Only punk rock entrepreneur Malcolm McClaren would think of putting a 15-year-old Burmese temptress (Annabella Lwin) in a wisp of a loin cloth in front of a bunch of guys with painted faces, all beating on drums. Bow Wow Wow, another of his projects after the Sex Pistols, was a celebration of all things tribal. Songs like "Golly Golly Go Buddy!" and "TV Savage" were percussive enough to rattle everything in the cupboards with Annabella's sing-song vocals barely, if not enthusiastically, carrying the melodies. There was a great deal borrowed from primitive chants, and "Prince of Darkness" and "Chihuahua" both sounded as if the band was conjuring up some voodoo spirits. "I Want Candy," Bow Wow Wow's biggest hit, reverberated with a big hollow body guitar lead and again drums, drums, and more drums. By the time of "Candy" and "Louis Quatorze" Annabella's vocals were starting to mature past the yelps, and she finally sounded as if she could catch her breath. Her solo turn, "Fever" had Lwin fully in control of her sensuality, and her version of the classic is as strong as any. When assembled en masse, Bow Wow Wow's Best of suggests the band was more than just a McClaren footnote, being contenders in their own right. --Steve Gdula

5 out of 5 stars Endless repackaging of their songs...but the 12" versions here, cool.......2006-01-12

We saw them in San Diego in 1984 I think. Totally danceable. That double bass drum sound fascinates me today even and I watched the drummer wondering how he did it. This band has to have more variations of their songs on so many different compilations of their own songs that, well, I can't think of another band with as many.

Annabella makes this band with her facinating voice. Missed seeing them live in 2004, wish we had, see how they've held up. All these songs are lovely. Can you sample with the listen button? Constant double bass drum like a real jungle sound, then her very clean pure voice singing a variety of love songs with lyrics that sort of have a New York sophistication though, of course, they're from England. They don't really fit being called New Wave, they made their own sound and it's quite fun. No downer songs, not punk, yet the pop about them is nothing sachrine, it's robusto.

I was lucky enough to buy about 6 of their 7"s at a used record swap meet in Long Beach about 1986 all for about $1.50 each. Fun packaging on everything they released usually.

If you don't already own several of their records this is definitely a greatest hits. I admit, I don't have this exact version and I'm intrigued to see what the 12" versions sound like. chrisbct@hotmail.com

Bow Wow Wow is not a Household Name, They Charted Once in the USA with "I want Candy" (Top 50), and released only 3 Proper Albums...Their Sound is Tribal, the Lead Singer Annabella often Yelps to Percussive Drumming and throbbing Bass, The Mixture yields Many Great Tunes, but it can take getting used to, as it did for Me, I was not a Fan untill much listening...If You don't know a lot of the Group's Songs, I suggest listening to as many 30 second Samples as possible to get a feeling of whether this stuff is digestible...Most of the Songs here are first-rate, I particularly Love "TV Savage", "Golly Golly Go Buddy!" and "Louis Qatorze", along with Annabella's Solo Turn "Fever"....If You want to explore further, I suggest the CD "Girl Bites Dog: Your Compact Disc Pet" to round out Your Collection, it includes more Gems, such as "Sexy Effiel Tower" (Where 14 Year-Old Annabella Pants Orgasmically...and more authentically than Donna Summer)and "Radio G String", as well as 3 Cuts from this CD in different versions; But begin here, and don't go further unless You Adore this CD....

5 out of 5 stars Actually...the band *is* "the Ants" :).......2005-09-25

...and not a "rip off" thereof. Adam "Ant" left the band...the band (Adam and the Ants) and their manager found a new singer, and a new direction, in Myant Myant Aye...er, Anabella Lwin.

Just wanted to clear that "rip off/stolen" thing up...and add that I listen to this record often...C30,C60,C90 Go!...relevant for our times, even tho a lot of people don't know what a C30/60/90 even is anymore :)

        5 out of 5 stars I hate nostalgia, but..........2003-06-09

This record conjures up fond memories and at the same time is proof-positive that Bow Wow Wow was way before its time. I just love "Where's My Snake" and "Chihuahua" which were hard to find in the 80's (at least for me), and it is nice to have a compilation like this that presents the true essence of this original, fun band. Great, great fun!!

3 out of 5 stars Get the import!.......2003-05-30

Bow Wow Wow have some great tunes, but my favorites are all on the IMPORT The Best of Bow Wow Wow, not this domestic version. The import has the original versions, which I prefer. The tracks on the domestic CD are overproduced and play like "extended disco versions".

5 out of 5 stars I haven't listened to this stuff since the 80's...........2001-03-27

...I must say it's nice to come back to after hearing the dreck that's out nowadays. The drums & bass on this CD are far above what you hear these days. The bass player is very funky in a non-overkill-slapping way (e.g. Flea). He's sort of a cross between Rocco Prestia (Tower of Power) with a little bit of Mark King (another Brit, from Level 42) thrown in. Very rhythmic stuff and more power to them in pulling it off in a post-punk/new-wave pop era & style. One thing the CD lacks is the naughty song "Sexy Eiffel Tower" which is sort of the 80's version of a Donna Summer album (a lot of heavy breathing). But overall this is an excellent CD for the money for an underrated and hard-to-find band.

...and not a "rip off" thereof.
