British bluesman John Mayall is primarily known as the guy whose band massive guitarists like Eric Clapton and Peter Green got their start in. Mayall's always been a better bandleader than musician; it's not that he's bad at the latter, but rather that he's so good at the former. So it is perhaps appropriate that Along for the Ride is essentially a showcase of other artists, many of them young up-and-comers, including Shannon Curfman and Jonny Lang.

As you have no doubt guessed, there is some serious guitar playing here, but what's most special about this CD is that these gifted ax men really get a chance to shine. Lang's lead guitar on "That's Why I Love You So," for instance, sure doesn't sound much like Mick Taylor's on "She Don't Play by the Rules," and neither of those resembles Gary Moore's work on "If I Don't Get Home" or Buddy Whittington's lead on "So Many Roads." Along for the Ride's cast also includes a few Mayall emeriti, such as Green, Mick Fleetwood, and John McVie, as well as Jeff Healey, Steve Miller, Otis Rush, and plenty of others. Lots of musicians do the all-star-album thing, but you know Mayall's going to integrate his guest stars smoothly, and that's exactly what he does. --Genevieve Williams

I ordered this CD for my three year old son after seeing how much he loved the I Love Toy Trains DVD's. I Love Toy Trains DVD Parts (1-3) He was so excited when I gave it to him, and he wanted to listen to it right away. He loves to listen to it when we are in the car. Track number one has a great train bell sound effect that he loves, and "Choo Choo Blues" is one that he loves to sing along to. I plan to look into more James Coffey music for my son.

I bought this CD to play as background music at my son's train themed birthday party. All of the kids loved the music and we had a wide age range. I highly recommend this CD for kids whether they have a love of trains or not. Very fun car riding tunes!

Turn up the volume!.......2000-11-14

I have two kids (a boy and a girl ages 3 1/2 and 2) who love this music. My son tells me to stop talking and turn up the volume when we listen. They love to get their instruments out and play along. James Coffey writes the music for a train video series produced by Tom McComas (....) that parents will want to check out. My kids prefer these videos over the Thomas series and I think the music is the reason.

Right On Track!.......2000-02-23

My kids got this as a gift from friends in the U.S. and it is a hit both at home and amongst my kids' friends who keep borrowing it (much to my kids' dismay since they listen to it almost non-stop). The English speakers love the lyrics and the non-English speakers love the music! It is a favorite in our house...we love it all!

Both of my children (boy 4 1/2, girl 1 1/2) love this music about trains - especially the dinosaur song. The CD has stood the test of time at our house. We first borrowed it from the library, and my son was constantly asking to get it again. After several renewals, I finally broke down and bought it. There is also a video called "I Love Toy Trains, Part 4" which is set to this entire collection. Both have been big hits at our house for over a year.

My brother Bob and I were lucky enough to be "Blues Breakers" for a day.
We were in the studio when Billy Gibbons laid down his wicked tone on "Put it Right Back", and if that weren't enough. We were asked to play on the song by brother Steve and I wrote, "If I don't get home", featuring Gary Moore on guitar. Not a bad day. It was truly an honor to perform, and have our music featured on such a great John Mayall Record..... ..Hey John, Let's do it again!

WOW !!!!!.......2007-02-09

I was in my local music store looking for some blues - very small selection of blues in my area. I was getting frustated when I happened onto this CD in the wrong bin. I decided to give it a try because of Mayall's track record, and with the awesome talent assembled here I thought that some of it would be OK (plus it was a dual layer SACD disc as well).I always knew Mayall was an excellent band leader, but he does an amazing job keeping this level of talent focused. The song writing and material selection for each artist is right on target. This is a must have CD for any progressive blues fan - maybe any rock fan !!! I would put this in the top 20 of my favorite prog blues albums of all time. Buy this CD !!!! - you will not be sorry.

Great Album and More.......2006-01-17

I happened upon this album while looking for Steve Miller selections. I've always enjoyed Miller's style of blues and haven't found anyone quite like him yet. So I picked this up because Miller was on it but was more than pleasantly surprised by the album in general.

Eric Bibb's "World War Blues" is a wonderful tune that plays like it was written yesterday, even though it is pre-9/11. It says a lot in a short set of lyrics.

"Testify" with Shannon Curfman is amazing for two things. One is the incredible voice of Curfman, a teenager with a voice as powerful as Bonnie Raitt. Secondly, the song rocks.

"Yo-Yo Man" is my third favorite on the album, primarily because of Steve Miller's guitar playing.

Overall, I'm very happy with this album. I must confess, I had never heard Mayall before and I'm sure this album is less like his previous ones from the other reviews I've read but by bringing in his friends he has gained at least one more fan.

NOW I'M MAYALL'S FRIEND.......2003-06-23

Great disc from John Mayall. He has assembled past Bluesbreaks members like Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Mick Taylor, and Peter Green, along with newcomers like Johnny Lang and Shannon Curfman to produce a great rock-blues disc. Sidemen like Steve Cropper, Steve Miller and other blues staples make this the type of disc where the fun these people are having comes out really clear. Great songs, great playing, great guitar solos, and that Hammond organ. If you like the blues, you can't beat this. Every song is great. 60 minutes of great music

Not your 60's Mayall.......2002-09-10

I own several Mayall CD's, all from the 60's. His band was the first 'white' blues band that mattered. I love every single of those classic blues albums, very good songwriter as well. But this album has nothing to do with those great classic albums. This is a rock-blues CD, probably a good introduction to some rock fans who want to get a little grasp of the blues, but is not the real article. Otis Rush and Peter Green colaborations are barely notable in the album, although Mayall himself is still in full form. I rated it 3 stars because I think he missed the chance to make another great blues album, like those he made in the 60's.

With all the recent consciousness-raising campaigns about the importance of music education, it's about time somebody spread the gospel at the preschool level. Enter the Sesame Street gang with Elmo and the Orchestra, Sony Wonder's companion title to its movement-of-the-moment targeted video Elmo's Musical Adventure: The Story of Peter and the Wolf. Here, Elmo fans giggle along as the furry red guy and Big Bird gab their way through a wide-ranging selection of classic compositions. The venue is Bird's nest, where the Birdapest Orchestra, confidently led by conductor Leonard Birdseed, tackles snippets of Mozart's Symphony No. 40, Paganini's 24 Caprices, Chopin's Minute Waltz, Haydn's Surprise Symphony, Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker, and 14 famous others. During the pair's daffy, Sesame-style running dialogue, Elmo gets a grip on the four sections of an orchestra; delights in discovering that music, even the kind without words, sometimes tells a story (especially when the story is about animals, as in Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight of the Bumblebee); and, with great enthusiasm, sits in for Mr. Birdseed as conductor for a few performances. Silliness aside, the 2- to 5-year-old set stands to learn a confidence-building tidbit or two about the often stuffy-seeming classical genre from this CD. Caregivers bent on working the music into their kids' cultural repertoire can count on a less guarded approach to complicated (if masterful) compositions when they scoop up this record. And then there's the fun factor--as with most Sesame releases, it's through the roof, so the storyline's treetop setting couldn't be more suitable. --Tammy La Gorce

We found this at the library and my 4 year old really liked this. It's the only way we can both listen to nice classical music. If it's not in this format she is not content unless I get creative about listening to classical music. This music helped me do that. For example we imagine what we listen to like birds or clouds.

A must for your collection!.......2002-07-17

I also wish the pieces could have been longer, but I do like the way they talk about classes of instruments (like brass and percussion), and play excerpts of pieces that feature those intstruments. They also make sure to mention the composer before his piece is played. Elmo and Big Bird also find out how different classical pieces can make us think of different scenes, describe something like a bumblebee, make us feel a certain way (like Brahms' Lullaby), or get our feet moving. The music is fun and exciting, and is a wonderful way to introduce classical music if it hasn't been a part of your collection. Hey, it's great even if you DO play a lot of classical music in your house! We find it really exciting BECAUSE our daughters have heard this music before. (And mommy and daddy like it, too!) Enjoy!!

A great way to introduce kids to classical music!.......2001-05-22

If your kids love Sesame Street, but you want to introduce them to classical music, then this is the album for you. Big Bird introduces Elmo to the "Birdapest Symphony" and "Leonard Birdseed", conductor. They teach us about the different instruments part by part, and help Elmo to find the symphony he's heard once before but can't quite remember. Well, after giving us parts of some wonderful classical bits of music, Elmo finds his piece of music. And it's wonderful. The album is great fun, and my only regret is that they never play an entire piece, or even half a piece, it's only a taste, a glimpse. So it's a great introduction, but not truly satisfying. It's very educational and very enjoyable for all to listen to, especially in the car. But it's too short--I wish they would not talk over the music, and that they had included longer bits.

Don't overlook this..........2006-03-15

great collection of songs, done by his long-time backup band with guest artists. The songs are good to great, the guests provide a bit of extra life, and the sound quality is top-notch,
worth the price of admission. While I haven't heard the "birth
day party" disc, this one stands on its own, near the top of my list for his long, fantastic career.

I bought this one about 9 years ago mostly because the "Home Alone" songs and it is still one of my favorites. The arrangements are true John Williams style, captivating as always. My nephew who lives with me, grew up with this album and is now 14 still LOVES IT. He swears it's not Christmas without it. I guess I think the same way. I let a relative borrow it and was sorry when I did because I immediately missed it playing at my house. (I made her burn a copy right away.) I love the idea of original songs included with the traditional Christmas tunes to become instant classics. I wouldn't decorate my home without this CD playing in the background.

A Forgotten Christmas Collection.......2003-12-04

This Christmas collection by John Williams and the Boston Pops for Sony is a forgotten gem. It includes many Pops favorites such as Leroy Anderson's "A Christmas Festival" with choral arrangement, "Sleigh Ride" and "White Christmas" (again with vocals." It also has an arrangement of Alfred Burt's Christmas music as well as a medley of contemporary Christmas music. The true jewel in this recording is Williams' "Somewhere In My Memory" from HOME ALONE. Though this album is not as strong as the Christmas recording Williams' and the Pops did for Philips, it is still an enjoyable album.

A cD for the whole family!.......2003-05-03

"This is the ideal album for the family!!!! I did not think this could exist- an album that my kids love and that I love! Rebecca's lyrics are catchy and simple enough for my kids to understand, (and for me to sing throughout the day) and while the images are positive and encourage the same kind of thought I, as a mother, encourage, she never gets preachy. The morals are there, but the music, the fun of listening and dancing and singing along with great music, that comes first. Each song has it's own musical style, as well as it's own story. The music is mature and complex enough to keep my ears tuned, yet not too complicated for the ears of my 2 and 3 year old. My 22 month old, Michael, sings 'rolling, rolling, rolling, big truck!' He asks for Rebecca by name, and without fail, every day! And Steven, my 3 year old, gets the CD out by himself and puts it in the CD player. 'I want to hear about the monster in the little boy's room. I know, it is just in his imagination......no mommy, start from the beginning of the CD, I want to hear all of it! OK, let's dance, mommy.' I am looking forward to Rebecca's next album, in the meantime, I recommend this album highly. Thankyou, Rebecca, for Big Truck Music- continue!!!!!!!"

Great CD for kids and their parents.......2003-04-09

Music in my Heart is my 2 year old daughter's favorite CD. It's the first CD she actually sang along to! The whole CD, but particularly Bubblebath Blues, is our bathtime soundtrack. On any given night you are likely to hear in our house "o.k., we'll listen to Bubblebath Blues one more time, then it's time to get out of the bath." This CD is so much fun for kids and adults alike.

Big Truck Delivers!.......2002-09-24

Rebecca Frezza's melodious voice, child and adult friendly lyrics, and sophisticated instrumentals make this CD a hit for kids and grown-ups alike. I can't stop playing this CD - you and your kids will be humming the "Bubble Bath Blues" long after the CD has stopped playing. "Music in My Heart" makes a great gift for kids of all ages!
