5 out of 5 stars good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27

We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars memories.......2007-02-22

This cd is excellent it has a lot of very good music and true to the original sound, Am getting a lot of enjoyment, highly recomended

5 out of 5 stars TV Theme Songs.......2007-01-13

This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.

3 out of 5 stars TV themes.......2006-07-05

Not all what I expected, not all of the tunes are the original recordings you remember as the TV themes.

5 out of 5 stars Deja Vu.......2006-02-17

Listening to these familiar themes as performed by the original artists certainly brings back wonderful memories! I was particularly pleased, not only with the quality of the pieces, but with the actual performances themselves, just as we remembered them!

Ani DiFranco steals the show with her ace rendition of Dusty Springfield's "Wishin' and Hopin'." But DiFranco was playing the lyrics for smirks, which made it hard to wrap yourself up in the performance. Elsewhere, you get Mary-Chapin Carpenter covering "I'll Never Fall in Love Again," a version of "What the World Needs Now Is Love" by Jackie DeShannon; Diana King (of "Stir It Up" fame) doing a lite-reggae version of "I Say a Little Prayer," and a Tony Bennett moment. Burt Bacharach's songs are all over this CD, which is good. But aside from DiFranco and Bennett, many of the artists turned loose to sing them could've been better deployed. Overall, rather slight. --Gavin McNett

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars My Best Friend's Wedding CD.......2007-06-27

To be honest I only bought the CD for one song. If you wanna be happy is the name of the song. I am pretty satisfied.

4 out of 5 stars Old Friends, Good Times.......2007-06-14

I bought this CD strictly for the song "If You Wanna Be Happy". You know, the song that cautions about making a pretty woman your wife. I needed the song for a PowerPoint presentation/gameshow I was doing in honor of my husband's 50th birthday/LIRR retirement party. (Yes, he did make the mistake, early in our marriage, of casually agreeing with the advice in the song! He has since learned not to voice those opinions.)
I found myself pleasantly surprised by the eclectic selection of songs and have downloaded it to my Zume. It is nice to hear some of the oldies again and remember what you were doing when they were first popular. It makes for a nice nostalgia trip. Poor yourself a glass of wine, kick back and reminisce.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-12-03

This is one of my favorite movies... and so I had to own the soundtrack.
This was such a wonderful buy I just couldn't pass it up! :)

3 out of 5 stars Not Quite Like The Music In The Movie.......2006-07-19

I love watching movies and then purchasing the soundtracks shortly after I can't stop singing the music on the movie. I purchased this soundtrack recently and let me tell you that it is good but I was somewhat disappointed. I think that the songs are very soothing and nice, but not quite what was in the movie. I guess what I was looking for was a lot of what I heard during the movie, the cast singing and things like that. Some good advice before buying, keep in mind that if you are looking for something closer to what is heard on the movie, this is not exactly it. If you like the music in the movie in general and do not care about how it is played as long as you get the same words, then you should buy the soundtrack.

In general I was very disappointed that it was not closer to what is featured in the movie, but it has several classics in there for those of you who are looking for that sort of stuff. Good luck on your purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Soundtrack as fun as the movie!!!.......2006-01-29

Such great music!! Nice that it includes some of the songs by the actors, many soundtracks miss those. Notably missing, however, is my personal favorite -- Dermot Mulroney singing The Way You Look Tonight. Now that would make it complete!!

On their third album, Portland, Oregon's Menomena (remember Sesame Street and the Piero Umaliani song, "Mah Na Mah Na"?) sound like Spoon on the brink of outer space with Mercury Rev riding in their rocketship. They write collectively, using software they scripted to assemble songs from their own click-tracks and melody snippets--and then re-learn as new, full-bodied entities. The cumulative effect is often collage-like, with piano and scratchy guitar and drums (and an occasional saxophone) dropping in and out as songs clamber forward, fueled by manic creative immediacy. They know how to throw down, too, thick guitars powering "The Pelican" but never overpowering the unlikely melodicism and irresistible lyricism of a fragile beauty like "Rotten Hell." --Andrew Bartlett

Album Description

This fractured post-punk, post-hip-hop, post-pop album is the much-anticipated follow-up to their debut, "I Am The Fun Blame Monster".

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars No friend of mine!.......2007-06-20

Rarely does an album make such an impact as this one. It takes real talent to sound like this. But it takes more than talent to create vital art, and about the only thing these guys have in abundance is raw talent. Ponderously, embarrassingly over-thought and unforgettably forgo-able. If these guys got it all together they might sound something like Deerhoof...but then, Deerhoof already sounds like Deerhoof...(?)

5 out of 5 stars Turn up and take a drive.......2007-06-19

Great, great album. I would say a cross b/w Radiohead unconventialism, The Earlies tinkering with layered beats and the Arcade Fire epic visceralism. Very inspired and inspiring music. The way it should be -- one of the best albums in 2007...

3 out of 5 stars Fun at first, loses it quickly.......2007-05-14

You might love this stuff at first, but the looping technique of making music results in a loss of that essential magic. This is music via computer, and you can tell.

3 out of 5 stars I like...but do not love.......2007-05-14

I like the first 5 songs and then the songs just start sounding the same...snore, plus there is a song I think #7 that the vocals sound like complete poop.

4 out of 5 stars First really good American indie in a long time.......2007-05-13

Brilliant. On the caliber of Arcade Fire's 1st. I can't see anytime in the near future when I'll get tired of listening to it.

Argentina-born, California-based Gustavo Santaolalla helped shape the rock en Español movement by producing Mexican bands Molotov and Café Tacuba , and Colombian singer Juanes. In the late 1990s he made a switch to soundtracks, working on well-received albums for Amores Perros and The Motorcycle Diaries. His instrumental contributions to Ang Lee's tale of two cowboys in love are acoustic guitar-based and, let's face it, a bit on the sonic-wallpaper side.

The vocal tracks, on the other hand, are uniformly lovely, even if the selection of interpreters falls on the predictable side. Linda Ronstadt, Steve Earle, Willie Nelson, and Mary McBride on the soundtrack to a contemporary Western? What a shock! Still, they're all wonderful and Santaolalla wrote at least a couple of classic-sounding country ballads ("A Love That Will Never Grow Old," sung by Emmylou Harris, and "No One's Gonna Love You Like Me," sung by Mary McBride). And don't miss Teddy Thompson and Rufus Wainwright's sweet cover of Roger Miller's 1964 "King of the Road." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Axe Rufus Wainwright, and it would be 5 stars.......2007-06-13

This album is a mixture of the instrumental theme, which is incredibly beautiful and haunting, and some very solid country songs. I was surprised by how good the other songs were (you still have to like country music, though). There are only two songs that I don't like at all, and those are the two by Rufus Wainwright - one a cover of "King of the Road" (originally by Roger Miller). They are great demonstrations of him at his most nasal and whiny. It sounds like he is a French guy holding his nose and singing too slow. It's too bad, because they are good songs otherwise. I guess if you like him, you're golden; but I can't stand these versions. Fortunately, the rest of the disc is really good.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, it's one of the best albums I own.......2007-06-03

I listened to it over and over and over last year. Such quality all 'round.

5 out of 5 stars Brokeback Mountain.......2007-05-13

The product is what I expected. It arrived on time and in the condition advertised.

3 out of 5 stars A matter of taste..........2007-05-08

I didn't really pay a lot of attention to the music in the film, except for in the most intense of scenes. Perhaps this is why I was so, completely, disappointed with this soundtrack. I felt that if it did even half of what the film did for me it would be a worthy buy. My friends, this soundtrack is shat. It's mostly country and folk, which I am plainly not into. If you like these things then check this out - if not, turn away.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect, just like the movie..........2007-04-21

It is so wonderful, relaxing..if you`re thinking in buying...Just do it!

Product Description

"Hello, Good Friend", from The Rocket Summer is an incredibly infectious album with wonderfully detailed songs. The brainchild of musical wunderkind Bryce Avary. The Rocket Summer blends everything from smart '70s piano pop, passionate punk and lo-fi indie rock into a cohesive modern rock gem. But instead of singing about despair and hopelessness like his comtemporaries, he sings about life, love and God, which is kind of refreshing. So go ahead and say "Hello, Good Friend" to The Rocket Summer.

5 out of 5 stars makes me smile.......2006-10-24

i was going to review this a few says ago but am glad i waited. like bryce's first album this one grows on you as you listen to it. that is why i am giving it 5 stars as opposed to hte 4 i would have a few days back. more positive, fun, and inspirational music! i really enjoy this album and even like it beter than calendar days. i think bryces lyrics are more meaningful on this one. he has a very unique style that is kind of like he's just having a conversation with you. i think this is why aone reveiwer on here said they don't think he puts effort into them. i disagree with that person.they are VERY meaningful lyrics. i also just love his voice. it's very cute and his falsetto is just stunning. for anyone who appreciates honest, fun, different music buy this! if you would rather sulk and complain about how horrible everything is you will hate this. however,i said if you would RATHER. if you are sulking and complaining and want to get out of that mood "hello good friend" should do the trick. thanks again bryce!!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the most fun cds to listen to..........2006-09-17

I love this cd because every song gives you something different. If band examples help, The Rocket Summer is like a mix of Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, the Format, and in a good way broadway. It's obvious that Bryce knows his voice and uses it in very creative ways. From slower songs like "Goodbye, waves, and drives away" to faster ones like "Brat Pack," they are all pretty catchy in their own right. People keep referencing this as emo but the only real "emo" track is the end of "Christmas Present," a partially instrumental song that really ends the cd perfectly. I'm not sure why other reviews suggest spending your money on other CDs that don't fall into this genre at all. I'd never heard of the Rocket Summer until a few months ago and now they are definitley in my top ten favorite bands. Worth buying if you LIKE the bands I listed above...

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!.......2006-09-12

This CD is just not worth it. You know how, when you're building a puzzle, and you are searching for a place for a certain piece, and sometimes the piece seems to almost fit, but it doesn't quite? Well, that's how his music is. Something just doesn't ring cleanly. The music really is pretty bad. His voice is horrible. (You have to wonder how people like this even get anywhere.) The lyrics......bleh. They are a mish-mash of confusing thoughts. The tunes are not even tunes. Just...don't buy it. Please. Save your money for something that won't scar you for life.

If you've heard Deerhoof's noisier forays, the screaming of Satomi Matsuzaki mixed with their lo-fi-gone-mad sonic sense, then Friend Opportunity is going to sound like radio-ready pop. Rest easy, though: the album's mélange of melody and big riffs doesn't give up much ground. Greg Saunier's drums do jump out, sounding studio-painted in their crispness and deep kick-drum thunderclaps to open the album. And is that a touch of Tony Iommi for a few seconds on "The Galaxist"? Matsuzaki still finds her way to float spaceward, with orchestral washes and synth underscores along for the ride, on "Whither the Invisible Birds?" Then there's more drums, more guitar, all of it pitch-perfectly rendered. It's still fractured, but you won't even cut yourself on the edges while dancing techno to the stripped, jerky beat of "Kidz Are So Small." --Andrew Bartlett

Album Description

There's a symphonic conception at work here, entire worlds within chords, genius hooks that may or may not swing by again, a programmatic, narrative flow that takes us from one place and drops us off in another, like an exhilarating abduction. Just as importantly, you can hear how the band took a little something from each of the bands they'd toured with - Radiohead, The Roots, and Wilco - though they don't sound like any of them. "Friend Opportunity" is a feat of reinvention that could only come from artists willing to rethink everything.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Friend Opportunity...Their New Heavy "Pop" Release.......2007-03-30

Deerhoof is a indie trio on the Kill Rock Stars label; and definately an absolute joyous Blast of chaotic Bliss to listen to. Heavy and experimental w/ Satomi's charming Japanese voice.
Singing "Cryout....Cryouut...-through a whirlwind of heavy storm wall-wall guitar thrash - "The Perfect Me"
Although I do prefer their earlier releases like Reveille, Runner's Four and Milkman it seems like with "Friend Opportunity" - Deerhoof is searching closer to a more pop FRIEND-ly accessible album, a bit of a change and in some ways they just keep getting better and better with this more cohesive work.
Deerhoof started as a band in 1994; and features lead singer Satomi Matsuzaki who also plays bass- a sweet & beatiful Japanese voice, John Dieterich on guitar, and drummer Greg Saunier.
FRIEND OPPORTUNITY, released on Jan. 23 2007 & is Deerhoof's newest and "poppiest" (but still heavy)effort to date. And their 8th full-length, with 10 short tracks clocking in at 36 minutes. The band recently toured w/ Radiohead. Other tour-mates in past times include Wilco, The Roots, and Sonic Youth.
The songs are more infectious than ever. More simple - but still complex compared to many other bands; but Deerhoof is more experimental and chaotic w/ sweet childlike vocals. This album's cover art is done by Scottish artist: David Shrigley, along with 11 other covers inside (by him as well). My favorite song is "Believe E.S.P." - Start-stop rockin' dance tune and to me one of their best. If you like Deerhoof (even if you don't) & you haven't heard this - Check it out!

4 out of 5 stars Listen once, listen twice.....listen again........2007-03-17

I'm always looking for good prog rock, experimental etc...whatever you want to call it. Been listerning since the late 60's early 70's to everything from Zappa, Van Der Graaf, PFM, Genesis, T-heads, Yes ....you get the drift. Bought this CD (like many others I've bought) just to try something new. My first impression after a few tunes was...guess this ones gonna be collecting dust! But, I stuck to it and listened to the whole CD with an open mind. A lot of little things, quirky things, odd things jumped out at me...some cool melodies, guitar riffs, moments of dissonant chaos followed by structure. Music that I honestly can't say I've heard, or imagined before. Wow! This album has grown on me. I've already bought 3 more or their previous releases and am looking forward to giving in to the unusual and addicting music that is deerhoof.

Wake-up! You sleepyhead. Deerhoof is presenting you with the most compelling music of the now. Check it out. 100% pony back guarantee.

5 out of 5 stars great.......2007-03-09

this album is fantastic. I really like this band now. The live shows have been good, and they get to stretch out a bit more in the recordings. Great production value.

5 out of 5 stars Not everyone will want to be Deerhoof's friend, but I do!.......2007-03-05

Oft times, music bears a striking resemblance to food. Imagine all of the parallels - pop radio is like candy (you think it tastes good and is harmless, but it's quite damaging), rock and roll is like a cheeseburger and fries (it can be bland and cliché, but great versions of the dish still exist), southern rock is like fried anything (you know it's not good for you, but damn it tastes good), and country music is like Mom's home cooking (it might not be fine dining, but when it's good, it's really good). It's enough to make you wonder what other allusions you can make (without engaging in some really ugly stereotyping). Where does hip-hop/rap stand (and do I have to separate East Coast v. West Coast v. Dirty South)? Doesn't Brit-pop sound better than most British food tastes? And how in the world does one even begin to categorize indie rock (besides referring to it as the tofu of the music world - better for you, but not everyone can acquire a taste for it)?

Then along comes a group like Deerhoof. Here's a band whose possesses sonic tastes and textures that threatens to totally throw off one's musical palate. For more than a decade now, the voice of Satomi Matzusaki has confounded pop music aficionados with her heavily-accented voice in that, as exotic as it might be, it still seems to blend with the beats, riffs, and jams compiled by the 3 guys in the group (guitarist John Dieterich, drummer Greg Saunier, and guitarist Chris Cohen, who left the band in Summer/Fall 2006 to record with his band The Curtains). It's as if the band wants to intentionally mess with your musical mind by drawing you in with their talent, confusing you with Satomi's vocal technique, and then compelling you to keep listening as you wonder just where the album will progress next.

So, when Friend Opportunity released in January, I was curious to see where the band was headed now that they had been reduced to a 3-piece. Would they continue with the more straight-ahead rock of The Runners Four or would they bend more towards the quirky psychadelia of Reveille? Well, much to my pleasant surprise, it seems that Deerhoof has placed themselves upon a middle path that embraced both versions of the group, while not watering down their signature aesthetic. With songs like "The Perfect Me", "Believe E.S.P.", and "Cast Off Crown", the band is more than willing to craft a sound that tears down one's conception of what indie rock is supposed to be as it blissfully and wildly pulls in influences from jazz, prog rock, and soul (just listen to those horn arrangements and keyboard swells).

So, much to my chagrin, when I listened to the album through several times, I began to realize that this album left me wanting more that it provided, which can be good thing. You want people to want more of your music whenever an album is over, but when the core of this album (the first 9 songs) is not-quite 25 minutes long (the 10th song is a rambling, minimalist mess that clocks in at 11:45), I was left scratching my head and wondering, "And?!?! Is this all you're giving me? Are you sure there's not something more I'm missing? Am I too dense and bound up in traditional pop music motifs to get what's going on here?"

I was more than querulous as to why, if these 9 songs are so great, are there so few of them, and, since they're so short, why couldn't they have embraced their prog influences a bit more tightly and recorded at least one carefully constructed song that came close to 4 minutes long. This album is simply too excellent to truly be this brief - then again, maybe I am missing something. Maybe the reason that my favorite Deerhoof album is The Runners Four is that it's the most coherent and focused in its desire to both embrace and deconstruct what we think we know about good, robust, quality pop music. It is frustrating to thoroughly enjoy what one hears and to not understand exactly what just happened - and that might be exactly what attracts me to what this band does with its music.

Is Friend Opportunity worth a good listen-to? Absolutely, as it's full of superb musicianship and is destined to make any decent music listener curious as to what really makes this band tick. So, if you're looking for a food comparison, Deerhoof is to music as haute cuisine is to food - you're not exactly sure why the portions are so small, you're not used to such a eccentric presentation, and it's certainly not something the average person consumes on a regular basis. But you're OK with that, since you enjoy what you eat, even if not enough people understand why.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

From the Label

Sacred marks John McDermott's first recording with the Irish Tenors since rejoining fellow original member Anthony Kearns and Finbar Wright (who actually replaced McDermott in 2000). The Irish Tenors live up to their reputation as "gifted interpreters" with this collection, covering a wide range of spiritual material. Sacred was produced by the Irish Tenors' long-time musical director, Arnie Roth, who has also worked with Charlotte Church, Diana Ross, and Art Garfunkel. The album was produced in Prague at the Rudlofinum and ICN Studios.

We love the Irish Tenors. They are so great. We saw them in person and enjoyed the evening

5 out of 5 stars Beyond words ..........2007-03-22

Having only recently discovered The Irish Tenors, nothing here was a repeat to me. And, even if it was, I can't imagine being disappointed.

If you are open to the idea that music can be a vehicle for a moment of sublime and sacred ecstacy, that may help convey what I find difficult to put into words.

While I live continuously and constantly in Our Father's presence, a music album such as this can certainly heighten the moment with Him.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent voices, songs and arrangements.......2006-06-17

This is an extraordinary collection. The songs are irresistible, the voices incredibly powerful and filled with appropriate emotion, and the orchestra is very simply great. You'll want to buy this album for others. Simply beautiful. A pure joy.

3 out of 5 stars Not their best album.......2006-02-27

For the most part this is an enjoyable collections of sacred music. However the inclussion of "Lord of the Dance" and other modern tunes are dreary no matter who sings them.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent !!.......2005-10-26

I recently went to a concert to hear The Irish Tenors. They did several songs from this CD and it was great. If you like John McDermott as much I do then you must have this CD. This is a triple good CD with 3 top tenors.

Album Description

Tales don't tell themselves, but Matt Davies, lead singer of the Welsh band Funeral for a Friend, will tell them to you. On the band's third proper album stateside, his tales materialize as songs which he describes as dramatic and intense with a sense of urgency. Produced by Gil Norton (Jimmy Eat World, Foo Fighters, Dashboard Confessional), the lead single Into Oblivion (Reunion) showcases soaring guitars, thoughtful lyrics, and even a string section and is set to propel the band further into the American mainstream. Following an upcoming run on the European festival circuit, the band will be headed back to the States for another summer on the Vans' Warped Tour bringing the rock to the masses.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars looking forward.......2007-05-27

I'm very impressed!after really boring "Hours" ,we are able to pick up another(after "casually dressed...) strong and solid effort from Funeral for a friend!yes, they've changed!as for me,it's a good sign!guys are steppin' forward, and I dont care if these steps into mainstream pop\rock or not!forget about stereotypes--let THE MUSIC BE WITH YA!:))

4 out of 5 stars Really 3.5 stars........2007-05-23

I just don't know what to say about this album.I mean it's good album on it's own,but something I wouldn't expect from these guys. The tracks sound like pop rock.I mean wheres the screamo from there first album.Seems to me there trying to do a Linkin Park, another great band completely changing their sound.I wasn't a big fan of hours but it was a alright album,at least they screamed on that album. We all know a lot of bands are changing their sound but they are taking baby steps, not a leap like this one.So if your thirst for screamo isn't subsided then go pick up Lies for the Liars by The Used or Chrome by Cartel.

2 out of 5 stars Borders on being a very weak concept album.......2007-05-17

I'm not sure if FFAF intended for 'Tales Don't Tell Themselves' to be interpreted as an album that figuratively narrates a story about the experience/spiritualness/whateverness of being out at sea -- but honestly, no matter how hard they tried, the album is horribly bleak and inconsistent.

Two stars for 'Into Oblivion' and 'Out of Reach', as much as I had hoped to rate this any higher, I just can't...particularly after seeing how 'Hours' was massive underrated and bashed by critics and fans alike...go back and take a listen to it now in its entirety, it might sway some to change their opinion of what a "weak album" is.

Vocally, TDTT is dead on, no arguments there.
Technically and instrumentally, what happened? Simplification made this album too accessible too fast. (e.g. The Diary)

Perhaps TDTT will put things into better perspective, where the cohesiveness and solidity of an album such as Hours is now far more appreciated for exploring a more mature sound not too far removed from 'Casually Dressed..' days -- and although I wouldn't go as far as saying TDTT is a complete utter failure, remember that effort and sound 'maturity' is always often misunderstood for sucking up to mainstream.

Nice try guys, but this one will take many listens before it even remotely sticks out as nothing short of impressive.

2 out of 5 stars Saw this coming... Funeral for Funeral for a Friend.......2007-05-16

Casually Dressed - Awesome album, and why I love this band.
Hours - Obviously more mainstream oriented, but still very good.
Tales Dont Tell - Purely mediocre, almost boring.

I do NOT own this cd, but listened to the whole thing several times on their myspace page. The only reason i am considering buying the CD is because they are (were?) my favorite band. Am I rushing to conclusions? I sure hope so. Congratulations FFAF, 12 year old girls are going to love you.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not their best.......2007-05-16

I'm a big fan of FFAF since their debut LP "Casually Dressed & Deep In Conversation" , back then their sound was a lot faster with some screams now and then...in their second album "Hours" they changed a bit, the screams disappeared and they sounded a little bit heavier than before...now with "Tales Don't Tell Themselves" the comeback a lot different, but still closer to "Hours" than "Casually...".

When the first track "Into Oblivion (Reunion)" starts you can see that you are going to listen to a new FFAF, new but still awesome. The entire album is amazingly good. Yes good... nothing more nothing less. Since i recieved the news that Funeral was recording a new album, i thought that they would go back to their origins, i thought that i was going to hear screams again. But that was only in my dreams.

I have already heard a lot of people saying bad things about this record... it's not true. I just agree with them when they say that this is not their best...not even close.

Does it worth 14 bucks? Yes, in my opinion, i'd buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-01-09

As a movie soundtrack fan, I was immediately drawn to 'The Greatest Game Ever Played,' and when I got it just a few weeks ago, I wasn't dissapointed.
At first it sounds much like James Horner's 'Legends of the Fall,' but it is by no means a repeat of it. It is a beautifull soundtrack on it's own, with many different themes that keep it exciting. The music has the same early 1900's feel as the movie while stil maintaining a variety of music styles; from soaring strings to intense violin pieces to period vocals like "And the Band Played On." Like the movie, it has a very inspirational feel, and I would definately recommend it to anyone, whether fans of the movie or soundtrack lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Loved the movie, love the score.......2006-03-17

I saw The Greatest Game Ever Played in the theater and became enchanted with this film, based on the true story of Francis Ouimet, a low-class amateur golfer who emerges from complete obscurity to win the U.S. Open. By the end of the movie, I realized how much I was enjoying the music and decided that I just had to buy the soundtrack.

As I have listened to this soundtrack again and again, I've been captivated by this music. The beauty and power of Brian Tyler's composition is most impressive. As an intent listener, I've been deeply moved by the expansive musical landscape that is covered in this soundtrack. The central motif, a majestic and magnanimous melody which forms the essence of the main title, is woven into tracks throughout the disc, tying everything together as part of a musical (and theatrical) storyline. Indeed, it seems like an incomplete experience if I don't listen to the entire soundtrack, start to finish, in sequential order. If you take the time to do that, you'll find it's a very rewarding listen.

5 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars for The Greatest Game Ever Played.......2006-03-11

This was an excellent 10 dollar purchase from iTunes, to put it mildly. As much as I loved Tyler's The Final Cut, Darkness Falls, Timeline and Constantine scores, this tops them all. It's a loving tribute to the main character of the film and good ol' fashioned film scoring in general. I haven't seen the movie and therefore cannot comment on wether or not it works in the context of the film. I can, however, say with great pleasure what a joy it is to listen to as a solo album.
The album picks up with the main title track, and what a great track it is. Some people will say it is Horner reminiscent, and while many themes on this CD do remind me of James Horner's best work, I actually think the closer resemblance is John Debney. I'm serious - this score is in many ways similar to The Passion of the Christ. It has pounding drums and wonderful percussion and isn't afraid to go all out with the string and brass section. It's a thrilling, heroic, melodramatic and operatic score that I've enjoyed listening to repeatedly. A highly recommended score for anyone who enjoys breathtaking and moving and powerful and heroic sometimes lighthearted and always thrilling music.

4 out of 5 stars One of Brian Tyler's best.......2005-10-01

Brain Tyler says of this score that "the orchestral music was influenced by the popular music of the end of the 19th Century and the start of the 20th Century - Debussy, Sibelius, Strauss, and Mahler. To me, the sound we know as 'American' was a combination of the styles of so many of these great European composers." As far as I'm concerned, this score was a lot more influenced by James Horner -- certain bits sound strikingly similar to Legends of the Fall. But don't let that put you off, because the rest of the bits don't. This score is beautiful, lively, energetic, exciting and ebullient Americana throughout -- an odd contrast to Tyler's last score, the dark beast that was Constantine. Despite the occasional "nods" to Horner, though, Greatest Game Ever Played is one of Tyler's best and most thoroughly enjoyable scores, well orchestrated and well recorded also. If it's not quite Children of Dune, it's certainly better than his best since, such as Timeline and The Final Cut, on par with his other score for Bill Paxton, Frailty, though obviously in a very different genre and with a very different sound. So if you're a fan of Brian Tyler or good, uplifting, exciting film music in general, definitely check out this score.
