On their first major label release, Indigenous--four related members of the Sioux tribe--deliver an amped-up set of gruff, ferocious blues rock. Guitarist/vocalist Mato Nanji has the dusky voice of Stevie Ray Vaughan, and his guitar work bears a striking resemblance to the Texan's poured-silver leads and rhythm parts. Jimi Hendrix is another obvious influence, as Mato captures the guitarist's incisive, psychedelic bluster, layering his guitar over the band's thick, oozing, waist-deep groove in tracks like the album's first single "C'mon Suzie." Heavy yet still fluid, the quartet churns through nearly an hour of blistering, unpolished original tunes, plus a meaty cover of Jimmy Reed's "Shame Shame Shame."

Though the name "Indigenous" reflects frontman Mato Nanji's heritage as a member of the Nakota tribe, on Chasing the Sun he sounds more like a member of the tribe of Stevie Ray Vaughan soundalikes. Not that this is necessarily a problem when the songs are so strong, the singing so soulful, and the guitar playing so striking. (Even Vaughan was initially typecast as an imitator of Jimi Hendrix, whose influence permeates the guitar tone on this album's "I'll Be Waiting" and "Leaving.") Whereas Indigenous earlier featured Nanji fronting a family band, these days he pretty much is Indigenous (though sidemen still include his bassist brother Pte). The opening "Runaway" channels so much of Vaughan's signature style that listeners might well mistake it for Stevie Ray, though the album ultimately extends its range to encompass the Allmanesque balladry of "Come on Home" and the bluesy twist given Bob Dylan's closing "Born in Time." What he lacks in originality, Nanji offsets with chops and conviction. --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
Indigenous is AMAZING.......2007-05-20
I recently saw Indigenous play out at the Roxy near Tahlequah, Oklahoma during the Cherokee Nation annual festival and he was truly amazing. It is not often that you see a lead singer who also plays lead guitar, and who writes his music as well. He is, all around, an excellent musician. I recommend this particular CD highly. Some of his earlier ones I was not as big of a fan, but he is growing and maturing in his music. I plan to see him again on June 8 at Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa. I am sure it will be an awesome concert.
Disappointed.......2007-04-05
I remember when CDs first came out - one of the big selling points was that they would last forever. Well, I proved that one wrong listening to "Things We Do" often enough in the two years after I bought it that it started to skip in places no matter how much I cleaned it. The guitar pyrotechnics were great, the riffing was top-notch, the band was tight and provided great accompaniment to Mato's soulful deliveries. So naturally I was drooling in anticipation when I saw a new Indigenous release coming out. I wasn't particularly impressed with the self-titled disc, but I chalked it up to sophomore slump. Now I see that it's more of a linear progression, or should I say regression. The new disc is listenable, but it just doesn't reach out and grab you by the throat like "Things We Do" did. The backing band plays it so straight, they could be autopilot. Now blues is a pretty straightforward format in a lot of ways. We appreciate it because its pure. But it does have an element of swing to it when its done properly. That's why you can often two-step or swing dance to it. This is like having Rycrisp crackers after a banana split. There's a lot missing from what was there before. I guess the key word here would be "uninspired". I'm going to go back and dig out my old disc again and fast forward past the parts that skip... I wish I would have spent the money on a new copy of that instead.
Great covers and great style.......2007-01-19
This is a great rocked-out blues album doing serious homage to Stevie Ray Vaughn. I'm very glad the artist is now branching out on his own. He's definitely got the talent to do this and I'm looking forward to seeing more of this happen as he earns his place in the music world.
Egotistical Blowhard.......2006-12-10
I went to see Mato's reinvented Indigenous 2 nights ago with high expectations. I have been a fan and seen him many times with the family members that he has since DUMPED because someone got him to believe they weren't good enough. The sound mix was so BAD it was painful to my ears, it physically hurt. Mato came off so look-at-me egotistical it would have been laughable if it wasn't so offensive. New band members - nothing special, certainly no great improvement from his family which he obviously does not understand was a portion of his band's original appeal. I walked out on a 15 dollar ticket to save my ears. In the past couple days I have visited with a few people and they ALL said the same word "DISAPPOINTING".
In summation - I highly recommend the early Indigenous recordings. I strongly advise you to AVOID the new and supposedly improved "Mato" and any new recordings. Hopefully he will come back down to earth and rediscover his roots but I doubt it. I gave 1 star only because the review format forced me to.
Mato Rated with SRV, Clapton,. Hendrix??.......2006-10-10
This is what the front of my new Indegenous cd says. Early on, there was Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton, Then later Carlos Santana and SRV. Heres a new name to throw on the blues rock alter Mato Nanji.
Are you serious? This is a misprint!! I demand my money back! This cd blows! I have been hearing about Mato lately and figured I couldnt go wrong! This cd is a joke. I could play better then this guy and that aint no laughing matter! I spent $19 dollars on this false advertisemnet. I should sue the record company for placing that quote on the front of the cd. I will never spend any money on this guy again. Is this what a recoed company has to do to sell something. Geeesh. Mato has a horrible voice to boot. This guy dont even come close to the guitarists it advertises. If you want a guitar player that fits in with SRV, Santana, Hendrix, Clapton, check out Joe Bonamassa!! Joe would blow this guy completely off the stage! Please people, get real! There are way too many other great guitarists that are much better these days. If you wants some blues that is just another Texas style guitar player buy this but Im getting burned out on SRV knockoffs!

In the late 1990s, a whole slew of young guitarists emerged, all making a grab for the Stevie Ray Vaughan mantle. In this group, one must include Mato Nanji, guitarist for the family venture Indigenous. Unlike many of his predecessors, Mato Nanji may actually be deserving of the honor. That's a bold statement, but a listen to "Begin to Wonder," the instrumental "Holdin' Out," or especially "Nothing I Can Do" off of Things We Do are sufficient to justify it. The album opens with the low-key, midtempo title track, but it's on "Got to Tell You" that Things We Do really hits its stride. On the whole, this CD is a very strong effort, especially for musicians still in their early 20s. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
Indigenous - Good Debut Blues Album.......2007-05-16
Indigenous is a blues band comprised of Native American siblings Mato Nanji, Wanbdi, and Pte along with their cousin Horse. The main focus of the band is Mato who is in my opinion one of the best young guitarists to come along in years. His guitar style is very very similar to Stevie Ray Vaughn. His voice is also similar. Unfortunately like many blues bands Indigenous seems to find it difficult to capture the energy of their live shows on their studio albums. "Things We Do" is the band's debut disc and although it is not a mind blowing release it does show a band with tons of potential. The songs are all pretty typical blues with lyrics that are the standard blues clichés, but this is not really a bad thing. It is Mato's guitar and voice that brings the material to a higher level. The instrumental "Holdin Out" and the 2nd track "Got To Tell You" are prime showcases for his guitar prowess. "Things We Do" is a fine debut album from a band that really deserves more attention than they have so far received.
Unbelievable.......2006-07-15
This is a great blues rock album. If you like music in the vein of Stevie Ray Vaughan, this album is most definitely for you. Mato Nanji's singing and guitar playing are second to none. Check it out. You won't be disappointed!
Indians play super blues.......2006-04-19
I didn't know about Indigenous before I heard them on Amazon.
I just board the 3 albums "Live at Pachyderm Studios", "Things we do" and "Indigenous".
I can only say, that the music gets better for every time I play it.
All 3 albums are SUPERB! Now it can't take long before I'll buy "Circles"
Great band.......2005-08-06
I think this is what Kenny Wayne was supposed to sound like but falls flat on his now-Lenny-Kravitz-wannabe a** trying to accomplish. When i first heard Mato, he made me want to run to my guitar and start trying to play like him and that's the true sign of a guitar great in my book.
Greatest Electric Blues Guitar band! .......2005-07-04
If you're searching blues artists and reading reviews and you don't buy this one(or any Indigenous), you're a fool. They are one of my all time favorites. I agree with another reviewer that said this guy captures the two greats "Hendrix" and "SRV" and makes you hear both of them, yet has his own style and originality. Very true. Thank you (Indigenous) for coming out with such a great cd. The only other band I like as much or better is the "Chris Aaron Band" (with Corey Sterling).

Songs from the heart.......2006-11-03
I became aquainted with Marta Gomez after hearing her song in the Putamayo CD - Women of Latin America. Looking for more of her work, this was the 1st one I purchased, and I'm glad I did. The combination of her sweet voice with the simple yet full of wisdom lyrics (granted, you have to understand the language) make Cantos de Agua Dulce unbeatable.
Just a note on the name, it should be Songs of the Fresh Water. Similarly the English translation of the lyrics on her web site could be improved a bit.
cantos de agua dulce.......2006-03-01
I like her songs because the thems and her voice that have a unique and sensual expression.
beautiful voice.......2005-08-22
I heard Marta Gomez live in some basement of the Jewish Museum in New York City in July, 05. She sounded like an angel to me and this CD doesn't loose that sound. Good music for background during a dinner party or hanging out at home with my sister.
You can't go wrong with Cantos De Agua Dulce.......2005-08-03
I heard a review of this CD on NPR and ordered it the same day. From beginning to end, it's easy on the ears... Marta's voice is pure and angelic and perfectly supported the sophistically simple play of her band - everything is clear as a bell. I don't understand or speak Spanish and that, to me, is part of the magic - one can revel in the joy of the music itself. On the other hand, my wife does understand most of the lyrics and loves this CD too. We've both given copies of it to family and friends. Throw Cantos De Agua Dulce in your car's CD player and drive. Who know's where you'll end up? But you'll enjoy the journey.... you can't go wrong.

Performed for a tiny audience at the renowned Pachyderm Studio in 1998, this CD is the best example of what Indigenous sound like live. While their national debut Things We Do is an excellent introduction to their music, their live shows are far above and beyond any studio recording in terms of energy and performance, as the entire band frequently takes off into 10-minute jams to mind-blowing effect. Live at Pachyderm Studio provides a taste of that, including extended versions of several previously recorded songs, as well as previously unavailable material. An item of special interest is the cover of Hendrix's "Red House"; the guitarist's influence on Indigenous frontman Mato Nanji is undeniable. The production on this album is so clear, putting it in the stereo and cranking it up might be almost as good as hearing them live. This band is addictive, and Live at Pachyderm Studio is the perfect fix. --Genevieve Williams

Indigenous - Essential Blues Album, The Band's Best.......2007-05-17
Forget all of this band's studio albums, this is the real deal. Like many blues bands Indigenous home is on the stage and their studio albums don't seem to capture just what they are capable of in a live setting. I've had the pleasure of seeing Indigenous live twice and they are well worth the price of admission if they ever come to your town. This album was recorded live in the studio in front of a small audience and does a very good job of capturing the band's live sound. Guitarist Mato Manji is the star here and comes off like a cross between Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimi Hendrix. Some of the studio songs on the band's debut album are lengthened out here into all out jams which really give Mato and the band a chance to spread their wings. This is especially true of "Blues From The Sky" and "I Wonder Why" both of which clock in around the 10 minute range. An absolutely incredible cover of Hendrix "Red House" is also included where Mato gives the original a good run for it's money. I have most of the band's studio output and although they are all good, they do not compare to this. If you love great blues guitar and especially if you were a fan of Stevie Ray Vaughn style blues, this album is an essential purchase. Mato is one of the best young blue guitarist to emerge in the last 10 years and this is the album that best demonstrates his remarkable ability.

Overrated boring performance........2005-07-13
I have tried several times to like this band. I have seen their live DVD and it is very similar to this CD. The vocals are weak and hardly understandable, every song sounds like the last one. There are absolutely NO dynamics in their music and anyone who thinks this guitarist is something special is either NOT a guitarist, or a beginner at best. They also have no stage presence, just looking like they're going thru the motions. There's too much great blues out there to be wasting your time with this.
mire mimics.......2004-02-24
I listen to the mp3 here, and believed the words of praise by other reviews and bought this CD.
The production is bad. The music and vocal tracks are flatten together. Its sounds like a gray mush. The guy sounds like SRV and sings like him too. They just don't play with the same heart and soul.
This CD mimics a great guitarist. .
I was sadly disappointed.
GREAT LIVE BLUES / ROCK CD.......2003-03-13
This is a tour de force for INDIGENOUS and specifically MATO NANJI. Great playing, good songs, great recording. I bought THINGS WE DO a while back and was debating whether the 4 new tracks alone would make buying this CD worthwhile. Don't hesitate as even the make over the other songs receive in a live
environment make them a new experience and RED HOUSE alone is worth the price. Not since HENDRIX and SRV has a guitarist sounded like this in a live gig. For my liking he sounds a little to close to his heros and needs to develope further into a style that will be recognisable as his. He has the talent and a lot of time on his side. This would be 5 stars were it not for the similar tone and style of SRV and HENDRIX.

Nakota Nation quartet Indigenous refine and expand their already impressive sound on their second studio full-length album, Circle. These twentysomethings prove themselves to be the most rounded of all the young guns. They embrace instrumental subtleties over rapid-fire blues scale exercises and emotionally engaging singing over howling vocals. And they write good songs, too--nine of the 11 tunes are originals, and all demonstrate grace, maturity, and soulfulness. The big organ with lightly distorted, snaking-guitar-lines sound works well for the group throughout. Thankfully, they deviate from the overtly (though capably rendered) Stevie Ray-ish sound of the opening track, "Little Time." The pedal steel-flavored album closer--famed Vaughn collaborator Doyle Bramhall's "The Moon Is Shining"--is a lovely, light-as-a-cloud number that definitely leaves the listener wanting more. Guitarist and singer Mato Nanji is truly a talent for the ages. --James Conde
Customer Reviews:
Indigenous - Solid Release.......2007-05-17
"Circle" is the 2nd full studio album from Indigenous. The previous live disc is still the highlight of the band's catalogue, but "Circle" is a decent studio album produced by a great guitarist in his own right Doyle Bramhall. The songs show a continued maturity for the group, but I still find some of the things missing here. All of the songs are in the 3 to 4 minute range which never really lets the band kick into any killer jams like they do in concert. Mato does have a lot of short tasty guitar solos here and there, but they get reigned in before they have the chance to really take off in many cases. Overall I don't have any major criticism of this album; it is a good solid blues rock release that should please fans of the band.
Powerful guitarist.......2006-11-29
I saw this band in 2003 when they were playing with Jonny Lang. Mato's
guitar playing blew me away! I have never seen anyone play the guitar like
he did that night. Very powerful! I think these guys sound a lot better live
then on CD.
Thank you again for another great cd........2005-07-04
You just can't go wrong with "Indigenous". They are different, original and they capture a mood. What I mean by that is, their music puts you in a certain mood. You know how some songs take you to another place in your mind(or your past)? Well this music has that affect in a very positive way. The vocals are very good, almost haunting at times, but in a good way. Great stuff!
Best Native American band to ever come out of North Dakota.........2004-11-11
The best Native American band to ever come out of North Dakota! Produced by Doyle Bramhall. I hear many influences such as Hootie, ZZ Top, Allmans, and Santana but no really strong songs like those bands are known for. Decent album.

This music is mesmerizing. Beautiful, haunting!! Makes you feel how music is supposed to make you feel! I recommend it to anyone who listens to music WITH MEANING!

Jimi Hendrix is another obvious influence, as Mato captures the guitarist's incisive, psychedelic bluster, layering his guitar over the band's thick, oozing, waist-deep groove in tracks like the album's first single "C'mon Suzie." Heavy yet still fluid, the quartet churns through nearly an hour of blistering, unpolished original tunes, plus a meaty cover of Jimmy Reed's "Shame Shame Shame." --Hal Horowitz

Inidgenous - Bad Production But Good Material.......2007-05-17
This is the band's 3rd studio album and the first on a major label. It would also prove to be the last with the original lineup. The biggest problem with this album is the production is very muddy. Maybe they were trying for a grungier sound, but it really clogs up the works on this one. The material is all good for the most part. The leadoff track "C'mon Suzie" is an obvious attempt at a single. Guitarist Mato stretches out a bit more here than on "Circle" and the band even includes several instrumentals. As on their previous studio discs the album fails to capture the energy of their live performance, but I think this is probably their best studio album to date and another solid blues rock offering.
Time will tell, hindsight is 20-20.......2007-01-24
Well now it has come to pass that this album is the last from the original lineup of the band. It is a great album as all of Indigenous' have been. Alot of these reviews only mention Things We Do and Circle as previous albums, true fans know about many more such as Love-In-A-Mist, Blues This Morning, Live Blues From the Sky, Fistful of Dirt, Long Way Home, and Live at Pachyderm Studio 1998, Chasing the Sun(No more Horse or Wanbdi!), the dvd, the vhs, and one I do not have (yet) Awake the first album. All of their music is awesome bluesy rock and they just blow the doors off most all other acts out there. Indigenous Rocks!

Fantastic Band... Slightly Disappointing CD.......2006-04-19
Let me start by saying Indigenous is a fantastic band. I own every CD released by Indigenous and have always been pleased with their offerings. However this CD is not up to par with their previous work. I have two problems with this CD. The first is that the CD just sounds bad, it sounds as though it might have been recorded in someone's garage, production quality should have been better. If you can get past this obstacle you will likely enjoy this CD. The second problem for me is the songs, the songs are good but they are not quite up to par with what in the past has made Indigenous stand out far and above the rest in the Blues-Rock genre. If you want to hear Mato & family at the top of their game buy "Live At Pachyderm Studio". Ok, I know what you are thinking.... live recordings $uck, and for the most part you are correct, they do. However, trust me, this one does not. This is an in studio recording with good sound quality, and this music showcases what Mato is capable of on the guitar. I hope that the next time Indigenous is in the recording studio they stop to think what it is about them musically that makes them unique and extraordinary, which I believe is easily made evident by songs like those on "Live At Pachyderm Studio", which are good songs made great by Mato's unique voice and extraordinary guitar work!
Another Great cd from a great band.......2005-07-04
From the first song I heard of "Indigenous" I new I was going to like them. I just didn't realize how much. I think this third studio album is right on par with the first two. Great guitar, great singing, great cd. Thank you for another great cd. If you are just hearing about them, start with their first cd "Things We Do". I'll bet if your a fan of SRV, Kenny Wayne, Joe Bonamassa, etc. You will love this group.
disappointing.......2005-04-25
First of all, I am a huge Indigenous fan. Mato Nanji is simply
incredible. However, this album is a disaster. It is not in the
same league as Circle or Things We Do. The recording quality is
appalling for a modern recording. It is heavily compressed and
distorted. Indigeous should dump the Davey Brothers as their
producers. I have all Indigenous recordings including their EP
CDs and their video DVD. This album is by far the worst of the
lot. Please come back to your senses Mato. P.S. Indigenous is
just great live. Don't miss them if they come to your town.

Don't miss it!.......2004-04-25
I had never heard of Bill Miller until recently attending several of his performances at a local Indian Market. I kept going back to hear and absorb more, and afterwards, ordered several cd's, including this one. I wonder how and why I could have avoided hearing of him and missing out on his fantastic music for so long. Mr. Miller is a consummate musician and his lyrics and music evoke unimaginable heartfelt emotion and imagery. He is a master of a broad range of genres, keeping his style fresh and unique. His voice, guitar, and flute are instruments of great beauty and power. His music is a treasure. I found nothing long-winded about this cd, in fact, it left me wanting to hear more.
An excellent introduction........2004-04-07
Vanguard took up the difficult task of summarizing Bill Miller's amazing career in 16 songs and did it wonderfully. This is an excellent introduction to the career of this deeply spiritual folk-country-blues-rocking singer/songwriter/guitarist/flutist of Mohican heritage. While a long-winded description of the man and his music, it is very accurate. Whether you're looking for some sort of spiritual enlightenment or just good music, "Spirit Songs" is a must-own.

Benin, West Africa is the home to several Yoruba religious cults based on a pantheon of gods. Overlapping rhythms embedded with symbolic religious meanings are played by a variety of drum ensembles including cylindrical bata drums, hourglass-shaped dundun talking drums, and the tall gelede drums.

Essential. One of the must-have discs........2003-08-07
If you're reading this review, do yourself a favor and buy this cd. For several years now this has been one of the first cd's I always ask people about if we happen to discuss anything about West Africa. My thought being that if the person is already into various West African musics but they don't have this cd, they need to have it. Also, if they are just curious but don't have anything, they need to have it.
Performance-wise, this cd is a dream, and it's recorded equally well. What we have here is a great mixture of excellent bata and dundun ensembles. The one thing that saddens me about this disc is that it had to be presented like this. Just like 1-5 tracks from each different ensemble. I wish there was more mass-interest in music such as this. There is not one ensemble on this cd who isn't worthy of an entire cd (or more) all to themselves.
The liner-notes will also be of interest to anyone wanting to learn more about the cultures represented here, and Yoruba in general. The notes are quite musically detailed also, in case you are a musician. If none of that interests you though, don't worry. Even if you never even glance at the liner notes you will still have a fantastic disc of very powerful drumming. From the springy, rubbery tone of the dundun ensembles, to the taut, tighter, staccato tones of the bata's. The bata ensembles are sometimes almost like an orchestra of layered, overlapping, musical machine-gun fire.
I'd also like to recommend the Master Drummers Of Dagbon 2-disc series. Totally different drumming styles but for me, these cd's are all joined at the hip. I wouldn't even want to try living without any of them.
Great liner notes, interesting drumming.......2001-05-05
This CD may be worth buying for the liner notes alone. There are almost no commercially available recordings of Yoruba bata drumming, and this is a good one. In contrast, there are dozens of recordings of Cuban bata drumming, which is the form that grew out of Yoruba bata drumming during the slave trade. Bata drums are the sacred drums of the king-god Shango, and are used in ceremonial music for the Orishas in AfroCuban Santeria, as well as in Yorubaland (present day Nigeria mostly) to speak praises and for Egungun (ancestor) masquerades. I'm glad this CD was produced and is now easy to find. ...

Credit not given.......2006-05-14
I recently rewatched the movie "Angel Eyes." for a Jennifer Lopez movie it was surprisingly very good - I was disappointed though, when I went to Amazon to check out the sound track - the woman who performed the song, who was quite good, was mentioned, but not the originator of the piece. It is a shame that Mr. MacLean was not given credit on the CD single which the singer put out. We need more people to "sing the praises" of the the Scottish Bard!
It gets NO better than this!.......2003-03-19
I unknowingly was introduced to Dougie because of Kathy Mattea's cover of 'Ready for the Storm' which moved me deeply. That was years ago. A month or so ago I saw a television special about Celtic music, and Dougie was featured. I ordered this cd after watching that show. It is my goal to own all of his recordings within the next month. As I said above: It gets NO better than this.
If I had to choose one..........2002-01-21
Anyone who has listened to Dougie knows that it's difficult to pick a favorite album. Each is very different, with unique character and stories to tell. But this is the album I sing along to the most, the one that lingers in my mind long after it ends. So if you're new to this artist, I recommend starting here. These songs meld sadness and beauty in such a compelling way that I imagine myself in them. They explain the heart of a people and individuals through difficult ages and powerful loves.
It's tough to explain why this music speaks so much to me. My musical tastes range from alternative to classic rock to a bit of Christian. All I can say is, the quality and poetry here should be experienced by everyone...and it will naturally be appreciated.
Another Gem!.......2001-10-10
The poignant and passionate delivery of these tracks makes it easy to see how dedicated Dougie is to his music. This artist conveys oppression in such melodic terms, and the version of Burn's `Ae Fond Kiss' is the most beautiful I have heard. Dougie's music never fails to move me to extreme heights of awe. A talented musician indeed, and his vocals are so delightful to listen to.
When it comes to Celtic music, I find Dougie's creations in a class of their own: absolutely addictive.
One of the best albums ever!.......2001-09-03
A couple of years ago, I was introduced to music by Dougie MacLean. I found him to be absolutely one of the most moving and talented musicians I have ever had the priviledge to listen to.
In short, Indigenous is one of the greatest CD's I have ever listened to. The music wraps around you and touches your soul. It is Dougie's best. I recommend this to Celtic and non Celtic music lovers. It is well done and an extraordinary work.

Album Description
This recording leaves the listener breathless and astounded by the musical richness of this small area of Africa. In these performances from remote areas of central Ghana, the collective musical genius of everyday farmers, fisher-folk, traders, and civil servants bursts forth. Their singing and chanting moves through a colorful palette of instruments including water drums, rectangular frame drums, side-blown horns, and brass bands. Clear, penetrating sounds of metal instruments offset by complex drumming patterns are framed by haunting vocals. Listeners are immersed in a kaleidoscope of sound. Thirteen tracks and 28 page booklet including extensive notes and photos. This is the only commercially available recording of Akan music.
Customer Reviews:
Great Disc.......2007-06-30
This is a great disc. I whole heartedly review with the former reviewer -- there is so much diversity to just the music of Ghana alone that there is no way to classify it all under one category. So you will need to stretch out and purchase a bunch of different discs with various different styles. This is a good one.
More great music from Ghana. .......2004-11-20
This is a disc completely worthy of your money and time. In case you have family, historical, and/or geographical reasons for wanting to know, the music on this disc is from Ghana's Central Region (not actually in the center of Ghana though, "Central Region" is the name of... for lack of a better term... a state in Ghana). The music is by (and from their areas of the Central Region) Assin, Efutu, Denkyira, and Fante peoples. All are Akan groups except the Efutu, "whose languages belong to the Guan cluster of the Kwa branch". Obviously I got this from the liner-notes, as I am no expert on all the many... and there are MANY... different languages and cultures of Ghana.
As for the music itself, I've had this disc for a couple weeks now and I'm loving it more with each listen. It is a very fine collection of recordings! I didn't get to the liner-notes until yesterday. It was interesting to find out that the Efutu are not Akan, since I had already noticed a distinct difference between the feel of their music and the other (although also differing) musics here. For those with some hip-hop interest, the Efutu track here makes me feel like they are playing some sort of ancient ancestor of a Timbaland beat. I like it alot. =)
There is alot for which to be thankful on this disc, and if you've ever stumbled upon my reviews for a few other cds from Ghana (the Master Drummers of Dagbon 1 & 2, and the Master Fiddlers of Dagbon), you'll be interested in knowing that this disc is completely different from those. Unfortunately, oftentimes things are lumped under the monolithic label of being "African music", but that is so broad as to be almost meaningless, considering the degree of musical diversity even in just one small country like Ghana. If you have the Masters discs I just mentioned, and you're worried about buying this one and feeling like it'd just be more of the same, don't worry. This is a whole other world.
The singing here has a much more organized feel than that on the Masters discs. Also, this disc always has larger groups of singers. It is more of a central feature of the music as well. Some lovely "chorus" vocals, sometimes in the form of interplay with the drumming. What you'll think of the brass band tracks (just a couple), I do not know. I like them, but I'm a weirdo. The first one strikes me almost as William Parker-ish orchestrations of his interpretation of the timbre of a bleating goat. I mean that in a good way. Also the percussion on that track is fantastic! I'm not sure how they are getting this tone, but it's like controlled, perfectly timed fireworks exploding in the distance.
Rather than rambling further, I will wrap this up by saying you probably didn't stumble on this cd by accident, so this sort of thing already interests you. Go ahead and pick this one up because I'm sure you're going to love it.
1979 field recordings from the Akan coastal areas of Ghana.......2004-03-09
Field recordings of Akan folk music from the Central and Western Regions of Ghana made by ethnomusicologist Roger Vetter in 1979. In this respect the disk is more narrowly homogeneous than some similar ones: only the Central and Western Regions are represented, although the bulk of the Akan population of Ghana lives in the Ashanti and Eastern Regions. And, obviously, if it is a disk of Akan music, it does not include music produced by other ethnic groups in Ghana.
What the disk lacks in geographical and ethnic diversity, it makes up in stylistic reach. The music in these recordings is played by non-professional and semi-professional players, and although most of the music is quite traditional (i.e. shows little European influence) some tracks include instruments that originated outside Africa such as the tuba or the electric guitar, and some of the repertoire including waltzes and gospel music show a Western influence transmogrified in the local milieu. In this regard the recordings are authentic: the variety of music produced for local performance and consumption in the Akan coastal regions of Ghana was (and remains) varied, reflecting a variety of cultural uses and influences. While most of the music on this disk was meant for dancing, one of the most interesting tracks is a talking drum piece in which the message is not only played but recited, allowing one to hear the translation from speech to drumming. The accompanying booklet documenting the cultural background, the players, their instruments, and the various musical styles is highly informative.
