It's fair to assume that if you're a Seal fan, you prefer your pop shot through with substance. Using that as a guiding principle, you'll want to glide right into Best: 1991-2004 where you will encounter, throughout two discs and 27 songs, scarcely a second of musical fluff. All the expected goosebump-raisers come on disc one--"Don't Cry" follows "Prayer for the Dying" follows "Kiss from a Rose" follows "Crazy"--and they're interspersed with deeper cuts from Seal IV such as "Get It Together" and "Loves Divine" as well as a couple of covers that, in a lesser vocalist's hands, might have been catastrophic. Seal plays it subtle and sweet and Burt Bacharach's "Walk on By," sidestepping any instinct to belt, and the help he gets from Mikey Dread on Echo & the Bunnymen's "Lips Like Sugar" settles the song into a snazzified reggae-pop celebration. (Also included is Seal's soaring cover of Steve Miller's "Fly Like an Eagle," which proved his prowess as a cover artist with its chart success). Though "best" collections aren't normally upheld for their surprise elements--nobody likes a package that challenges with armloads of new stuff--disc two pulls off a neat stunt. It's a complete acoustic album, again encompassing the major radio hits but stretching to include tracks like the impossibly tender "Touch" and the meltingly gorgeous "Colour." Their unplugged presentation, with the artist on guitar, sets an up-close-and-personal tone that suits Seal. More to the point, it suits his fans, who'll take all the intimacy with the singer-slash-heartthrob they can get. --Tammy La Gorce

But there's even more-along with the single-CD edition, with original album versions of 12 of his hits and best-loved tracks plus a cover song newly recorded by Seal ("Walk on By"), a double-CD package adds a disc of newly recorded acoustic versions of nine of those cuts (and four others). 5 out of 5 stars I love this music!.......2007-07-20

I'm usually buy only R&B, but I decided to try a different type of an artist. I love listening to Seal! His style is cool, unique and very sexy. Definately a Seal fan!

5 out of 5 stars I love love love this guy! .......2007-03-16

This album is one I can play over and over and not get tired of. His music is fun, inspirational, romantic and just beautiful. Highly recommended for those who just want to relax and comtemplate things with a nice sound in background, or turned up loud, it makes you smile and want to dance.

5 out of 5 stars Seal it with a Kiss.......2007-03-11

Nobody does it better. All of Seal's greatest hits in ONE CD. Does it get any better than that?

4 out of 5 stars "Greatest Hits" album could have been "greater".......2007-03-08

I would consider myself among the top 31 (arbitrary number, of course) Seal fans in the known world, and this greatest hits album is dynamic because it's Seal, but could have been better with a few missing songs. "Newborn Friend" is a lesser known hit to those who may not be as well-versed in Seal, and it definitely should have been included. It's one of his finest works and a far cry from "Kiss from a Rose" or "Crazy", his two most well-known hits. Also, a track or two extra from "Human Beings" would have been nice. I'm not sure why Seal seems hell bent on ignoring this album, which I still prefer over Seal IV, for some reason. He doesn't even seem to perform off of it much in concert. I could have done without "Lips Like Sugar", too. It just seems like filler. For what it's worth, though, the acoustic album that comes with the special edition of the greatest hits disc is stellar and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Now how about Seal V?

5 out of 5 stars essential seal.......2007-02-06

if you like Seal, this is a great compilation to add to your collection. always relaxing yet refreshing, I listen to this CD along with music by Sting, Sarah McLachlan, Phil Collins & Peter Gabriel for a nice afternoon of relaxation with my MMOs or RPGs like Sims2.

A far deeper, more enduring outing than his spectacular 1991 debut. Producer Trevor Horn calls on a cast of dozens (including Joni Mitchell who duets on the lovely "If I Could" and the ubiquitous Jeff Beck) and channels his famous, over-the-top tendencies into a sumptious bed of sound that makes Tears for Fears sound minimal. Soulful first single "Prayer for the Dying" will set the pace, while "Kiss From A Rose" is a huge ballad. --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't Get It Out of My Head.......2007-05-02

One morning last month, I woke up and couldn't get "Kiss From a Rose" out of my head. Two days later, I went out and bought it. I'm so mad I didn't get it when it first came out. I knew about Seal, and I heard his music, but I didn't own any of his music. Needless to say, I am currently purchasing his entire discography. My favorites: "Bring It On" get's me started in the morning. "Dreaming in Metaphors" really makes you think. Every cut is great outstanding!

5 out of 5 stars A heartfelt, emotional, and all-around wonderful album.......2006-09-16

I discovered Seal the same way that most people did: through his utterly beautiful song "Kiss From A Rose". I heard it on the radio one day, and played it constantly for months after that until I finally decided to purchase the album the song was from. As it happens, the song is from Seal's most revered album, his multi-platinum 1994 self-titled album. (This is not to be confused with his other self-titled album, his debut, released in 1991.) I didn't know what to expect when I bought the album, having heard only one song from it, but months after purchasing it I'm glad I made the gamble.

I think that the sub-genre which best classifies SEAL is urban. Urban music, according to All Music Guide, is smooth and polished, often romantic, sometimes uptempo and funky, and features soulful vocals. SEAL has all of this and more. It has techno beats, but they're not as overwhelming as one might expect. They blend together with peaceful, occasionally ethereal guitars and Seal's incredibly soothing singing. This is, no doubt, stylish music, but first and foremost it's a collection of warm, encouraging songs penned by a very talented musician. There's nothing that comes close to being a bad song here; there's not even a slightly weak composition. Thus it's a little harder to pick highlights than usual. Some highlights include the strong opening track, "Bring It On"; the emotional hit "Prayer For The Dying"; the shimmering "Dreaming In Metaphors"; the upbeat "Newborn Friend"; and, needless to say, the absolutely wonderful "Kiss From A Rose". The closing track, "Bring It On (Reprise)" is another beautiful song, but "Kiss From A Rose" is possibly the most lovely song I've ever heard. Listening to it in the warmth of one's home during a snowy December afternoon is an incredibly powerful experience.

The message of the album, if there is one, is "Keep on going - life is beautiful!" It could fail under any other popular artist, but Seal succeeds marvelously. This is some of the most heartfelt, inspirational singing I've ever heard. There's a delightful optimism in Seal's singing that sounds strong rather than naiive. It's hard to feel down after listening to such an uplifting album as this. Seal is certainly one of the most talented musicians of R&B (or rock - you decide). These songs have clear, strong messages, warm, inspirational lyrics, heartfelt, soothing singing, danceable beats, and a whole lot of emotion.

Once you've heard "Kiss From A Rose", I guarantee you'll want to pick up the album. If you're already thinking of doing so, then I encourage you to go forward and buy it; you won't regret it. It's become one of my favorite albums. When you're feeling disillusioned or depressed with the state of your life or just life in general, look no further than SEAL to make you cherish it once again.

5 out of 5 stars Its more then just "Knockin Boots" Music.......2006-04-29

Seals self titled release might immediatly get labeled Soft FM Hits radio or Bump N Grind (between the sheets) material, but it is much stronger then that. Seal takes soft Rock/RnB to the next level, and gives us a truely remarkable record, which is unheard of today because of overproduced and over-marketed albums. The muscianship on this CD is steller also, and you should know that this is all played with live musicians, no sampling or singing with a background beat machine. I can't reccomend this CD enough, as I think that no matter WHAT music we listen to, we need that CD in our collection to unwind us, and mellow us out. OF course I can name you many that I have for this, but Seal is one of my top choices. Its not to complicated, his voice is outstanding, and one again his backing musicians are some really talented artist. Every song (except one) is solid and that's why this is an easy 5 star effort..ENJOY

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2006-02-12

I first had this on tape when it first came out in 1994. I love it, its a great album and the best in my collection. Tape is obsolete now so I had to get it on CD. Seal is amazing because he spends a lot of time on his work and it shows. Kiss from a rose is the most famous song here, but there are three which are better in my opinion, Don't cry, Newborn friend and I'm alive. The rest are very good and I always listen to the whole album without skipping a single song and thats saying something. Its very easy to listen to, relaxing and soothing whatever mood you are in. If you truely love music and listen to this album with an open mind, you will love it. Better still its worth more than what you are gonna pay for it and will never sound outdated.

5 out of 5 stars More than ten years gone by... and still holding on strong.......2005-11-27

After more than a decade since its release, Seal's second album still retains that fiber that defines timeless musical works. His voice breathes life into 11 songs that blend the highest production values with lyrics that resonate today as strongly as they did back in 1994. For those who may recognize the album today for its biggest hit, "Kiss From A Rose", you may be surprised to find that this one along with the track that follows it, may actually be the 'weakest' spots in the album (if there is such a thing). Otherwise, all of "Seal 2" is a solid production that deserves a permanent spot in your musical collection, and perhaps Seal's best album to date.

After five years and one do-over later, Seal presents a fourth album that finds the singer growing with his audience. The disc's opener, "Get It Together," melds a quiet "live" moment into a horn-and-string disco number, setting the stage for the rest of the disc, which is largely a nod to Detroit- and Philly-R&B. The British-born musician pulls it off. His rasp and emotive, positive vocals are well suited for the retro stylings he attempts. "Waiting for You" will flood the dance floor, and he's unafraid to dig deep for the ballads--Marvin Gaye would approve. The funk is real, but saddled with a pop safety net, and the upbeat tracks need a helping hand from a good remixer before they are as compelling as his seminal singles "Killer" and "Crazy." Seal never goes all out in any direction and this coolness, combined with Trevor Horn's perfectionist production, plants the album inescapably in the realm of adult contemporary (although this is as good as adult contemporary gets). On "Let Me Roll" Seal salutes the album's influences by proclaiming he's "not too proud to beg." If that were actually true, the songs would have been that much better for it. --Beth Massa

4 out of 5 stars A shining, hip, well-crafted return.......2006-12-29

Seal took his time in releasing his fourth album. Reportedly, after the release of HUMAN BEING in 1998, Seal set to work on his fourth album; he had a whole album's worth of material, but he was unhappy with it and so he scrapped it. Instead, he began work on the second version of his fourth album, the version that was finally released: SEAL IV. It's a shining, hip, and well-crafted return for Seal. His longtime producer and friend Trevor Horn steers Seal in a different direction on this album, away from the ethereal techno-rock on Seal's previous albums and toward a more R&B sound influenced by the motown music of the 1960s. Fans needn't fret, though, because this is still unmistakably Seal. Horn does something else, too: he puts the focus on Seal's voice, which as anyone who's ever heard his music knows is a wise move.

Some of Seal's finest and most enjoyable songs are on this album. In typical Seal fashion, he opens the album with a song - in this case, the bouncy, upbeat "Get It Together" - and closes it with a reprise of that song. One of my favorite parts of the album is the arrangement of the songs, which is really great. We go from the light, soaring "Love's Divine" (which received a lot of airplay when it was released) to the heavy, thumping "Waiting For You" (another track highlight). "Let Me Roll" finds Seal strongly declaring "I'm not too proud to beg"; on the subsequent track, he sings about how much he misses the touch of his lover. Who but Seal could fluctuate from strong, pounding songs to dreamy, moving serenades with such ease? Seal takes a shot at reggae with "Where There's Gold", and "Heavenly ... (Good Feeling)" is one of Seal's most dazzling ballads. It's the following track that's my favorite, though: "Tinsel Town", an utterly gorgeous song, a composition eclipsed in beauty only by Seal's own "Kiss from a Rose".

Seal's songwriting isn't as superb as it was on his first two albums, but he gives each and every song 110% (it was his lack of effort that was the fatal flaw on his previous album). His voice is just as amazing as ever. The only thing that may turn some people away from SEAL IV is that it's easily his most tranquil album, though it definitely has its share of forceful tunes. It's also one of his most charming and sweet, however, and few are more charming or sweet than Seal. SEAL IV is a great album, and though it may not be Seal's finest achievement, it's more than enough incentive to eagerly anticipate his next album.

4 out of 5 stars Bueno, pero no es impactante.......2006-12-13

5 out of 5 stars Great ride to work........2006-03-12

I love this CD. Seal is a great singer, it makes the ride to work something to look forward to.

5 out of 5 stars A treat for the ears!.......2006-03-11

This is without doubt one of Seal's best works. He ranges from new age to raggae to blues seamlessly. One of my favorite purchases. I am well on my way to wearing this cd out.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Album.......2006-02-25

This is arguably Seal's best album! Strong vocals and varying tempos. This is the first Seal album where ALL the songs are great, rather than a select few.

5 out of 5 stars A truly wonderful debut by a truly wonderful man.......2006-12-28

I'll be frank: Seal is one of my favorite people in the world. I was introduced to him through his utterly gorgeous ballad "Kiss from a Rose", which inspired me to purchase SEAL [2]. Since then, I've been hooked. His music is trendy and hip, upliftingly dreamy and surreal, but also forceful and immensely inspiring. This guy is living proof that music doesn't have to be all "doom and gloom" to sell well - Seal's music is the most optimistic thing I've ever come across. And he's wonderful in real life too - courteous, humble, kind, and aware. All in all, he's a fantastic guy.

This fantastic guy burst onto the music scene in 1991 with his self-titled debut; because both of Seal's first two albums were self-titled, they have been nicknamed SEAL 1 and SEAL 2. SEAL 2 is the more serene, uplifting, ballad album; SEAL 1, the debut, is the super-danceable trip-hop album. The beats are definitely pounding and creative enough to attract attention, but two things seperate SEAL 1 from the rest of the many early-90s trip-hop albums: talent and heart. When I say "talent", I am of course referring to the magnificent Seal, whose singing is powerful and inspiring and whose musical craftsmanship is astounding. When I say "heart", I'm referring to the lyrics of the songs and the message of the album, as well as the incredible amount of effort put into the music. The message is love each other and enjoy life. Sounds like a sappy, pretentious dance CD, right? Well, that's the wonderful thing about Seal: he means it, and he'll have you singing with him by the end of the album.

SEAL 1 has a number of track highlights. The obvious selection is "Crazy", the megahit single that propelled Seal into stardom. Other highlights include the cascading, pounding "Killer"; bouncing, upbeat "The Beginning"; and the dreamy, ethereal closer "Violet", in which Seal channels Vangelis. Every song is a delight, though, if not because of their quality then because of the sheer amount of effort that Seal puts into them. Trevor Horn, who produces all of Seal's albums, clearly gave Seal room to be creative, though Seal doesn't seem quite as comfortable here as he does on his subsequent albums, especially SEAL 2, the man's masterpiece.

Some would still call SEAL 1 Seal's best record, and I can understand that completely. It definitely ranks right up there among the man's finest work, and that's saying something. If you're sick of all this dank, depressing "emo" music or just need a break from nihilistic rock, or even if - heaven forbid - you're in the mood to try something new, please, give SEAL a shot. I'm confident that you won't regret it - this is a truly wonderful debut by a truly wonderful man.

5 out of 5 stars Stupidly Crazy Awesome Good.......2006-03-28

I mean... Come on. This album is 15 years old. And it's still just amazing - it's a rare week when I don't listen to at least some part of it as part of my iPod mix. I don't know how to classify it - dance, R&B, whatever - but it really doesn't matter. It's great.

4 out of 5 stars seal.......2006-03-26

I love most of the songs but some sad ones. I recommend this CD for everyone to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Just one of those albums.......2005-07-06

There aren't too many albums that you can just listen to from start to finish, but this is one of those albums. Particularly the songs towards the end of the album, are just so laid back, this album is a journey, corny i know but true! I think this is his strongest piece of work to date, just the right blend of beautiful rhythm acoustic guitar and elements of that eighty's esque synth which i usually detest almost anywhere else except for this album. It must be special!!

2 out of 5 stars "Crazy" is amazing. Too bad the rest isn't.......2005-03-01

I recently caught the video for "Crazy" by Seal on VH1. After years of having heard this song on the radio and not knowing who it's by, I finally know. That song is amazing. As for the rest of the album, I can't say it has much of an identity to speak. of. Seal definitely has similar vibe to Sting (check out the vocal similarity on "The Beginning"), but "Crazy" is the ONLY good song on his debut. The rest of the songs are dull and have no hook. Buy the single instead. If you loved "Crazy" like I did, check out "House of Stone & Light" by Martin Page and "Just Another Day" by Jon Secada. They are both excellent songs that have an identical style to Seal's "Crazy." Who knows, you might even like these better than "Crazy."

Why is it that Seal's albums seem to be readily disposable at first listen but always prove to be more timeless than could be predicted? On Human Being, Seal's third release (and first with a title other than his name), several of the tracks are layered with prominent, syrupy strings, and his predictable vocal crescendos veer dangerously into the land of forgettable grocery-store-intercom adult contemporary. But hang in there; there's a lot more substance here than what will first reach your ear. This complex release is a little harder to categorize than his debut record (the dance album) or his second disc (the power-ballads album). The first two tracks hint that--oh, no--it's going to be another late-'90s trip-hop album, but thankfully, Seal doesn't go there. Listen a couple of times--you'll hear everything from orchestral swells to tinny rhythm guitar, experimental keyboard effects to late-night jazz piano accompanying Seal's standard "Can't we all just get along?" lyrical message. These tracks are heavily produced and thickly layered but at the same time his most intimate and personal songs to date. The album's cover art is a good metaphor for its mood: Seal is naked and crouched over--cowering or ready to strike? So, too, the songs lash out, then plead, then sting, then soothe. Start counting; this album has a long shelf life. --Beth Bessmer

5 out of 5 stars Ignore the critics...this is a jewel.......2007-01-17

Though his least successful commercial album, this is his most original, personal, and daring album. It was hurt by lack of a radio hit, but from beginning to end, this album is a true work of art. At the time he made it, this was Seal's favorite album. This is an album to be savored from beginning to end. A little darker, deeper, and more reflective than his previous albums, it shines as a collection of songs for those that are willing to dig a little deeper for good music. My favorite Seal album by far, and I like all of his work.

4 out of 5 stars A little uninspired, but a beautiful, soothing album nonetheless.......2006-12-28

I must admit I'm a little surprised by the almost scathingly harsh critical reaction to Seal's third album, HUMAN BEING. (At the moment, it's the only one of Seal's albums not to be self-titled.) The primarily-negative reviews for the album left me expecting little, which may be why the album blew me away when I first listened to it. HUMAN BEING isn't Seal's finest work (his previous album, SEAL 2, holds that distinction), but that doesn't mean that it's not a great album on its own.

The one fatal flaw of the album is that, for the first and only time in his career, Seal doesn't sound like he's giving it 100%. Maybe 95%, but for we picky Seal enthusiasts, that's not good enough. The songs don't seem to just flow from his heart like those on his earlier albums. Don't get me wrong: the album isn't bland, and there's still enough drive in Seal's voice to keep the album going until the end, but it lacks the refreshing quality of SEAL 1 and 2, both of which felt like breaths of fresh air. HUMAN BEING still has its share of gems, though, like the beautiful, comforting title track, which in the same classy fashion as on SEAL 2 is repeated at the end of the album in the form of a reprise. "State of Grace" has a sort of troubled tranquility to it, which makes it a delight, and "Latest Craze" glitters like few of Seal's other compositions do. The reassuring ballad "Just Like You Said" is another of the album's finer moments, as is the longing "No Easy Way" and the dance-worthy "Excerpt From".

Do yourself a favor and disregard the many opinions floating around about this album and simply listen to it yourself. In my opinion, it's not as good as SEAL 1 or SEAL 2, mainly just because Seal at times sounds a little uninspired, but HUMAN BEING is a beautiful, soothing album nonetheless.

3 out of 5 stars A distant third best Seal album.......2006-06-04

"Human Being" pales as a whole, when compared to Seal's first two albums. The album starts off with two left feet, it seems, and doesn't seem to get things going in classic Seal style until "Excerpt From" and the tracks that follow it.

By the time you reach "No Easy Way" (the absolute gem on this album) you wonder if there would be any reason to listen to the first few tracks again. In the end, it lands a comfortable third spot in Seal's discography, not only chronologically but in terms of quality too.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-03-24

Possibly one of Seal's best albums. Whether with friends or alone, I often find myself sitting back with a glass of something in my hand, and just listening. Since purchasing this album, this has become my favorite method of relaxing.

It's also quite nice to listen to when a date comes over.

5 out of 5 stars Another classic from Seal.......2006-02-12

Wow, Seal has done it again. This is a very mellow album by his standards but it great nontheless. I agree with a lot of reviewers who wrote you have to listen to it several times before you realise you have a gem in your hands. It may not have sold well but am glad I have a copy and in my view its priceless. This is music at its best, easy to listen to and a couple of the songs would leave you mesmerized or in a trance like state. My favourite songs in here include Colour, Just like you said, state of grace, Human beings and lost my faith. This is great stuff and I highly recommend it. Can't wait for his next album.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Value.......2007-06-08

This 2-disc CD from Seal is wonderful. I love having the choice between orchestrated and acoustic selections. I didn't know too much about Seal until I heard his Kiss From a Rose song. I was hooked. I bought the CD and suprise, I recognized every song on it! I just never knew who performed them until I bought the CD. If you're a Seal fan, you need this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Good inspirational listening.......2007-03-08

If you like Seal's music, this is a definite "must have." I purchased it, because I didn't want all of his individual albums, yet wanted to be able to listen to his greatest hits and follow along. It's one of those CDs you pop in the car when you've had a stressful day, and after listening to a few songs, you are reenergized, revitalized, and uplifted.

5 out of 5 stars Golden Collection.......2006-02-23

This is a great collection of his greatest hits. I have found that I enjoy listening to this album all the time. I hope you enjoy it like I do.

3 out of 5 stars Frustrating.......2005-09-10

Best of albums are almost always a way for a record company to earn some quick bucks because the cost of producing them is practically nothing. In this case Warner Brothers adds a 2nd disk with new material, but for the price of a 2nd albumn. If you're a Seal fan you already have most of disk 1 so you'e paying a steep premium for everything else. That said, the 2nd disk is what is most disappointing. Yes, it's new versions of some great Seal songs and if you're a Seal fan you'll want them, but after comparing it to the truly accoustic Seal: The Accoustic Session, these versions seem barely "accoustic" at all. As has been the problem with some of Seal's later work, overproduction buries his talent in blanket of technically well-done, but marginally meaningful sound. What made Seal popular and famous is the passion and emotion of his voice. That should be front and center in an "accoustic" album. For whatever reasons Trevor Horn keeps complicating what should be simple and powerful.
At least get the version with the DVD audio. As I said, this release is technically well done and that's the best way to appreciate it.

4 out of 5 stars Good Collection.......2005-08-21

If you're into Seal, I'd recommend this collection to ya'. It's well rounded and an easy listen.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best Pentangle album.......2007-04-04

I bought this album in 1972. I was (and still am) a big fan of Pentangle, Bert Jansch, John Renbourn and Danny Thompson. I saw them live in 1971. I thought back then that Solomon's seal was their best album, although most critics thought the opposite. After 35 years I still think it is their best, most inspired and most mature album. A classic, no doubt.

4 out of 5 stars Lost and Found.......2005-06-01

The Pentangle was an interesting mix of jazz, rock and folk music that had an almost Renisance period sound. Many of the songs they perform on this album are "traditional" folk songs. Interestingly, I got my first copy of the album from a top 40 radio station in Philadelphia. Times have changed.

While I am not particularly a fan of folk music, I always enjoyed this album because of its musical complexities and unusual style. My parents threw out my original copy after I graduated from college. For many years, I searched for this album on CD, but could not find it. Apparently, the master tapes had been lost. Luckily, several years ago I was able to find it on an extremely good piece of vinyl which appeard to have been virtually unplayed, and then "burned" it to CD. Now, they have finally released it on CD.

The Pentangle was formed by respected folk guitarists John Renbourn and Bert Jansch in the late '60s, and relies on the complex interplay of their usually accoustic axes. (The band was formed during a time that James Taylor called the "great folk music scare of the late '60s.") The band features hauntingly pure vocals by the talented Jacqui McShee. This was the sixth and final album by the original Pentangle band members. The album is roughly evenly divided between "traditional" folk songs and compositions by the band. The Pentangle does some "experimentation" using electric guitars and sitar. I highly recommend The Pentangle's first album, which is much jazzier, or Basket of Light on DVD-Audio. In my opinion, this album is not as good as as either of the other two albums, but still contains some fine traditional folk music and is worth having in a folk collection.

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY!!!.......2005-01-26

I have been waiting for this music to become available again for....25 years?? My vinyl album wore out long ago but I have never forgotten the music -- it is truly in the "love it forever" category -- Willie O'Winsbury, Snows, Sally Free and Easy...Jacqui and Bert are brilliant. I am so happy to be able to hear/buy this again -- I'll be ordering several copies!

5 out of 5 stars Jacqui Jacqui Jacqui .......2004-09-19

Try the Cherry Tree Carol and Willy O'Winsbury-the purest traditional voice ever-a nightingale pales...
Try this on a full moon snowy evening....

5 out of 5 stars Great Pentangle.......2003-12-16

This is IMO a 'shouldn't miss' Pentangle album. It's true
it's not as 'jazz exploratory' as some of their early ones
(also all great-- SWEET CHILD is maybe my favorite folk album ever). It continues & in some ways intensifies the 'Appalachian' aspects of REFLECTION, but with slightly rawer sound (well, for Pentangle) & Bert Jansch is featured a bit more here. Jacqui MacShee's singing is terrific too. REFLECTION should also be rereleased-- but this is very welcome after 30 years of oblivion. Only minus-- I wish they'd added some 'alt. takes' or 'archival stuff' as album IS short. Don't be discouraged by some comments/reviews that the group was 'tired out' by this point--true they broke up soon after, but this has great energy I think.

5 out of 5 stars Remarquable audio quality in 5.1.......2007-05-07

I have recently upgraded my hifi system with high end (expensive) audio components (speakers, amp, pre-amp, ...) and I am looking for the best recording available is DTS or Digital 5.1.
This Seal CD is remarkable in quality. One of the best sounding 5.1 recordings along with the latest Eagles.

5 out of 5 stars There's nothing like Seal.......2007-01-15

This is a great collection to hight all the high points of his career. I still recommend some of the albums, because each collection is a work unto itself. However, if you are looking to get the core essentials, this compilation will work perfectly.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing DVD-Audio !!.......2007-01-02

I bought this package to try out the DVD-Audio version in our Acura ELS Surround Sound System and it was AMAZING. I was skeptical of the car dealer hype, but the sound quality was unbelievable compared to the CD version. The DVD-Audio version is a masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent voice!.......2006-11-10

This guy can sing. I enjoyed all the songs of his that have been on the radio but the ones that weren't were kind of boring. The DVD that came with this package isn't worth the extra bucks plus they didn't include the "Kiss From a Rose" video.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it !!.......2005-08-25

This is an incredible CD. I have never heard "Walk on by" in a better mix. Seal is at his best. It is cool how these songs can be rediscovered and gets to be so enjoyable. If you like Seal, you will certainly appreciate this CD. I have particularly liked "Touch" and "Colour". The acoustic versions are awesome

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I love Seal!.......2007-06-26

I first fell in love with Seal years ago when I was in a mall and a store was playing Whirlpool on its muzak. I asked the guy who was that singing and he had to do some investigating for me. When he told me it was Seal, I immediately went to buy his CD. I was hooked! This live set by Seal is truly a joy to listen to. His vocal quality is unique, and very easy to listen to. I would also recommend any of his albums, especially his acoustic recordings. He is one of the most underrated vocalists out there today.

5 out of 5 stars Desert Island Stuff.......2007-02-18

Seal is one of those pleasantly rare musical artists who defies description by not having a genre. This combo release of CD and DVD is such a value and showcases just what a musical treasure Seal is. The Parisian audience stunned me on the DVD by remaining absolutely quiet during the performance of "Don't Cry". The one thing that has always escaped my understanding is lack of universal appeal of his work. So many less-talented singers who perform other's work are more popular, but their voices are not the instrument that Seal's is. He performs his own songs with mature, thoughtful lyrics and also musically interesting pieces he has written or co-written. Seal fans, this is a Desert Island piece for you, but the DVD with the DTS® soundtrack almost beats being at a concert.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet as a kiss from a rose.......2007-02-04

In Paris in 2004, Seal performed his first ever live concerts. The aptly-titled LIVE IN PARIS is a recording of one of those concerts. On LIVE IN PARIS, Seal performs most of his hits, including "Crazy", "Kiss from a Rose", "Love's Divine", and "Future Love Paradise". Seal's studio recordings are largely synthesized, so it's very interesting to hear him perform these songs live with actual musicians (and a talented bunch of musicians at that). The songs have a different sound to them, but the same wonderful feeling. There's a surprising amount of energy in this recording, both from the performers and the exuberant audience (which is remarkably courteous and remains silent through the actual songs, applauding wildly during the intervals between the songs). The songs are as charming as ever, and the recording as a whole is so sweet that it feels much like I'd imagine a kiss from a rose would feel.

There is more than just the CD recording in this package, though - it also includes a marvelous DVD recording of the concert that includes songs not on the CD. The DVD is very well-filmed, and with the surround mix it really feels like you're there at the concert with Seal. All in all, it's a delectable package and a great way to keep the hungry fan at bay while Seal records his next album.

5 out of 5 stars WITHOUT PEER.......2006-05-14

It seems like only yesterday that Seal swept into the scene with his self titled debut. This is probably his best release yet - a seamless DVD and Cd of great music. If you're new to Seal - it's a great place to start. If you're a fan - the other reviews say it all. A worthy release.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a live concert! And a great package deal, too........2006-01-11

I just received this for Christmas and had to come "in here" to see what others think of it. I have never written a review here before, but want to share my thoughts on this one.

I absolutely love it, like others are saying - very soulful performance, and great arrangements of the songs that I love so much, too. I'm surprised that the little intricacies and subtleties that make his studio work so rich are here - sounds much better than I expected from a live performance. I also applaud his choice to release a show done in a country where the audience has respect enough for the performers to BE QUIET DURING THE SONGS, except when appropriate; I swear you could hear a pin drop in moments of this show, very refreshing! I have been to many concerts in my 40 years (including 2 with Seal!) and love the experience, but have just about had enough of the rudeness of others while there . . . sorry for the tangent . . . Anyway, I have been a big fan of Seal's since the first time hearing "Crazy" in 1991, and so, was anxious to hear what blend of songs he would contribute here. Great selection, with my only disappointment being the absence of "Violet," from his first album - one of my personal favorites (I understand the show did have to end sometime, though).

Since you're reading this, you obviously have a bit of interest in this release, and Seal, and I don't see how you could possibly be dissapointed! Great CD/DVD value! Enjoy.

Album Description

Originally released in Spain in 2003, this very special version of The Album Leaf's Seal Beach EP is finally released in the United States! The Seal Beach EP on Better Looking features four songs from the original EP, plus "For Jonathan," which replaces an original. In addition, Jimmy LaValle has handpicked five live performances from his tour with Sigur Ros, included as bonus tracks - and it's all wrapped up in a beautiful digipack. The Album Leaf is Jimmy LaValle, a classically trained, prolific pianist and musician whose ambitious projects have involved San Diego's seminal ambient post-rock outfit Tristeza, noise punks The Locust and the gloomy, brooding epic-core Black Heart Procession. This special domestic release of the Seal Beach EP follows the recent success of The Album Leaf's critically acclaimed full-length In a Safe Place on Sub Pop Records.

Wake up to your best girl on the beach to this. Or in reality just wake to this killer disc. SOOOOO musical and so grovin 1200 watts cant describe it unless your there!!! Good buy!!!

1 out of 5 stars bland and unappetising.......2006-01-25

now I'm all for relaxing, warm music. there are times when I need music that is deceptively simple or even straightforwardly simple. and unchallenging. you know, it's the morning after, and you have to do paperwork.

but with the exception of possibly 1 or 2 songs, this is pretty much just a bore. barely pleasant wallpaper. but it's the barely pleasant which makes you nauseous after looking at it for more than a minute.

if you want quality pastoral post rock or chamber rock or whatever, check out Nudge, the Necks (the album Sex is an amazing starting point), or Town and Country.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, relaxing CD.......2005-09-13

This is my first experience with The Album Leaf after hearing the title track on the Echoes radio program.

Wonderful, peaceful, relaxing music. I'll definitely be buying more of their work.

I can't recommend this CD enough.

4 out of 5 stars today is the day.......2005-09-13

Restless by nature and anxious for the release of the new Sigur Ros - Takk CD I opted for an impulsive purchase to fit the mood of this melancholy, rainy day. Nothing could be more appropriate and dead center as the Seal Beach EP by The Album Leaf (2005 version) that has been reissued as a CD with 5 studio tracks and 5 unreleased live tracks recorded with Sigur Ros while on tour back in 2003.

In the post apocalyptic world of Hurricane Katrina and 4th anniversary of events surrounding 911 the whole post-rock, IMD indie-electronica thing seems more suited to this calm, retrospective listening. As I ponder the human dilemma and that future therein, the low-key songwriting with subtle dynamics coursing throughout, I get a sense of renewed hopefulness that somehow, someway we will get beyond this. There will still be a place of renewed emphasis and appreciation for beauty and art. The creative expression of pain and suffering will serve to heal wounds, extend ties that bind.

It's pouring out side and even if the waters rise to levels of intrusion I will end this day in a better place. In my mind and heart I have already traveled there. I lay listlessly on the sand, all worry taken out with the tides, and this music scores the sonic bliss, the soundtrack of today. Melodies soar as a seagull dives for some unseen treasure, and the waters lap at my feet, keeping meter and pace with these beautiful songs. Now that I hear, I almost feel I can touch this heaven - Seal Beach, the light on the other side of Dark City.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly.......2005-07-15

I love this cd. The tracks are beautiful. The live version of Essex is amazing, and was the main reason I purchased this. But everything on here is just beautiful. Total mood music. I recommend it.
