Although it squarely falls in the "jukebox musical" category, Jersey Boys doesn¹t try to integrate its songs in an artificial plotline. The show tells the story of the early-1960s group the Four Seasons, and the musical numbers tend to be introduced in context, as when songwriter Bob Gaudio comes up with a tune, or the quartet performs a show. This allows Jersey Boys to flow better than some of ill-fated peers, and the actors can shine without having to bend backward to accommodate an inane book. The show's most (only) daring move is to start with a hip-hop-tinged French-language version of "December 1963 (Oh, What a Night)," an actual hit in France in 2000. After that it's all VH1-biopic territory, but it's done with so much flair, taste and energy that the ride's a fun one. The Four Seasons had enough hits ("Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Rag Doll," etc.) to easily fill an evening at the theater, so it's left to the cast to do right by them. And it does, particularly John Lloyd Young as the band¹s star lead, Frankie Valli. Young hits all the falsetto notes and brings real freshness to the part. His "Can¹t Take My Eyes Off You," a second-act peak, is signed, sealed and delivered with a star's acumen. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

Recounting the rich history and reliving the timeless sounds of the phenomenal Frankie Vallie & The 4 Seasons, the new Broadway musical Jersey Boys answers the musical-and philosophical question, "How did four would-be wise guys from Newark, NJ, become one of the greatest chart-topping successes in pop music history?" Jersey Boys celebrates legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito, and Nick Massi who, as the 4 seasons, wrote their own songs, invented their own identity, and sold 175 million records worldwide-all before they were 30.

5 out of 5 stars Jersey Boys-original broadway cast recording.......2007-07-26

Fabulous! I loved that they included much of the dialog from the show and the music was impeccable.

3 out of 5 stars Jersey Boys (2005 Original Broadway Cast).......2007-07-19

Singers doesn't try to make the same sound the same original. The music sounds like the voices don't care about what they are doing. I was kinda disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Jersey Boys.......2007-07-08

Purchased CD prior to seeing the show when visiting USA in '06. A fun lively show - the CD now captivates those fond memories of not only the foot tapping music & show but also our special time in New York.

Have seen the play twice. This album lets me relive the experience anytime anyplace. A great piece of Rock n roll history.

5 out of 5 stars A step back in musical time.......2007-07-05

My wife and daughter didn't know about the Four Seasons but I did. When I told them I wanted to see the musical on stage, there was no interest so I bought this product and they heard it in the car. We went to the stage musical soon after and we have listened to the entire disk so many times I've lost track. I created a Four Seasons monster in my daughter. She's fifteen and has memorized most of the songs and sings along while we are driving somewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Great Listening.......2007-07-11

Back in college, I listened to Aerosmith and Belinda Carlisle more than anything else. She was my nerve-soothing music that I listened to when I needed to unwind, or when I wanted to be relaxed for a test. She has a lot of great material. This CD covers maybe half of it. Get this one, and then look for a few others. My favorite is "Heaven is a Place on Earth". I first heard that on the radio as a kid, and always wondered who sang that awesome song. Now I found her. You can't go wrong with this CD. If you are first getting into her music, this is a great place to start.

4 out of 5 stars Belinda Carlisle - Greatest hits..........2006-01-10

An excellent collection! The only reason why I don't give this collection Five Stars is that "the powers that be" failed to give us both the Solo and "Gogo's" songs featuring Belinda Carlisle on 1 (maybe 2?) CD's!! Now, that would have rated Five+ Stars. 'Till that day - Four stars!! Bravo, Belinda!!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful collection .......2006-01-08

Belinda Carlisle's greatest hits from her four I.R.S. and MCA solo albums just showed her growth. Most of the attention has been on major hits Heaven Is A Place on Earth and Mad About You, but my true favorite from her is Circle in The Sand, which is on here. I still love that song any time it plays in a store or if I play it on a stereo. Imagine yourself on a beach when you hear that song instead of just straight up listening to it. It has such an airy landscape for a pop song, and I like the acoustic guitar playing on it as well as the sound effects of water splashing on the beach. I remembered hearing it a lot between April and June of 1988. This made me accept Belinda more as an artist and more than just being in the Go-Go's. Carlisle matured a lot on the '87 album and just got better on the next couple of albums. While her later stuff hasn't created the buzz as her first efforts, this is a good collection of Belinda's best records.

5 out of 5 stars The Classy Ex Go Gos Singer Can Really Rock!!!.......2005-12-11

I just love this album which proves that Belinda Carlisle is more than just another pretty face although I do like the Playboy magazine that she appeared in. My favourite track on this album would have to be "Mad About You" with it's very effective bass guitar introduction which sounds like the beating heart of a woman in love! Belinda is HOT and she can really ROCK!!!

Taking a page from the Marianne Faithfull playbook, Belinda Carlisle exchanges exuberance for sophistication on Voilà. Sung entirely in French, Carlisle's first CD in a decade celebrates the sturdy song form known as chanson. From the legendary Edith Piaf ("La Vie En Rose") to '60s songbird François Hardy ("Ma Jeunesse Fout Le Camp") to playful provocateur Serge Gainsbourg ("Contact"), Carlisle tackles 11 favorites. If Faithfull's Strange Weather, a torched-up collection of covers, makes perfect sense in retrospect, Voilà also seems like a natural progression for Carlisle, though some Go-Go's devotees may be startled by the departure. More surprising than her accent, which is actually quite good, are the arrangements, like Gainsbourg's "Bonnie et Clyde" reinvented as echoey electronica or Hardy's "Pourtant Tu M'aimes" as hard-driving pop. Carlisle's versatile collaborators include Brian Eno (keyboards), Natacha Atlas (vocals), and Fianchna O'Braonain (guitar, vocals) from the Hothouse Flowers. Traditionalists may balk at the Irish and Middle Eastern touches, but Carlisle's genuine affection for the material should win over most skeptics. Her distinctive vibrato, particularly on Jacques Brel's heartbreaking "Ne Me Quitte Pas" ("If You Go Away") and Charles Aznavour's flamenco-flavored "Jezebel," has never sounded quite so full and throaty. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Album Description

Belinda Carlisle's "Voila," her first new album in a decade, and her first sung entirely in French, is a radical departure for the pop diva and leader of the Go-Gos. Carlisle has fashioned an album that pays tribute to classic French songs of the `40s, `50s and `60s and proves good songs are universal and need no translation to work their exhilarating magic.

"Voila" contains a bonus disc with English versions of four tracks from the album. Bonus tracks include "I Still Love Him," "La Vie en Rose," "Bonnie and Clyde" and "If You Go Away."

2 out of 5 stars Oh boy, that pronounciation............2007-07-23

If you are used to listening to French songs sung by the French, and you know French, this disc will .... startle you. Still, I was looking forward to hearing "Merci Cherie", which was originally sung by an Austrian (Udo Juergens), winning the annual "Eurovision" chanson contest in the late 1960s. What a disappointment Belinda's rendition is- I wish she'd stuck to English songs! I love her solo work from the 1980's. The only thing I like about this album is the cover art. She continues to look marvelous! Try Mireille Mathieu, Francoise Hardy, or France Gall.

5 out of 5 stars Great songs, great singing.......2007-06-09

Some of these are great older French songs that were originally hits for such singers as Edith Piaf, Brigitte Bardot, Ute Lemper, and Nina Simone. This album is Belinda's homage to her adopted country. I am very happy to have this new Belinda Carlisle album. I also love B.B., and it was wonderful to hear B.B. songs on the album. I'm sure Belinda recorded them in part because of her personal love of B.B., with whom she shares a commitment to animal rights and a belief that all life is sacred. Belinda knows that animals are God's creations; that He gave them great beauty, grace, charm, and rigorously logical minds. She knows that he who kills an animal, destroys one of God's miracles, and that that makes God unhappy. Belinda is a beautiful woman, inside as well as out, and I love her, and I love her music. I hope that she keeps singing for decades to come.

4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect.......2007-04-28

One of my favorite bands from the '80s was the Go Go's. Their music was fun and catchy. I liked some of Belinda Carlisle's solo work. I recently came across Belinda's latest album "Voila" which is a French album, how appropo since she lives in France. I was pleasantly surprised to hear how good the album is since a lot of crossover albums basically rots in my personal opinion. Belinda's Parisian album worked for the most part in terms of achieving that sensuous Parisian feel. There were a couple of tracks I was not too keen on like "Bonnie Et Clyde" and "Jezebel". I didn't care for "Bonnie Et Clyde" because I found the melodies so irritating and as much as this pains me to say this but Belinda's vocals grates on my nerves on this particular song. The bonus disc with the english versions of some of the songs were okay but I definitely prefer the Parisian versions. My favorite song on this album has to be "Sous Le Ciel De Paris". I found the melodies difficult to get out of my head. Although I do not understand a lick of French, I just loved hearing Belinda Carlisle sing the lyrics. I also loved the added touch of the accordion. Despite not liking a couple of songs on the album, "Voila" is still a lot of fun to listen to. In this day and age of disposable pop acts, it is always great to see someone I grew up on like Belinda Carlisle put out some new music.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good!.......2007-04-25

I really enjoy this CD. I think Belinda's voice sounds very good in french.

3 out of 5 stars Carlisle's French attempt.......2007-04-10

I was excited for another record from one of my favorites from the past. However, Belinda's sultry voice is best showcased on english tunes. Romance, Parisan flair, and sensuality were all but lost. Quel dommage. A bit disappointing, but saved by "I Love Him", "La Vie En Rose (english version)" and some jazzed up acoustics.

5 out of 5 stars Bursting with Visceral Life and Earthy Joy!.......2007-02-16

Hard to believe we can buy this precious gem for under $10 -- and what a gem it is! Easily my favourite medieval music CD. This isn't museum music, or a cerebral esoteric dip into European medieval cultures. This music leaps out and grabs you -- recalling images of everything from the still smile of a 13th-century Madonna to the chaos of Breugel and Bosch. Belinda Sykes' voice is alive with earth, grit, heat, and a transcendent beauty that needs to be experienced to be believed. The musicians are magicians: they'll have you dancing, singing, praying -- getting your bare feet soiled in the hot holy dust of a pilgrim's trail: enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Unexpected delight.......2006-08-29

Not sure what I was expecting, but this is a very refreshing collection. Hypnotic and robust at the same time. Two thumbs up -- 'at's all I got.

5 out of 5 stars Would be Worth Buying at Three Times the Price.......2006-02-19

One of the hidden gems of the Naxos catalog are the series of recordings of Medieval music by the Ensemble Unicorn with Michael Posch. The music they choose to record here comes from the 14th century Llivre Vermell de Monstserrat preserved there in an codex of five parts. The book resulted from an attempt to set contemporary popular music to spiritual texts to help to reach out to a wider audience.

This CD is exemplary in every possible way. The liner notes written by Michael Posch himself are superb. Furthermore, the recorded sound quality is pretty much audiophile grade and runs rings around those produced by major record labels for the fraction of the price. The music making is beautiful, evocative and fascinating with all performances having the intensity and brilliance you can always count on from this superb ensemble.

Very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Here's my two cents.......2006-02-10

Let me add my two cents to the laudatory reviews already given. I bought this CD some time ago when I was developing an interest in early music. The title and the theme fascinated me. Also it was inexpensive, and I know from my experience that NAXOS, even though inexpensive, delivers quality goods. I was not the least disappointed. This is the music of an important era in history brilliantly performed by Unicorn Ensemble and Belinda Sykes. Belinda Sykes deserves to be better known than she is. She has a marvelous voice, and her delivery is without peer. When she sings, I am transported back to the days of those pilgrims whose songs she is singing. This music is not like other music. at times it may seem raucous. Just keep in mind the epoch from which these songs come. Open your mind. I assure you that you will be transformed.

5 out of 5 stars a window on another world.......2005-12-05

I picked up this cd because of a family connection with the Black Madonna of Monserrat. She's an integral part of the religious life of my dad's hometown. I thought the cd would make a good present for my dad but I didn't really expect the music to be anything special. However, I was simply blown away upon listening to it. This is an incredible blend of voice, rhythm and percussion that conveys the earthiness and transcendence of peasant pilgrim experience. I'm not a fan of early music -- I don't dislike it, I just don't know that much about it. Most of the early music I have listened to, however, is nowhere near as textured and intricate as these songs. What's amazing to my ears is that arrangements manage to sound both ancient and startlingly contemporary at the same time. I'm betting that sooner or later, someone will be giving these songs a trance-music treatment -- if that hasn't already happened.

4 out of 5 stars A surprise for your expectations and worth buying.......2007-02-18

I first saw/heard Belinda on Christmas Day 2006 with her singing "Ni Freud Ni Tu Mama" on TV. I didn't know who she was, but a couple weeks later I heard the song again and when I found out who it was, I decided to buy the cd with the expectation that only that song would be worth listening to. I'm happy to say that there are a lot of really good songs on the cd, none quite as driven as "Ni Freud" but still likable anyway. The overall mix of sounds that she sings on her album are eclectic, but they don't define her style or sound definitively, and with the exception of "Ni Freud" none of them make her stand out as an artist in any particular genre, probably because this is the trend for many "crossover debuts" of artists in the Latin music community (spanish and english songs) almost as if they are trying to cater to too many listeners.
Even still, this album for the most part is a solid production, good listening to and it was worth my money even as a non-latino. Check it out!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD!!!!!!.......2007-01-31

Although I dont like Belinda, I really like her music. This cd is AWSOME!!! I really like her first album but this one is more mature and way better. There is no doubt that she has an aswome voice! and she proofs it in this cd. one of her best songs, in my opinion, is NI FREUD NI TU MAMA, LUZ SIN GRAVEDAD, SEE A LITTLE LIGHT, and my favorite, PUDO SER TAN FACIL!
I recommend everyone to buy this album, you won't be disappointed!!!

5 out of 5 stars Belinda Gets Older and Improves.......2006-12-17

Belinda's new CD Utopia is alot more mature than her last CD debut album Belinda. With not as many young power pop songs she focuses on darker rocky songs. Overall i thought that she produced a fantasitic album but, i think she needs to get rid of her rap songs.

Utopia- 5/5 a great starter for the CD slow but catchy.

Ni Freud Ni Tu Mama- 5/5 the first single of this CD and deffinitley one of my favorites. A great song to rock out to with a very catchy beat.

See a Little Light- 2 1/2/5 Deffinitley one of her weekest..not that impressive. The vocal pitches were a little off

Bella Tracion-5/5 One of the best! Fast, catchy, rocky, fun, pop song! I must liked

Contigo O Sin Ti- 4/5 very different..but i like it. I don't really like Nicole Schnizer's voice in it..but not including that, fun/ different.

Alguien Mas-4/5 a darker song..more dreary but great vocals!

Quein es Feliz-5/5 Great pop song ! fun beat and catchy great to fool around with! who is happy? a great song!

Pudo Ser Tan Facil-2/5 Never listen to this song..not that fun more of a dark sad song.

Noche Cool-4/5 fun up beat little rappy song..i like the beggining of the song but after that is it ok.

Amiga Soledad-4/5 I nice melodic song about her dog that died.:( nice

Good...Good-2/5 One of the WORST horrible but some parts are ok

Luz Sin Gravedad (See A Little Light in Spanish) 4/5 much better than the English version.

Never Enough-4/5 a fun song but stupid lyrics..ok..

5 out of 5 stars My Best CD!.......2006-10-18

I cannot undestand a word of spanish, but for this CD you don't need to. Belinda's voice is all that matters. This cd is the best I own (along with my Instant Star Soundtracks)She is such a wonderful singer, and a few of her songs have both Spanish and English. I love every single song on this CD, but my personal favorite is Contigo O Sin Ti (which translates into With You Or Without You) I LOVE the music. This song is both english and spanish, I listen to it non-stop. I can't wait for her next CD (that is hoping she makes another). YOU ROCK BELINDA!

5 out of 5 stars Belinda's GREATEST!.......2006-10-09

i think this is her overall GREATEST album. The first was very good but UTOPIA tops it! *proof that's she's growing up into her music.

4 out of 5 stars 80's fun INDEEDY!.......2005-08-28

Belinda's first albumn was bright fun in the sunnier days of the 80's! Hook filled throughout, you can't help to hear the songs in your head long after you turn off the CD. Mad About You, I Need a Disguise and Band of Gold with the incredible Freda Payne are just a few chestnuts you will find on this collection. Classic pop like this doesn't get any better. And the remixes tagged on to the end are great as well. Made me remember going to record store and seeing Belinda in that Red frilly dress with the gold frame around her as I purchased the 12"inch single. Memories indeed............

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic debut from a gifted vocalist.......2005-07-25

When Belinda Carlisle left the Go-Go's and started to work on her own solo career, music fans all over the world knew that she wouldn't trade on the formula that had made her former band so famous : uplifting, carefree pop-rock songs, with a punky attitude.

What her fans got, however, was a much slicker, more mature and more diverse package than they expected. Songs like "Mad about you" (whose intro sounds exactly like the Go-Go's "This old feeling", by the way !), "I feel the magic", "Gotta get to you", "Shot in the dark" and "I need a disguise" did fall into the more predictable category of what was expected of Carlisle at the time; and not surprisingly, she handled them exceptionnally well, especially the uplifting and spirited "I feel the magic". However, there was much more to this album; the attentive listener will admit that the real showstoppers on this album are its ballads. From the heartbreaking "Since you've gone" right to the beautiful and serene "Stuff and nonsense" (the latter possibly featuring Belinda's most expressive vocals ever), the slower-paced numbers proved that Carlisle was a gifted pop vocalist. A mid-tempo number like "I never wanted a rich man", with its lovely melody and fine vocal harmonies, is also one of the album's many highlights. Perhaps it's because nobody expected her to perform that kind of material, but it worked magic - and it still does, twenty years later.

The album had much success in North America and was certified gold; "Mad About You" became a top 5 smash single, and "I feel the magic" and "Band of gold" were released afterwards (with considerably less impact on the charts). Of course, Belinda hit the jackpot with the meatier, harder-edged sound of "Belinda"'s follow-up (the worldwide smash "Heaven on earth", another gem worth checking out); but "Belinda" is a fantastic debut nonetheless, proving that she had grown into a credible artist.

It is worth mentionning that this long-awaited reissue features a few bonus tracks (and unfortunately, a different cover than the original release); the extended remix of "Mad About You" is fine, and it's nice to hear the single version of "Band of gold" (this time performed as a duet with the original performer of the song, Freda Payne); however, the two additional mixes of "Band of gold" are just not worth it, especially given the single's poor performance on the charts. Completists will be happy about their inclusion, though - but the rest of the album stands just as fine on its own.

1 out of 5 stars A disappointing CD from a great singer........2004-12-23

I guess there's a reason Belinda Carlisle doesn't sing any songs from this CD live anymore except Mad About You- that's the only great song on the CD. Well, Band of Gold is pretty decent, but the rest is pure filler. It's incredible to see how much Belinda changed after this album. She left the record label that released this CD and then recorded Heaven on Earth and Runaway Horses, both superior albums with a plethora of catchy dance hits and beautiful ballads. This CD is for die-hard fans only!

4 out of 5 stars Nice Remaster, Giddy 80's Fun.......2004-11-07

Okay, the squatty cover photo is not at all flattering (the original cover sported a leggy pose showing off Belinda's newly svelte physique), and the songs & production definitely remain a product of the mid-80's. But this is a very enjoyable disc, finally available with a solid remaster. Despite early skeptics ("Belinda Carlisle as a SOLO artist?") it's no wonder this album was a hit. Belinda's physical makeover was the best of the entire decade (America luuuuuvs a good make-over!) and "Mad About You" was a perfect summer song with a stylish video. Although the album's worthy second single "I Feel the Magic" failed to repeat the chart success of the first, this newly fabulous California girl had already proven her point. And her biggest successes would follow with her next disc "Heaven on Earth." Still I wonder if the melodramatic "Since You've Gone" might've been a better choice as the album's second single; sometimes a ballad is a good way to follow a danceable hit. Anyway, the remaster of "Belinda" sounds great, emphasizing 60's and Motown influences while showcasing Carlisle's improved vocal skills. The clarity of the sound and the bounciness of the songs make it hard not to bop along, even when things get a little slight. Belinda's tiny, chipper voice won't make anyone forget Freda Payne's original "Band of Gold" especially when Freda guest-stars on the extended mix, blowing poor Belinda away, but it's a great song that always begged for an up-tempo treatment. The extended version of "Mad About You" is a real treat for fans, of course. Sadly, this reissue misses a golden opportunity to include the single remix of "I Feel the Magic," which brought Charlotte Caffey's sprightly piano work to the forefront with Belinda's ebullient vocals. The piano is buried on the album version, robbing the song of some of its pop energy. And it would've been nice to get one of Belinda's hard-to-find soundtrack songs added here, maybe "In My Wildest Dreams" from Mannequin or "Dancing In the City" from Burglar. Complaints aside, this is a very welcomed reissue. Good clean summer fun. Highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars This is the only bad Belinda Carlisle CD!.......2004-04-12

I'm a huge Belinda Carlisle fan, but this CD is just not good. The only good songs are Mad About You, Gotta Get to You, and I Feel the Magic, and fortunately, these three songs are available on Her Greatest Hits CD, so this album isn't essential for Belinda fans. The songs aren't catchy, the production is weak, and the material simply doesn't fit Belinda. Every other Belinda CD is worth getting, but this one is the bottom of the barrel.

5 out of 5 stars The Whole Thing.......2007-05-10

If there's an earlier 'Peer Gynt' recording that's complete (as opposed to just the 'suite') I've never heard of it. This is the entire incidental music to the play, not just the usual 'Dawn', 'The Hall of the Mountain King' 'Solveig's Song', etc.
Jarvi's reading is smooth and incisive and the choral parts are wonderful. I've never heard a scarier version of HOTMK. I never even knew that there was a solo vocal part for Peer himself, but here it is.

My only complaint-and it's a tiny one-is that the selections are not in the order that they would appear in Ibsen's play. But that's picking a very small nit indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Beautiful.......2007-03-11

Conductor Paavo Jarvi does a masterful job of leading the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra plays with great emotion and precision creating an exciting and almost hypnotic effect. Although Beecham's version is very good, his Peer Gynt does not come close to matching the sheer beauty of Jarvi's.
The soloists on this album are outstanding. I consider baritone Peter Mattei to be the most talented baritone of his type today and his rendition of Peer Gynt's Serenade is nothing short of incredible. Soprano Camilla Tilling as Soveig has a lovely ethereal sound to her voice which is used to great effect in her songs. Tilling has the loveliest female voice I have ever heard. Mezzo Charlotte Hellekant has also grown on me as Anitra. Many of these vocal songs are not included on other versions of Peer Gynt, which is a great shame. The choir, something I don't usually enjoy, is very impressive.
I would rate this CD as by far the best version of Peer Gynt and perhaps my favorite CD of all time. The sound quality of the recording should also be mentioned because it is absolutely stunning.

3 out of 5 stars Good-enough readings but outstanding sound.......2007-02-21

I don't find that Paavo Jarvi and his Estonian forces have much to say in the familiar numbers from Peer Gynt. You must turn to Beecham for sheer delight in famous numbers like In The Hall of the Moutain King, Morning, Anitra's Dance, and so on. Where this recording scores is in the unfamiliar numbers; Peter Matteo's excellent rendition of the little-known Peer Gynt's Serenade is one highlight, as is the convincingly crude folk fiddling that begins half a dozen numbers.

Secondly, there's the sound. The engineers have achieved quite exceptinally clear, open sonics that I've never heard the like of in Peer Gynt. Even when Jarvi's conducting is ordinary and his Estonian musician ae playing at far less than virtuosic level, the gorgeous sounds coming out of one's speakers remain alluring. As far as completeness goes, the Ruud 2-CD set from Bis is unchallenged.

4 out of 5 stars Passionate.......2006-08-18

The story line gives the listener a guide to follow the music, but the score leaves out the connections for the listener to only imagine the performance. The music is passionate and descriptive and introduces the listener to the singing voices of parts of the presentation that are left out in the "Suite." I appreciate hearing it over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe this is THE (one disc-) Peer Gynt album to own ..........2006-02-15

... to keep closely beside the gorgeous, incisively intelligent and deeply concentrated performance (also on 1 CD) with Esa-Pekka Salonen conducting the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and Barbara Hendricks singing the role of Solveig (Sony Classical).
Together with the recordings by Neeme Jarvi (27 cues; DGG), Marriner (only 12 cues; EMI), Tate (17 cues; EMI), Blomstedt (19 cues; Decca), Dreier (the first truly complete recording of all of the original music (1978); 32 cues, including 'Bridal Procession', 'Solveig's Song' and three 'Norwegian Dances' all of them n o t originally written for the play; Unicorn UKCD + NKFCD) and Ruud (the first complete recording with 29 cues plus all of the dialogue, making a total of 51 cues, coming up on 113 minutes; BIS), these two (1-CD) albums by Paavo Jarvi and Esa-Pekka Salonen are as complete as can get concerning this so called 'incidental' music for the Henrik Ibsen play of Peer Gynt. Nowadays, Peer Gynt is Norway's No. 1 national epic, thereby giving this music extra significance and poignancy. Originally, there are in all some twenty-six numbers of incidental music for the play: almost ninety minutes of music, as can be learned from the booklet-essay. And according to the booklet, twenty of those are on this album; No. 5, 10, 11, 14, 18 and 24 are left out of this recording. 'Solveig's Song' wasn't originally written for the stage play but nonetheless included as such on this CD, so actually 19 original pieces from Peer Gynt, op. 23 are on this album, and not 20. But anyhow, such 'criticism' would amount to nitpicking ;-)
Here I would like to warn the reader that this will be a somewhat one-sided review, as I have only ever heard the Peer Gynt-recordings of Esa-Pekka Salonen, Per Dreier (freshly inspired, very natural performances) and this newest one of Paavo Jarvi. So this review is, for what it is worth, a personal and somewhat subjective approach, leaving out many other alternatives ...

Anyhow, as for the one-CD albums of Peer Gynt, op. 23, the merits of the Salonen/Oslo Philharmonic album (aside from the artistic ones, which are huge, as well as spot on as far as the 'Nordic' atmosphere of the music is concerned) lie in the fact that - up to now - it has been as near 'complete' a rendering of the music for Peer Gynt - as much as fits on one CD - as one might wish, covering the whole dramatic arc of the play from beginning to end (but without any of the spoken dialogue). I believe that this new recording with Paavo Jarvi is even more complete - as could be fitted on one disc - and gives the listener an even better feel of the drama of the play, if only because there is more singing here, namely by Peer Gynt (in the delightful 'Peer Gynt's Serenade'). Also, one hears here seldomly recorded, but wonderfully evocative pieces, such as 'Peer Gynt and the Woman in Green', 'Peer gynt: you can tell great men by the style of their mounts', 'Peer Gynt at the Statue of Memnon' (similar to 'Prelude Act III: Deep in the Coniferous Forest' on the Salonen/Oslo Philharmonic album. Actually it is the same piece, but it was never intended as the prelude to act III) and 'The Shipwreck'. Simply delightful, all this! As are all the soloists - truly, the best one could wish for! - singing in this recording. If I may steal a quote from Tim Ashley, The Guardian, May 13, 2005: "Peter Mattei is the swollen-headed Peer, Camilla Tilling a dignified, unsentimental Solveig and the incomparable Charlotte Hellekant a camp but lethally seductive Anitra." But although Camilla Tilling's Solveig is superb, IMHO she is not as completely involved-sounding or as convincing in the projecting of the troubled mind and heart of (especially the elderly) Solveig as does Barbara Hendricks for Esa-Pekka Salonen.
Even more than Esa-Pekka Salonen's performance with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, this recording offers the listener a more 'true to the letter-performance', as the music is here performed as heard during the play, as witnessed by 'Solveigs vuggevise' ('Solveig's Cradle Song'), where her singing is interlaced with the 'Whitsun Hymn', which, to the ears of this listener, only heigtening the sense of drama and storytelling.
All in all a fantastic album, I believe, and one that brings into focus the drama even more than other recordings of this music. Even though the orchestral playing of the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra is maybe a (slight) nodge below that of the Oslo Philharmonic under Salonen and missing out on the deepest or finer layers of melancholy and dramatic tension (which are indeed touched upon by Salonen, I think), it is warmly sympathetic and more lush (as is the acoustics of the recording venue).
The really adventurous or Peer Gynt-completists (and once taken this step, the all too brief Suites will never be an option again!) should really go for Dreier or Ruud - this last one is said to be simply magnificent (music as well as acting) - but this generous one disc album, with some of the most gorgeous playing and singing, is warmly recommended (at least, in my opinion) to anyone who loves this wonderfully evocative music. Delightful!

5 out of 5 stars Belinda Carlisle-Haven't heard a song that I didn't like.......2005-02-19

Belinda Carlisle was one of the foremost rock/pop songtresses of the eighties. Although her US star faded in the US in the early nineties, she continued releasing albums in England. I have purchased some of those as well, and they have been just as good as her original hits. Not quite sure why she faded in the US, but her work is still top notch.

5 out of 5 stars Belinda Rocks The World.......2005-01-15

Former Go-Go's vocalist's second solo in 1987 is truly the album made in heaven. It is also well-produced one. Title track HEAVEN IS A PLACE ON EARTH became #1 so this album has been remembered by this huge hit but album has more of great sing-along tracks. Started her music career as a punker some of the track choice is really punkish as shown in I FEEL FREE or NOBODY OWNS ME. GO-GOs styled FOOL FOR LOVE will get your feet dancing. Great songwriters adds the album grace such as Diane Warren penning I GET WEAK which became another huge hit.

Must-have album for female vocalist connoisseurs and highly recommended for Avril Lavigne, Michelle Branch, Carly Simons
and Alanis Morissette fans.

4 out of 5 stars With Heaven being a place on earth.............2004-10-02

Oooh baby do you know what thats worth?
Belinda's second and most successful album is a wonderful piece
of work!I firmly believe that Heaven Is A Place On Earth is one
of the best songs ever made. Its one of those songs when played
in the right circumstances can seriously give you chills! On the
whole, the album is slightly on the 80s side (obviously since
it came out in 1987) with songs like Fool For Love and Nobody
Owns Me, they both have really good guitar work though.
But it has a sort of heavenly feel to it.
On a more negative note, I felt that We Can Change
was stupid and corny (Come on Belinda!)
Miss Carlisle does occasionally linger dangerously over the line
between beautiful and cheesy. Thats the only critism I can give
her. Many people have said shes not a good singer, I disagree
she may not have the amazing voice but she sings with a great
deal of passion and that makes her great. I'm a big fan of her
and although this album isn't her best (I believe that honour
belongs to Runaway Horses) it's still Belinda and I wouldn't ask
for anything more!
And it's definitely worth getting! whether you love her or just

want to add something to your cd collection!

4 out of 5 stars Heaven is a place on "Belinda"........2004-07-21

When this was released I had such a crush on "Belinda Carlisle", ok so I still do. This album which was her most popular, is just as good as her "Greatest Hits" as far as I'm concerned. Included are the hits "I Get Weak", "Circle In The Sand", and of course "Heaven Is A Place On Earth", but I also like "World Without You" and "Love Never Dies". Plus there's her cover of "I Feel Free", which is obviously more pop than the original from "Cream". Overall this album is one of the best from the late 80's pop scene, and definitely the best of "Belinda".

4 out of 5 stars A Guilty Pleasure.......2007-03-29

As a progressive rock fan, any dipping into straight pop is, at best, a guilty pleasure for me. This album is simply wonderful and I often find myself cruising down some lonely stretch of Texas highway, singing along with Belinda. It helps quite a bit that Belinda Carlisle has an absolutely dreamy voice - that's right, pop singers used to be able to sing! Where this album really stands out, though, is that the songs are actually quite complex, by pop standards, and that the musicians are really allowed to shine - the violin solo on La Luna, short though it may be, is gorgeous. I would own this album for that violin solo alone ... but almost every other song on the album is just as beautifully embellished. The only song on the album I dislike is (We Want) The Same Thing - too poppish for my tastes - but I can't think of any other pop album that has so many strong tracks. If one must own a Belinda Carlisle album, this is the one!

One of the best CD's she's ever came out with. There really isn't any song thats better than the next because their all AWSOME!!! I'd say "Summer Rain" is the best in my opinion cuz i relate to it. "VISION OF YOU" i relate to also and love that song as well. This cd captures the essense of BELINDA CARLISLE!!! She is truly amazing. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this cd. Dancy, exciting, upbeat, and romantic!!!!!

Belinda Carlisle has a stunning and unique voice that I love. I've got all of her solo cd's and this is one of the best of them.
There is a great mix of songs on here, from boppy to beautiful ballads. If you are the ballad type, then the best songs are Vision Of You (one of her best songs ever) and Shades of Michaelangelo. The best upbeat songs are Runaway Horses, La Luna and of course Leave A Light On. Yes I do love Summer Rain, but it's so overplayed. There isn't a bad song on the whole disc. I really wish she'd do new music - especially if it's going to be anything like this.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Not worth buying!.......2007-05-29

I found this recording basically worthless. It contains only very short excerpts of the song. Not enough to get into and enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2007-01-18

This is the worst purchase I have ever made. It is a truly dreadful piece of work.I was so disgusted with it that I threw it into the trash can.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for "drop the needle" style tests.......2006-11-19

If you want to hear full recordings of arias, then this disc is not for you. It plays only tidbits of 99 arias. Contrary to the title, this is definitely not the only opera disc you'll ever need. You shouldn't take it seriously. This disc has next to no value for an opera neophyte. But for opera fanatics, there has never been a better test of your knowledge of operatic repertoire and singers. It's a great challenge for opera buffs. Sit down with your opera loving friends for an hour, play this disc, and try to be the first to identify the singer, composer, opera, and piece. If you're a music professor, this disc would make for an awesome pop quiz. Find out how well your students really know their opera repertoire.

1 out of 5 stars A CD with Attention Deficit Disorder.......2006-10-02

I don't know anyone who would enjoy this CD. It will drive opera fans nuts with a hundred exerpts that run about 30 seconds each, then fade out without the singers even finishing a single verse. It's more like an index of arias, or a volume of teasers that hucksters might use to sell opera CDs.

I never realized how much Bernstein's "Glitter and be gay" sounded like Delibes' "Bell Song" until I heard 35 seconds of one, followed 23 seconds of the other.

Maybe the TV show 'Jeopardy' could use this CD. 'What is "Hush little baby don't you..."??'

What a waste of beautiful voices and great music. 38 seconds of Enrico Caruso, followed by 31 seconds of Jussi Bjoerling, followed by 38 seconds of Dawn Upshaw.

My copy is going to go sailing into the wastebasket as soon as I finish this review.

1 out of 5 stars This sucks..........2006-03-31

I should only blame myself for not checking out more reviews... this is a CD filled with short, little snippets of great operas songs... and I mean SHORT, LITTLE snippets of 30 seconds or so, each. Don't buy this CD... it is a complete rip off... and that is saying ALOT since it is only $4.00... Again, my fault for not reading the reviews but I trusted that something called a "Music CD" would actually have complete songs... What else does this company offer? A "Music CD" that only has the intros or applause tracks to great songs...?

Move on to something else... Amazon has a great selection... just not this one.
