5 out of 5 stars Genius! (again).......2006-10-07

I admit it: I am one of those people who think that Don Van Vliet is a genius and that Trout Mask Replica and Lick My Decals Off, Baby are his masterpieces (though Clear Spot, Doc, and others are way up there, too!).

This, however, is a very good album, and in some ways it shows a more mature form of his genius. This version of the Magic Band were all big fans of Don's music and they worked very hard and did it justice. Not that the previous bands did not, or were not as good (a good argument can be made that the Lick band were the very best of all), just that this album and Doc have a special energy to the playing and arrangements.

So what can I say? You either love Don (Don Van Vliet, aka Captain Beefheart, for that .1% out there that might not know Beefheart but might be considering the purchase of this fine long player) or you hate him.

Most people hate him; especially women. Most people say this sounds like a horrible noise, not even music. If you want to end a party and drive people out of the house, put this on.

Be prepared, though, for that one guy who loves Beefheart, and says "Hey man! That's awesome! Now that everyone is gone, how about putting on "Doc at the Radar Station" or "Trout Mask Replica"?"

This is a very good album by a true musical genius. I think a hundred years from now this album will be studied in University Music Dept.'s, much the way Stravinsky is studied today.

This is not Don and the MB's best album, but it has a certain sound that may be more accessible to a new listener than his best albums, "Trout" and "Lick". It is pretty ugly music, as Beefheart himself acknowledged; yet also quite beautiful in its own way, like the way a spider or bat can be seen as beautiful.

I will say this, however, to the true fans: By hook or by crook, whatever it takes get your hands on the original mix of this album, the one produced by Zappa, and issued as a 2fer with the MONO Safe As Milk. It is totally studio quality and better - yes, BETTER! - than the released version! It may be the best album Don did after "Clear Spot".

p.s. "Clear Spot" is a great introduction (Beefheart 101) to the music of Beefheart. It is "rock and roll Beefheart" or "rhythm and blues" Beefheart, and is his single most accessible great album, and if you like that you might then move to "Spotlight Kid" (actually there used to be a 2fer available of the 2), then on to something like Doc at the Radar Station or Lick My Decals Off, Baby.

p.p.s. "We all drink from the same pond." - D.V.V.

5 out of 5 stars I sometimes pity them what come before..........2006-06-23

Because dear reader, many young folks don't get the experience or exposure some of us more veteran listeners have had (though it's not JUST young folks).

Captain Beefheart can be a difficult listen for those NOT inculcated with the noisiness of REAL instruments being played with various kinds of slides through REAL amplifiers. And, it can be a troublesome divergence from what is usually called "recording artists" for the average listener to wrap their heads around - HOWEVER, this is part of what makes a slice of Captain Beefheart so worthwhile.
Beefheart sounds sorta like Howlin' Wolf - who no doubt inspired him. I'm sure no one told young Don that he had a great voice and should sing for a living.

This is part of what is so surprising and exciting about individuals who make music. PLUS if you go on Youtube and find some of the interview clips of DVV you might hear him say some bizarro things that are almost a kind of artistic performance in and of themselves.

Getting to know Beefheart is kind of like delving into rural cheeses made in barns by country folk. It's like driving the extra mile to taste home made chocolate - or, like shutting off MTV and corporate radio in order to take up studied listening of independent music makers...
OK, that was heavy handed but you get the point.

THIS album is sort of the culmination of the motown funky bluesy work that they had been working toward for a decade.
I still prefer Clear Spot for the rawness of the guitars - but this record is easily more accessible.

I feel badly because I've often started friends off with Safe As Milk, or Trout Mask Replica KNOWING full well that it would turn them off from ever becoming a Beefheart fan, but I did't care I love that stuff.

start your friends here. Especially those who might-could be ready for a taste of that rural gouyere.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-own Classic.......2005-08-13

This seminal work never goes out of print. Works such as SB and BCP have influenced such disparate groups and styles as The Clash, Talking Heads, Devo, and The Dumptrucks ( Fat Clone Family ). Along with his Magic Band, Beefheart produced some of the most original music of the Sixties and Seventies.

5 out of 5 stars The triumphant return of bat chain puller.......2005-02-27

I'm quite familiar with the work of the captain, and have every album aside from the commercial follies unconditionally guaranteed and bluejeans and moonbeams. While I would say that every other beefheart album is at least as strong as most other things I've heard, this album in particular seems to have the most redeeming qualities. It is, as other reviewers have pointed out, a highly listenable album (with very warm production), and is simultaneously quite an outing in terms of the uniqueness of songwriting and musicianship involved. While not quite as cacophonous as say Trout Mask Replica or Lick my Decals off, Baby; the album is no less adventurous and refreshing. In spite of the unique/experimental nature of the album, there is nevertheless a catchiness and almost dancable quality to many of the songs. The rhythms (with added marimba) are almost buoyant: This is an incredibly happy and uplifting album, in spite of some of the dire ecological warnings; the album also contains what I would call some of the captains' best love songs. All in all, this is possibly Captain Beefhearts' best attempt at combining unique and artistic song-writing with joyful listenability.

5 out of 5 stars Tropical Hotdog Payday.......2004-12-08

You need this album! Buy it now! Click on that little thing that drops it in your cart. I know it's an import. I know it's twenty bucks. But buy it anyway, you cheap [...]

What do you get? The Captain's tightest ensemble since the original Magic Band. An original sound: for the first time in years, the Captain sound enthused about making music again. He's done going commercial, and he's done being weird for it's own sake. On this album, he breaks out the tequila. The album's marked by a horn section, of all things, and a great one at that. "Tropical Hot Dog Night" is one of my fav songs by the Captain, maybe the best. It manages to be leering, hilarious, and partying all at once. Owe'd to Alex is one of the world's all time great driving songs, with a gritty, driving backing to Don's spoken word vocals, and a memorable horn line. Speaking of spoken word, Apes-Ma is probably his best: short and gripping, and comes off as completely improvised (though it isn't of course). There are instrumentals, too: Ice Rose is, again, one of his greatest. The album is marked by a warm, clean sound, bright and smelling of sunsets. On the whole, it's remarkably free of the blues stomp which typifies so much of his work. Floppy Boot Stomp is an obvious exception, and is an excellent example of that style. Of the Capn's Final Three (along with Doc at the Radar Station and Ice Cream for Crow), this is by far the best. A real sampler of Don's many moods, as well as a real advance in terms of his sound. Must have, at any price.

Album Details

2006 Issued Digitally Remastered Edition of Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band's Return to Recording in 1978 for the Virgin Label (And Warner Bros in the Us Only for this Album in this Phase of his Career). The Songs were First Put to Tape under Its Original Title "Bat Chain Puller" in 1974, but Due to Typically Complex Beefheart Legal and Personal Reasons Only Saw the Light of Day with "Shiny" Added to the Title and after Re-recording the Whole Thing. It is the Bridge Between the Accessible Sound of "Clear Spot" and the Bizarre Looseness of "Doc at the Radar Station". Van Vliet's Humour and Wit was in Full Force on "You Know You're a Man", "Owed T'alex" and "Tropical Hot Dog Night". Unlike Anything You've Ever Heard Before and Are Likely Ever to Hear!

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 Stars really: some real BEEF here!.......2007-04-14

The dear old Captain returns to idiosyncratic form here. Odd stylings, off-kilter tempos & surreal subject matter all coalesce again after DVV's dreadful "commercial period" of Unconditionally Guaranteed and Blue Jeans & Moonbeams. But this album teeters a bit as the Captain regains his sea-legs. The first three tracks, "Tropical Hotdog Night", "Ice Rose" and "Harry Irene" all sound a bit schmaltzy, DVV's sentiment still gets in the way of artfully rockin' out like he was still obviously most able. By the time "Bat Chain Puller" ominously roars out of your speakers, the OLD CAPTAIN NOW SAILS GLORIOUSLY and somewhat chaotically over the bounding riffs. Beefheart is best taken all gruff and oddly time signatured. While the Captain himself exhorts his artistry of word-smithing about the oddness of the everyday. "Candles Mambo" sputters a bit again but "Love LIes", "Suction Prints" and "Apes Ma" are all rock & roll channeled thru Beefheartian insensibilities and churned out as PURE WEIRD ROCK. Fans of Beefheart will not be disappointed by this or the dastardly awesome albums to follow: DOC AT THE RADAT STATION and ICE CREAM FOR CROW. Albums upon which Beefheart raised the seas with mighty art rock and sailed like a mythic hero out of the music biz and into the stuff of rock legends.
