Editorial Reviews
A perfect recording for those who like their Celtic rock loud and proud.
Product Description
The Factory is the most diverse cd ever released by this Florida-based Celtic rock quintet. The tunes ont his disc run the gamut of rock, pop, country, celtic, and hip-hop. Composed primarily of original tunes, lead singer Kirk McLeod's expert songwriting and soft vocals deliver an unforgettable punch. The title track, "The Factory Song," is an anthem for the working world with it's raucous guitar and swooping pipes. Don't miss the equally dramatic ballads "Twelve" and "Sweet Orphan" as well as the pub stomping "The Paddy Set." Nothing about this disc is ordinary, but it will quickly become the frequently played and familiar recording in your library. Order two copies...just in case.

Back in the '80s and '90s, Richard Thompson could be depended upon to release a well-crafted collection of Celtic-influenced folk-rock every few years. But when he left Capitol after 1999's Mock Tudor, Thompson headed off on side projects, all of typically high quality, but not the solo albums his established cult expected. Those fans can now rejoice, because on Sweet Warrior Thompson roars back with his first electric set of originals since 2003, and it's a winner. As the disc's title implies, he revisits the familiar territory of love as a battlefield in these 14 originals. The concept is emphasized by a liner photo of the singer/songwriter in army gear and camouflage flanked by two beautiful women planting kisses on either cheek. Supported by longtime backing cohorts, the guitarist adds to his six-string talents with occasional mandolin, autoharp, accordion, and even organ, all used as icing on a cake of tunes that further refine his established style. Perhaps the most startling song is the viciously anti-war "Dad's Going to Kill Me," about a soldier stationed in Baghdad (the "Dad" of the title), wondering if he will survive another day. "Guns are the Tongues" finds Thompson telling the tragic tale of a young man enticed by a woman's charms ending up as a suicide-bombing terrorist. Thompson's dramatic guitar solos are kept on low boil, occasionally bubbling up but never hogging the spotlight. They are, along with his distinctive vocals, actors in a play of characteristically classy tunes that will thrill Thompson's fans, who have been waiting for just such a set of literate and challenging music from a musician who never delivers less. --Hal HorowitzAlbum Description
Literate rocker Richard Thompson's new album, Sweet Warrior, is a return to his classic electric sound, his first plugged-in album since 2003's The Old Kit Bag. Filled with 14 songs of stories of loss and betrayal, the album also contains one of Thompson's most overtly political songs to date, "Dad's Gonna Kill Me," told from the perspective of a nervous young soldier stationed in Baghdad (abbreviated as "Dad" in the song). Richard Thompson is a consummate singer, songwriter, and guitarist. His career stretches back to the late '60s, when he was a founding member of the British folk-rock Fairport Convention. In the late '70s, with his then-wife, Linda, he recorded Shoot Out the Lights, which regularly makes critics' lists of the best records of all time. In the '90s, he experienced another career renaissance with the album Rumor & Sigh and he remains an elder-statesman of alternative rock.Customer Reviews:

I generally don't like a heavy dose of political opinion mixed in with my music, but RT pulls it off here without being annoying, and considering the state of worldwide affairs it's actually pretty timely anyway. His anger in I'll Never Give it Up makes me wonder if he's dissing Bush or Blair, but one's own interpretation of the lyrics is what can make a song so delicious. His guitar playing continues to send shivers down my spine, especially on the track Take Care the Road You Choose. And who cannot feel sharp pangs of sorrow for the poor soldier in Dad's Gonna Kill Me ? Wow. RT's ability to elicit such emotion (through his lyrics or playing) are part of what make him such a treasure.
All of the songs are at least good, and most are outright great. In my opinion, this album will stand with RT's all-time bests.

Whipped Cream: Not for the Lactose Intolerant........2007-04-29
This is a prime example of the 60's "concept" album, with all of the intrumentals named after food. Lollipops & Roses." "A Taste of Honey" and the Dating Game theme "Whipped Cream." Etc. Etc. It caught the Zietgeist and rode it like a wave. Boys in Elementary School were inspired to learn the trumpet. I, among them.
I think the first record I purchased was Herb Alpert & TJB, but it wasn't this album, it was a 45 single.
I later did get this album, and several others of theirs, and then my neighbor's mother borrowed it for a wild party, and it got scratched from all the crazy drunken dancing.

There have been plenty of attempts to anthologize this venerable Southern band's extensive catalog, but this is the first one to get it right. Spreading 32 tracks from just over 30 years of albums across two discs, the immaculately sequenced compilation plays like a well-conceived piece. From the flute-dominated "Take the Highway," the opening cut of their 1973 debut, the Marshall Tucker Band avoided the typical Southern-boogie-rockin'-guitar path later epitomized by their more rowdy brethren the Outlaws, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Molly Hatchet. Rather, Tucker presented a more laid-back, country-based approach, highlighted by the jazzy playing of woodwind player Jerry Eubanks and drummer Paul Riddle.Although the Capricorn/Warner Bros. decade that ended in 1983 accounts for the bulk of these selections, the last half of the second disc presents a revamped lineup led by sole original member/lead singer Doug Gray, continuing the musical legacy with remarkably engaging results. The 24-page booklet featuring a detailed history, a live CD-ROM track, and crisply remastered sound further enhance the experience that finally bestows upon this underrated band the comprehensive, classy, and long-overdue retrospective it deserves. --Hal Horowitz

Pianist Keiko Matsui, a favorite among smooth jazz and crossover fans for her elegant melodic style, breaks new ground on several fronts with Moyo. Having split with her husband Kazu Matsui, who produced her previous albums, she produced it herself, for a new label (Shout Factory), and recorded much of it in South Africa (as well as Japan, New York, California, and Colorado). Moyo has a high special-guest quotient: trumpeter Hugh Masekela, saxophonists Paul Taylor and Gerald Albright, and singer-bassist Richard Bona are featured. But the clean and sometimes spare arrangements allow the personal nature of the writing to come through. When Matsui trusts in the forceful lyricism of her playing, as on the title track (Swahili for "Heart and Soul"), she makes the strongest impression. But even when she employs synthesizer and soprano sax sweetening, the songs maintain their honest expression. The rhythmic thrust of South African-derived songs such as "After the Rain" may well open her up to a new audience. --Lloyd SachsAlbum Description
Contemporary jazz icon Keiko Matsui's new album, (Swahili for "heart and soul"), recorded with local musicians in South Africa, Japan and the United States, introduces new sounds and rhythms to her elegant piano melodies and gentle jazz grooves. For this project, Keiko invited other artists into the creative process, including legendary trumpeter Hugh Masakela, sax player Gerald Albright, soprano sax player Paul Taylor, bassist/vocalist Richard Bona, drummer Akira Jimbo and vocalist Waldemar Bastos.Customer Reviews:

The Turtles are one of the most fondly remembered '60s pop actsquite an achievement considering that they came up in an era dominated by Motown, The Beatles and other musical giants. After releasing a series of chart-topping singles, including the #1 hit "Happy Together," the band broke up in 1970. Singers Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan continued as a duo under the name Flo & Eddie, recording albums, hosting their own syndicated radio show, and singing backup for T. Rex, John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Blondie, and many others. In 1985, they reformed The Turtles as a very successful touring outfit.Happy Together: The Very Best Of The Turtles collects the band's biggest hits, including the career-defining "Happy Together" and Top 20 smash hits "You Showed Me," "You Baby," and "Elenore." The album also features an early Warren Zevon-penned song, "Outside Chance," and Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe," as well as the classic protest anthem "Eve of Destruction."

The third low-tech, high-impact recording from the Akron, Ohio, duo is once again a loud and lively confirmation that passion, not precision, is what the blues is all about. With Dan Auerbach's insistent, abrasive guitar tone and drummer Patrick Carney's violent percussion workouts, the Black Keys' sound thrashes about with industrial-strength garage-band energy, but it also connects directly to the core sensibilities of the original blues creators with its primal expressions of pain and pride. With Auerbach shouting out the vocals the duo rocks hard in its stripped-down, ragged glory mode on Hendrix-influenced shredders like "10 A.M. Automatic" and "The Desperate Man," the fuzzed-out "Till I Get My Way," and the surprisingly swinging "Just Couldn't Tie Me Down." But it also delivers the same emotional intensity in a less frantic form on the moody mini-masterpiece "The Lengths." And, for all the justifiable fascination with the out-of-control excitement of the duo's punkish instrumental approach, the group continues to excel at songcraft, a talent expressed both in its own material and in its ability to recognize and expand the disguised merits of lesser-known cover songs. It follows a previous Beatles rarity recording with a nod to the Kinks this time via a personalized cover of "Act Nice and Gentle," probably the last thing the Black Keys would ever be accused of being. --Michael PointCustomer Reviews:

Singer/guitarist sounds like a real down an out 40 year old delta bluesman and the drummer redifines high hat work. All from Ohio for Gods sake, I never would have believed it myself. Very blues but very fresh blues, yes? Sooooo smooth. The only good thing from the movie Rest Stop was the discovery of this band. "Keep me clean, keep me warm, keep my soul away from harm." Album Description
After a meteoric rise to fame as the leader of the Tijuana Brass, one of the most successful groups of the '60s, Herb Alpert focused on running A&M Record's, the indie powerhouse he had founded with partner Jerry Moss. His second artistic journey began with the release of "Rise," a sultry dance instrumental, in 1979. It became the biggest hit of his career, winning a Grammy and climbing to number one on the Billboard chart, making him the only recording artist to have a number one record as a vocalist and as an instrumentalist. Alpert and his nephew Randy "Badazz" Alpert, who had cowritten "Rise," created an entire album around his new, laidback sound, and Rise, the album, was born, topping the charts and providing a significant new chapter to Alpert's already accomplished career.Customer Reviews:

"RISE" -- Remastered and Expanded!.......2007-06-03
This CD is another high quality reissue in the Signature Series. As far as improved sound over the previous CD issue, there is no comparison. "Rise" and "Rotation" even sound remarkably better than they did on DEFINITIVE HITS which wasn't mastered all that many years ago. The drums and fanfare on "1980" come barrelling out of the speakers to let you know up front that there are some serious sonic improvements on this new edition of the album. On "Rise" the voices from the first bass break are much more audible, on "Rotation" the opening percussion has an echo that I've never been able to distinguish before. It gives the intro to the song a bounce that only improves upon what was already my favorite track on the album. Louis Johnson's bass on "Love Is" is much more pronounced -- it really restores the snap to Johnson's slap and the whole track sounds much fresher. There's too many things going on in "Aranjuez" to discuss, but they all sound better now due to a first rate remastering job. As the crazy-mad-one-star-reviewer pointed out earlier, Alpert did resequence the album, swapping "Street Life" with "Aranjuez". This keeps the orginal "Aranjuez" track from being too close to the bonus track remix though, and personally, I think the order of the songs works just fine. The new version of "Aranjuez" is listed as a 2007 dance mix but there really isn't a whole lot that's been changed on the track and I have to agree with Crazy-mad-one-star-reviewer once again when he says that the track doesn't seem all that modern dance-wise. But there are some noticeable differences -- the Spanish guitar intro has been cut and the drums have been remixed to the point where it doesn't scream "Disco!" as much as the '79 original. It's a good mix and I think I may like it as much, maybe even a little more, than the original version. The other bonus track is a new version of "Rotation". I originally thought they had included a '79/'80 era dance version of the song but this version sounds like it would be right at home on the WHIPPED CREAM RE-WHIPPED album along with "Lemon Tree" and "Ladyfingers". At any rate, it's a great version and I think fans of the original will like it.
I always thought RISE was a great album and really deserved all of its success. With this reissue, I think it's become an even better album.
