Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

5 out of 5 stars " one of cinema's greatest composers...John Barry".......2001-07-06

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

4 out of 5 stars THERE"S HEAT ALRIGHT!!.......2006-02-09

You didn't want THIS band opening for your band, uh uh! The track 'Heat In The Street' alone is worth the price of admission here. I have been a Tommy Aldridge fan since his drumming days with Black Oak Arkansas and he is in fine form here. Pat Travers put out some very good material in his heyday and should have been bigger. I saw him during his 'Black Pearl' days and he did not disappoint. Adding this CD to your collection is highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Poor sound quality.......2005-07-19

I love this album but for some reason this version of the cd has high levels of static thoughout. Certainly not the quality I expect from a remastered cd. It sounds more like a bootleg quality made from copying the original vinyl. Steve

5 out of 5 stars 100 degrees in the shade!.......2004-11-03

Stole that line from a PT song on his last official "rock" record "Hot Shot". That sums up this record. Smokin'! I was in High School when I stumbled upon this LP. I had witnessed PT 3rd on a bill earlier that year prior to adding Aldridge and Thrall and was operating as a power trio. The album: From the minute I played "Go All Night", I knew this album was it! "Heat in the Street" was another scorcher, along with the other rockers and the more laid back "One for You and One for Me", the LP rarely made it off my turntable. I don't know if Pat ever cut any tunes that didn't make his records but some type of bonus tracks would have been greatly appreciated here. An album under 40 minutes does not seem a value in the CD age. Waiting forever for this to be released in the US, now nothing really extra. But buy this for the songs which are great. The songs are great and the band stayed together for a Live record then "Crash and Burn" then that was it. Magic for a short time. The BBC concert CD proves just that. The Pat Travers Band toured and recorded for many a year after this but the songs and the band just were never the same. This beats the live one up and down which really says a lot and Crash and Burn just lacked something on some of the tunes. Was it too heavy on the keyboards? YES. Travers plays guitar and started to forget that later on in his career. I have always been a true PT fan buying everything that he puts out including the new one with Carmine Appice. Nothing beats this record. BUY IT NOW, Thank me later.

5 out of 5 stars It's Hot Out There!.......2004-05-12

Pat Travers Band "Heat in the Street"

I just loved the cover photography of this album, showing PT & band relaxing, having a cool one in a downtown Miami street parking space. As a matter of fact, my friends & I liked it so much we were going to do the same thing here in our town, Cedar Rapids, with a big sign of "Heat in the Street" with the song blaring in the background. Alas, we never did, so much for the exuberance of youth.

PT added a second guitarist, the smokin' Pat Thrall & new drummer, the brilliant Tommy Aldridge for a live band that would be feared as an opening act to end all headlining acts, & even though this is a studio effort, one could tell already this was a band to be reckoned with. "Heat in the Street" opens with the monsterous self titled musician extravganza. Guitars, bass, drums, flowing at high speed down a musicscape of perfection, as one densely tuned unit. "Killer Instinct" romped & rolled all over my ears. "I Tried to Believe" is an heart-felt proffession of unrequited love. "Hammerhead" was a instrumental milestone of speed & aggression, truly one of a kind at the time. "Go All Night" may well be the fastest & funkest PT song to date, a perpetual creation of heavy funk rock motion. "Evie" is just a plain all out party rocking monument to partying. Last, but not least, another beautiful song in the tradition of "Putting it Straight's "Dedication," the love song "One for Me & One for You."

With this fourth studio album PT made no doubt that his was the most sophisticated Heavy Metal band in his day. Very few trodded down the path of his marriage of instrumental perfection, writing skills, & funk/metal, to put it over the top. A true visionary!

5 out of 5 stars Pat Travers' Two Best Studio Albums On One CD.......2004-07-01

One Way Records has done something unbelievable here: they've put the two best Pat Travers studio albums on one affordable CD. The songs are all excellent, especially the inspirational "Life In London" and "Dedication" from PUTTIN' IT STRAIGHT, and the title track from HEAT IN THE STREET. Get this one, PAT TRAVERS, MAKIN' MAGIC, LIVE! GO FOR WHAT YOU KNOW, and CRASH AND BURN all at once. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars It's About Time!.......2004-03-12

Pat Travers "Putting it Straight"

27 years, have I've been spinning this album. I've went through three vinyl copies & have a Japanese import CD, now I also have a double album CD which "Heat in the Street" is also included. It maybe redundant at this point to say that "Putting it Straight" is not just my favorite PT album, but my favorite album of all time! It still sounds as everybit fresh today as the day I popped it on my record player, so many years ago.

"Putting it Straight" starts off with the speeding mammoth, shiny metallic freight train that is "Life in London." PT's last word on the punk scene that was consuming London at the time. Fast, hard, & metallic, "Life in London" is a juggernaut stomping on the lifeless corpse that punk would be in a couple of years. The second & third songs, "It Aint What it Seems" & "Speakeasy," are rollicking guitar riff driven tunes that speak of goodtimes & bad. "Running from the Future" (my favorite song off the album) is a monster of Jazzy metal heaviness with guitar breaks that bring tears to my eyes. The sound he gets out of his guitar is just incredible on this song & the album as a whole, truely unique. "Running from the Future's" subject is also as forboding as it is heavy. PT speaking of his drug use, knowing it will lead to nowhere. "Lovin' You" is a keyboard driven song of love & regret. The funky instrumental "Off Beat Ride" demonstrates PT's fusion side not unlike Jeff Beck's "Wired," it also shows PT's considerable keyboard talents. The giant funky metallic riffery & time changes of "Gettin' Betta" is a immortal PT classic. It draws you in like a set of white water rapids, full of bumps & grinds, you have to hang on! The last song, "Dedication" is gorgeous. It's melody takes you away. It's lryics about friendship & kindness are truly heart-felt & warm. There is no doubt that PT knows how to write important personal songs of life & how to live it, a masterpiece.

This is the last album to feature the tremendous drumming of future Iron Maiden drummer Niko McBrain. Next would be Tommy Aldridge!

5 out of 5 stars PT Still Kickin' Ass.......2003-11-02

Don't have the CD......yet. Just listened to my mint-condition vinyl last night and PT's sound on Puttin' It Straight still kicks ass!!!!! I highly recommend this disc to everyone that enjoys kick-ass r-n-r!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Hit and miss.......2003-08-10

Basically, 'Putting it Straight' is great, 'Heat in the street' however is weak in comparison: a terrible flat sounding dull mix which remastering didn't improve upon at all. The energy and the musicianship just isn't there. While I was listening to it, I commented "Wow...is this the same band!?" The first 8 tracks are just fine, clean sounding and just plain better material. Still, you can't beat the price and you do get full lyrics/credits and a forward by Pat Travers. 16 Tracks/72.50.

5 out of 5 stars 2 Great Hard Rock Albums Finally Available Again!.......2003-04-25

I am thrilled to finally get these 2 great albums on CD without having to pay a ridiculous price on E-bay! I can finally replace my worn out old LPs! These 2 albums have never really gotten the attention they deserved. Pat Travers produced some of the best hard rock of the 70's and it holds up well today. Some highlights are LIFE IN LONDON, the very funky instrumental OFF BEAT RIDE, HEAT IN THE STREET, and my personal favorite KILLER'S INSTINCT.

My only small gripe is that the first 8 songs (Putting It Straight) are out of order. I compared the CD to my LP to confirm this. Not really a big problem though because the CD plays the songs in the order shown on the back of the LP cover instead! But to hear them as on the LP program your player like this: 1,5,8,3,6,4,7,2.

I am very picky about sound quality and packaging and I think that One Way once again did an outstanding job with both! I don't agree with the other posting that said the mastering left something to be desired. This package does leave out a few pictures, but includes full lyrics, new album notes from Pat himself, and new pictures! Highly recommended! Be sure to get this one fast before it goes out of print again!
