Editorial Reviews
Re-issue of this 1971 motion picture soundtrack. It shows precisely how much of a golden touch the Bee Gees had in the years 1967-1970 that even this soundtrack album, on which they participated in only the most limited way, is one of the prettiest records of their output. For starters, it marked the first official appearance of Barry Gibb's 'Morning of My Life (In the Morning)', a song (credited here as 'In the Morning') that he'd written four years earlier which the group had performed regularly in Australia and which had been offered to other artists, but had somehow never been recorded by them until this soundtrack. Coupled with conductor/arranger Richard Hewson's original orchestral material, and a pleasant if undistinguished original song called 'Working on It Night and Day' (featuring Barry Hewson on vocals), and oddities such as a group of elementary school students performing 'Spicks and Specks', the result is a very rewarding Bee Gees curio, and, thanks to 'In the Morning', one that is essential to any serious collection of their work. Every track on this CD contains a beautiful melody, many of them easily recognizable, all of them exuding tranquility. "O mio babbino caro" from Puccini's Gianni Schicchi opens the disc, with Bell delicately accompanied by a harp and spinning the long melody with great sensitivity. Bellini's "Casta diva" from Norma lives up to its reputation as the epitome of bel canto in Bell's hands; his violin sings. The middle movement of Mozart's 21st Piano Concerto takes well to the violin, and Debussy's "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair" is played with great warmth and sensuality. It would be easy to turn a recital like this into treacle, but Bell is wise enough to realize that the music is already sweet enough and he plays with great reserve and a minimum of sentimental slides. The light accompaniments always support, with woodwinds prominent but used with grace. This CD, in short, is a beauty: a fine gift, a lovely mood setter. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:

The music is excellent and worth the trouble of making a copy, but the publisher really shouldn't make you go to that effort just to listen to a CD that you paid for.

Some family music calls for cranking the volume and rocking out. Renee & Jeremy's calls for sitting cross-legged on the floor à la preschool circle time. Gentle is this pair's guiding principle--they will be your moon, as they sing on "Night Mantra," and as they prompt you, or your Cinderella-nightgown-clad 3-year-old, to close your eyes on "Falling Star Lullaby," they will kindly point out that love will always be there, and so will they ("let the rhythm remind you," goes the harmony). Reinforcement of this kind rarely comes in a package so palatable: Renee Stahl's voice is a lovely instrument that takes on shades of Cowboy Junkie Margo Timmons' at times, and Jeremy Toback's is rock-solid and frills-free. Together, they craft music that doesn't try too hard but measures up beautifully. --Tammy La GorceProduct Description
It all started with a simple idea, really: to rnake a CD of kids rnusic that adults could enjoy, not just tolerate a collection of original songs for parents who appreciate the likes of Jack Johnson, Nick Drake, and Aimee Mann. The result is a treasure chest of luminous harmonies and sophisticated lullabies that are unlike any children s rnusic you ve ever heard. It s A Big World is a thoughtful, nuanced, and long-overdue departure from the Wheels-On-The-Bus rut that children s rnusic generally veers into. These are songs by two gifted rnusicians (and parents) who understand the difference between sweet and saccharine - and who know their audience does, too. Most importantly, though, they are songs with heart. Everything from the writing to the recording was an earnest and intimate venture. The title track came to Jeremy Toback (guitar, vocals) on a walk with his 1-year-old son, Ezra - after wondering what life would be like through his eyes. And Renee Stahl (vocals) crafted her haunting and minimalist lullaby, Powder Blue, out of her own meditations on motherhood before becoming one herself. Committed to keeping the production as raw and personal as possible, Renee and Jeremy recorded the entire album in what would in a matter of weeks become the nursery for Renee s first daughter, Amelia. The duo vowed not to be afraid to let the odd minor key shade a little dark into the album s sunny canvas, and to have fun with their lyrics without straying from the underlying positive message. Through and through, Renee and Jeremy s genuine musical chemistry and uplifting energy is almost palpable. The album s most miraculous accomplishment is one that you will have to discover yourself: in the morning on your way to the office, or late at night, long after they ve gone to bed, you will find yourself slipping the CD into your stereo, alone this time, and you will sing along - and your eyes may get a bit teary, but they will never, ever be rolling. Jeremy Toback has released two critically acclaimed CDs on RCA, 1997 s Perfect Flux Thing and 1999 s Another True Fiction which yielded the radio hit, You Make Me Feel, before parting with the label in 2001. He is an original member of the band Brad along with Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam, and later went on to found his own record label for yoga music. Tracks from Renee Stahl s first CD, Melancholy Pop, have been featured on television series such as Roswell, Wonder- falls, and Party of Ave. Her latest release, Hopeful Romantic, will be distributed nationally by Barnes & Noble Booksellers. www.reneeandjeremymusic.comCustomer Reviews:

Album Description
He's been a) an underground metal mercenary, abetting the likes of brainy young upstarts From First to Last and He Is Legend, b) a fearless visual artist whose unsettling images will appear on his forthcoming CD, and most famously c) the chameleonic lead guitarist for Limp Bizkit, who have sold over 30 million records worldwide. Now, for Wes Borland's next trick, he's putting on the guise of frontman, leading both a studio and live supergroup to even darker depths as Black Light Burns. And the new look suits him well. Borland has flirted with his big post-LB breakthrough on and off over the last five years, first with the idiosyncratic Big Dumb Face, then with his brother Scott in Eat the Day before hooking up with bassist Danny Lohner (Nine Inch Nails) and drummer Josh Freese (A Perfect Circle) in proto-industrial powerhouse the Damning Well, whose crushing Underworld soundtrack contribution "Awakening" featured Richard Patrick (Filter, Army of Anyone) on vocals. Now Borland has taken Lohner, Freese and sound designer Josh Eustis (Telefon Tel Aviv) to super-producer Ross Robinson's upstart I AM: WOLFPACK label and delivered Black Light Burns' harrowing debut, Cruel Melody, 180 degrees from what you think you know about the eccentric axeman. From the post-Ramones surf rock freakout of opener "Mesopotamia" and the slow-build confessional spit of "I Have a Need" to the introspective, epic closing tandem "New Hunger" and "I Am Where It Takes Me" (the latter featuring the smoky siren call of Concrete Blonde's Johnette Napolitano), Cruel Melody is one hell of a curveball. "For the most part, [the record's] more about melody," Borland says. "It's a big drums record, because Josh Freese goes bananas. A lot of it was thought about in terms of beats and attacking the songs beatwise. And the riff kind of followed second to that, if it was appropriate. "The record starts real aggressively, but toward the middle it gets a little more hurtful and hurting, lyrically, trying to express painful feelings, but still in an aggressive way. Then it kind of opens up in the end. And that was the purpose: to attack, then explain, then release and be done with it." Cruel Melody was originally going to be an esoteric, dirge-heavy solo project with a variety of singers, but as Borland started writing heavier material, he finally decided to take the reins behind the mike. It didn't hurt that he got inspiration not only from Lohner, who doubled as the album's producer, but Lohner's famous former employer. "I was talking to Trent Reznor, playing him these tracks in their infancy," Borland remembers. "And he said, `You're singing like somebody's sleeping in the next room. You should try to open that up.' You know, it's really easy to do cool electronic music that's instrumental and put soft vocals over it, but it's a lot harder to write actual songs and have them hit people." With Cruel Melody locked and loaded, Borland's planning an evocative new onstage persona for Black Light's maiden voyage, boasting a live band with guitarist Nick Annis (Seether), drummer Marshal Kirpatric (Today Is the Day, the Esoteric) and, for now, a laptop to wreak ambient havoc. ("Screw it," he laughs, "there's a computer in the band.") In the interim, he's just striving to perfect his unique approach to making art. "The paintings and the music kind of chase one another, trying to keep up with some other third element that's the idea," Borland considers. "It's almost like when you see a little flash in the corner of your eye and you're not sure what it was. My music and visual art is me trying to look really fast to see what that third thing was. I'm always trying to hit this place that gives me some satisfaction."Customer Reviews:
Borland is back with a vengeance........2007-07-06
After toying with some side projects such as Big Dumb Face, which was actually a pretty good cd despite the obvious potty humor and outlandish themes, Borland has burst back on the scene with this new band.
Black Light Burns has talented musicians on board. Guys that were previously in Nine Inch Nails. On many songs, you can catch a NIN vibe, but although these guys are industrial, they incorporate many other heavy music styles to invent a new sound. There are sprinkles of classic LB-sounding riffs, there are elements of grunge, classic metal, and other genres.
The entire cd has blown me away, and it has quickly made it's way into my heavy cd rotation. Lots of variety, plenty of hooks, and Wes actually has a good voice for this kind of music. Check out the songs, "Lie" and "The Mark" and those should give you an idea of what to expect. Great album. I like it better than the new NIN.
Amazing,.......2007-07-02
Anyways, this album really shows off his strengths as a guitarist, and his often smart songwriting capabilities.
My only real complaint is that this isn't Big Dumb Face. BDF holds a special place in my heart, and it saddens me that we may never get another album from such a great project.
The melodies are indeed cruel.......2007-06-25
The vocals fit the style of music well - they're gritty, gloomy, and dark - although sometimes monotonous. At times Borland is Marilyn Manson-esque (but not sounding as deep or corpse-like), and at other times he is Trent Reznor-esque. As expected, he brings catchy riffs, along with a handful of solos which are carefully placed and not overdone. Drums and percussion both aggressively attack and calmly lull, and the programming adds electronic flavor. Give Wes Borland's Black Light Burns a chance, because you may be surprised with what a face-painted rocker can bring to the table.
Borland rocks.......2007-06-23
Fast forward to 2007 and I'm taking music less seriously now. It's just entertainment and it's stupid to be a snob and gauge intelligence based on what music someone listens to. I ended up buying the first three Bizkit albums and I like them alot.
I'm a Borland fan, not a Durst fan.
Black Light Burns "Cruel Melody" is pretty good. It has a lot of NIN influence,.. but Borland still works the awesome guitar riffage. It's strange to hear Borland singing,.. as I'm so used to him being the silent one who speaks with guitar. His vocals need to be pushed to the limits while on tour for him to grow in that department. His vocals aren't bad, they just need some exercise and flexing.
I can't wait for the next album.

Music for yoga is such a cliché that you could slap that moniker on a Barry Manilow CD and have it sold as a soundtrack for Downward Facing Dog pose. Yoga music has become a made-to-order commodity, and rarely attains the level of art. The title Music for Yoga and Other Joys doesn't bode well, but then, it has Jai Uttal, a veteran of world fusion going back 15 years and a devotee of kirtan singing teaming up with multi-instrumentalist Ben Leinbach for a series of extended improvisations. Leinbach creates a shifting back drop of chilled, Indian-derived grooves and textures like liquid mercury dipped in a fractal swirl. It's a perfect modal backdrop for Uttal, who improvises freely on an Indian stringed instrument called the dotar, electric guitar, and even banjo. Pieces like the 26-minute "Govinda" extend in a free fall until a rhythm loop drops in. Uttal swaps to a fuzzed out electric guitar solo that eventually merges into an improvised kirtan, his voice coiling in note-bending spirals like soul singing from the east. This may be music for yoga, but it's the other joys that will keep you coming back. --John DilibertoAlbum Description
Jai Uttalpremier world music composer and 2003 Grammy® nomineeoffers a moving mix of melody, rhythms, and chants with Music for Yoga and Other Joys. This solo recording is a fitting coda for Keith Jarrett's more restrained, less prolific output in the 1990s. The fitful vamps and long, ruminative improvisations that made Jarrett a solo piano star in the '70s are here either stillborn or tightly tethered to classic melodies from the likes of Gershwin and Ellington, yet there is not the slightest hint of repression. Instead, Jarrett sprinkles notes and brings the familiar strains of "I Loves You, Porgy" and "Someone to Watch over Me" to bloom with a dynamic but resonantly earth-toned vibrancy. Rarely has the pianist kept his music so simple and free of pageantry. Audible moans and shenanigans with the piano's sustain pedal are held to a minimum, and even brawny, sing-along stuff like "Shenandoah" and "My Wild Irish Rose" never lapse into sloppy sentimentality--indeed, Jarrett's two-handed caress of the latter song is so delicately self assured, the tune seems to play itself. Among the 10 tracks, only "I Got It Bad and That Ain't Good" finds the pianist stretching into busy (but still crisp) extended passages. Yes, there are moments when Melody's shimmering standards exude the glazed predictability of cocktail music in a hotel lobby. But those are far outnumbered by the cherished occasions when Jarrett's romanticism rings true. --Britt RobsonCustomer Reviews:

This album is just perfect a true Reggaeton Album.......2007-07-20
1- Zun Dada: Just awesome... it presents a wacky beat that is just perfectly made to blend with Zion's voice, it's a romantic song that mixes strings hi-hats and reggaeton 9/10
2- Abre La Puerta ... I don't really like that song it's just boring and it says the same thing over and over again 4/10
3- The Way She Moves... It's a good song that features Akon (he's everywhere :P), which presents a luring beat... but tends to be repetitive as well 7/10
4- Amor de Pobre... I just love this song... I think it's the best song of this entire album... it features Eddie Dee, and mixes reggaeton with vallenato in a perfect way.. that tells us about his willing to please his love even though he's poor 10/10
5-Oh Mami.... Yuck... i just hate it.. it's boring and it's like a 3 min+ whining by zion 1/10
6- Hagamos El Amor... Plain old boring... with a really really slow beat and dumb lyrics 2/10
7- Besame... Boring... the bases of this song are 3 words... 3/10
8-Your Body... Good duet featuring De la Ghetto (weird name).. which even though it has repetitive lyrics (her body is on fire), presents a cool beat that is original 7/10
9- Te Vas... It's a really slow song (nothing new... just a semi ballad that is just bad) 2/10
10- Cuarto Nivel..... It's a level of nothingness unknown for humans.. this song talks about how they're above everything and do things differently... 2/10
11- Money... a typical hip-hop with an r&b mix that talks about his richness.. and that people want to shine with him... 1/10
12- La Neta... I've never understood this song... it talks about something that's the end... but it mixes love... and weird lyrics about how cool the song is... but I really like the cumbia beat so... 8/10
13-Amor... A slow song that presents really good lyrics by Zion that tells us about what would he do with his loved one... 8/10
14- Periodico de Ayer... Weird song that presents us about how Zion dealt with the pain caused by his ex... 3/10
15-Fantasma... A cool song that tells us about Zion's misfortune with love... and that his girlfriend always worries him by coming and going, without telling him.... 7/10
Well at the end of the review I can say that Zion is one of the best romantic based reggaeton singers out there... that makes people know that reggaeton isn't just about being rich and cool and famous... and he presents us lyrics that we can all relate to.
Good cd.......2007-07-20

DG has put together a fascinating compilation of Segovia's art that reminds us what a protean figure he was. Segovia single-handedly put the instrument on the map by making classical guitar concerts popular events, broadening the instrument's repertory through commissions and transcriptions, and convincing even doubters that it could be a vehicle for serious music. He's heard here in brief pieces recorded between 1952 and 1969. Even in those made when he was well into his 70s, his fingers remain nimble and interpretations lively. Listening straight through, one hears many all-time Segovia favorites as Turina's Sevillana and Albeniz's Asturias and Zambra Granadina and renews appreciation for path-breaking composers like Castelnuovo-Tedesco. He wrote extensively for Segovia and his Capriccio diabolico and Tonadilla are pieces of real substance. Disc two is largely made up transcriptions and it's amazing how well so many of them work on the guitar, at least under Segovia's magic fingers. Thus the transformations of Bach's violin music and even a Chopin Prelude sound idiomatic, and the gorgeous melodies of the Canzonetta from Mendelssohn's Op. 12 String Quartet are irresistible here. An entrancing set. --Dan DavisCustomer Reviews:
A Man and His Art - Magnificently Captured.......2007-04-06
There are a total of 31 pieces played on these CDs and while a playlist would be an unnecessary use of space here, a list of the composers represented is not. More than the specific pieces Segovia gives us here, the range of composers chosen by the compilers and editors - with each piece rearranged by Segovia himself, tells us a great deal about his interests, talents and musical range. These composers include:
Isaac Albeniz, Johann Sebastian Bach, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Frederic Chopin, Claude Debussy, John Dowland, Manuel de Falla, Cesar Franke, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Edvard Grieg, George Frederic Handel, Felix Mendelsohn, Frederico Moreno Torroba, Modest Mussorgsky, Nicolo Paganini, Felipe Pedrell, Manuel Ponce, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Joaquin Rodrigo, Albert Roussel, Domenico Scarlatti, Alexander Scriabin, Segovia's own composition of Estudio sin luz, Fernando Sor, Francisco Tarrega, Joaquin Turina and Heitor Villa-Lobos. A truly magnificent and broad ranging collection held together by Segovia's unique personal style, approach and sound.
Largely self-taught, Andres Segovia did things with a guitar that others only imagined. He didn't just play Bach, for example - music written for an entirely different type of instrument (keyboards.) He went a step further, and recorder Bach's keyboard lessons written for his students (the Two and Three Part Inventions) and made them sound as if they had been written for the guitar! His artistry is evident to even the casual listener and in this collection, any devote of classical guitar and/or of Segovia as an individual artist, will not be disappointed.
Perfect listening for anytime. Hypnotic and, simply, unsurpassed. A necessary addition to any serious classical guitar collection.
