date is as much the trumpeter's as it is the altoist's. Davis's voice is much in evidence, from the subdued fire of the ballads to the crackling flames of the title tune, while Adderley's creamy alto invokes earlier swing and blues masters as well as Charlie Parker. The ballads and long, medium-tempo blues are complemented superbly by the thoughtful voicings of pianist Hank Jones and the great rhythm section of bassist Sam Jones and Art Blakey, who distinguished every session they participated in together. While Davis's Columbia recordings of the period were often ambitious and groundbreaking music, this Blue Note date is a more casual masterpiece. --Stuart Broomer

all of the previous reviewers are EXACTLY RIGHT ON TIME! with their ascessments of this truly classic jazz album. one of the all-time great effort. this is the album that i would play when introducing this great art form to someone new to this music. this album was played at the village vanguardin n.y.c. back in the early seventies in between sets.

A True Classic.......2005-11-05

A friend of mine who's a jazz fanatic turned me on to this recording about twenty years ago, and it remains one of my favorite jazz albums from the late `50s. Recorded on one day in March 1958, this session brought together some of the greatest improvisers of jazz. Just a look at the names says virtually all that you need to know; Cannonball Adderley on alto sax, Miles Davis on trumpet, Hank Jones on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Art Blakey on drums. "Somethin' Else" finds all players in a relaxed mood, trading riffs on three standards, and (if you include the CD bonus track) three original numbers. The session is noteworthy not only because of the remarkable lineup, but because of the warmth that such disparate stylists were capable of generating. Their instinctive trade-offs are subtle and yet intricate, performed with a poise that that contradicts the energy permeating throughout each track. It is low-key and hot at the same time.
Adderley was in charge of this session, so the tracks here are accredited to him as bandleader, but they could just as easily have been credited to Miles. Davis plays a major role here, and in fact, he is credited with writing the title track. For all the world, "Somethin' Else" sounds like the missing link between Miles Davis' straightforward Prestige recordings and his later, ambitious material for Columbia. Any fan of quality jazz music should put this album on their short list of things to own. A Tom Ryan

An incredible classic jazz album.......2005-08-12

It's all been said before, but I still feel that this is perhaps one of the more underrated of the classic jazz albums, much like Cannonball Adderley is the most underrated sax player in jazz history. I'd put him up there with Trane, Bird, and Sonny Rollins.

Miles Davis' sound is all over this session, and with the familiar combination of Miles and Cannonball, this feels very much like one of the classic Miles quintet/sextet albums. The important difference here is that without Coltrane's titanic presence, Cannonball gets to shine even more. The ballad "Dancing In The Dark" might be the most beautiful alto solo I've ever heard. Also, on the up tempo cuts, the rhythm section of Art Blakey and Sam Jones swings so hard, you might strain your neck muscles to the groove.
