Editorial Reviews

Mickey Raphael, harmonica player for Willie Nelson
Eddie is replacing me in the world of harmonica.

Product Description
Eddie Spaghetti, lead singer and bass player for legendary rock-n-roll band The Supersuckers has up and done it: the accursed solo record (¯ugh·solo records are so lame!˜), titled ¯The Sauce˜. That’s right, the irreverent, witty, wise-cracking bastard child of Roger Miller is here to take the piss out of this whole ¯look-at-me-I'm-an-important-artiste˜ scene with a record full of his favorite songs. Loose, fun and easy to swallow, ¯The Sauce˜ spans seven decades of songwriting and showcases Spaghetti’s impeccable song choices and uncanny ability to sing the drinking songs for drinkers who like to drink the drinks.

With Beck's unexpected commercial breakthrough, everyone's suddenly interested in a new kind of music best described as "slacker-rap." Although it uses the sing-song cadences of hip-hop, it's the polar opposite of gangsta rap; in both its laid-back delivery and self-deprecating lyrics, slacker-rap acknowledges vulnerability and failure. It was done first and best by Washington's Basehead, but it gets an invigorating twist on "G. Love and Special Sauce," the eponymous debut album from this Philadelphia trio.

    G. Love not only looks like Michael Stipe, but he has the same mealy-mouthed vocal delivery. If Stipe ever decided to record his first rap album with an unplugged blues trio, it'd probably sound a lot like "G. Love and Special Sauce." Recorded live with no drum machines, samples or overdubs, the album creates a fresh, distinctive sound with its odd blend of lazy rapping and funky acoustic blues. Unfortunately, G. Love's absurdist observations on life aren't as funny as those by John S. Hall of King Missle, and the laid-back minimalism of the music wears thin after a while. Only "Baby's Got Sauce," which boasts a pop hook and a valentine to a domineering woman, holds up on repeated listens. --Geoffrey Himes

I was re-visiting some older CDs & put this back on my playlist. Heard this CD at a party in '95 and bought it the next day. The chorus & street rhythms still sound new, and the great production helps bring out the downright cheekiness which makes you want to dance.

    Stand outs:
    This Ain't Livin'
    Cold Beverage (GREAT chorus)

This is still one of my favorite albums. I thought that G. Love was an aquired taste sort of band, but my girl seemed to like them when we saw G. open up for a very dissapointing Dave Matthews Band. Oh yeah it's that easy.

    G. Love and Special Sauce is a fresh breath of summer air. I think this album is perfect for summer! It has the roots of classic jazz and original hip-hop style mixed together to perfection. I love it!

5 out of 5 stars Modern day blues..........2005-11-18

What I like most about G. Love is that he was one of the few artists in the mid 1990's who had the guts to put out an album that was so faithful to the blues yet created something new by fusing it with a hip hop attitude and delivery. I have always felt that some of the elements of rap were present in popular music as far back as the lyrics of Chuck Berry, but G. Love took the setting of bluesmen like Son House and combined it with rap, ultimately creating a new genre. I read an article where he stated he only played the oldest Dobros he could find to give the music an authentic feel, and it definitely worked. He also displayed a knowledge of blues history and manages to name many of the key players in blues history from 1920-1970 in a verse of "Blues Music". I can listen to this disc all the way through without skipping anything; the grooves they laid down are infectious. This CD always makes me feel like I'm on the back porch in the summertime. If you like that feeling, this one is for you.

It's not terribly surprising that G. Love and Special Sauce were tapped to fill in for Sugar Ray when the band dropped out of Woodstock '99. It's not simply because of the smooth, muscle-shirted frontmen, but also because the same kind of easy soul, funk, and rap influences wash over their stronger cuts. The calypsolike "Rodeo Clowns" on Philadelphonic feeds on that radio-friendly vibe, all sunshine and broken hearts. Unfortunately, that cut is one of the few high points this time out. While it's nice to see G. Love step away from emulating Will Smith, which sank Yeah, It's That Easy, the answer to stronger material is not to try and channel Jamiroquai through Love's nasal Philly-soaked stoner raps ("Dreamin'"). But even more than that, this boy needs to get away from spacey soul jams, and fast--"Relax" sounds like G. fell asleep with a mouthful of syrup and woke up in love. --Jason Josephes

This album has a cretain raw sound in the way it was recorded, almost like it was done live. This is very fun music perfect for carefree summer days, cool beats, funky bass lines, and laid back lyrics and delivery. This is the only g love album i own, it still satisfies me when i hear so i have no need to buy another one.I like the Rodeo clowns on this cd better than the original. It flows better with the beat. These guys are the masters of "cool" music.

This group is SO Under Rated!
Honor, harmony and humor...I love dese guys! The unique, gutzy harmonizing in this CD reminds me of listening as a kid in bed to the street corner Acapella groups in South Philly...WAAAY before G.'s time. Combined with funk...ahhh. I've been looking for a funky, hip, contemporary group for ages...G.Love, where have you been all my life?

4 out of 5 stars A great CD for the summertime.......2006-05-31

    G. Love is the master of rhymes for the summertime. Philadelphonic is filled with a number of bouncy pool party anthems as well as cool laid back lazy summer day music. The appearance of Jack Johnson is quite nice, and "Rodeo Clowns" is definately the strongest cut of the album. Other strong tracks include "Dreamin'," "Do It For Free," and "Friday Night." Granted, this isn't exactly deep stuff, but its really fun for breaking loose in the summertime.

It's fun to see how G. Love & Special Sauce have evolved since the release of their self titled debut in 1994. Philadelphonic is more electric, more richly instrumentated, higher fidelity, a fuller sound and the pace seems to be a little more bouncy, bright and fast-paced. The boys seem to lean less toward the slow laid back funky tracks that were released earlier and are doing more zesty uptempo stuff. While the first album had Philadelphia written all over it, the guest appearance by Jack Johnson, the surfy twangy guitars and the DJ scratching all give the album a much more southern california type feel. It's also really nice to hear a little more of G. Love's harmonica chops. It's a fun change of pace. Unlike most of the music that I listen to, G. Love is not music that I appreciate for the depth and mature musicianship, but its just plain fun.

    5 out of 5 stars Definitely worthwhile!.......2006-03-14

If you only buy one cd, get Jack Johnson's Brushfire Fairytales. It's the bomb. If you buy two cd's, you should definitely check this one out. It is one of the best. I especially like tracks like rodeo clowns and numbers, but there isn't a dull track on this cd. Don't waste your money on 50 cent or Eminem. This guy kicks azz!!

5 out of 5 stars one of the best albums.......2005-11-16

I've been a G. Love fan since the beginning... and I have to say of all his albums, this is definitely the best.
GLASS come well into their own on this album, as G's voice is at its peak and their unique blend of all kinds of styles gels perfectly here. They mix folk, hip hop, rock, and blues together seamlessly, while presenting grooves that just keep you addicted. There isn't a track on this album that I don't find enjoyable. And for all of you Jack Johnson fans out there- he makes an appearance on the album with the debut of his song 'Rodeo Clowns.' Jack did his own version of the song on his sophomore album, as well. Interestingly, this seems to be most people's favorite song on Philadephonic. Personally, I think the beat/rhythm is spectacular but 'Numbers' and 'No Turning Back' are even better. 'Friday Night' is also a great song- the hip hop feel makes the song unique.

DEFINITELY give this album a chance if you listen to any kind of alternative rock, indie, or enjoy a unique sound... you will NOT be disappointed.
And if GLASS make it into your town, go check them out- they put on one of the best live shows that I've ever seen.

Love & Special Sauce released their debut album in 1994, the same year Beck made his major-label debut with a similar blend of folk-blues roots and slacker-rap. Though he has never quite matched Beck's aesthetic or commercial success, Love continues to tinker with the formula in interesting ways and has come up with his best album yet in 1997's Yeah, It's That Easy. Like Beck, Love is at his best when he allows pop pleasures to shine through the montage of archival roots and hip-hop experiments. This album, for example, kicks off with "Stepping Stone," which, for all its blues motifs and street-wise beats, is at its best when it reaches its irresistible, sing-along chorus.

Yeah, It's That Easy is an unusual hip-hop album in that it includes a powerful pro-police, anti-gangster number, but it also takes time to make fun of Larry Bird. The latter insult comes on "I-76," a funny, funky number about Love's boyhood hoops team, the Philadelphia 76ers. Less persuasive are the mumbling, monotonous rap numbers such as the title track, but when Love pulls together hip-hop beats, blues guitar licks, and pop hooks, as he does on "Lay Down the Law," an elegy for a street-life victim, he finally lives up to all the great claims made for him at his debut. --Geoffrey Himes

    5 out of 5 stars classic g.love.......2005-11-16

This is a classic GLASS album... I've been a fan since the beginning and I truly think it was their first AMAZING album. Their self-titled debut album is great, while their sophomore album (Coast to Coast Motel) was very much lacking.
This album, their third, is a serious break-out hit. I definitely think that this album and their next (Philadelphonic) are their two best... with their debut as a close third.
You can't help but groove and sing along to the first song- "Stepping Stones" or want to jam out to the hiphop-infused second song "I-76." "Slipped Away" is a great sad song, while "When We Meet Again" is one of those songs that just automatically brings up old memories of long-lost friends and your teenage/college years. When the album came out, I had just started high school and listening back to that song brings up so many memories.
Anyway- this album is already a classic, so I definitely recommend a listen- it won't hurt! And odds are that you'll enjoy it.

Listen, we all know that reviews are nothing more than personal opinions, so let me cut right to the chase. I love this album. If I were stranded on the proverbial desert island, this is without a doubt one I'd want with me. It's a great album from beginning to end. It's great for: the car, parties, housework, just relaxing, you get the point. I'm a huge fan of G. and I dig all of his albums, but if I had to pick just one this would be it. Oh yeah... drummers don't get much funkier than the Houseman...

    5 out of 5 stars They've got the recipe.......2003-05-25

Philly born and bred, G. Love (Garret Dutton) and Special Sauce pour out all their emotion and talent into an enticing amalgam of hip-hop, blues, folk, and funk. The band's talent shines forth the brightest on this cd, their third effort. Here's a brief overview of the tracks:

    1. Stepping Stones - 5 stars - The hook "you keep using me just like a stepping stone" will be stuck in your head for weeks.

    2. I-76 - 4 1/2 stars - This one is a funky tune about hoops, particularly G's team, the 76ers.

    3. Lay Down the Law - 5 stars - The surprisingly simple and beautiful prelude to the bulk of this track is exquisite.

    4. Slipped Away - 2 1/2 stars - A dark tune about someone deceased in G's family, possibly his mother. Too dreary for me, doesn't fit well with the rest of the tracks on here.

    5. You Shall See - 3 stars - Nothing really special on this one, just an average track.

    6. Take You There - 5 stars - Awesome, laid-back summer tune with a sweet cowbell.

    7. Willow Tree - 5 stars - Another great song for lounging in the sun, good stuff.

    8. Yeah, It's That Easy - 4 stars - Nice piano backed up by G's sweet rhymes.

    9. Recipe - 5 stars - Very funky and soulful, great track

    10. 200 Years - 3 stars - A little bit dull, not bad though.

    11. Making Amends - 3 1/2 stars - Fun and upbeat number.

    12. Pull the Wool - 10 stars - Absolutely amazing. This song is one of the most beautiful tracks I've ever heard. 9 minutes and 26 seconds of sheer bliss.

    13. When We Meet Again - 4 stars - G's standard acoustic, folky last number.

Modern-day bluesman G. Love, known to more skeptical ears as 23-year-old blue-eyed devil Garrett Dutton, shone briefly as hip-hop's great white hope when he released a debut record that paired blues-based playing with vocals that approximated rap. Though he was initially grouped with acts like Beck and Soul Coughing--pale faces who flirted with hip-hop but stuck to rock esthetics--we know now that young Master Dutton has far less in common with those inventive postmodernists than he does with, say, Jamie Walters, the pretty-boy pop dullard of Beverly Hills 90210 fame.

Coast to Coast Motel, the singer/guitarist's second shot with his bass and drums ensemble Special Sauce, does not even grant us the minor pleasures of his debut's "blues rap" novelty. This time, Mr. G focuses primarily on the R&B sounds of New Orleans, where the band recorded the album. That G. Love counts John Hammond Jr. an inspiration is telling: What Coast to Coast Motel offers is bratty suburban recreations of Hammond's competent but uninspired blueblood appropriations of classic blues music. New Special Sauce tunes like "Kiss & Tell" and "Bye Bye Baby" are absolutely fine but inauthentic and unnecessary given the breadth of great blues already available to motivated listeners. And any college-educated kid, like Garrett, who insists on singing with the slurred drawl of elderly sharecroppers needs to be slapped silly. --Roni Sarig

    4 out of 5 stars Madness!.......2006-08-02

Who the hell is Roni Sarig and what is his problem? G-love and Special Sauce are one of the few musical acts out there who don't pump out the same MTV garbage on a regualr basis.

    4 out of 5 stars A strong showing.......2006-02-24

Man, what's gotten into Roni Sarig's (the caustic reviewer) drawers? He puts down G. Love and John Hammond, Jr. in the same review?

Doesn't the sharecropper remark seem a bit...I dunno...'holier-than-thou' at best and racist at worst?

Don't know what happened to Roni, but G.Love is still recording great music. Ditto John Hammond.

4 out of 5 stars More Folk Oriented, But Still Very Good.......2003-07-30

The droll humor and wistful breeziness flaunted on G's first release is transformed into a more subdued, folk-oriented follow up album. After first listen, I didn't think much of this release, but it grew on me in time. The singles Sweet Sugar Mama and Kiss and Tell are equally enticing, but other tracks like the optimistic Leaving the City, the dreary Sometimes, and the brilliant, big band foray of Bye Bye Baby are the best songs, making up the foundation of the record. Although it's quite disparate from the band's other releases, Coast to Coast Motel is nearly paramount in quality to G's other releases, and it will definately start to rub off on you after a few listens.

4 out of 5 stars From Joe Pops with Love, G. Love.......2003-01-03

Wow, this is a great album, I can't believe it got a negative review. "Small Fish" is da bomb.

5 out of 5 stars Just excellent music.......2002-07-24

I can't believe this album got a negative review. Neither can I believe G. Love is getting negative press in other reviews...

This is what this album has to offer: it's got its own unique, creative sound - as every G. Love album - and it will grow on you like pleasure. I've had this album for several years, and I still get so down into it every time I hear it.

If you like artists from all walks of music because they create their own vein of music without fitting in an easy box ( e.g. B. Harper, Morcheeba, Sublime, M. Ndegeacelo, J. Buckley, GURU, Albert King, the Beatles and M. Davis), this will undoubtedly satisfy you. It took a few listening to grow on me, as I had other G. Love albums which sound a bit rawer.

Discovering G. Love is one of those rare times when you think: damn, I found an incredible artist with a new sound. A sound that's not just new, but simply feels so good you can't quite believe it. Perhaps playing everyday since childhood and growing up in a musical environment helped, but this is someone with immense raw talent.

The sound bites help, but are not sufficent to get a real feel for this sound. Hey G. Love, may you keep putting out this quality and variety for many years!

    4 out of 5 stars A valiant effort..........2005-10-11

Falling somewhere between Jack Johnson and the Beastie Boys, Pennsylvania's "G. Love and the Special Sauce" have been churning out their own brand of acoustic, funky hobo-hop blues for over a decade and developed quite a cult following along the way. Despite their longevity, however,, the group has been more-or-less overlooked by mainstream radio. Instead, they've garnered success through the strengh of their live show and grueling touring schedule.

The key to G. Love's music lies in not trying to analyze it too deeply. The raps are simple and the funky guitar-harmonica-drums instrumentation is about as bare-bones as it can get. Even moreso, as evidenced by songs such as "This Aint Living," the band doesn't seem to care if they're singing a little out-of-tune. In fact, laid back, relaxed grooving is the main theme of their work. Although songs such as "Rodeo Clowns" and "Cold Beverage" have enough pop-flare to attract some new listeners, this album isn't likely to convert any G.Love naysayers. Subsequently, on the flip side, it's likely too sparse of an offering to satisfy any longtime fans.

    1 out of 5 stars Tone Deaf.......2005-02-22

Much hype has surrounded G Love & Special Sauce. Don't believe the hype. The instruments are muddled. The tone-deaf singing and stupid lyrics are uninspired. G Love should leave blues music to real artists. If you want to hear talented musicians, spend your money on Jason Mraz or Jack Johson, or Red Hot Chili Peppers Californication

    1 out of 5 stars Ridiculous Title.......2005-02-21

How can anything this guy does be titled "Best of"? Me thinks it would have been better to title it "WORST of". This guy just plain sucks! Can I say that? I sure hope so cause I'd hate to see anyone waste their money on this crap. You'll get more musical enjoyment from the sounds of three hungry cats.

3 out of 5 stars I like him better with Jack Johnson.......2005-01-08

I think this group needs to work on their writing. Although I will occassionally listen to this CD, their best work on it is remakes and duets with other artists. I like G. Loves work on "Thicker that water" better that on the Best of CD.

3 out of 5 stars Scanty Representation of an Awesome Group.......2003-07-29

I have no major objection to any of the songs present on this best of compilation, except for unified and free at last, which come from G's worst album, The Electric Mile. The problem with this cd doesn't lie in the songs present, but the lack thereof. G. Love and Special Sauce have released six cds, and in my opinion, a greatest hits disc with a meager 11 songs does a poor job of summing up the oeuvre of a wonderful group. Most noticeably the disc is lacking the following songs: 1. Pull the Wool, an ornate, florid masterpiece from G's best record, "Yeah, It's That Easy." 2. Bye Bye Baby, a shifting assemblage of a million instruments into one uproarious goodtime. It's the best song from "Coast to Coast Motel." 3. Dreamin', a wonderful gem from "Philadelphonic." 4. Writing on the Walls, from the accompaniment cd of "Electric Mile" entitled "Riding High." This song is really one of the catchiest songs the band has ever made, thoroughly enjoyable. 5. Break Away, another amazing song from "Riding High." For people reading this and finding about G for the first time, I recommend the self-titled debut or "Yeah, It's That Easy." Both discs are far more rewarding in quality and quantity.

I'm no jazz fan per se... I just liked that original "Soul Sauce". They called it "Guachi Guaro" ...to me it sounded like "What chu wadda". When my girl friend expressed an interest in having this, it was not a difficult decision to go for this digital version. I highly recommend that you under 60 people, who have no clue about Cal Tjader and latin jazz, listen to a clip of "Soul Sauce" and what ever other title on this album strikes your fancy.

    4 out of 5 stars smooth wood.......2006-05-03

Cal Tjader went to the next level in his craft with this album, which probably influenced many great bands (look for the Herbaliser in "take London"). Wonderfully executed, with a smooth clean latin vibe, Cal isn't afraid to step off the tracks and go beyond clich?s of Latin music. very good

5 out of 5 stars Soul Sauce - Cal Tjader Review.......2006-03-15

...this is a really good start. How a white guy from Chicago became the king of Latin jazz in his day is a whole other story, but talent had something to do with it ;) My favorite on this CD is Tanya, the title track and Ming have been mentioned in other reviews; several of the tracks are a little slower and cooler (Leyte, Somewhere in the Night, Spring Is Here, for example). All in all a good roundup of Tjader's styles.

If you are a Cal Tjader and Poncho Sanchez fanatico as I am, then you must add this cd to your collection. Poncho picked some of Cal's classic songs & takes them to a higher level.... Song for Cal is a special tribute to his early mentor. It's my favorite Poncho CD. Ruben Estrada is outstanding on the vibes. I'm sure Cal is looking down from heaven & waving a white flag, saying Bravo Poncho Bravo......

Seemingly growing more content with his outsider status with each new release, former Sony great white hype Garrett "G. Love" Dutton appears in no hurry to update his band's back-porch hip-hop-and-blues sound. On his fifth studio album with Special Sauce--bassist Jim Prescott and drummer Jeff Clemens--themes of positivity and spiritual satisfaction remain at the fore, while the laidback grooves sound more effortless than ever, particularly on the '70s-drenched title track and the tender "Sara's Song." There is a breezy nod to Bob Marley on the ska-inflected "Praise Up," and "Night of the Living Dead" features a fractured falsetto vocal, but major diversions are rare on Electric Mile, an album that is virtually interchangeable with the trio's self-titled 1994 debut. And that's no bad thing. --Jaan Uhelszki

4 out of 5 stars The most over produced G-Love album ever..........2006-07-19

One of the many joys I find of listening to G. Love's music is it's raw sounding recording. Although some find this irritating, I think it only adds to the general ambience of his music. As a long time fan of G.Love and The Special Sauce I bought this album last of all, having overlooked it somehow. Compared to other offerings, Yeah, It's That Easy et al this is probably my least favourite album by them. Having said that it is only weak compared to other g.love offerings and as I said I'm a big fan. If you can get over the ridiculously crisp recording, then this is another quality showcase of G.Love's blues/hip hop style...

    5 out of 5 stars What's Up People???.......2005-07-20

People gave this album such lousy reviews...it does not deserve anything less than 3 stars, I gave it 5 stars to get its rating back up where it should be. This is great groovy chill music with G. Love's awesome style shining in each track. People are lame if they gave this anything under 3 stars, true G. Love fans would appreciate this album as I do. I think this CD foreshadows his latest release on Brushfire Records 'The Hustle.' Get this great CD!!!

1 out of 5 stars Whoa, whoa, whoa --- what happened???.......2005-01-13

One minute you're sitting there thinking that G. Love can do no wrong with his patented approach to funky blues/rap... and then he releases The Electric Mile. Earth to G., what happened???

Although I can't explain it, I've decided that there are exactly two kinds of G. Love albums: the knockouts like "Philadelphonic," "The Hustle," and the debut album that bowl you over with their jazzy, laid-back rhythms from start to finish, and the one or two where they've turned all the dials to "suck." The good news is that most of their CD's fall into the former category; the bad news is that if you start with a disc as lame as "The Electric Mile" you may never want to give these guys another chance, and that'd be a shame.

All I remember about this disc is selling it off in horror after 3 or 4 listens, as it was just lifeless, uninspired and boring, which is not what this band is about. If you're interested in checking out G. Love, do yourself a favour and start elsewhere.

    4 out of 5 stars Electric Mile - 3 Stars/ Ridin' High - 5 Stars.......2003-07-29

These guys have evolved throughout their careers with different focuses on each of their cds, rendering most of their albums very enjoyable. The Electric Mile, however, just seems unfocused. I can't fault G for trying to move in new directions because it served him well in the past, but the dabbling into ska/reggae territory with Unified and Praise Up comes off as paltry and cliched in comparison to G's other creative, authentic songs. Night of the Living Dead sounds more like the good old sway of the band that I've grown to familiarize and love, but the cd digresses again with Parasite. The music on this track, especially the bass, is pretty tight, but the superfluous execrations ("You're just a f***ing parasite" ad nauseam) water down the message which is good until the chorus. The rest of the songs on the cd are ok, none of them standing out in my mind as noteworthy other than 100 Magic Rings which is a soaring beauty and the bizarre, phsychadelic reprise of Free At Last.

The Electric Mile is packed with an accompanying disc entitled "Ridin' High." It has 10 songs in all, 4 reprises and 6 originals. Tracks 3-6 on this cd are really great. 3 is called Break Away. It's just very mellow and very easy to get into. I like it a lot. 4 is called Sea Shells- it shows off G's rhyming skills exquisitely. 5 and 6 are called House Stirs the Soup and Writing on the Walls, respectively. Both songs sound strikingly similar, using nearly the same guitar lines, possibly just in different keys. That doesn't matter much though because both of these songs are really happy and upbeat, and the unique chords are really bedazzling.

All in all, the purchase of "The Electric Mile" and "Ridin' High" is well worth the money of any G. Love & Special Sauce fans, but for people thinking about buying this as an introduction to the group, try "Yeah, It's That Easy," or the bands first album, "G. Love & Special Sauce" instead.

because this cd is so lame it brings tears to my eyes. i have every g. love cd and love them all but the guy has lost his way on this one. none of the musicianship that was so loud and clear in previous releases can be heard here. and the lyrics... the music is forced and hollow. take my word and pass on this one and hope that g. and sauce get it back together next time.

    Album Description

Eddie Spaghetti, lead singer and bass player for legendary rock-n-roll band The Supersuckers has up and done it: the accursed solo record (¯ugh·solo records are so lame!~), titled ¯The Sauce~. That's right, the irreverent, witty, wise-cracking bastard child of Roger Miller is here to take the piss out of this whole ¯look-at-me-I'm-an-important-artiste~ scene with a record full of his favorite songs. Loose, fun and easy to swallow, ¯The Sauce~ spans seven decades of songwriting and showcases Spaghetti's impeccable song choices and uncanny ability to sing the drinking songs for drinkers who like to drink the drinks.

If you look at the covers for Eddie Spaghetti's two albums side by side it's really disturbing.

3 out of 5 stars Maybe other people will like this.......2005-05-30

I am writing this review as a casual fan of the Supersuckers, and more serious fan of old country music.

That said, I find this album to be pretty mediocre. Eddie's originals are pretty good, and I really like his cover of Kris Kristofferson's "The Best of All Possible Worlds." However, a lot of the covers seem like songs that would be great to hear him play live, but they don't do much for this album.

For example, many bands have covered "Cocaine Blues," so Eddie's cover, while good, seems unnecessary. The cover of "I Don't Want to Lose You Yet" really pales in comparison to Steve Earle's original version, but maybe people who haven't heard the original won't mind. If he had taken more liberties with some of these covers, it would have been a lot more interesting, but if you are already familiar with these songs, it will seem kind of boring.

If you are a big fan of the Supersuckers, and not really into country music, you might enjoy this album quite a bit. But if you're like me, you might feel kind of let down by the effort put toward this excellent tracklist.

4 out of 5 stars One for the Good Ol' Boys...........2004-05-10

Eddie Spaghetti (real name: Arthur Spaghetti) usually plays in The Supersuckers. He decided to make a cd of his favorite country songs. He tells us in the liner notes that he did it in 3 days and I believe it cuz it shows. Let's not kid ourselves that this is a work of genius. What it is, is a mediocre country music album. The sort of stuff I'd hear at the local pub on a Sunday afternoon after a day at the beach. Mainly covers with a couple of Eddie's songs thrown in. Nearly all are terrible except for "Killer Weed," which excells itself in the tedium stakes.... and of course there's the final slap in the face that I can do without: having the 2-year-old brat kid warble "Blue Shadows on the Trail."

    4 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2004-04-15

Brilliant. As a yankee who has loved country music for the last few years, it is hard for me to find singers or groups that are doing the music in the raw honest fashion I enjoy. Not only does Eddie perform these songs honestly and beautifully, but by performing mostly covers he shows a listener like myself other musicians I should check out. A great, beautiful, and honest album.
