That the most famous garage-rock record of all time, the Kingsmen's "Louie Louie," is buried on the last CD of this four-disc box is very much in keeping with the spirit of the (often) one-hit wonders that people Nuggets. Here, "Louie Louie" is just another great song. An elaboration on the 1972 double LP, which is included in its original sequence, this set piles on dozens more great moments of inspiration, guts, chutzpah, and sometimes sheer commercial calculation. How else to explain the advice "Look at yourself" from the likes of the Strawberry Alarm Clock, whose idea of mind expansion seems limited to putting together two very vaguely related nouns--"Incense and Peppermints"--so their swinging Farfisa-led track will have something, anything, for verbal content? There's loads of such wisdom on display here, prefab and otherwise, usually delivered as rabidly as possible. (Try the Remains' "Don't Look Back," Mouse and the Traps' "Maid of Sugar--Maid of Spice," or the Music Machine's "Talk Talk," which was actually a hit.) And remember: "The sky is falling / The ocean is calling / The world ... is spinning 'round ... and 'round." For sure. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Suburban and purely American and great music!!!.......2007-07-03

This is a fantastic collection. Precisely what rock'n'roll was meant to be in the 1960's: Raw,snotty,youthful-and not necessarilly "great artistic" music or "classic rock", whatever the hell that garbage is, like it degenerated into after the Sargent Pepper album came out and ruined everything about real '60's rock'n'roll. While many of these bands were indeed influenced by The Stones (not to mention The Yardbirds,Kinks, etc.), it is completely unfair to compare them to British bands, since they had an attitude and sound that was distinctively American and all their own. Sure, many of these bands were one hit wonders or no hit wonders, but so what? Most of this is great music.
And in response to some reviews saying how this can't compare to The Rolling Stones, etc., in my humble opinion, most of this is far better. Anyway, I've always thought The Stones were one of the most overrated bands of all time. Real rock'n'roll isn't supposed to be great art nor take itself all that seriously, which is exactly what happened after the overrated Sargent Pepper album came out,and in my opinion the ridiculousness of Hendrix, Jim Morrisen, etc. (Don't get me wrong, these guys were talented-just took themselves too seriously).
Anyway, I suggest buying this collection if you like raw, unpolished, sixties punk. And I also recommend the "Back From The Grave" compilations.

4 out of 5 stars Un fourre-tout de bon stock........2007-05-30

5 out of 5 stars Song upon song of rock n roll glory!.......2007-05-22

Better than just about any album I can think of, Nuggets embodies the spirit of rock and roll, captures that elusive musical zeitgeist and pins it down for all to behold and admire. The songs found on these four discs are loud, fun, catchy, colorful, occasionally beautiful and often mind-altering. Bridging the gap between pop, r&b, psychedelia, proto-punk, folk-rock, surf, and dance-craze insanity, these songs exemplify the anarchic, bouncing off the walls, let's-bash-this-sucker-out-and-have-more-fun-than-anyone-has-ever-had-before philosophy of rock and roll, assaulting (and delighting) listeners with blasts of youthful agression, boundless energy, and unfettered enthusiasm. From start to finish, its an awesome experience, and one that every self-respecting rock fan should experience at least once in his or her life- preferably once a day.

The box set's first disc (which recreates, track for track, the original Nuggets album, as compiled in 1972 by Lenny Kaye and Jac Holzman) alone is one of the greatest rock albums ever. It features absolute classics such as the Electric Prunes' "I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night)," a psych-pop call to arms whose reverbing guitars and aching vocals will resonate accross the ages, as well as the Standells' "Dirty Water," a slinking garage-rock foot stomper with a great sing-along vocal and a nasty guitar line. Orther garage-rockers include the Seeds' "Pushin' Too Hard," which boasts a wonderfully weird two-chord guitar riff and a snarling lead vocal, as well as the Count Five's ludicrously catchy Yardbirds ripoff "Psychotic Reaction" and the 13th Floor Elevators' certifiably insane "You're Gonna Miss Me." Which is to say nothing of The Chocolate Watchband's "Let's Talk About Girls," which manages to out-sneer the 'Stones, and the Amboy Dukes' cover of "Baby Please Don't Go," an absolutely hyperactive proto-metal jam-out/guitar assault. And then there are the pop classics: In "Sugar and Spice," the Cryan Shames create one of the most irrisistable love songs ever, outfitting a wonderfully dopey main melody with some playful guitars and a rhythm that will never leave your head. Ever. "Night Time" and "My World Fell Down" (by the Strangeloves and Sagittarius, respectively) make use of layer upon layer of instrumentation to create dizzying little constructions of pure radio gold, while the Castaways' "Liar Liar" does an excellent job of being as weird as it is catchy. Just listen to those vocals! Other excercizes in sheer awesomness include the Remains' "Don't Look Back," one of the many tracks on this set that can be described as "driving, emotional, and utterly cathartic." And then there are the Premiers, whose "Farmer John" matches its sheer sing-along-till-your-lungs-fall-out catchiness with wonderfully mind-numbing stupidity. The Magic Mushrooms' "It's-A-Happening" is pure googly-eyed psychedlia, and our lives are all the better for it.

The next three discs, graciously compiled by the good (very, very, good) folks over at Rhino Records, expand on Kaye and Holzman's compilation, serving up 91 more littel-known gems from the mid 60s. They, of course, rule, and it would be just about impossible to go through all the highlights here, but there are a few that just beg to be raved about: The Litter's "Action Woman" is a pounding, vicious, roaring fuzz rocker, and the Sparkles' "No Friend of Mine" is every bit as ticked off and maniacle. The Chocolate Watchband's "Are You Gonna Be There (At the Love In)" is a tough-as-nails blues pounder with a wonderfully sarcastic lead vocal and some mean guitar outbursts. The Brigands' "Would I Still Be Her Big Man" is a tense, moody stunner, with some fantastically emotional vocals. The Broques "I Ain't No Miracle Worker" is... remember how I said that a lot of the songs on this set can be described as "driving, emotional, and utterly cathartic?" Here's one of those songs. Needless to say, it's mind-bogglingly good. Ditto the Dovers' haunting, gorgeous "What Am I Gonna Do" and the Lemon Drops' dreamy "I Live in the Springtime." And if you liked "Farmer John," just wait until you hear "Double Shot (Of My Baby's Love)," one of the most heroically stupid frat-rock songs ever recorded. The Elastik Band's "Spazz," meanwhile, is utterly insane. By the way, I haven't even come close to summing up all the styles and sounds on this set. There are still all those great folk-rockers ("Little Black Egg," "Laugh Laugh"), psychedelic head-trips ("Last Time Around," "Voices Green and Purple"), earth-melting guitar storms ("Blackout of Gretely," "At the River's Edge"), and "Louie Louie," which really is its own genre. The point is, these songs are incredible. Incredible! Vital, even. Listen to 'em once, and they'll become a part of your life forever. And trust me, they make for great friends.

Plus, the set comes with an eye-wateringly good bocklet that features great essays, pictures, and band bios (including commentary on all 118 tracks!) Basically, this is a gift to any fan of rock and roll, an utterly listenable musical classic that belongs in every CD case and pair of ears on earth. Absolutely, positively, 100% essential. You need this more than oxygen.

5 out of 5 stars First Psychedelic era 1965/68.......2007-05-07

This four cd set has a great deal of yesteryear music from 1965/68. As I was there at the time, to go back to this music that has value and meaning, understanding how this type of music developed. This is a "got to have" for your collection. Even this summer there is a Hippie Fest concert tour, helping bring back this era to a new generations. L$$

4 out of 5 stars Imperative.......2007-06-06

This is the "whisky & cigs" period for Alex Chilton's vocals, a sound he abandoned as he aged (like Merlin he's going backward in time vocally...he'll die singing high register hillbilly bluegrass). Compare the vocals here to his post-Big Star "Bach's Bottom" work and his version of "Nobody's Fool" and few people would be able to identify him as the same singer.

The Stax "pop & soul" factory was in an odd passage of inspiration with The Box Tops, which it sadly had neither the management wherewithal, distribution, or vision to develop and refine. A pity, for the roots of something excellent are here, particularly in the established instantly recognizable hits this album collects.

Yet, following the slow arc of this pale firework, the fall to earth and implosion of Stax and The Box Tops gave birth the creativity and freedom that Chilton would latter profoundly offer in Big Star, his production of the Cramps, and his leadership as a low-fi and independent artist who has inspired and shaped basically anyone worth listening to since he started his musical career.

5 out of 5 stars From Memphis With . . ........2006-09-12

You've heard "The Letter", of course, and "Cry Like A Baby". And you've probably heard "Soul Deep", perhaps without realizing it was the same guys (which it really wasn't, more about which in a second). There's even an outside chance you've heard "Sweet Cream Ladies, Forward March" (whom Sweet Cream Men adore, and who should "fabricate success for those who fail", if you catch the song's subtle drift). The Box Tops released four LPs and a slew of singles in their brief career and SOUL DEEP culls the highs and some lesser material for a very good overview. In other words, this is really all you need if you're interested. But it clocks in at only 50 minutes, which means one of two things: either the sponsoring label is being really chintzy, or The Box Tops just didn't have all that much really great material. Based on what I hear here, I suspect the latter. Even the four Chilton originals are somewhat less than impressive; keeping to form they sound pretty much de rigueur with the rest of the material and don't even begin to hint at what he'd do with Big Star (I imagine they Powers That Were made sure of that). Speaking of which - - The Box Tops were pretty much a fiction, at least in the studio. The "band" was actually just Chilton with house musicians. So who chose to cover Dylan's "I Shall Be Released" so lugubriously? It's the nadir of the collection and its inclusion bogs down the latter half - - particularly after highlights as high as "She Shot A Hole In My Soul" and "Sweet Cream Ladies", who should think what they're providing and whom Puritans ignore. Chilton didn't write that one, by the way.

5 out of 5 stars soul deep.......2005-01-29

the best of the 60's group the box tops. a nice blend of soulful elements. if you like booker t. and the mg's ( green onions ) or early 70's staple singers ( i'll take you there and respect yourself ) then your sure to like this. the box tops were around from '67 - '69. the top 50 reviewer before, pd harris wrote, the only hits they had was the letter and cry like a baby, when in fact they had a couple more as well, 67's neon rainbow and '69's soul deep that did chart here in the states. a great collection by one of the great band's of the 60's. i give it 5 stars, so grab yourself a copy today.

5 out of 5 stars Two classic songs.......2004-05-04

The Box tops are best remembered for The letter and (to a lesser extent) Cry like a baby but there is more to their music than those two classics. Their music is deceptively simple soul-pop. Their lead singer, Alex Chilton, was just 16 when they recorded The letter. He left the group, still only 19, and had some domestic success with Big star - a group that didn't chart in Britain.

The letter, their debut single, was an American number one hit and also made the UK top ten. Cry like a baby, their only other American top ten hit, was also their only other UK top twenty hit. They had eight other American hits of which Soul deep was the only one to chart in Britain. Of the others, I particularly like Neon rainbow. These four tracks are the most notable, though it is worth mentioning Sweet cream ladies forward march (in praise of prostitutes - surely they're not serious?) and You keep tightening up on me (not a hit but maybe it would have been had it come earlier in the career).

This is an interesting collection of their best music. If you enjoy sixties soul-pop, you may wish to add this to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars The Box Tops provide some groovy, feel-good '60s pop........2003-01-31

One typical '60s music fan would think that a group like the Box Tops would put out a lot of good songs, many of which were minor hits, but I'm telling you, all of these songs make you feel terrific all over. From the short-lasting #1 song "The Letter", which was the band's trademark song and you can see why is because it is on every '60s music collection, to their 1970 single "You Keep Tightening Up On Me." "Neon Rainbow" is one song that will most likely stick in your head with is catchy lyrics and teh way the instruments are played and especially young Alex Chilton's rough, gravelly and one of the most famous voices of '60s music. I also enjoyed "Fields of Clover" with its psychadelic-sounding G-note on the organ at the beginning and the jumpy beat throughout. "Choo Choo Train" is one marvelous classic that will have you dancing within no time. "I Met Her In Church" is another great one that will have you shouting "Hallelujah!" soon. "Soul Deep", the title track of this album, is delightful and upbeat! Your '60s collection isn't complete without this great Box Tops compilation that provides a small sample of what the era was all about...from a great-sounding group that could have been around longer.

This collection pulls together many of the great songs from this very short time of musical history. This particular volume, though, is the best of the set. I did not get the others due to the tracks they include.

3 out of 5 stars Psychedelia and the Summer of Love.......2006-11-04

There are songs on this CD which will take you right back to the days of Flower Power, peace signs, Love In's and chemical alteration (smile). I was disappointed in a few of the tunes included - not what I would call TOP 40 at all - obsure ones. There were though, enough to get me to purchase it. I simply burned it to my computer, and deleted the few that just didn't reach me. So - if you have a hankering for remembering these days (which I will always have - and not the chemical alteration phase - just the memories of living for something larger than yourself)... buy it.

3 out of 5 stars nostalgic collection.......2004-10-26

For some, the summer of 1967 was a special moment in time. Briefly, optimism and idealism combined with youthful enthusiasm to create a feeling than change was happening all around and that anything was possible. Songs from this collection fairly represent some of the feeling of that time.

For those who lived through that brief moment, this music will likely take you back. It is pleasant nostalgia, just before violence and drug commerce made all of that change into an ugly thing. The songs are light and hopeful. For those who are interested in that time, a listen to the music from then is revealing. However, these songs are, for the most part, pretty light weight. Some are quite forgetable, and a few have aged so poorly as to make one cringe to hear them now (Eric Burdon's "trans-love airways" for example).

So this is a collection for those who want a pleasant spin down memory lane or who just want to examine that moment in the past. Others may wonder why anyone would listen to this simple stuff. Musical style has grown and progressed way past these pleasant numbers now.

4 out of 5 stars If you want it, you've got it!.......2004-05-06

This is a high quality compilation for those who really dig this genre of music. Personally, I bought the CD just for the two gorgeous songs "San Francisco" and "Love is All Around." Either one of those would be worth the price of the CD, but there are lots of classics included. A few of the tracks don't seem to stand the test of time particularly well, but may be worthwhile to those who have an historical interest.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT! FLOWER POWER AT ITS BEST........1999-06-20

The maturity of the senior tracks(San Francisco, Love is all Around, San Franciscan Nights, etc),and the gloss of the junior titles(Reach out of the Darkness, Lazy Day, Sunshine Girl)combine to make a great CD. You can almost smell the flowers and practically feel the warmth of the sun on your face.

5 out of 5 stars Mrs Henderson Presents.......2007-05-16

A very enjoyable and at times funny movie. Judi Dench gives one of her best perfomances with excellent support from the other cast members. This is a movie one could watch several times and never tire of it. AAA+++

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely infectious!!!.......2007-03-28

From start to finish, MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS is the finest collection of solid standards and George Fenton's own recreated time-period evocations, fully fleshed and skillfully performed and recorded. The talents of singer Will Young will not go unnoticed, especially in his heartbreaking rendition of ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE.Your toes will be tapping, your lips will be smiling and you will be glad that this soundtrack and wonderful film are yours! You will be transported to WW2 England and you will be humming these tunes day and night.

5 out of 5 stars A Creation and Recreation of Nostalgia.......2006-04-23

George Fenton has put together a musical score for the completely delightful MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS that is a combination of original music deeply influenced by the time of the film (London during WW II) and some of the best 'old favorite songs' from that time. In the film the music is always present, whether in the performances on the Windmill Theater stage or in the lyricism of the acting by Judi Dench, Bob Hoskins and crew.

Fenton includes such terrific oldies as Johnny Mercer's 'Goody Goody', Charles Harris' 'After the Ball', Noel Gay's 'Letting in the Sunshine', Frank Loesser's 'Blue Nightfall', and Jerome Kern's 'All the things you are'. He segues these pieces with his own fine orchestrations and the result is a score that not only enhances the mood of the film, but one that stands alone as a recording. The various performers include Camille O'Sullivan, Charlene Ford, Ciaran Connolly, Elise Audeyev, Frances Garvey, Frank Lawson, Joseph McMurray, Kate Power, Matthew Hart, Melody Squire, Rachel Lawrence, Sir Thomas Allen!, Sophie Brown, The O'Brien Sisters, Vanessa Barmby, Vicki Davids, and Victoria Hay.

This is a recording to conjure up memories not only of a successful film but also of a time when music conveyed a lot of emotion during times of stress. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, April 06

5 out of 5 stars Mrs. Henderson Presents.......2006-03-24

Met ALL my expectations, having seen/loved the film - especially the orchestration, arrangements, and vocals. Sound quality superb.
I've played this CD for others - of all age groups - all agree it's a defininte winner.

4 out of 5 stars Upbeat and Fun!.......2006-03-22

Love this CD for the nostalgia! My favorite track is "All the Things You Are" by J.Kern and O.Hammerstein. This year's Oscar telecast produced a montage of film clips to this track including the last scene from "Mrs. Henderson Presents" and it was so emotion granting as is the song. Many of the other songs are from a time period right before WWII, but they are just fun and upbeat -- it was the depression, people needed to be uplifted with such such songs as "Letting in the Sunshine" and "Goody Goody." Judi Dench was asked by someone in the bleachers at the Oscars how it felt to be nominated this year for Mrs. Henderson, and she answered back, "just listen to the soundtrack darling!" How great is that???!!!!

Album Description

This album was originally released in 1983 as the one-off collaboration between Robert Smith and Steve Severin. Includes 16 bonus rarities.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Another wasted opportunity...........2007-04-26

As with Robert Smith's Banshees album "Hyaena", this collaboration with Banshees bassist Severin is simply a wasted opportunity. It is lazy and self indulgent, and has the unmistakable stamp of drug use all over it. Many of the songs have cool arrangements, and lots of weird noises, etc. But the songs just aren't up to snuff. Topping that off are the bland beyond belief vocals of Ms Landry and you have an exotic mess of psychedelic pastiche that really holds no value. Even the bonus disc of demos with Smith's new vocals on the old demos don't hold any fascination for me, a longtime Cure fan. This one could have stayed in the vaults.

3 out of 5 stars Glove.......2007-02-16

This is an interesting album. I only like a few tracks, but they are worth the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars A Blast! An All-Time Favorite . . . + A Note About Robert Smith's Vocals.......2006-11-07

This bizarre, innovative album is simply loads of fun. A side project from Robert Smith (The Cure) and Steve Severin (Siouxsie and the Banshees), BLUE SUNSHINE is a must for fans of either of those bands. Years ago in a review of the original album, I refered to it as "sensuous gothic psychedelia" and I still think that's a pretty good description. Some of the tracks are a bit too twee for me if I'm not in the mood for 'em, but everything here is truly great. In particular, the beats are really unique and even sexy at times, and the songs are loaded with strange sounds. There's even weird little musical segueways between each track. Jeanette Landry, girlfriend of S&B drummer Budgie at the time, has a cool, unusual voice. She does most of the vocals on the original album except for 2 sung by Robert Smith.

About Disk 2:

The other reviewers here are correct: Robert Smith recorded vocals onto these demo versions recently, probably this year, 2006. The packaging is indeed deceptive; it's not entirely truthful to refer to these demos as "16 period rarities." However, Smith did give himself an out as he is quoted in the liner notes as saying " . . . singing songs that stayed in a drawer for 23 years . . ." BLUE SUNSHINE was released in 1983 - plus 23 years is 2006.

But the results are surprisingly great. Rhino should've just been honest about tacking new Smith vocals onto the original demos (singing onto the finished tracks would've been even better, but maybe that couldn't be done for legal reasons anyway). The demos themselves sound close to completion and they're actually very good (so good in fact that I suspect they received a modern update as well). The overall effect is an alternate BLUE SUNSHINE album or even some alternate reality Cure album, your imagination permitting. I especially like "Relax" (the original being one of the most hypnotically trippy tracks of all time). Robert adds some strange vocals that give it a much more unsettling effect.

The extra-album tracks are well worth the extra bucks for any fan, even if you have the original CD. The rare pictures are cool and the essay about the Glove is enlightening. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Strange Music.......2006-10-01

OK...This is my favorite album of all time. There is nothing like it. NOTHING!!! I think Robert Smith is one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Steve Severin is also great, of course. I have every album from the Cure and Siouxsie & the Banshees...BUT...this is still my favorite. Acid had a good effect on these two. Extreme psychedelia at it's finest. I love 60s psychedelia, too.. but this is better. I listen to it every day. So original with excellent sounds! When i first heard the female vocals on this album, i was disappointed because it wasn't Robert Smith, but they grew on me. I would have liked to hear Robert's 80s voice on these tracks. That would be a 10. He sounds a little worn out these days. I like the extra instrumental tracks on the 2nd CD. I always wished they were tracks of their own, and now i have them. The new RS vocals suck, but I'm elated with the improved main CD. I have to give it 5 stars because it's so good!!! If you want to enter a new dimension, listen to this. If you only like standard pop sounds, forget it.

5 out of 5 stars Superb. Who cares when the vocals were recorded?.......2006-09-23

The reviewers here who do not like the bonus disk do not understand the Cure, or more specifically, Robert Smith. I have been following the Cure since _17 Seconds_ and this is perhaps the best "Cure" album after _17 Seconds_, _Faith_, and _Pornography_. The feel of the vocals is very reminiscent of the great period around _Japanese Whispers_. The sound is tremendously colorful, playful, and loose; the lyrics are some of the best [most bizarre] RS has written; and Robert sounds like he's having fun impressing Severin. Who cares when the vocals were recorded? A few of the songs feature acoustic rhythm parts reminscent of _The Top_, but less smarmy. "The Man from Nowhere" is a double-time rhythm guitar driven instrumental that could serve as a film theme song for for some bizarre spy or superhero. On the original CD it bridged a couple of songs, muffled, but you can here it here in its entirety. It's hilarious.

4 out of 5 stars Good collection, although the title is a bit misplaced........2003-03-06

As with the New Wave and Classic Rock albums, the titles are a bit off compared to the content of the disc. They seem to have a tendency to shove in popular tunes whether they fit in or not. On the plus side, the songs are all great, and the sound quality isn't too shabby either.

All the songs are feel-good, there's a nice variety in the songs selected (nothing repetitive), and Rhino was fairly generous with the tracks. The disc totals 51 minutes 20 seconds. I could have done with a few more songs, though. If you want some of the tracks on this collection, but don't want to have to buy the individual albums, this is probably one of the best compilation discs to get. It would serve as a good introduction to '60's rock, since it does have a paragraph written on each featured artist, and a listing of where each song topped on the Billboard charts.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Song Selection.......2001-05-09

For me, Sixties rock began in 1964 with the British invasion. As such, Jimmy Soul's semi-novelty "If You Wanna Be Happy" and Little Eva's girl group smash "The Loco-Motion"--though a terrific song--doesn't really fit. And the Isley Brothers' "Shout-Part 1" was released in 1959! [It would have made more sense to include Joe Dee and the Starlighters' cover version which went Top 10 in 1961.]

With that said, this is a terrific collection of some of the best songs of the mid-Sixties. Nearly half of these songs--tracks 1, 4, 5, 7, 8, 14, 16, 17 and 19--made music critic Dave Marsh's book "The 1001 Greatest Singles Ever Made." [P.S. - "Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" is the final track on this 20-song collection.]

While many of these tracks have been recycled ad nauseum for decades on various anthologies, Rhino does a nice job of packaging them with an informative--if somewhat brief--set of liner notes and as always uses excellent source tapes throughout. My only complaint is that a single disc is too brief. This could easily have been a double-disc set without any drop off in quality or even made into a series like Rhino's earlier Top Rock Hits or Have a Nice Day series. But two years after this disc's original release, that doesn't seem likely. So if these songs are missing from your collection, this is a cost effective way to remedy that. RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars Groovy, baby!.......2000-01-08

I think this is a very groovy, well-blended '60s CD. My favorites on this CD are "These Boots Are Made For Walking", "If You Wanna Be Happy", "You Really Got Me", and "O Pretty Woman", but I love every other track except two. I don't like "Happy Together" and "I Only Want To Be With You". I'm only a teenager, but I'm really into '60s music, so I highly recommend this CD. If you really love the '60s sound, I would also recommend Smash Mouth's "Astro Lounge" to you.

4 out of 5 stars +1/2 -- Fantastic debut LP from '60s pop legends.......2006-01-16

No matter how many times you read it, it's nearly impossible to picture a 16-year-old Alex Chilton providing the growling, whiskey-and-smoke vocals of "The Letter." The stories of how his producers got that tone are legendary, but even still, it's difficult to associate such an assured delivery with someone who's only sixteen. Even more incredible is that Chilton sustained this across the group's entire debut album, and the band and studio hands provided superbly soulful backings throughout. There are a few spots where Chilton strains to sound soulful, such as on Bobby Womack's "Gonna Find Somebody," but for the most part he's astonishingly accomplished.

Beyond the two hits ("The Letter" and "Neon Rainbow"), Chilton lent his Memphis pop soul to fine covers of signature songs by Dionne Warwick ("Trains & Boats & Plains"), Procol Harum ("A Whiter Shade of Pale"), James & Bobby Purify ("I'm Your Puppet"); as a mark of their quality, none will have you racing to hear the originals. Chilton's soulful take on John D. Loudermilk's country-blues "Break My Mind" is likewise outstanding, and the rest of the album was penned by Wayne Carson Thompson (who wrote "The Letter" and "Neon Rainbow"), and the album's producer, Dan Penn, and his Muscle Shoals writing partner Spooner Oldham.

Unlike many 60s teen bands, the Box Tops followed up their initial hit with several excellent albums. Sundazed's reissue of their debut LP augments the original dozen tracks with a quartet of bonuses that include a non-LP single ("Turn on a Dream"), the mono single mixes of the two hits, and the previously unreleased "Georgia Farm Boy." Jud Cost's liners give a light introduction to the group's formation and the rise of "The Letter" to hit status. More detail on the group members and the recording of the album would have been welcome, but the period photos and reproductions of Mala 45 labels are nice touches. 4-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings. I was having a pretty hard time looking for several of the songs on this CD. I tried several music services and finally found it at Amazon. The CD is very good quality and plays perfect. There are only three songs on it that I care for but that is typical of CD's and me. If you are looking for the song "Reach out of the Darkness" this is the CD for you. This was the only place I could find that song.

Here is another terrific recording by the aptly named Amazing Rhythm Aces. This "amazing" band has recorded some of the best American music produced over the past 3+ decades. Russell Smith has, in cooperation with band mates and others, written some of his best songs for this set. The songs here compare with those on "Too Stuffed To Jump", "The Amazing Rhythm Aces", and all of the other masterpieces this band has given us. I recommend this CD to all lovers of great music. You can never go wrong with the "Aces".

5 out of 5 stars "classical music's greatest Ambassador...Arthur Fiedler!".......2001-07-14

When you think of classical music, Boston Pops and all-around-good listening...only one name rose above the rest ~ Arthur Fiedler! Not only did he have the best arrangements...but kept up with the times...everything from The Beatles, Gershwin, Henry Mancini, Carmichael, Stevie Wonder, Kern and Raksin...the list could go on...Fiedler brought classical into another dimension, before only the adults were the fans...with his imagination and personality...looked into the hearts of young Americans...and yes, you guessed it...won them over!

This CD is living proof...take a group of popular standards...Richard Hayman (arranger) and the rest will fall into place...Fiedler and the Pops give each tune life, exciting and beautiful melodies prevail...never before had such popularity with concerts and appearances, combining classical with tunes of today existed...but with the waving of his wan a new standard was born.

This recording is 1956 to 1974 performances...the entire 18 track selections are outstanding...leaving a rich legacy for all to enjoy now and years to come...this album is a rarity with you the music-lover in mind.
