Peter Himmelman has a rubbery voice, a vivid imagination, an ear for quirky pop songs that sounds ripe for the picking by some brilliant kids' comedy troupe, and a complete lack of self-consciousness--a combination you don't often find in kids' performers, even the most successful ones. My Green Kite follows the just-for-the-fun-of-it formula of previous discs like My Fabulous Plum and My Best Friend is a Salamander--here's Himmelman contemplating how confounding a word "maybe" can be ("Maybe Is a Bad Word"), examining the under-appreciated qualities of an egg ("Have You Ever Really Looked at an Egg") and, in a half-poignant, half-hilarious number, deeply regretting his embarrassment over his dad's painfully boring occupation ("My Father's an Accountant"). The word for these songs is screwball--there's a certain loose genius lurking below the surface. As the soundtrack to a Sunday-afternoon Lego marathon, they're pretty near perfect. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Successful crossing over from East to West.......2007-07-06

Nowadays many classical musicians move to 'cross-overs' between Western classics to exotic works, and Chinese musicians and composers pioneer in cross-overs from Chinese music to Western.
Alas, not all attempts are successful. Either there has not been enough nurturing in the Chinese repertoire, or the western playing style has not yet been fully developed.
Ms. Yang is a young classical guitarist. Gathering from what she said in her own introduction to this disc, she is a musician with a great ambition. It is true that the classical guitar may not have a substantial repertoire as other western instruments like the violin and piano. Hence drawing materials from other culture in a guitarist's repertoire is both a necessity and an endeavour.
A guitarist from Beijing, Ms. Yang is familiar with classical Chinese instruments like the gu qin, the zheng and the pipa. These ancient Chinese instruments are like the guitar- all are played by plucking strings set on wooden surfaces. So as Ms Yang herself noted - the guitar originated from the Middle East, a 'cross-over' area of Eastern and Western culture.
In many of the modern works recorded in this disc, Ms Yang played the guitar to the effect of those ancient Chinese instruments, and this is quite stunning. Her familiarity with the Eastern musical style is fully demonstrated, adding the requisite flavour of authenticity to her interpretation. There are a number of great compositions of the gu qing, the zheng as well as the pipa, and I truly look forward to Ms Yang's transcriptions of those to the guitar in due course.
A highly recommended recording for guitar players, guitar lovers and Chinese music fans alike.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best solo guitar albums I have ever heard.......2006-10-06

One of the most original CDs I've ever heard. This CD is full of incredible music. Yang XueFei plays with sensitivity, creativity and passion.
When I played this CD for my guitar teacher, he commented that it was rare for him not to have heard at least one piece on any particular classical guitar CD, yet all these pieces were new to him. Carlo Domeniconi (who wrote the masterpiece "Koyunbaba") has composed an outstanding suite based on the I Ching. The 3 pieces by Stephen Goss, which are based on Asian films, are themselves cinematic: "The Blue Kite" is a work of minimalist beauty. There are many other talented composers lending their gifts to this CD. Most of the selections are either composed for Yang Xuefei or are arrangements by her. All are inspired by Chinese culture and music. My favorite piece is "Long Outstretched Pier with its Shadow" (by Dietmar Ungerrank); it is elegantly written and the execution is sensual and rich.
Yang XueFei's technical agility, especially the right hand, (as in "Yi Dance") goes beyond that of her contemporaries. As impressive as this is, the passion she imbues into each work is what connects her to the songs and ultimately to the audience. Technique is there to help her express what is inside of her. It is as if the guitar is her lover. This just isn't a great guitar album; it is a great album period. Its emotional complexity deepens with each listening. Buy it!
I've also purchased "Romance de Amor" which is extremely good as well (listen to her version of "Requerdos de la Alhambra" as compared to one of her heroes, John Williams on "The Guitarist"), but "Si Ji" is totally unique. Don't miss it.
As an aside, If you do end up buying and enjoying this CD, you might listen to Lily Afshar. The influence of her Persian heritage is similar in effect to "Si Ji" by Yang XueFei. Both artists have breathed life into the modern repertoire of guitar music.

5 out of 5 stars Virtuoso playing and an unusual repetoire.......2005-10-26

I am a classical guitar student, and an over-the-top consumer. So I have a lot (many dozens) of classical guitar CDs. They are for the most part quite good, but they tend to blend. I might be able to distinguish Tennant's Rodrigo or Barrueco's Scarlatti, but too many guitarists play an awful lot of the same repetoire, and they play it quite similarly.

This CD is quite different. The pieces are all Asian in flavor and by composers I had never heard of. And they are quite beautiful. Ms. Yang appears to be quite young, so this could be the start of a long and interesting career. But at least one of the pieces was written for her, so she has already apparently developed a solid reputation.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most unique metal bands ever.......2007-04-28

Acid Bath are one of the most creative metal bands ever. They play Louisiana style sludge metal. While I do enjoy bands like Crowbar and Eyehategod, Acid Bath tops them. Acid Bath isn't just a sludge metal band. They incorporate other influences as well. I hear death metal, grindcore, psychadelic rock, southern rock, and quite a few other things. The vocals range from tortured screams to deeper clean vocals. The guitarwork is filled with plenty of sludgy, heavy riffs, but the guitarists experiment quite a bit as well, playing some bluesy licks, jazzy interludes, and some unique solos(there's even acoustic solos!) The bass is nice, thick, and dirty. The drumming is quite good, playing some good fills. If you want a sludge metal album that is unique, or just a unique album, give this a shot!

5 out of 5 stars Debut of the South's finest metal band.......2007-03-01

Ever so now and then, a band comes along that really shakes things up and changes the way we listen to music. The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Nirvana, Metallica, and... Acid Bath?

OK, so not everyone has heard of these guys. Except for those of us in the faithful underground. Unfortunately, (or not!) some "would-be legendary" bands never achieve fame. Acid Bath is one of these bands.

This music is not for everyone. From the front cover featuring a painting by convicted serial murderer John Wayne Gacy to the chilling pulsing rythyms and dark poetry of "Scream of the Butterfly", this album does NOT pull any punches. It is dark, brooding, evil, poetic, raw, haunting and beautiful. Frontman Dax Riggs croons and screams from the deepest corners of his soul while Sammy Duet provides the torturous demonic wails that rip through many of the tracks. Every song on here is excellent, but the standouts aside from the aforementioned track are "Dr. Suess is Dead", the classic "Fingerpaintings of the Insane", "Jezebel", "Morticians Flame", "What Color is Death" and "Bones of Baby Dolls". If you have not heard this band and you are a fan of metal who can handle some dark subjects, you owe it to yourself to buy this album immediately. It is unfortunate that these guys only put out two studio albums in their short career, but they are both musical opuses.

    5 out of 5 stars perfection.......2006-12-28

A must have for anyone who is serious about music. SCREAM OF THE BUTTERFLY is hands down one of the best songs out there.

5 out of 5 stars The beginnings of Metalcore.......2006-12-10

This isn't an album you can categorize in a certain genre.Acid Bath transcend many genres of music (Psychadelic rock, Nola Death Metal and thrash)to bring you a cd that will influence rock and metal artists for generations to come. I was 16 years old when i first heard this cd. I am now 23 years of age and it rocks even harder than it did back then. Any of you metalcore kids want to hear where Killswitch got their breakdowns or Atreyu got their gothness from then listen to this cd.The coolest tracks are Jezebel, Scream of the Butterfly, Toubabo Koomi and God Machine. The only difference between this band and metal bands nowadays is this guy can actually carry a note which is a continuing problem with metal lately. Lamb of God is cool and all but Randy Blythe should really look into taking some singing lessons soon because he sucks.Anyways get this cd because it rocks.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite albums.......2006-11-03

This album just rocks. It can't be grouped in one genre, it really is across the board. Every genre that has already been mentioned is really present, from death to black to 70's rock to stoner to sludge to cajun etc. The lyrics are well thought out, and actually pretty disturbing if you listen to them. Not in a Cannibal Corpse, as much gore as possible sense, but in the sense of looking into the mind of a serial killer. The album cover is great, just like everything else. There's something on here for every mood. Take the opening of Cheap Vodka "With my last five/got a cheap fifth of vodka/gonna kill someone/noone's gonna stop us tonight". Just fun.

The highlights: The Blue, Finger Paintings of the Insane, Scream of the Butterfly, Doctor Suess is Dead, and Cassie Eats Cockroaches. I can't even quote a lot of the lyrics on here, but they are great throughout. Interesting musical techniques, too. My favorite: soft acoustic guitar combined with double-bass kicking on Scream of the Butterfly. Dax is one of the best vocalists out there. He goes from the clean, melancholy singing straight into a face-destroying scream, but whatever he does fits in with the music. All the instrumentalists are great: they fit in perfectly with the feel of the album. Nothing exceptional, but nothing bad at all. This album has nothing bad about it, really. I mean, sure, if you're obsessed with solos, there aren't a lot, but this isn't thrash. This album is pretty much perfect for what it is.

As a solo artist, she goes down the road of pop. Not my cup of tea but her collaborations with Johnny Marr definitely are good. She was never daring by herself as she was in picking(or being picked) those she did backup vocals for. The songs are enjoyable but get sappy rather quickly in tone if not lyrics. The latter is where you see a maverick side.

5 out of 5 stars The Late Great Kirsty MacColl.......2006-02-26

Before the Internet, before sampling stations at the major record chains, the only way to judge a cd was either a recommendation or by judging a book by its cover and just buying it and listening to it. I bought this cd when it first came out just because I liked the cover, and boy what a find. This is a great pop cd by an extremely talented artist whom we lost too soon. Soaring pop, some pseudo-country ("Don't Come the Cowboy"), plaintive ballads. Highlights are "The End of a Perfect Day," "Free World" (which zooms by at a breathtaking pace), "Innocence," "Tread Lightly," "Don't Come The Cowboy With Me Sonny Jim." Excellent and highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Soaring "Kite".......2005-12-19

    The Album:
Some rock fans have tended to accuse their favorite artists of becoming insufferable softies in the wake of marriage and parenthood, as if any perceived decline in the quality of the artist's music is blamed on the artist losing his or her mysteriousness and "cool," instead of on the listener's own inability to identify with the artist's new mental state. That said, singer-songwriter Kirsty MacColl made 1989's Kite -- only her second full-length album of all-new material to be released in her first 11 years as a recording artist -- after marrying record producer Steve Lillywhite in 1984 and then devoting the next few years to raising their two young sons... The former pub-rocker mostly works in Smiths-style Brit-pop here, except for detours into country (the weary-but-hopeful single "Don't Come the Cowboy With Me, Sonny Jim!") and jazz ("Fifteen Minutes"), and a sweet cover of the Kinks' "Days" (one of MacColl's biggest UK hits); HOWEVER, a look through the lyric sheet should assure you that becoming a wife and mum didn't turn Kirsty soft.

Kite kicks off with the 1-2 punch of "Innocence," a bouncy single packed with wickedly funny put-down lyrics ("Your pornographic priestess left you for another guy / You frighten little children and you always wonder why"), and the ferocious single "Free World," an attack on Margaret Thatcher's England. Other standouts include: "Fifteen Minutes," a wry comment on the crassness of fame ("In Sunday papers every week / The silly words you love to speak / The tacky photos and the phony smiles / Well, it's a bozo's world and you're a bozo's child ... Your 15 minutes start now"); its less-snide flip-side, the jangly "What Do Pretty Girls Do?", which ponders the plight of an It Girl once her 15 minutes are up and she can no longer coast on looks or popularity; "The End of a Perfect Day" (co-written with Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr), on which MacColl advises us that good times can't last forever; and "Tread Lightly," on which she warns us that getting what we wish for may not be all it's cracked up to be. To audiences who prefer blander and more sugar-coated sentiments in their pop music, many of Kirsty's lyrics here may seem extremely cynical, but I consider them refreshingly honest.

    The Extras:
Kite was the first of two albums MacColl released on the Virgin label; earlier this year, EMI/Virgin reissued both this album and 1991's Electric Landlady, expanding them with bonus tracks. One of the extras on Kite is a slightly cleaned-up radio edit of "Free World" (minus the epithet "shag"); the remaining 9 bonus tracks are B-sides, including a cover of the Smiths' "You Just Haven't Earned it Yet, Baby" (which she had recorded for the soundtrack of John Hughes' 1988 comedy She's Having A Baby), a lively cover of Anna McGarrigle's "Complainte Pour Ste. Catherine," the self-penned French number "La Foret De Mimosas," a cover of Marty Robbins' country hit "El Paso" (!), a pair of so-so remixes, and a demo of "End of a Perfect Day."

5 out of 5 stars Used to merely love it, now in my top 10.......2005-09-01

This re-mastering, re-sequencing and re-visiting of this unbelievably fulfilling album has made me understand how much I missed the first time I loved it. Musically and lyrically there is not a weak link here. Kirsty's own songs are probably the strongest, despite the amazing co-scriptings by Johnny Marr and Pete Glenister. I want to know who, besides Joni, can write such densely involving and engaging lyrics, with traditional rhyming patterns, where no rhyme is forced, no cliché is unintended, and you recognize the life around you in every image, sound and inflection. Let's please not even talk about the vocal harmonies, that's a novel right there. What you come away with more than anything is a tiny pie slice of who this woman must have been. I admit it, when I listened to it before, I thought, the world can't be that bad, if it has Kirsty in it. Without her, the world is still better for her, and for this unbelievable record. As soon as I finish listening to it right now, I'm going to listen to it again.

4 out of 5 stars Time only carries this album's reputation higher and higher.......2005-05-29

When "Kite" first came out in the US, I was mystified when it didn't become a hughe hit. It was catchy, intelligently written with the ringing tones of power pop and witty lyrics to boot. I was dumbfounded to find out that hardly anyone bought it. I was even more surprised when I heard that this was trading for big bucks on Ebay. I'm pleased to see that it's available again (if only as an import)to be rediscovered by a world that's undeserving if they don't make this a huge seller.

I miss Kirsty's wit, songwriting chops and singing. There's few songwriters that were at the top of their craft so soon. This expanded edition mirrors the original US version in that it features "You Just Haven't Earned It Baby", "La Foret De Mimosas" and "Complainte Pour Ste Catherine" which were also on the US released in additon to the original 12 tracks of the album. Also included are a killer B-side "Happy", "Am I Right?", a cover of Marty Robbin's "El Paso" three remixes of album tracks and the original demo of the MacColl/Marr original song "The End of a Perfect Day".

There's a note by producer/ex-husband and friend Steve Lilywhite about the recording of the album as well as the original album lyrics. So if you have the original US release (like myself), this is worth upgrading for the four songs not on the original CD. The three remixes are OK the real gem, though, is the original album. Sadly, Kirsty MacColl was killed at the young age of 41 while swimming. She was hit by a boat in waters where boats were restricted. I miss her wit and I only spoke to her once in an interview by phone. I can't imagine what those who were close to her feel. Pick up this great album, enjoy her music and enjoy.

If you want to find out if you'll enjoy this collection of guitar transcriptions, listen to track 7, the "Military Tap" by Mariano Mores. If you can resist the ingenuity of the arrangement and the verve of the performance, this disc is not for you. For further evidence, try track 13, Astor Piazzolla's "Midnight in Buenos Aires," an amazing example of Villadangos's imagination as an arranger. This guitarist, who comes from Buenos Aires himself, has obviously absorbed the tango tradition and idiom completely. You might think guitar solo arrangements would be disappointing, lacking the inherent color of the typical tango band. Not so in this exhilarating collection, which also juxtaposes internationally known tango composers like Piazzolla and Carlos Gardel with others much less well known. Villadangos also supplies his own helpful program notes for this completely satisfying, memorable recital. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars One of the BEST guitar cds ever!.......2006-12-27

This is by far one of the best guitar CDs and the best performance I have ever heard. So far I have 3 cds from Villadangos and they are all brilliant. Strongly recommended!

    5 out of 5 stars OLE.......2004-06-07

This is a wonderful album of acoustic guitar music. I've always loved the Tango and the so-called "classical" guitar. This album brings them together delightfully. The album transports me to a smoke-filled Argentinean nightclub where the Tango is danced very passionately. I agree with the review to this album; tract 13 is wonderful.
If you are into the Tango or guitar music or just want to be transported, in your mind, to a different time and place, buy this disc.
