This, Anonymous 4's final recording, is a break from their usual "early music" periods and locations; it presents American music, religious in nature, from the 18th and 19th centuries. And it's absolutely beautiful from start to finish. Their normal, exquisite technique and purity here blend to sound the way we imagined the ladies' choir in church meetings in America past might have sounded: sweet, sincere, and with harmonies recognizable yet somehow fresh. Some of the songs begin with the women singing "fa, so la" exercises, which was called "shape note" singing because some places taught singing with notes as shapes--circle, rectangle, diamond, triangle. But it's the music that counts, and there are treasures here. They include two versions of "Amazing Grace," one familiar, one with an unusual melody and a piece called "Blooming Vale" which is as sophisticated as anything on their previous albums. "Shall We Gather at the River" is performed with a clarity and loveliness that makes us forget that it's normally sung as background to movies about the Great Depression. The foursome sometimes sing in rich harmonies and occasionally alone or in pairs or trios. This is glorious Americana and highly recommended. --Robert Levine

I have some of the older Anonymous 4 recordings which are more medieval
and gregorian in style (I love them!). They move on to cover spiritual
basics of the 1800s. If you like classical music, perfect harmonies
and spiritual americina, then you will be blessed!

Rich Heritage.......2006-10-11

Anonymous 4 consistently produces exquisite and authentically beautiful recordings and this one presents early American hymns in ways few groups can manage. Some tunes are highly recognizable while others are 'new' to me but a refreshing reminder of the singing heritage of religious societies in times past. For those who enjoy old hymns and authentic renderings, this is a must buy.

Can't walk away from it!.......2006-08-07

My only "complaint" about the CD is that I absolutely HAVE to sit and listen to the entire thing whenever I start it up! I usually have music playing in the background while doing other things, but not this one! There are no tracks that I find myself wanting to skip over as in most collections. In fact, I usually find myself going back and listening to selected tracks again (and again and...) after taking the hour+ to listen to the whole thing through once.

These four ladies produce a unique and remarkable sound. I can't recommend it enough.

I think the title of this CD is perfect. I first heard an interview for this CD on Public Radio and fell in love. I had never heard Anonymous 4 before then but look for all I can find of their music now. The title is perfect as the women sound like Angels and the music lifts the spirit. I find myself singing the old version of Amazing Grace all the time now. Incredible and a huge blessing to all who hear it.

This album is a must-listen for anyone who has listen to the Dandy Warhols or this type of music. The songs "Not if you were the last junkie on earth" and "every day should be a holiday" were great music videos and just flat out great rock songs with a more upbeat tempo, while "Green" and "Orange" are great slower songs with very cool melodies. Most of the rest of the songs are pretty sweet as well, all very catchy and with a lot of "hooks" on each song. "Be-In", "Boys Better", "Good Morning", and "Minnesoter" are all very steady rock songs in their own respective right, as each one has its own great uniqueness. The is a very good album and I'd recommend it to anyone. The only reason I gave it a 4 was because the last 2 songs sounded like they were just experimenting with different sounds but had no lyrics at all, which got kinda boring to listen to, but the first 12 songs except for "whipping tree" make getting this album definetly worth it.

I came to this band late in life, but now can't get enough. This album lacks some of the catchy pop feel of Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia, so is not as immediately accessible. It's also a little more self-indulgent, in my view. That said, I listen to it constantly. Its inaccessiblity renders it more interesting than lots of more hooky works. I actually considered crossing the pond to attend the 8/23 Islington (London) show, but it was sold out before I could get myself in gear to make a reservation. I'm not a jet-setter, but this album clinched it for me. Much as I love Thirteen Tales and Monkey House, they didn't make me gung ho to go to London.

The Pose Is Real And So Is The Music!.......2006-07-03

The Dandy Warhols are the type of band that are exactly as their image represents them to be. So basically, if the name "the Dandy Warhols" sounds like the coolest, cleverest name for a band ever, you will love their music. You'll probably also crack up at their antic-riddled articles and interviews and marvel at how people who are so talented can manage to be as sexy as Courtney, Pete, and Zia. If you don't get the name, well, you're probably just as relieved that the band is pretty obscure in the US of A. Their second album--first major label release--represents both the best and worst of what the Dandy Warhols are capable of. While, personally, I think this album has more individual standouts than the later, more renowned "Thirteen Tales of Urban Bohemia", the latter has a larger number of good, even rock songs and coheres better as an album.

1. Be-in--The title is taken from those drug sessions hippies used to have in the sixties. This is a very long song with a long intro. It's pretty trippy, not surprisingly, and is about drugs. I've always imagined that this song would be a good theme song for a TV show about kids in some type of weird boarding school.

2. Boys Better--One of the hits off the album. Very catchy and powerful. Definitely wakes the listener up after "Be-in".

3. Minnesoter--A brassy, sassy number that reminded some critics of Oasis. It has a raunchy sound to it and raunchy lyrics as well--although I have no idea what the song is actually about and am not one hundred percent certain what `finding one's way to Minnesoter' is a metaphor for. Do I want to know?

4. Orange--A slow, hazy song with less texture than "Be-in". Not one of the better songs on the album.

5. I Love You--Another trippy song yet Courtney Taylor drone becomes almost hypnotic as he numbly repeats over and over again "I love you, I love you, I love you". Apparently this song is also used as the background music for a Pontiac car commercial.

6. Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth--The BEST song on the album! Basically a tongue-in-cheek poke-in-the-eye to the heroin chic culture. Yet there's something oddly poignant about the eye-rolling way in which Courtney Taylor insists, "Heroin is so passé" over the guitar-strumming. The Dandy Warhols didn't do another song this strong until "Bohemian Like You". The video for this song is well-worth checking out--come to think of it, all the Dandy Warhols' videos are. The scene is a psychotic game show in which junkie contestants compete for prizes such as car crashes and tombstones, including dancing syringes.

7. Everyday Should Be a Holiday--Another fast-paced track with a really good dance beat. Apparently it was included in the soundtrack for "There's Something About Mary". Don't miss the slipped-in self-reference, "Super cool, the Dandies rule, okay!"

8. Good Morning--A slow, haunting song. The lyrics, which describe a "good morning" seem to be contradicted by the eerie music which seems somewhat depressing. A quiet gem on the album.

9. Whipping Tree--Another, quiet song. Courtney Taylor kind of mumbles in this one and it strikes me as kind of bland, although I'm sure many people can empathize with the lyrics.

10. Green--Similar to "Whipping Tree" only with more emotion. "I only believe what I want to believe... yes it's because I'm greener than green." Clearly about inexperience of whatever variety.

11. Cool as Kim Deal--A very sunny, cool-sounding song extolling the virtues of ultimate rock chick, Kim Deal.

12. Hard On for Jesus--Definitely play this at your local Church picnic. You owe yourself and your pastor that much.

13&14. "Pete International Airport" and "The Creep Out"--these last two songs are probably the worst on the album and together make up fourteen minutes. They just consist of weird, spacy music and muted vocals. I can assume that "Pete International Airport" is some sort of reference to guitarist Peter Holstrom, but other than that, they both lack focus and I usually skip over them.

Half of the songs on this album showcase the Dandy Warhols' ability to make brilliant, satirical rock anthems like "Minnesoter", "Boys Better", and "Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth", while the other half can be classified as slow, trippy drug songs. These slower, murkier tracks aren't necessarily bad as a rule--"Be-in" and "Good Morning" are quality, but others, like "Orange", "The Creep Out", etc., just seem to be long drawn-out layers of music with no substance. In conclusion, the Dandy Warhols should be commended for being a band that has the guts to be edgy, funny, and produce quality music that isn't categorically dark, even if they occasionally miss their mark.

I only write reviews about the best of the things I find on amazon.com but to say that '13 tales of ubran bohemia' is the only awesome album put out by the Dandy's is in short blasphemy. While 13 is the apex so far this album is everything so many artists never achieve even for one song. The poppy hit is 'not if you were the last junkie on earth' but not the albums best song (I'll let you decide which is). I'll admit I'm a Portlander but this is too good to miss.

What a great album! I think this CD contains most of my favorites by the Dandy Warhols..."Be-in", "Boys Better", "I Love You", "Every Day Should be a Holiday", "Green", "Hard On for Jesus"....they're all incredible! I think my absolute favorite on this album would have to be "Green". It is so enchanting and mellow. I could listen to it for hours. There is a wide variety of sounds on this album. Fast, slow, heavy, soft...you name it. The Dandy Warhols have done it. Don't miss this album.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

The "Essential" Purcell? Well, you could get a bunch of critics to argue about that for a few days, but in the meantime, here is a sampler of highlights from the King's Consort's three admirable Purcell series: the Complete Odes and Welcome Songs, Complete Anthems and Services, and Complete Secular Solo Songs. There are, of course, some of Purcell's most-performed pieces (which probably are "essential"): Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, "Sound the trumpet" from Come, ye sons of Art, Rejoice in the Lord alway (the "Bell Anthem," named for the string figure at the opening that sounds like pealing bells), the gently patriotic "Fairest isle, all isles excelling" (sung by a miscast James Bowman), and a selection from the funeral music for Queen Mary. There are also some delightful surprises--particularly among the little-known secular songs and church music. The plaintive "O fair Cedaria" gets a lovely performance by Barbara Bonney (a singer not usually associated with Purcell); tenor Rogers Covey-Crump (possibly the ideal high tenor for Purcell) sings the enchanting "If music be the food of love"; the church anthems "Let mine eyes run down with tears" and "Remember not, O Lord, our offences" have some startling harmonies as daring as any Monteverdi ever wrote. If you're unfamiliar with Purcell, this reasonably priced disc is a good place to start exploring without a big initial investment. --Matthew Westphal

Absolutely beautiful baroque music! The arrangament, singing and instrumentation is superb. It is too bad that Henry Purcell is not as widely known as Bach, because he should be recognized equally well."The Sparrow and the Gentle dove" is alone worth the price of the album! I can not stop playing it!

Like in his renditions of Handel's oratorios, Robert King manages to bring a freshness and strenght to Purcell's music that I had seldom heard before. This CD also features some of the best performers of early music in the world. My favourite tracks are Oh, Fair Cedaria, sung by the multi-talented Barbara Bonney; Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher; She Loves and she Confesses too, sung by the wonderful Susan Gritton; and Welcome, Welcome Glorious Morn, sung by Rogers Covey-Crump. The only track I didn't find absolutely wonderful is Fairest Isle, sung here by James Bowman. Don't get me wrong, I generally love Mr Bowman, I think that his performance in Mr Purcell's Most Admirable Composures (also conducted by Robert King) makes it another essential Purcell recording; but I find that Fairest Isle was much better done elsewhere, particularly by Christopher Hogwood and Barbara Bonney.

These songs aren't only beautiful, they're also poignant, sweet and unpretentious. I think that it will be very clear to anyone who listens to this recording that Mr Purcell was one of the finest composers that ever lived.

Be Welcome then, great Sirs (and Mesdames)........2001-10-20

If anyone has benefitted from the reversion in the last three or so decades to period instruments and historical reconstruction, it is Henry Purcell. Before, he was merely great, the peerless word-setter in the English language, a virtuoso of boundless range, a professional composer whose offical commissions were always imbued with personality and invention. But period instrumentation has added to this a greater depth, an other-worldly texture of sound. With his intricate, multi-part vocal writing, his preference for low, rumbling instruments such as the bass viol and the strange and remarkable theorbo, as well as his often sombre and low-key subject matter and treatment, Purcell creates a round, glowing, humming sound as pregnantly full as dub reggae.

This has an extraordinary effect on the listener. Whereas Bach, with his mathematical abstractions, sounds universal and timeless, Purcell's music takes the listener back 300 years, back to different ways of thinking about, feeling about and addressing things we still think etc. about today - death, love, friendship. The emotion is timeless, but the music's beauty is alien, THEIRS, hence its preciousness.

A lot of intelligence has gone into the unity of this compilation, beginning with two Welcomes (to the dawn and to the listener, in this case a King), and ending with thoughts of evening, death and a Baroque 'Thank you for the music'. These are bright, fanfare-like works, but the predominant mood is slow, ruminative, quiet. The selection covers the wide range of Purcell's oeuvre, from opera and funeral marches to secular songs and odes, and includes his most famous vocal works - Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher, and never more evocative of pagan loss and death; the massive 'Bell Anthem', with its ingenious opening symphony and joyful antiphon; and a miraculously serene 'Evening Hymn', Dido's opposite, death indicating hope, the treble voice swirling over the heavy ground bass like the soul released from the inert body.

it might seem quixotic to choose highlights from an exemplary collection of highlights, but the entry of the strings washing over the serene repetition of 'Be Welcome then, great Sir' always makes my heart stop still, while the musical picture of 'Bold Honour', the 'noisy Nothing, stalking shade', blocking the poet's amorous intentions in 'She loves and confesses too', adds a chilling hint of life's transience to a bouyantly bawdy song.

Brilliant Purcell Disc .......2000-11-30

With this album director and Purcell expert Robert King provides the listener with an excellent introduction to the composer's vocal works. The pieces presented here were taken from Mr. King's recordings of 'The Complete Odes and Welcome Songs', 'The Complete Anthems and Services', 'The Complete Secular Solo Songs' and diverse anthology discs. King, his wonderful soloists and musicians do the brilliance of Purcell's music fully justice. Whether he was commissioned by royalty, the church or theatre, Purcell shone in all areas. This disc certainly demonstrates the variety and originality of his craft, not to speak of his uncanny ability of setting words to music.

An outstanding Purcell offering. With a beautiful perfomance by Barbara Bonney of 'Oh, fair Cedaria'. Susan Gritton is equally captivating in 'She loves and she confesses too'. Gillian Fisher's rendition of the famous 'Dido's Lament' is haunting and poignant. Further an intelligent and brilliant 'Hosanna to the highest' by Michael George. James Bowman and Michael Chance sparkle in the countertenor duet 'Sound the trumpet' (from 'Come Ye sons of Art away'). And I should not forget to mention the joyous, luminous performance of the beautiful 'Bell Anthem'. To name but a few favourites, only James Bowman's 'Fairest Isle' was a disappointment.

Those who are familiar with Purcell's music will get an excellent disc with some of his most beloved works. If you are new to Purcell, this is, as already said a great introduction. Which might be the incentive to further explorations of Purcell.

Nice Collection Of Her RCA Years.......2006-04-18

This is a nice collection featuring Evelyn's best from her days on RCA. Blessed with a powerful voice, Eveyln King was a child prodigy who sounded way beyond her years during the 1970s. I enjoyed all of the songs presented on this CD because they aren't edited to a short 7" mix (or 45 mix from back in the day!). I would pick this CD over the newer 'Greatest Hits' because that CD includes so many edits.

Also, fans can extend this CD by including Eveyln's 3 hits from her 1988 EMI/Manhattan debut 'Flirt'...1. 'Flirt', 2. 'Hold On To What You Got', and the awesome ballad, 3. 'Kisses Don't Lie'. There's enough space on a CD to include these 3 songs, but the 'Flirt' CD is becoming harder to locate as the years go by.

EVELYN KING=Great Dance Music!.......2003-04-20

When she came on the scene as a teenager (legend has it that an executive at RCA, her early label, heard her singing while cleaning bathrooms, then signed her) she was Evelyn "Champagne" King. At the very height of her popularity she dropped the "Champagne" from her name for the albums "I'm In Love" ('81) & "Get "Loose" ('82) . This was a wise, mature decision. For some strange reason (which never made any sense to me) when she released her "Face To Face" album in '83, the "Champagne" was back in her name. Seemed like she was going backwards instead of forward because the album was somewhat juvenile & didn't show much progress on her part. The songs "Action", "Shake Down", & "Teenager" are from "Face To Face". This "Best Of" cd totally ignores songs from her "Sweet Delight" album from 1980. It would have been great if they included "Sweet Delight" & "Just A Little Bit Of Love" instead of three lackluster tunes from "Face To Face". Other notable King tunes missing are "Spirit Of The Dancer", the ballad "Till Midnight", the 60's sounding "I'm So Romantic", the singles "Let's Get Funky Tonight" & "Give It Up" (from the '85 soundtrack "Fright Night"). All in all, Evelyn put out some great songs in the late 70's & 80's. Her rival for similar music was Melba Moore on Capital Records. I recommend this cd if you like funky "old school" R&B/dance music.

I saw a program on OPB about him so I got this. But, I didn't like it and don't listen to it. It is now under my bed collecting dust.

Terrific choral renditions.......2006-01-27

I own this CD and am especially fond of it for the solos by Thomas Pyle and Clayton Krehbiel, particularly the latter's singing of "I Want to Die Easy." All other soloists and choristers are equally superb, but those two gentlemen, sadly since deceased, were personal acquaintances and musical influences. If you don't have a taste for great choral arrangements, then pass, but you'll be missing out on something special. Enjoy it, you who adore the finest.

Oh, puleeze, this is the sappiest rendition of these gorgeous songs ever recorded, right up there with sing-a-long with Mitch Miller.

I always hate when songs that are meant to be sung intimately as solos or duets are done by 7,000 harmonized voices.

I recommend this recording only to be listened to in a nice comfortable elevator

Great Drinking Music!.......2002-07-20

This CD Kicks ...! BR>The trombone riff in "Camptown Races" is incredible. The screaming axe in "Oh! Susanna" is mind-blowing. The fantastic jamming on this CD reminds me of HMTT. This CD is one monster hit after another. "Steal Away To Jesus", is a real kicker, although not quite as good as "Will You F'n Give Me Jesus".......

Just sit back, pop a cold one, maybe a whiskey shooter , pop this
baby on the victrolla and enjoy.......

One of my favorite CDs.......2000-08-09

This is one of the best recordings of historic American music that I have heard, along with Joel Cohen's "Liberty Tree." The arrangements and interpretations of the songs are very beautiful. Some of the banjos are cheesy, but it is much much better than every other Foster recordings that I have heard. If you are in the mood to hear great music of Antebellum America, than I highly recommend this CD to you. You won't regret it!

The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Fans of the Smashing Pumpkins who revel in the band's angst-ridden alt rock may well recoil in horror at this slice of pure, sweet melodicism from the band's lead guitarist, but Iha's solo debut is worthy enough to stand on its own merits. Musically, Iha's ability to effortlessly reel off one catchy acoustic pop number after another is reminiscent of Freedy Johnston. Lyrically, he's not nearly as adventurous or intriguing as Johnston. Yet, while some would no doubt classify his lovelorn ruminations as saccharine, they ultimately come across as honest and heartfelt--and, most importantly, they fit perfectly with the tone and spirit of the music. --Peter Blackstock

Iha has it..........2007-05-12

I have always loved Iha's compositions in the Smashing Pumpkins i.e. "The Boy", "Go", "Blew Away", just to name a few. His voice is just soothing and perfect for the soft acoustic guitars that accompany him. The track with Nina Gordon is great like their original duet on Aeroplane Flies High. I would shell out lots of money for a whole album of those two singing together.

Anyways, I'm glad to see that Iha is continuing on his way to producing another solo album and not accompanying the money grubbing joke that is the "new" Smashing Pumpkins.

Iha is boring.......2005-06-30

James Iha's one and only solo album is one of the most unimpressive things I've heard lately. It's not that it sounds terrible or painful, it's just inexcusably dull. Let It Come Down is about as exciting and stimulating as a glass of tap water.

His melodies are weak, his voice is mousy, and every song follows the same blueprint from the previous one. Listening to this album straight though has a numbing effect on the senses. In other words, it isn't memorable. A fluffy album full of love songs done with acoustic guitars and soft electric guitars has been done a million times over before by others and probably a million times better.

I'm fully convinced that Iha got a record deal because he used to be a in a world famous band. If these same songs were being shopped around by any other singer/songwriter, the labels would refuse this junk faster than you can say "Zwan." Seriously, man, there's nothing here. Nothing at all.

No Noisy Angst-Ridden Egomania for My Sweet James!.......2005-06-03

Just sweet, soothing, engaging melodies from the "the Quiet One" (I think of him that way, anyhow, compared to Billy Corgan!), whose work with the Smashing Pumpkins I have always enjoyed. I wish he'd put out another solo album like this!

Oh, by the way, not only is his songwriting persona very endearing, but James is very handsome, too!

Nothing wrong with love here........2004-10-19

Whilst James' voice may not be the most memorable, it really suits the lovely sound of this album. The lyrics and somewhat country infused (perhaps because of the oft-used slide guitar) pop songs are simply gorgeous. From Be Here Now to No One Is Gonna Hurt You this is an album you can have on in the background, or listen to with a loved one, or just listen to by yourself and enjoy songs of love.
Whilst I would originally agree with people who might suggest that a lot of Pumpkin's fans may not enjoy this album, I also like Pumpkins but I truly enjoy Dave Matthews Band, Coldplay, NIN, Tool, Pumpkins and I really enjoy this solo record by James Iha.
It might be a good album to fall asleep to but it can also be a great album to wake up to as well, start your day off in a good mood.
