Editorial Reviews

From URB Magazine
Forget Ja Rule; if you're seeking the most hated man in hip-hop, look no further than Dose One. With their obtuse poetics and lo-fi symphonies, Dose and Anticon cohorts Why? and Odd Nosdam are redrawing the rules of rap - whether you like it or not.For its sophomore album, cLOUDDEAD reemerge from a land where rhymes reside peacefully alongside indie-rock melodies and fey folktronic accents. Sifting through the rubble of collapsed genres, the trio unearths a handful of precious gems, furnishing "Dead Dogs Two" with snippets of funereal organ, clip-clop percussion and their own plaintive vocal harmonies. Elsewhere, "Rhymer's Only Room" gives us an idea what drunken Gregorian chanters might sound like while "The Velvet Ant" finds Dose relating a run-on fable about barnyard animals. Closer in spirit to Matmos' The Civil War than to any rap record, Ten dares you to let your inner child out to play. Last one to the seesaw's a rotten egg!

Part of the '90s Seattle grunge triumvirate completed by Nirvana and Soundgarden, Pearl Jam debuted with Ten, their most accessible, least self-conscious album. Over time, PJ's rep as a politically correct band just a little too above it all to prostitute its music on MTV has nearly superseded the music. But before that, they were a simply an in-your-face, in-your-head, loud, melodic rock band. And lead singer Eddie Vedder was known for his possessed stage presence and a primal growl that sounded like it required three vocal chords. The personal, narrative singles "Alive," "Jeremy," and "Even Flow" catapulted the reluctant band into the 10-million-plus-sales division. Subsequent albums are more intricate, subtle, thematically complex, and, in many ways, better than Ten. But the band may never repeat the stampede caused by this debut. --Beth Bessmer

3 out of 5 stars Ten is not their best in my honest opinion.........2007-07-13

I have just gotten in to Pearl Jam, and after listening to their first 3 albums MANY times, I think I can safely say that TEN is NOT their best out of the three. I personally thought the biggest weakness in this album was how EVERY track sounded the same. I mean I seriously couldnt tell which track was which. Thats not to say the album is terrible...I think its actually quite good, just not the amazing ground breaking album everyone makes it out to be.
"Once", "Even Flow", "Alive", "Jeremy" and "Black" are superb songs which are gems on their own. I actually cannot class this as a grunge album...Vedders vocals are way too spot on and great, the music is quite normal rock music and the production isnt so distorted. They DID go more grunge with VS. and VITALOGY, my more preffered albums.
Overall, Im not comparing this to Nirvana's NEVERMIND which I believe is a better grunge record, but this album isnt the best ever...Try out VS. and VITALOGY..they capture what the band want to do and succeed very well.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums off all time.......2007-07-11

One of the best albums off all time, seriously. This album meant so much to me when it first came out. It really spoke to me at that time in my life. Years later I find it is still a solid album. Your collection needs this album :)

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Ten.......2007-06-29

There is a reason that this cd has been considered by many to one of the greatest debuts of all time. Every single song on this cd is absolutely perfect. I just can't get enough of this cd. The lyrics are unforgettable, i.e. "Try to erase this from the blackboard" from Jeremy, and "I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky" from Black, and Mike McCready delivers some of the best guitar solos of any grunge band of the day. And no one but Eddie Vetter could pull of such beautiful singing, and to me he might be one of the greatest vocalists of all time, along with Layne Staley and Chris Cornell. So if you're only going to buy one Pearl Jam cd (you're crazy) make it this one. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A Pure 100% Masterpiece.......2007-06-13

Ten, the first Pearl Jam album, has always been a great record ever since it came out. Very highly rated, and it truly deserves it. Even though I dont regard this album as Pearl Jams best, by no means so, it has aged very well and still sounds amazing. The album is just pure raw energy put into music form. Its hard to believe how much emotion/energy is put into these songs. If you listen to the lyrics in every song you can feel Eddie Vedders pain as he grew up. All the lyrics are awesome resulting in very good songwriting. That songwriting is amongst the best the band has ever done. Mike Mccready is one of my favorite guitarists as well. His work on the album is one of his best for sure. The solos and all are just mindblowing. Not because they are complex or hard to play, but because they all are played with feel, not complexity. The whole album just feels like one big rush of angry emotion. This is a masterpiece and always will be.

5 out of 5 stars A truly legendary album that stands the test of time.......2007-04-07

I remember when this album was first released - I was 12 years old, and just really starting to get heavily into music. My real captivation with grunge started with Nirvana - I saw the music video for "Smells Like Teen Spirit," and was just captivated - it was a far cry from the music that had been extremely popular in the late eighties (songs like "She Drives Me Crazy" by Fine Young Cannibals, for example). Then, here comes Pearl Jam, with a very different sound than Nirvana (more influenced by classic rock than punk), but an equally invigorating and new one. This album was just HUGE in its time, and the main hits ("Even Flow," "Alive," and "Jeremy") were played EVERYWHERE. Even if you were a fan of Pearl Jam, it was pretty hard not to get tired of them as this album continued to sell in massive quantities all through the nineties.

In retrospect, it was truly an important album that helped shape an entire decade of music, and ushered in a truly legendary (albeit brief) era. Grunge. All of a sudden, sounding original and being musically talented were in style, and "Ten" is one of the key albums that paved the way for nearly all of the now legendary bands of the 90's (such as Radiohead and The Smashing Pumpkins).

And, musically, it truly holds up over time, because Pearl Jam are a band that are truly talented. The time in which "Ten" was released may have helped catapult them to the top of the charts, but their artistry is what has kept them there throughout their career. Listening to "Ten" now is actually more enjoyable for me than it was, say, ten years ago when I'd heard it so many times I knew every word.

Recommended strongly to any fan of rock music.

On their third album, Disturbed don't as much break out of expected patterns as show their potential for doing so. Fans eager for more of the band's patented fist-thumping gruel will take satisfaction in the album's opening (and anthemic) title track, plus "I'm Alive" and "Forgiven." The band shines brightest in the record's early moments, where "Deify," "Guarded," "Just Stop," and "Stricken" demonstrate that this unit's capable of discovering a song's subtleties and crafting radio-ready choruses meant to uplift the souls of disenfranchised subdivision dwellers. The album isn't without its problems--come the halfway mark ("Sons of Plunder") vocalist David Draiman and his mates lapse into the expected, with a series of songs that are good but rarely as remarkable as those found in Act I. That said, Ten Thousand Fists ultimately reminds us that Disturbed refuse to relent in their journey toward greatness. --Jedd Beaudoin

Album Description

After a triple-platinum debut and platinum follow-up, Disturbed fuses the brutality and darkness of 2000's The Sickness with the added melodic nature and complexity of 2002's Believe for album number three. Aggressive, relentless and intense-yet at the same time transcendent-Ten Thousand Fists is a rock sledgehammer.

As of today, June 27, I still have not received this item after being charged for it back in May.

5 out of 5 stars gotta love disturbed.......2007-06-20

I have to start this admitting that Disturbed is my all-time favorite Band. There is just nobody out there that makes better music that fits ME and
David's Vocals still give me the chills! I personally never understood the criticism they received after "Believe" came out and also after "Then Thousand Fists". I think all three of the albums are strong and great!

Ten Thousand Fists features a great array of songs...which my favorite one must be Deify...even though it may be seen as a little too political it's a great tune with an awesome meaning!!! The biggest surprise on this album was to me was "Stricken"... anybody that has ever been hurt by somebody (and I know we pretty much all have been :-) should be easily able to identify this song!

Can't wait for the next Album to come out!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2007-06-19

Simply a Classic Hard Rock Cd! Don't take my word, Listen for yourself! You won't be Dissappointed!

5 out of 5 stars 10k Fists rox my sox off.......2007-05-17

The thing about Disturbed is you either love them madly, or hate them completely. There is no middle ground.

Having said that, I saw Disturbed in concert about a month before this CD was released, and they played many of the songs from the CD during the show. Having "Believe" practically committed to memory (I've bought it 3 times because I wore out the first two), I was hoping that Ten Thousand Fists was more of the same.

It was better than I expected. I was blown away! One song I don't recall them playing in concert was the Genesis cover "Land of Confusion". If a cover can be better than the original, then this is the one that did it! All the songs are good, even the political ones, and gets me going every time I pop the CD into the player.

What impresses me the most about Disturbed is how intelligent David Draiman is, and it shows in his lyrics. The musicians are clearly skilled and compliment Draiman's lyrics and powerful vocals. And I do have to agree with the reviewer that said the "monkey howl" or whatever the devil that vocalization is that Draiman does, doesn't translate in a live performance (not that he doesn't try).

I'm not your typical metal fan. I do, however, like to rock, and always have. The two Disturbed discs I have (Believe and Ten Thousand Fists) do that for me-- in other words, rox my sox off!

I could, as others here have done, rate each song, but since they're all good for any number of reasons, I'll refrain.

And, I've always maintained that once you see an act in concert, you'll become a fan. I liked Disturbed before i saw them in concert. Since then, I'm a fan! And I love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Disturbed...Best Band W/O excessive Hardcore Screams.......2007-04-25

The only regret I have about getting this album is that I waited so long to get it. Disturbed's 1st album, The Sickness, was awesome. The CD was one of the first that got me into metal and rarely left my CD player. When Believe came out I got it 1st day. I was slightly dissappointed because it was a little softer and his "monkey scream" subsided. Because of this dissappointment I did not get 10000 Fists when it came out. It wasn't until seeing the rockin at Ozzfest once again and hearing the new songs played that my eyes were opened. I was worried at first but the second the band left the stage at Ozzfest I knew I had to get that CD.

Needless to say I bought the album ASAP and have not regretted it one bit. Disturbed is the only band that does not scream that I can listen to over and over again and not get bored with.

2 out of 5 stars someone please call Jim, Carolyn, and Sharon, ...fast!.......2007-07-22

I have been a long time Corrs fan and natually had to purchase this disc. If you are someone who was a Corrs fan and am considering to experience a small piece of essence of that work from this release, you will be very disappointed. Gone are the beautiful melodies of the group, the passionate solo vocal work of Andrea. Perhaps it is the new direction/genre she has taken, electro pop/whatever, but in the Corrs work it seemed as Andrea was required to stretch her vocals, or maybe the subject matter of Ireland's struggles assisted to provide a better vocal platform. I found the vocals on this release, lazy and very flat.

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2007-07-21

I think her debut album is awesome. It's nice she broke from what was expected with a vengance. Each song is like a little story and it makes the whole album just fit together. I think it is a wonderful album and each song is great-You will want to listen to over and over again.

4 out of 5 stars A nice new direction for Andrea!.......2007-07-15

Andrea Corr was the lead vocalist of the Irish family quartet, The Corrs, and "Ten feet high" is her solo debut.

Produced by Nelle Hooper (Garbage, Björk, Madonna, U2, Soul II Soul), and executive produced by Bono (both of whom are the reason I gave it a listen, and eventually got it), it comprises a few Corrs style pop/folk songs, but mainly steers Andrea in an electro pop direction, a welcome change as I feel the Corrs sound had gotten rather tired.

Opening the disc are two upbeat pop songs; the marching feel of "Have a nice day", and the piano sprinkled "Anybody there".

Lead off single "Shame on you (to keep my love from me)" is available in two versions; a more atmospheric, stripped down version, and a dance edit which closes the disc. The lyrics tell the tale of a lover missing his/her partner who has gone off to war.

Staying on the upbeat side of things are "24 hours", and the excellent throbbing club song "Take me I'm yours" with buzzing and swirling synths, it's a cover of a Squeeze song and is one of my favourites.

Standouts however are the downtempo songs; the lullaby-like "I do" (complete with tinkling bells), "Ten feet high", "Champagne from a straw" (nice choppy feel with a great sax break), the delicate acoustic/piano ballad "This is what it's all about" (another favourite of mine), "Stupidest girl in the world" (nice piano set to hip hop beats), and the wistful folk feel of "Ideal world" with lyrics looking at different life situations - family, loneliness, low self esteem.

It does take a few spins to grow on you but a nice debut from Andrea Corr.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Debut.......2007-07-08

If you are expecting songs just like the Corrs did, forget it. This album won't be for you. Andrea is showing us a much bolder side as she steps out on her own with this album: an excellent step in the right direction for Andrea.

I enjoy the wide (VERY wide) variation in music, showing that she is not limited to any one or two formulas. I love the quieter songs that willingly expose the flaws in her voice; it makes her more human and the songs that much more personal. Too much pop these days is expected to be perfect, even at concerts. Andrea brings us the human side, with a LOT of personality here.

Admittedly it took a few listens for it to really grow on me. At first I was very unsure, but now I can't stop listening. One issue I do have with the album is that the vocals can sometimes get lost in the music a bit too easy, making it hard to understand.

I look forward to more of Andrea in the future.

2 out of 5 stars A Wrong Direction.......2007-07-07

Andrea, I'll follow wherever you go. Always. However painful. And this is painful. An electronic Kate Bush is the immediate comparison that springs to mind. But without the melody. This is mediocre electronic pop focussing on rhythmn at the expense of melody. And where did that voice we know and love go?

A funny thing happens around track three of Ten, Brian McKnight's intricate, nuanced, and very grown-up follow-up to 2005's Gemini: he starts sounding like Daryl Hall. It's a blip overall, but it's indicative of McKnight's chameleon-like way with an R&B song. At times he stands unapologetically in the shadows of Marvin Gaye (see "Shoulda Been Lovin' You"), at times he tries on Luther Vandross's silky tones ("Don't Take Your Love Away"), and at times he leans in a direction that seems carved from a cross-section of the two ("Holdin' On"). The dip into Daryl Hall is a neat addition--a cool swerve that should protect McKnight from predictability charges. More than that, it demonstrates a clear-eyed artistic approach. It doesn't necessarily make him a smooth-singing maverick, though. Tim & Bob, the studio wizards who helped score hits for Bobby Valentino, Donell Jones, and others, cowrote four of Ten's strongest tracks, the radio hit "Used To Be My Girl" among them. And Rascal Flatts, the country act, teams up for the flag-waving, well-intentioned "Red, White, and Blue." McKnight's maneuvers, shot through with versatility, haven't failed him yet; on a scale of one to ten, Ten rates a nine. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars grew on me.......2007-06-27

I've been a bmac fan since 1992 while in college his first album hit. He's been my favorite artist since that time but I always felt his first album was by far his best. The first few times listening to Ten I didn't really feel it but I think it's because I was listening to the more popular tracks. Don't get me wrong, those tracks are very good but you have to listen to the complete album to realize that Brian has truly put out something special here. It's stuck in my car's CD player now. It is by far my favorite album he's ever made. There is something for everyone here from the old skool brian with his ballads to the more smoother soulful icon he's become to the more esoteric fan base and music lovers that buy his work. I hear Marvin Gaye's voice some here especially track 8. For my money he's the best artist on the planet when in true form as he is here. It's just a shame that the music industry machine hasn't gotten him the accolades his career deserves. Keep 'em coming like this Brian. For the fans that didn't like this one, listen to it again. Eventually you'll "hear" it. And on track 9 where he tells the girl this is goodbye. If you're a guy and you don't feel that, you better check your pulse.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Brian McKnight.......2007-05-30

I love this cd, thank you to Brian for a job well done. I am so happy with what he has done in this album. From beginning to end I was thrilled to pieces. Plus, it is great for the lovers out there. Bottom line, I love it!

5 out of 5 stars Brian at his best!.......2007-05-21

I want to keep this short...this is his best CD to date. The years of his music talent has matured to the best he has ever made. Every track is worthy of listening and radio play if possible. Great CD...don't sleep! Go get it!
One Love...(Two fingers) Marvrlous1, out.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-04-24

Anyone that knows me knows that I am a huge Brian McKnight fan. I have followed his career from the very beginning and I generally buy his albums without a thought. However for the first time, I don't think I am going to buy this album. A friend lent me her copy and I have been trying to give it a fair listen. However, I can't help thinking as I listen to the album that Brian McKnight is an artist that has lost his way. From early times it was clear that his strength was sweet syrupy ballads and a mature sound. However, he has for some time now been trying to attract a younger audience. I don't necessarily have a problem with that but even with the collaborations with rappers and the supposedly hot young producers, there would always be at least 2 or 3 songs on each album that made you go "wow, that was nice!". With the album 10, while some of the tracks are OK, there is nothing to make me actually want to buy this album. The OK tracks are - What's My Name, More and More and A Little Too Late. I like the live rhythm section sound of Don't Take Your Love Away, but somehow it sounds suspiciously like Janet Jackson's "I Get So Lonely".

I think Brian needs to get back to his real roots - great ballads and smooth uptempo grooves with great harmony and nice chord changes. He seems also to have almost completely lost that jazz edge that he had before. It seems as though he is simply going for commercial success. The ironic question is - how successful have his recent albums been? How big have his collaborations with rappers and flavour-of-the-month producers been? Not very. I am afraid that "10" won't do very well either. So regrettably I won't be buying this album.

2 out of 5 stars What happened to Brian McKnight?.......2007-04-19

What happened to B. McKnight? This album is just lousy compared to his other works. I am a fan of his music but this album dissapointed me. Its noticeable that he strayed away from his usual style and opted for imitating the style of other performers. The songwriting is just bad, melodies are bad, voice not the best, and it looks he just wanted to get this album out quick without putting much effort into the songs. Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of his music, and U-turn was excellent, but this one frankly dissapointed me. In my humble opinion, most definitely NOT his best work!

The former jazzman-turned-punk is now more middle-of-the-road than a yellow stripe. But Ten Summoner's Tales is by far the most engaging of his solo records. The singles "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You" and "Fields of Gold" prove the man can lighten up long enough to go deep. "She's Too Good For Me" would have been a good Police single if it weren't for the pseudo-classical midsection that takes its joke far too seriously. Still, you wish he would loosen up and enjoy the rock once in a while. --Robert Wilonsky

4 out of 5 stars Hold on for some great ones.......2007-05-29

Sting's album ten summoners tale's hits some high notes....quite literally.
It includes the super hit Fields of Gold which is a timeless beautiful song, and the uplifting If I ever loose my faith in you- which is quite fun to listen to. It also includes the slow dramatic shape of my heart.
Shape of my heart's music has since been borrowed by both Monica and Craig David.
The CD has a lot of flow, and versatillity and prooves why even though we can't have the Police anymore, why we're glad Sting is a solo act. He can carry the show on his own as he prooves his with his deep mellow voice, and interesting ground breaking sounds.

5 out of 5 stars MMMM Sting.......2007-01-10

I don't think he can come out with a bad CD. He makes me smile with some of his songs, cry with others and get the chills at his uncanny talent.
It is always different in style, but I always get the best out of them.
He is truely an ICON.

5 out of 5 stars ...a rare perfect album..........2006-10-24

i won't dignify this album with a review, or analysis, because, it simply doesn't need, or deserve one...

all that needs to be said is...this is one of those rare perfect albums that, every once in a harvest, comes together as one from beginning to end...

my only regret...'fields of gold' should never have been a hit single...don't get me wrong...it's a great song...but, it's just a part of the entire piece, that shouldn't be disected for the masses...

it's intelligent, it's brilliant, it's...well, it's just the way it 'all' is...

5 out of 5 stars Sting - TEN SUMMONER'S TALES (1993).......2006-07-24

Having vented his sorrow over his father's death through THE SOUL CAGES, Sting returned more upbeat and playful than ever on 1993's TEN SUMMONER'S TALES. Widely regarded as Sting's best album, TEN SUMMONER'S TALES - the title being a pun on Sting's surname - is a collection of ten songs, each telling a story, as well as a prologue ("If I Ever Lose My Faith In You") and an epilogue ("Nothing 'Bout Me"). This was destroyed on the US and Canadian releases, as the "Prologue" was dropped from the title of "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" and one of the album's finest songs, "Everybody Laughed But You", was inexplicably omitted. Sting has never been better either lyrically or musically; these songs are at once funny and very powerful. "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" and the beautiful "Fields Of Gold" are the album's classic songs, but every song is wonderful, particularly "Seven Days", "Something The Boy Said" (which would have made a fine Police song), "Shape Of My Heart" (featured in the end credits of Luc Besson's LEON), "Saint Augustine In Hell" and the highly amusing "Heavy Cloud No Rain". Though it still can't surpass its predecessor, THE SOUL CAGES, TEN SUMMONER'S TALES ranks directly behind it on the list of Sting's finest solo work.

An updated read on William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, Gil Junger's 10 Things I Hate About You is a teen comedy about two sisters on opposite ends of the social spectrum: one is pretty and popular, the older sister is bitter and vengeful. Family rules dictate that the younger sibling can't date until the older one has. You see where this is going. The soundtrack features Letters to Cleo in a '70s mood covering Cheap Trick's "I Want You to Want Me" and Nick Lowe's "Cruel to Be Kind." Sweden's Cardigans include a rare B-side, "War." George Clinton's "Atomic Dog," Joan Armatrading's "The Weakness in Me," and Madness's "Wings of a Dove" still sound fresh. The only real misstep is Sister Hazel's "Your Winter," which sounds like a Seven Mary Three parody, full of breast-beating sincerity and lyrics that defy the laws of coherence. --Rob O'Connor

4 out of 5 stars Awesome Soundtrack.......2007-01-04

Totally recomendable for sparetime listening good music. I like the song Your Winter performed by Sister Hazel, is terrific.
By the way, the movie is great too. Julie Stiles, Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon Levitt and Larisa Oleynik plays a funny characters.

5 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack for a GREAT movie.......2006-12-26

I loved 10 Things I Hate About You, and the music plays such an important role in the movie, so I got the soundtrack and I love it. While many are complaining that a lot of songs are missing I don't think they know that it is impossible to put EVERY song on the album. Letters to Cleo is a great band and the songs weren't available on iTunes so this was great. I TOTALLY recommend this soundtrack and the movie.

1 out of 5 stars sucks........2006-11-30

this cd sucks, none of the good songs from the movie are on it.

Biggie, Bare Naked Ladies, "Just Be Good To Me" were not on this cd. Those and others that were missing were the reasons I wanted it.

It didn't live up to my expectations. I really loved the movie and most of the music but the cd only had one or two really good songs from the movie.

Amazon.com essential recording

Warner Bros. did with the CD release of the 1970 vinyl LP 10 Years Together: Best of Peter, Paul & Mary what every label should do with CD reissues of vinyl compilations. They took into account the longer length of CDs and added tracks. The original release of 10 smash hits has been fleshed out here with three additional tracks, including a melodic take on Dylan's Basement Tapes rarity "Too Much of Nothing." Otherwise, it's hits and nothing but hits, ranging from definitive folk interpretations ("If I Had a Hammer") to pop ("I Dig Rock 'n' Roll Music") to Dylan and Gordon Lightfoot covers that compete with the originals and first brought such material to the mainstream. Only "Cruel War" is missing. --Bill Holdship

4 out of 5 stars Good music, but misleading professional review.......2006-10-18

I'm sure that all of us who remember PP&M welcome a CD reissue if only because we won't have to listen to the scratches and the skips that a well-loved record album is burdened by. But I'm surprised at the Amazon review posted ahead of all the "amateurs" because there are NO NEW TRACKS on the CD. The record has 13 tracks, not 10, as the review so prominently claims. I agree with the other amateur reviewers who would like to hear some of the other PP&M songs added, such as "This Land is Your Land" and "Where Have all the Flowers Gone." And it's understandable that all the recording company wanted to do was reissue the original. But please, Amazon, don't advertise a product as something it's not.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic of American Folk Music.......2006-10-08

I still have this on vinyl, but just never bother with the stereo anymore. I pounced on the CD and popped it into my player, so once again I can relive the sound that meant so much to me in my college days. It's still a mellow blending of voices and a great selection of songs.
You get your classic folk tunes (Blowin' in the Wind and If I Had a Hammer), plus 60s songs like Too Much of Nothing and I Dig Rock and Roll Music. I love their version of Lemon Tree and you just have to have Puff the Magic Dragon.
A marvelous album!

4 out of 5 stars 38 minutes of Greatest Hits.......2006-01-18

First released on LP in 1970, this greatest hits album contains several of the big hits by Peter, Paul, and Mary, the folk trio from the '60's whose classic works include "Puff the Magic Dragon" and their covers of Pete Seeger's "If I Had a Hammer," John Denver's "Leaving on a Jet Plane," and Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind." The group's sound consisted of simple, feel-good, peace-loving, almost naive, harmonies with spare instrumentation (usually just guitars and acoustic bass) and without much of a hint of an edge (realizing that some of their music was "protest music" in spirit and assuming for the moment that "Puff!" wasn't about lighting up a doobie). This formula garnered them a loyal following in the '60's and no doubt has today's greying listeners harkening back to those good old days. Anyone who was a fan and hasn't heard them for years will find this a warm reminder of the classic tunes and times.

It's always a bit difficult to review a Greatest Hits album -- people always quibbling about what songs in their opinion were unjustly left out and which they could have done without. I always think that's pointless, but I can't resist jumping on the bandwagon this time... True, this CD release improves on the earlier LP version by adding 3 tracks, but the total playing time still only comes to less than 38 minutes. That just doesn't cut it for me in the age of the CD format. So, what would I add? Well, how about "This Land is Your Land," "Where Have All The Flowers Gone," or "Kumbaya," "Michael Row the Boat Ashore," "Down By The Riverside," or even "Because All Men Are Brothers." Ah, fair enough... if I'd wanted those tracks, I should have purchased either the 2CD collection, "Around the Campfire" or the newly released and remastered "The Very Best of Peter, Paul, and Mary." Don't get me wrong, "Ten Years Together" is a decent album with some classic hits from PPM, but if you want something more complete and a better value for your $, check out either of those two albums first -- I wish I had (and I wish I'd read a review that made this clear). Then again, with "The Very Best..." available now, you should be able to pick up "Ten Years Together" for a dollar or two.

4 out of 5 stars Crisp American folk music.......2005-10-16

A music collection that contains classical numbers from the classics of American folk music.

A collection that also makes me cruise to the 60's, both with its melodies and lyrics. The themes are socially and politically oriented making them even more universal.

Any 10k maniacs fan will LOVE this CD. All their best songs in 1 pkg.
Defintely a good buy and great CD.

2 out of 5 stars Flat & uninspiring.......2007-02-20

I'm a huge Natalie Merchant & 10,000 Maniacs fan, but this MTV Unplugged live concert is a big disappointment. I was hoping Natalie's crystalline natural voice would be enhanced without a recording studio's interference, but each song seems to have the same tempo, the same sound. The entire album was flat and uninspiring. I actually got sleepy driving to it. I'm too big a fan to give it 1 star, but this was a major disappointment.

3 out of 5 stars Hoping for more.......2006-12-28

This is a good CD but I did not find it to be great. Maybe it will grow on me over time but I don't think it will. I have been a big of Natalie Merchant's solo albums (With one exception). If I could give it 3.5 stars I would but I don't think its 4 star material. 10,000 Maniacs fans will like it but would be fans are better off getting some of their studio stuff. That's my 2 cents. Enjoy the music!!!

5 out of 5 stars Uno de los mejores discos que he escuchado.......2006-11-10

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2006-10-14

The 10,000 Maniacs have been around since 1981, and it has been a great ride. This album came out in 1993, and features Natalie Merchant's excellent vocals. The band survived Natalie's move to a solo career, and she has done well on her own, but I must say that this album is when they all reached their absolute peak! With the excellent instrumentation and Natalie's beautiful voice, this is a great album to listen to.

I love this album, and its mix of bouncy and soulful tunes, especially These Are Days, Jezebel and Because The Night. This is a great album, one that is sure to please anyone who loves great music, especially unplugged music. I love this album, and give it my highest recommendations!

This is a great CD that contains all of their hits. Hard to review because it's all pre-released music.

4 out of 5 stars Guess I like their newer stuff better.......2006-08-10

The newer music on the CD I liked much better than the older stuff. I should have just bought the CD that most of the newer songs were on. I actually had that tape and loved it but now have CD player in the car and thought if I liked that album I should like their other music too. But overall its not a waste like some best hits CDs out there.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best collections EVER, and that's CLEAR........2005-04-05

Unlike some other people, I find this "Best Of" to be perfect. Mostly because I always liked them when I heard them, but not enough to buy an album, so "Ten Years Gone" was made for me. This is also packed full of 21 songs, the more popular ones being "Wonderful", "Santa Monica", "AM Radio", and "I Will Buy You A New Life". Plus the excellent "Father Of Mine", which unfortunately many relate to, and 2 good covers of "The Boys Are Back In Town" and "Brown Eyed Girl". Most of what I didn't know I like now also. This collection should easily please most, but it probably won't be "Everything To Everyone".

1 out of 5 stars An Everclear Fan Who refuses to buy this Album.......2005-02-25

A Friend of mine bought this album and I listened to it. This compilation is a serious shortchange to Everclear's fans, and saddest of all, to themselves. Alexakis and Co. have seriously mislead themselves in almost all ways since Thier 2000 release of 'Songs from an American Movie: Part 1' For starters, what in the hell kind of title is that? It's lame, that's what. I only found two, maybe three songs on that album that I could keep listening to. I only bought 'Vol 2' to say that, yes, I owned all of their albums. I don't think there is one good song on Vol 2, especially when you line it up with anything they produced up until 1998. All songs on that album either consist of pathetic, blind rage, or pathetic, dithering, trivial matters. It is a long shot from their introspective, clever disapointment and sorrow that still somehow carries a touch of sunshine and hope, everclears trademarks.
I would have really liked to have seen some of their fantastic, less well known songs on this album like 'Sunflowers,' 'Amphetamine,' or 'White Men in Black Suits' off of 'So Much for the Afterglow', by far Everlears best album. Their inclusion of less well known songs from 'Sparkle and Fade' is good, but they really shortchange themselves on what they wrote during their early days on 'World of Noise'
Eveclear, I hope, is starting to show some hope. I believe that they have seen their last two albums for the failures that they are. Their sound has become extremely weak and uninspired, their lyrics a far cry from the smack-you-in the face stuff that they used to write. The only glimmer of hope I saw on their latest release, 'Slow-Motion Daydream' was 'Crysanthemum,' which heralds a very pure and stripped-away quality of acuoustic guitar, blended ever so slightly with effective sound effects of blowing wind and haunting lyrics. 'New York Times' is half way good, but is nothing that stands up above anything else that any unpublished poet or musician wrote to express their feelings in a post 9/11 world.
10 Years are definetly gone, and the last 4 of them are WAY gone. i hope you get your rear in gear Art. You've done it before, now do it again. I know '20 Years Gone' can be a much better shot.

5 out of 5 stars Everclear's Best Of is a great CD for anyone to own........2005-01-12

Everclear's Best Of is a great CD for anyone to own.

This is a great Everclear best of CD. I am glad there are 21 songs and that it is almost 80 minutes long. There are 2 b-sides on here called Local God (from the Romeo And Juliet soundtrack) and The Boys Are Back In Town (a Thin Lizzy cover that was originally a hit off of the Detroit Rock City soundtrack). There are also 2 new songs on here that were originally recorded during Everclear's recording sessions for their previous CD Slow Motion Daydream. The new songs are called Sex With A Movie Star (The Good Witch Gone Bad) and The New Disease.

The songs and what I think of them is the following:

#01. Wonderful - This is a great pop sounding song from them. It is a big hit too. This is a great song to listen to when you are in a good mood. Even though the lyrics sound happy, they are not.

#02. Santa Monica - This is a great rock song from them with a great beat and great words. This is this first big hit and the song that made them famous.

#03. Everything To Everyone - This is another good rock song that was a big hit. This was followed by other hit songs that broke them into the mainstream music concious.

#04. AM Radio - This is another big hit with a 70's feel to it. It surprised me by how popular it became. This is not a favorite of mine off of here, but I like it. It is a necessity for this CD.

#05. Volvo Driving Soccer Mom - I like this song a lot. It was a hit but not a big one. This song did not help their CD Slow Motion Daydream sell well because not many people liked this song I guess or that album.

#06. I Will Buy You A New Life - This song was a huge hit. I think it was either this song, Santa Monica, Father Of Mine, or Wonderful that was their biggest hit. This is the song that broke them into the mainstream music concious and made them a household name. If you didn't know Everclear from their song Santa Monica off their CD Sparkle And Fade, you now did because of this song off their CD So Much For The Afterglow.

#07. Learning How To Smile - I don't remember this song being a hit. But it is another kind of pop song from them. It is not as good as Wonderful in my opinion. Both these songs can be found off of their CD Songs From An American Movie, Vol. One: Learning How To Smile, which is their most pop sounding CD.

#08. Strawberry - This song was a small hit. It is a slower song, but I like it and the acoustic guitar that you can hear throughout the whold thing. I like the words to this song and how well they go with the music.

#09. Local God - This song was a hit in Austraila. I am not sure if it was here in the U.S.A. But it sure sounds like it was, because it is a great sounding rock song and sounds like a big hit. This is the first b-side off this CD. It was originally on the Romeo And Juliet soundtrack. If it wasn't a big hit, then that is because it is a off a soundtrack and wasn't promoted right. This is a favorite Everclear song of mine.

#10. Summerland - This is another hit, not a big one or small one though. In the booklet for this CD Art Alexakis says about this song: Hands down... my favorite Everclear song of all time. This is a slow rock song. Not a favorite of mine, but I like it some.

#11. Fire Maple Song - This was not a hit. But if it was, it would have been their first one. This is the only song on this compilation CD off their first CD World Of Noise. This song is alright. It is growing on me. It is another slower rock song. I wish they included another song or two from their first CD on this compilation than some others included on here.

#12. When It All Goes Wrong Again - This is their first hit off of their CD Songs From An American Movie, Vol. Two: Good Time For A Bad Attitude, which is the more rocking of the two Songs From American Movie CDs. This is another rock song. I prefer their song Rock Star over this one. Both songs are on Good Time For A Bad Attitude.

#13. Father Of Mine (Radio Mix) - Father Of Mine was another huge hit from Everclear. This is the radio mix version, so if you have So Much For The Afterglow, this version may sound a little different to you. But it still sounds good. This is Art Alexakis's favorite version of this song. This is Everclear song has touched and helped more people than any other.

#14. The Boys Are Back In Town - This song was originally a hit off of the Detroit Rock City soundtrack. It is a cover of an old Thin Lizzy song. This is a good rock song. This song is the second b-side off of this CD. I like this song better than their cover of Brown Eyed Girl.

#15. Heroin Girl - This is a rock great song. This was a big hit and another one of my favorite Everclear songs. This is the fastest song off of this CD. It has great music and the lyrics are really cool. I love listening to this song. It is cool.

#16. Brown Eyed Girl - This is another hit song. This is a slow rock song. But that should be obvious since it is a cover of the Van Morrison classic. This is a good cover, but I prefer The Boys Are Back In Town over this one. But this is still good.

#17. Sex With A Movie Star (The Good Witch Gone Bad) - This is the first previously unreleased song off of this CD. This is a good rock song. It is not that hard but not that soft either. I like the words and the music to it.

#18. The New Disease - This is the second previosly unreleased song off of this CD. This is a good rock song. I am not sure if this song or Sex With A Movie Star (The Good Witch Gone Bad) were hits or not. I am not sure which one I like better. They are both good songs. I am glad that they are on here.

#19. The New York Times - This song is about hoping there is love and compassion in this post 9/11 world. 9/11 plus something tragic that happened to a poor soul in Everclear's hometown of Portland Oregon inspired Art Alexakis to write this. He wrote this hoping the world would stop hating and fearing, and start loving and being compassionate. This is a slow moving rock song. A definiate inclusion on this CD. I like this good hit song too.

#20. Song From An American Movie Pt. 1 - If any song doesn't deserve to be on this CD, it is this one. This is just a soft nice intro to a previous CD of theirs. They should have taken this song off and replaced it with the song One Hit Wonder off the CD So Much For The Afterglow. That would have been better.

#21. Rock Star - This is of course a rock song. I like this song a lot. It has great music and some cool lyrics that got misinterpreted by a lot of fans of the band. This is another hit song. This is a great way to end the CD. This is another favorite Everclear song of mine. It is a song I am sure you will like too. It is a loud fast and just excellent song of theirs.

So there you have it. 21 great songs from a great band. I am glad I got this CD. I recommend it to anyone, even if you don't like the band or already have all of their other CDs. Pick it up.

It is too bad though that Everclear is just done to one member now, Art Alexakis. But he promises another Everclear album later this year. I hope he makes a great one with some great musicians. Everclear is a good band and I hope they live on and on.

Just go out and pick up this CD and enjoy it as much as I do.

Where has Leonard Cohen been for the past nine years? The legendary songwriter's mostly been in a Zen monastery, it turns out, obsessively rewriting and polishing the oblique, lapidary lyrics for this austere collection. Ten New Songs is arguably Sharon Robinson's record as much as Cohen's--she cowrote all the songs, plays most of the instruments (primarily a synth that seems to have freshly emerged from a chintzy 1984 power ballad), and accompanies Cohen's gloomy croak with her own crooning. This is the most subdued album Cohen's ever made, which is saying something. It's as if he no longer has time for anything in music or performance that could alter the meaning and force of his words. --Douglas Wolk

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A new Leonard Cohen fan........2007-03-27

Don't know how I missed Leonard Cohen in the 60's, but I am a fan now. These new recordings are fabulous.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome back, Mr. Cohen...........2007-03-11

This was Leonard Cohen's first album in 9 years after a stay in a Zen monastery. It feels like he's never been away. This is another great work by Mr. Cohen, sad, depressing, uplifiting, haunting, and moving. Some have complained about the spare instrumentation (mostly a synclavier/computer performed by Sharon Robinson, who co-wrote all the songs here with Leonard), but I think it works very well. It's simple and straightforward, and it really enhances the sad, Scotch drenched lyrics. A Thousand Kisses Deep is my favorite here, along with Alexandra Leaving (a great title to a great song), and By the Rivers Dark. This isn't my favorite Cohen album (that's The Future), but this is probably the 2nd most played album in my Cohen collection. I hope that Mr. Cohen doesn't go away for 9 years again. Everyone missed him. But it's amazing that despite the fact he was gone for so long, he didn't miss a beat.

4 out of 5 stars Take a Walk Down "Boogie Street" with Mr. Cohen.......2007-02-22

Hearing the throaty "Everybody Knows" in the movie "Pump up the Volume" (1990) had me envisioning an aged black man with deep wrinkles in his face, but the baritone voice belonged to Leonard Cohen: white, descended from Polish ancestry, and born into a Jewish middle-class family in Montreal, Canada.

"Songs of Leonard Cohen" (1968), Cohen's first, was produced after becoming an accomplished poet and novelist. Generally the singer has received greater attention in Canada and Europe than the good ol' U.S.A. Listen to any older album prior to 1984 with the exception of "Death of a Ladies' Man" (1977) and one hears soul-bearing songs - dirges in the vein of open wrists and blood dribbling married to the sound of pure, simple instruments. However, the prosaically named album, "Ten New Songs" (2001), has a tinge of the hopeful but also continues the synthetic mood music begun by Cohen's 1984 album, "Various Positions." The slight upbeat in lyrics can be attributed to a lifelong depression recently leaving (in an interview Cohen says he read the brain loses its anxieties as it grows older and cites this as a possible reason for his depression lifting).

Sharon Robinson (co-author of "Everybody Knows") appeared as a back-up singer on past albums and is by Cohen's side again as a back-up singer, co-writer, producer and arranger (probably left something out). Robinson actually shares the album's cover photo with Cohen. One may begin to wonder why her name is not besides Cohen's on the album's title since her input is apparently quite significant (Cohen's vision forms the album). She croons the title refrain, "In My Secret Life," several times on the opening track just before handing over the meat of the lyrics: "I saw you this morning./ You were moving so fast./ Can't seem to loosen my grip/ On the past./ And I miss you so much./ There's no one in sight./ And we're still making love/ In My Secret Life." Cohen's signature melancholy is still evident. "I'm turning tricks, I'm getting fixed,/ I'm back on Boogie Street" ("A Thousand Kisses Deep"). "You Have Loved Enough" proves true love is present and thriving among the darkness. "That I am not the one who loves - It's love that seizes me./ When hatred with his package comes,/ You forbid delivery./ And when the hunger for your touch/ Rises from the hunger,/ You whisper, 'You have loved enough,/ Now let me be the Lover.'"

The glaring deficit of "Ten New Songs" is the music or more appropriately called muzak. Often, only humdrum sounds accompany the adept lyrics. Randomly pick a track and chances are the same artificial drumbeat along with an electronic keyboard mix that sounds awfully close to what one can produce with a couple hits of a home keyboard and its repeat button will be heard. Serious flaws that would have crippled most albums, but Cohen's impeccable delivery and polished poetic lyrics make the trip down "Boogie Street" irresistible.

3 out of 5 stars A Lackluster Performance.......2007-01-29

This CD is about on par with Dear Heather, except it is more somber and dirge-like. It could use at least one song with an upbeat tempo, and the heavy use of synthetic sound gives it a sterile feeling. I long to hear a new Cohen CD where his guitar is the central instrument again and there is actually a live band backing him up. The songs worth repeat listening are: "A Thousand Kisses Deep," "In My Secret Life," "Alexandra Leaving," and "The Land of Plenty." The lyrics, in typically Cohen fashion, are pretty good for songs, but not quite poetry, however the music is just slow, depressing and dark, like a clock winding down.

An extraordinary compilation of Cohen's particular brand of lyricism - both musical and poetical - honed and mellowed by longer life experience . The arrangements are elegant and the production excellent - I love everything about this album.
