It's fair to assume that if you're a Seal fan, you prefer your pop shot through with substance. Using that as a guiding principle, you'll want to glide right into Best: 1991-2004 where you will encounter, throughout two discs and 27 songs, scarcely a second of musical fluff. All the expected goosebump-raisers come on disc one--"Don't Cry" follows "Prayer for the Dying" follows "Kiss from a Rose" follows "Crazy"--and they're interspersed with deeper cuts from Seal IV such as "Get It Together" and "Loves Divine" as well as a couple of covers that, in a lesser vocalist's hands, might have been catastrophic. Seal plays it subtle and sweet and Burt Bacharach's "Walk on By," sidestepping any instinct to belt, and the help he gets from Mikey Dread on Echo & the Bunnymen's "Lips Like Sugar" settles the song into a snazzified reggae-pop celebration. (Also included is Seal's soaring cover of Steve Miller's "Fly Like an Eagle," which proved his prowess as a cover artist with its chart success). Though "best" collections aren't normally upheld for their surprise elements--nobody likes a package that challenges with armloads of new stuff--disc two pulls off a neat stunt. It's a complete acoustic album, again encompassing the major radio hits but stretching to include tracks like the impossibly tender "Touch" and the meltingly gorgeous "Colour." Their unplugged presentation, with the artist on guitar, sets an up-close-and-personal tone that suits Seal. More to the point, it suits his fans, who'll take all the intimacy with the singer-slash-heartthrob they can get. --Tammy La GorceAlbum Description

A far deeper, more enduring outing than his spectacular 1991 debut. Producer Trevor Horn calls on a cast of dozens (including Joni Mitchell who duets on the lovely "If I Could" and the ubiquitous Jeff Beck) and channels his famous, over-the-top tendencies into a sumptious bed of sound that makes Tears for Fears sound minimal. Soulful first single "Prayer for the Dying" will set the pace, while "Kiss From A Rose" is a huge ballad. --Jeff BatemanCustomer Reviews:
Couldn't Get It Out of My Head.......2007-05-02
A heartfelt, emotional, and all-around wonderful album.......2006-09-16
I think that the sub-genre which best classifies SEAL is urban. Urban music, according to All Music Guide, is smooth and polished, often romantic, sometimes uptempo and funky, and features soulful vocals. SEAL has all of this and more. It has techno beats, but they're not as overwhelming as one might expect. They blend together with peaceful, occasionally ethereal guitars and Seal's incredibly soothing singing. This is, no doubt, stylish music, but first and foremost it's a collection of warm, encouraging songs penned by a very talented musician. There's nothing that comes close to being a bad song here; there's not even a slightly weak composition. Thus it's a little harder to pick highlights than usual. Some highlights include the strong opening track, "Bring It On"; the emotional hit "Prayer For The Dying"; the shimmering "Dreaming In Metaphors"; the upbeat "Newborn Friend"; and, needless to say, the absolutely wonderful "Kiss From A Rose". The closing track, "Bring It On (Reprise)" is another beautiful song, but "Kiss From A Rose" is possibly the most lovely song I've ever heard. Listening to it in the warmth of one's home during a snowy December afternoon is an incredibly powerful experience.
The message of the album, if there is one, is "Keep on going - life is beautiful!" It could fail under any other popular artist, but Seal succeeds marvelously. This is some of the most heartfelt, inspirational singing I've ever heard. There's a delightful optimism in Seal's singing that sounds strong rather than naiive. It's hard to feel down after listening to such an uplifting album as this. Seal is certainly one of the most talented musicians of R&B (or rock - you decide). These songs have clear, strong messages, warm, inspirational lyrics, heartfelt, soothing singing, danceable beats, and a whole lot of emotion.
Once you've heard "Kiss From A Rose", I guarantee you'll want to pick up the album. If you're already thinking of doing so, then I encourage you to go forward and buy it; you won't regret it. It's become one of my favorite albums. When you're feeling disillusioned or depressed with the state of your life or just life in general, look no further than SEAL to make you cherish it once again.

After five years and one do-over later, Seal presents a fourth album that finds the singer growing with his audience. The disc's opener, "Get It Together," melds a quiet "live" moment into a horn-and-string disco number, setting the stage for the rest of the disc, which is largely a nod to Detroit- and Philly-R&B. The British-born musician pulls it off. His rasp and emotive, positive vocals are well suited for the retro stylings he attempts. "Waiting for You" will flood the dance floor, and he's unafraid to dig deep for the ballads--Marvin Gaye would approve. The funk is real, but saddled with a pop safety net, and the upbeat tracks need a helping hand from a good remixer before they are as compelling as his seminal singles "Killer" and "Crazy." Seal never goes all out in any direction and this coolness, combined with Trevor Horn's perfectionist production, plants the album inescapably in the realm of adult contemporary (although this is as good as adult contemporary gets). On "Let Me Roll" Seal salutes the album's influences by proclaiming he's "not too proud to beg." If that were actually true, the songs would have been that much better for it. --Beth MassaAlbum Description
Seal's first album since 1998, and the third of his career to be self-titled, is the singer-songwriter's most sophisticated masterpiece to date. 12 tracks packaged in digipak format. Produced by Trevor Horn. Warner. 2003.Customer Reviews:
A shining, hip, well-crafted return.......2006-12-29
Some of Seal's finest and most enjoyable songs are on this album. In typical Seal fashion, he opens the album with a song - in this case, the bouncy, upbeat "Get It Together" - and closes it with a reprise of that song. One of my favorite parts of the album is the arrangement of the songs, which is really great. We go from the light, soaring "Love's Divine" (which received a lot of airplay when it was released) to the heavy, thumping "Waiting For You" (another track highlight). "Let Me Roll" finds Seal strongly declaring "I'm not too proud to beg"; on the subsequent track, he sings about how much he misses the touch of his lover. Who but Seal could fluctuate from strong, pounding songs to dreamy, moving serenades with such ease? Seal takes a shot at reggae with "Where There's Gold", and "Heavenly ... (Good Feeling)" is one of Seal's most dazzling ballads. It's the following track that's my favorite, though: "Tinsel Town", an utterly gorgeous song, a composition eclipsed in beauty only by Seal's own "Kiss from a Rose".
Seal's songwriting isn't as superb as it was on his first two albums, but he gives each and every song 110% (it was his lack of effort that was the fatal flaw on his previous album). His voice is just as amazing as ever. The only thing that may turn some people away from SEAL IV is that it's easily his most tranquil album, though it definitely has its share of forceful tunes. It's also one of his most charming and sweet, however, and few are more charming or sweet than Seal. SEAL IV is a great album, and though it may not be Seal's finest achievement, it's more than enough incentive to eagerly anticipate his next album.

A truly wonderful debut by a truly wonderful man.......2006-12-28
This fantastic guy burst onto the music scene in 1991 with his self-titled debut; because both of Seal's first two albums were self-titled, they have been nicknamed SEAL 1 and SEAL 2. SEAL 2 is the more serene, uplifting, ballad album; SEAL 1, the debut, is the super-danceable trip-hop album. The beats are definitely pounding and creative enough to attract attention, but two things seperate SEAL 1 from the rest of the many early-90s trip-hop albums: talent and heart. When I say "talent", I am of course referring to the magnificent Seal, whose singing is powerful and inspiring and whose musical craftsmanship is astounding. When I say "heart", I'm referring to the lyrics of the songs and the message of the album, as well as the incredible amount of effort put into the music. The message is love each other and enjoy life. Sounds like a sappy, pretentious dance CD, right? Well, that's the wonderful thing about Seal: he means it, and he'll have you singing with him by the end of the album.
SEAL 1 has a number of track highlights. The obvious selection is "Crazy", the megahit single that propelled Seal into stardom. Other highlights include the cascading, pounding "Killer"; bouncing, upbeat "The Beginning"; and the dreamy, ethereal closer "Violet", in which Seal channels Vangelis. Every song is a delight, though, if not because of their quality then because of the sheer amount of effort that Seal puts into them. Trevor Horn, who produces all of Seal's albums, clearly gave Seal room to be creative, though Seal doesn't seem quite as comfortable here as he does on his subsequent albums, especially SEAL 2, the man's masterpiece.
Some would still call SEAL 1 Seal's best record, and I can understand that completely. It definitely ranks right up there among the man's finest work, and that's saying something. If you're sick of all this dank, depressing "emo" music or just need a break from nihilistic rock, or even if - heaven forbid - you're in the mood to try something new, please, give SEAL a shot. I'm confident that you won't regret it - this is a truly wonderful debut by a truly wonderful man.

"Crazy" is amazing. Too bad the rest isn't.......2005-03-01
I recently caught the video for "Crazy" by Seal on VH1. After years of having heard this song on the radio and not knowing who it's by, I finally know. That song is amazing. As for the rest of the album, I can't say it has much of an identity to speak. of. Seal definitely has similar vibe to Sting (check out the vocal similarity on "The Beginning"), but "Crazy" is the ONLY good song on his debut. The rest of the songs are dull and have no hook. Buy the single instead. If you loved "Crazy" like I did, check out "House of Stone & Light" by Martin Page and "Just Another Day" by Jon Secada. They are both excellent songs that have an identical style to Seal's "Crazy." Who knows, you might even like these better than "Crazy."

Why is it that Seal's albums seem to be readily disposable at first listen but always prove to be more timeless than could be predicted? On Human Being, Seal's third release (and first with a title other than his name), several of the tracks are layered with prominent, syrupy strings, and his predictable vocal crescendos veer dangerously into the land of forgettable grocery-store-intercom adult contemporary. But hang in there; there's a lot more substance here than what will first reach your ear. This complex release is a little harder to categorize than his debut record (the dance album) or his second disc (the power-ballads album). The first two tracks hint that--oh, no--it's going to be another late-'90s trip-hop album, but thankfully, Seal doesn't go there. Listen a couple of times--you'll hear everything from orchestral swells to tinny rhythm guitar, experimental keyboard effects to late-night jazz piano accompanying Seal's standard "Can't we all just get along?" lyrical message. These tracks are heavily produced and thickly layered but at the same time his most intimate and personal songs to date. The album's cover art is a good metaphor for its mood: Seal is naked and crouched over--cowering or ready to strike? So, too, the songs lash out, then plead, then sting, then soothe. Start counting; this album has a long shelf life. --Beth BessmerAlbum Details

Ignore the critics...this is a jewel.......2007-01-17
A little uninspired, but a beautiful, soothing album nonetheless.......2006-12-28
The one fatal flaw of the album is that, for the first and only time in his career, Seal doesn't sound like he's giving it 100%. Maybe 95%, but for we picky Seal enthusiasts, that's not good enough. The songs don't seem to just flow from his heart like those on his earlier albums. Don't get me wrong: the album isn't bland, and there's still enough drive in Seal's voice to keep the album going until the end, but it lacks the refreshing quality of SEAL 1 and 2, both of which felt like breaths of fresh air. HUMAN BEING still has its share of gems, though, like the beautiful, comforting title track, which in the same classy fashion as on SEAL 2 is repeated at the end of the album in the form of a reprise. "State of Grace" has a sort of troubled tranquility to it, which makes it a delight, and "Latest Craze" glitters like few of Seal's other compositions do. The reassuring ballad "Just Like You Said" is another of the album's finer moments, as is the longing "No Easy Way" and the dance-worthy "Excerpt From".
Do yourself a favor and disregard the many opinions floating around about this album and simply listen to it yourself. In my opinion, it's not as good as SEAL 1 or SEAL 2, mainly just because Seal at times sounds a little uninspired, but HUMAN BEING is a beautiful, soothing album nonetheless.
A distant third best Seal album.......2006-06-04
By the time you reach "No Easy Way" (the absolute gem on this album) you wonder if there would be any reason to listen to the first few tracks again. In the end, it lands a comfortable third spot in Seal's discography, not only chronologically but in terms of quality too.
Excellent.......2006-03-24
It's also quite nice to listen to when a date comes over.
Another classic from Seal.......2006-02-12

Lost and Found.......2005-06-01
While I am not particularly a fan of folk music, I always enjoyed this album because of its musical complexities and unusual style. My parents threw out my original copy after I graduated from college. For many years, I searched for this album on CD, but could not find it. Apparently, the master tapes had been lost. Luckily, several years ago I was able to find it on an extremely good piece of vinyl which appeard to have been virtually unplayed, and then "burned" it to CD. Now, they have finally released it on CD.
The Pentangle was formed by respected folk guitarists John Renbourn and Bert Jansch in the late '60s, and relies on the complex interplay of their usually accoustic axes. (The band was formed during a time that James Taylor called the "great folk music scare of the late '60s.") The band features hauntingly pure vocals by the talented Jacqui McShee. This was the sixth and final album by the original Pentangle band members. The album is roughly evenly divided between "traditional" folk songs and compositions by the band. The Pentangle does some "experimentation" using electric guitars and sitar. I highly recommend The Pentangle's first album, which is much jazzier, or Basket of Light on DVD-Audio. In my opinion, this album is not as good as as either of the other two albums, but still contains some fine traditional folk music and is worth having in a folk collection.

Great Pentangle.......2003-12-16
it's not as 'jazz exploratory' as some of their early ones
(also all great-- SWEET CHILD is maybe my favorite folk album ever). It continues & in some ways intensifies the 'Appalachian' aspects of REFLECTION, but with slightly rawer sound (well, for Pentangle) & Bert Jansch is featured a bit more here. Jacqui MacShee's singing is terrific too. REFLECTION should also be rereleased-- but this is very welcome after 30 years of oblivion. Only minus-- I wish they'd added some 'alt. takes' or 'archival stuff' as album IS short. Don't be discouraged by some comments/reviews that the group was 'tired out' by this point--true they broke up soon after, but this has great energy I think.

Finally, a live concert! And a great package deal, too........2006-01-11
I absolutely love it, like others are saying - very soulful performance, and great arrangements of the songs that I love so much, too. I'm surprised that the little intricacies and subtleties that make his studio work so rich are here - sounds much better than I expected from a live performance. I also applaud his choice to release a show done in a country where the audience has respect enough for the performers to BE QUIET DURING THE SONGS, except when appropriate; I swear you could hear a pin drop in moments of this show, very refreshing! I have been to many concerts in my 40 years (including 2 with Seal!) and love the experience, but have just about had enough of the rudeness of others while there . . . sorry for the tangent . . . Anyway, I have been a big fan of Seal's since the first time hearing "Crazy" in 1991, and so, was anxious to hear what blend of songs he would contribute here. Great selection, with my only disappointment being the absence of "Violet," from his first album - one of my personal favorites (I understand the show did have to end sometime, though).
Since you're reading this, you obviously have a bit of interest in this release, and Seal, and I don't see how you could possibly be dissapointed! Great CD/DVD value! Enjoy.

Originally released in Spain in 2003, this very special version of The Album Leaf's Seal Beach EP is finally released in the United States! The Seal Beach EP on Better Looking features four songs from the original EP, plus "For Jonathan," which replaces an original. In addition, Jimmy LaValle has handpicked five live performances from his tour with Sigur Ros, included as bonus tracks - and it's all wrapped up in a beautiful digipack. The Album Leaf is Jimmy LaValle, a classically trained, prolific pianist and musician whose ambitious projects have involved San Diego's seminal ambient post-rock outfit Tristeza, noise punks The Locust and the gloomy, brooding epic-core Black Heart Procession. This special domestic release of the Seal Beach EP follows the recent success of The Album Leaf's critically acclaimed full-length In a Safe Place on Sub Pop Records.Customer Reviews:

As I ponder the human dilemma and that future therein, the low-key songwriting with subtle dynamics coursing throughout, I get a sense of renewed hopefulness that somehow, someway we will get beyond this. There will still be a place of renewed emphasis and appreciation for beauty and art. The creative expression of pain and suffering will serve to heal wounds, extend ties that bind.
It's pouring out side and even if the waters rise to levels of intrusion I will end this day in a better place. In my mind and heart I have already traveled there. I lay listlessly on the sand, all worry taken out with the tides, and this music scores the sonic bliss, the soundtrack of today. Melodies soar as a seagull dives for some unseen treasure, and the waters lap at my feet, keeping meter and pace with these beautiful songs. Now that I hear, I almost feel I can touch this heaven - Seal Beach, the light on the other side of Dark City.
