really good rock and roll.......2007-07-11

So far, I've only heard a couple songs from this underrated Private Eyes album, and I can honestly say I'm *already* a fan of Tommy Bolin's guitar style. He rocks hard, and most of the time his guitar playing is really good and melodic, and I'm sure when I finally get around to listening to one of his albums the entire way through, I will be mightily impressed. I do know the Come Taste the Band album very well, having owned it for about three years now. Some of the guitar tricks from that album have understandably found their way onto this one.

Anyway, the two songs I know already are "Bustin' Out For Rosey" (featuring a funky rhythm and a chorus that reminds me of the Bee Gee's) and "You Told Me That You Loved Me" which finishes off nicely with a couple minutes of solid guitar jamming. I like what I know so far.

Classic.......2007-06-02

This is one of the mellower Tommy Bolin albums, it is a must have for anyone building a 70's music archive who is off the beaten path, along with it's contemporary solo release, Teaser.

Tommy bolin was an influence and contemporary of Jeff Beck during his Jazz Fusion years. Other reviewers provide excellent history on tommy bolin.

If you enjoy this music and want to find some excellent modern guitar try some Warren Haynes with Gov't Mule (high and mighty). Mule's music does not have Bolin's fusion side, but does provide contemporary quality guitar rock.

The BEST guitarist of 1970's.......2006-01-18

Tommy Bolin seems to have been relegated to being a footnote in rock history, and this CD offers a small glimpse at the total injustice of his lack of recognition. Joe Walsh hand picked Tommy to replace him in The James Gang. Tommy replaced Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple. Tommy did jazz fusion work that Jeff Beck can only dream of and aspire to. But I digress. One of the best qualities about Tommy Bolin is that he never considered himself restricted to one style. You get calypso, hard rock, accoustic ballads, and more all on one disc. Even more amazing is that it's all GREAT. Best of all, this is the kind of disc that parents and kids can enjoy together without neccessarily getting all "7th Heaven". You owe it to yourself to own "Private Eyes" and "Teaser".

Very Underrated.......2006-01-10

Tommy Bolin, ask anyone in the world who this is and you probably won't get an answer. I've come to find that Bolin is one of the most talented underrated guitar players out there. This guy is nothing short of amazing. His songs are catchy, his guitar playing is in the same league with Jimmy Page. He sings with a very sensual voice that works quite well. His lyrics aren't bad either. Here's the tracks:

1. Bustin' Out for Rosey-5/5-Very good guitar solo.
2. Sweet Burgundy-5/5-Bolin sings in a very sensual voice; The guitar is amazing.
3. Post Toastee-5/5-Probably the best song on the album. The title (and the song itself) refer to how his friend o'ded on heroin, which he himself would later do.
4. Shake the Devil-5/5-More great guitar.
5. Gypsy Soul-5/5-This song's music goes perfect with the title & lyrics.
6. Someday Will Bring Our Love Home-5/5-(No Comment)
7. Hello, Again-5/5-Could easily be called a beautiful song.
8. You Told Me That You Loved Me-5/5-Kind of jazzy. Really good though.

Learn your Bolin.......2005-10-23

Tommy Bolin was one of the greatest guitar players you have never heard of. From the guitar based soulful "Bustin' out for Rosey, to the rockin' "Post Toastee", to the bluesy "You told me that you love me". This is a quality recording that should be in every '70,s rockers collection.

Rock n' roll with rocking soul.......2006-01-12

The BMG 2004 reissue of "Private Eyes" brings out the sharpness in what is already one of Hall and Oates' most important albums. There's not a clunker in any of the 11 original songs and two remixes, from the title track to the 12-inch version of "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)."

The sound reproduction, cleaner than either the original RCA CD or 1996 BMG reissue, also lets listeners hear how the duo tried to balance technology and sound effects with live instrumentation, never letting one take over the other. Even when the song is almost all computer and synth -- "I Can't Go For That" -- it's done with such balance that it still sounds perfect a quarter century later. You can hear Daryl and John coming into their own as songwriters and producers.

The reissue also gives the band's fans a chance to hear lost gems sounding better than ever -- especially "Looking For a Good Sign" and "Unguarded Minute." They can also debate the merits of the original "Your Imagination" version vs. its 12-inch remix. While the pounding, heavily-electronic remix was the basis for the single and MTV versions of the song, the album mix (with its acoustic drums and cymbals) wins out on sheer quality.

Also dig Ken Sharp's liner notes, which give listeners an interesting window into the duo's working dynamic, especially from Neil Kernon, their co-producer here and on "H2O."

It's hard to improve on a classic, but BMG does so here.

Been wondering about the U.S. remasters vs. the expensive Japanese K2 RM's?.......2005-08-06

Well, here's your answer: The Japanese win. Hands down. Big time.

To start off, I compared the album tracks of the 2004 U.S. remastered versions of VOICES, H20 & BIG BAM BOOM against the limited edition, Japanese, K2 remastered, album mini-LP-sleeve replication versions of the same titles. Then I compared the bonus track remixes on each U.S. remaster to their counterparts on the Japanese-only 12-INCH COLLECTION, VOLUMES 1 & 2.

The comparisons were performed using two Sony XA7 decks run via identical Acoustic Zen coax cables to a Camelot Uther DAC. Those of you who know your gear know that this is about as good as it gets under $25,000.

I cannot attest if the difference between the two remastering results are a result of:

1.) The K2 process being more robust than whatever mastering equipment was used (at Sony Studios in NYC) for the U.S. versions
2.) Whether the Japanese utilized source material closer to the original masters than the U.S. versions, or
3.) If the Japanese engineering was just better, or they took more time & care, than their U.S. counterparts.

Whatever the case may be, the K2 albums, and the two Japanese remix Collections, blow the U.S. versions out of the building. There is more of everything: More gain, bigger soundstage, more definition and, oh yeah, baby, more bottom end. The remixes on the U.S. versions are adequate; on the Japanese COLLECTION CD's, they THUNDER.

The three U.S. titles have nine additional remix tracks. All of these tracks appear on the two Japanese COLLECTION titles. All of the sonic accolades I attributed to the individual K2 album remasters apply to these two CDs also.

The bottom line? If you're a fan of the band, you have the cash and some above-average gear, the K2's and the dual-remix CD's are the ticket. While the entire RCA H&O catalog is available on the limited edition K2's (with the nice mini-LP sleeves), there would be some serious moolah required to acquire the full set. I consider the 3 titles mentioned here to be their best overall work from that period, so I opted for just those.

I'm currently piling thru all of the "Hits" packages from recent years to determine which has the best audio. It will be interesting to run the 2004 "Ultimate" set against the new "Essential" package.

Best Album from the Dynamic Duo!.......2004-08-19

This album just pips Voices to the top spot of my fav Hall & Oates' albums. Why? It sounds more consistent overall although Voices has some superior individual songs.

Side One of the original LP (till Did It In A Minute) consists of the stronger hit material while Side Two has the more experimental tunes. Still, the quality never drops and in Unguarded Minute and Your Imagination, the duo has a couple of excellent overlooked gems. The original album when it first came out challenged me to accept a different Hall & Oates, notably in I Can't Go For That, with its weird mix of soul, rock and Indian vocal stylings (No-oh-oh)! But it grew on me and has now become my favourite Hall & Oates song of all time!

The bonus tracks on this CD are interesting to listen to (altho' not essential) and together with the liner notes and remastered sound, makes this purchase a no-brainer. Now if only BMG would consider releasing Rock 'N Soul Part 1 with the extended versions of Say It Isn't So and Adult Education!

Only For Private Ears..........2004-07-24

People over the world, alle teenagers over the world; DON'T LISTEN TO THIS ALBUM ... IF ... you're a today's music fan and love all the trash that's coming to you via radio and tv stations. Go on with your life and stay away from this one because you'll never understand this album.
Ik vividly can remember the day I heard I Can't Go For That (No Can Do) for the first time. Good soul music and it was from WHITE guys. Private Eyes sounds like Kiss On My List part 2 and that's a good thing. This album was everything the world expected to be after Voices (1980 album from Hall & Oates). All the songs are very good and uplifting the album to a very clear state. The songs are crisply remastered and sound better than the first CD release. My personal favourites; Did It In A Minute, Private Eyes, I Can't Go For That (No Can Do) and Looking For A Good Sign. But the rest of the songs are following directly. What a top class album. Highly recommendend for music fans.

A classic remastered--and it's about time!.......2004-05-23

This album is one of H&O's best, with smooth Motown harmonies and lots of bracing G.E. Smith guitar licks. The (long-overdue) remastering job makes the sound sparkle. Though the bonus tracks (12" remixes) are forgettable and dispensible, "Private Eyes" is the duo's best album.

There was a time, back in the 1980's especially when there was a universal blackout on "the funk" - - by that I mean that most of the funkiest recordings of the '70s (including those of JB, Funkadelic and countless others) were not only long out of print, but obscure, collectible, or if you were lucky, flea market junk. During that time though there was one source you could rely upon if you REALLY needed a dose of funky movement... THE BLACK ACTION MOVIES OF THE SEVENTIES (many still out on video.) At that time though, the odds of ever getting your hands on those super funky soundtracks (with the exception of SHAFT) seemed quite rare.

JUMP AHEAD almost 20 years later... and today - - they are back. Many of the soundtracks, even to the more obscure films are back and on sale... but where to start ? Well, this CD is a nice place to wet your palet... and get a taste before you dig deeper. - - As an added bonus you will come to rediscover WILLIE HUTCH - - today, somewhat obscure and forgotten... yet a great 70s soul singer who recorded two of the best of the '70s soundtracks THE MAC and FOXY BROWN.

Incidentally, although this compilation is by no means exhaustive (I'd call it a "nice intro" at best) its great to see the inclusion of MAKE A RESOLUTION from the movie THREE THE HARD WAY - - score by the IMPRESSIONS - - Grab this film if you can ever find a copy. It features Jim Kelly, Jim Brown and Fred Williamson as a super black action hero trio out to stop a white supremecist group from poisining the water with a chemical that only effects black people... with an in studio appearence by the Impressions... as well as a rather kinky black, white and Chinese motorbiker trio who know how to get the truth from men (!)

Though today, there may be people who consider this genre Politically Incorrect (*there are legitimate arguements both ways) the truth is that these films, if anything documented some of the great music and fashions of the era. That is why I love them, and that is why I love the soundtracks, which incidentally like the exagerated black slang and exagerated size afros were also exageratedly funky - - something by all means GOOD !

Can you dig it?.......2004-06-04

This is a compilation album featuring songs from '70s blaxploitation movies. It feature ten funky songs from such cinematic "masterpieces" as Trouble Man, The Mack and Foxy Brown. The songs are performed by soul legends like The Impressions, The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Issac Hayes and Curtis Mayfield. (There are also two songs by the obscure Willie Hutch.) This is a fun compilation, and fans of '70s soul should dig it.

I haven't been excited over a compilation in a while, not since the "Babies Makin Babies" by ?estlove. Anyway, good compilation with great songs, you can even feel the groove on "Make a Resolution."

I listened with at least moist eyes - and often streaming tears - to this stunning collection as I enjoyed a scenic ride on Amtrak from Seattle, WA to Portland, OR. I could not help but be proud and grateful for our most honorable country and the dedication and sacrifice of the people who volunteer to protect and defend her. I bought 15 copies and gave them to my friends and family. I intend to give copies to my best clients. Needless to say, I commend A Hero for Today to all.

Hero For Today.......2006-07-05

I heard the title song first at the memorial marker ceramony for Paul R. Smith, the first Medal of Honor recipient of the WOT. I went searching for a CD and to my surprise, found it as the title.

Unlike some of the other reviewers, I have found the tone quality very good. My only 'complaint' is the lack of printed lyrics.

While I'm not usually a huge fan of military music, I found the lyrics time appropriate for occassional use in my social studies classes. While we have many discussions about the US policies, many of us can use a reminder of those few that are giving up so much for the many.

This CD is awesome!.......2005-08-15

I bought the CD for my mom who LOVES "We Were There". The 3rd infantry performs a great rendition of it during their concert series every year on the Ellipse in Washington D.C. which includes soldiers wearing the uniforms of the Army as they have evolved and a very stirring speech. Since the 3rd infantry is unable to sell recordings to the public, being able to at least get the song feor my mom was a wonderful present. The other music on the CD was also wonderfully patriotic and beautifully performed.

More Patriotic Dribble!.......2005-08-06

Another re-hash of Altissimo! recordings here. Once again recordings have been drawn together from the US Army Band Library which means the sound quality is often un-even, and nothing is original here.

The standard US Armed Forces Medley Altissimo! just uses from one CD to the next. I don't think they ever change the band playing it! So no mention of when these recordings were made either, or who was directing the Army band when they were done. Altissimo! has not reached that level of professionalism that other labels attained long ago.

Most of the patriotic material here has been issued before by Altissimo! There is very little new material on this CD. The redundant program presented here is a common feature with most US service bands. The musicianship is first-rate: The music they play often second or third rate! These bands can do a lot more than play this kind of dribble. Of course Altissimo! thinks that only the popular stuff will sell. And so they market the same thing over and over.

The picture on the front with the US soldier in desert tans is intended to pull in the patriotic buyer today. The funny thing here is that the recordings combined here were probably in the can pre-9/11! Buyer beware!

Terrific!.......2004-05-24

"Hero for Today" is a wonderfully balanced collection from the US Army Band and Chorus. There was a good selection of patriotic music, both old and new. The balance within the chorus was well executed, as was the balance between the band and the chorus. Their rendition of "Hymn to the Fallen" was thoughtful, almost prayerful, with a subtle choral overtone. The "Battle Hymn of the Republic" was a fresh and full arrangement of an old favorite. "Here's to America" was an upbeat expression of faith in America, in good contrast to the reflective "A Hero For Today." "This Is My Country" was set with a majestic tone, while "God Bless America" was an upbeat expression of an old favorite. I'd recommend this CD to anyone who would like to hear both traditional and new expressions of patriotic music.

You're gonna need a cardiologist after this tasty schmaltz attack on your senses by previously unreleased excerpts from the 1951-1966 Coca-Cola radio show. Mario Lanza's vibrant, satisfying tenor rings thrillingly, but lacks a necessary middle for many of these songs. Still, when the top opens, his sound is obsessively appealing as he scoops unabashedly to get your emotional adrenaline flowing. However, the descending line was not his friend. Rough diamond.......2001-08-23

My initial impression on hearing this CD was: fabulous voice; rough performances. That view is essentially unchanged. Lanza fans will adore the heroic singing and sheer bravado of these performances; purists will no doubt find much to criticize in Lanza's unrestrained delivery. In a sense, both sides are right, but there can be no mistaking that this is one of the most exceptional tenor voices on record. The upper register is dazzling and the middle and low registers are rich and satisfying. Lanza's breath control is second to none, and the evenness between his registers shows a technical expertise that is quite astonishing. If that wasn't enough, the singer's way with a song is unique - not a word is neglected as Lanza imparts each number with his trademark commitment and freshness. This is a voice to treasure.

Now the criticism: all of the performances contained here come from Lanza's wildly erratic Coca-Cola Radio Show of 1951-52. To be sure, these weekly performances yielded some amazing results, but sadly only a handful of these are to be found on this disk. (For a much more consistent "Coke" CD, check out the excellent When Day is Done.) The real reason for the inconsistency in performance was lack of time, and often Lanza was not sufficiently familiar with the material. The arrangements certainly didn't help, with the emphasis on big endings and impossibly high keys. Having said that, I doubt that any other tenor in similar circumstances could have produced as many dazzling performances as Lanza achieved.

Duds first: Diane is a dreadful rendition, and let's hope it never resurfaces on any other compendiums. The Neapolitan songs are rough - very rough in the case of Santa Lucia Luntana and Canta Pe Me - and vastly superior performances (and arrangements) of these and others can be found on Lanza's magnificent Mario! Lanza At His Best CD. O Paradiso is a decidedly inferior effort (especially compared to the tenor's rendition in the 1955 movie Serenade) and suffers from appalling orchestral accompaniment. The two songs from The Student Prince (Serenade and Deep in My Heart) suffer badly in comparison with Lanza's magnificent soundtrack, recorded the same year. Here both performances are rushed and unpolished, with a totally unneccesary "scream" on the word "dream" at the conclusion of Deep in My Heart. You'll Never Walk Alone is a ho-hum effort, and there is a far better take of this number to be found on the CD of the same title.

For my money, the CD's strengths are the magnificent Addio Alla Madre (a performance that rivals Lanza's celebrated 1950 recording and has an on-key ending this time!); a sensitive rendition of O Tu Che In Seno Agli Angeli (surely one of the most difficult arias in the repertoire); the beautifully realized Your Eyes Have Told Me So; a cheeky and exciting La Danza; and a far more delicate reading of Parmi Veder Le Lagrime than his 1950 commercial rendition.

The sound is extremely bright (sometimes excessively so) at the expense of Lanza's mellow timbre, but there is a real sense of presence throughout. As one Lanza admirer remarked on first hearing this disk: "This is a fantasy voice." And indeed it is. Buy this disk for its highlights and revel in the tenor's exuberant genius.

Don't Forget Me? How could we Mario?.......2000-06-03

Lyndsay Perigo is spot on. This is the finest compact disc of Lanza's to date. The finest sound quality yet and boy what singing. Try if you dare, not to find "You Are Love" spine tingling and what about the sheer sensational neapolitan beauties. Let's not forget the wonderful arias on the albumn. Lanza had no vocal equal and probably never will. Listen to the disc, just once maybe and you will feel the same as many other fans of the greatest tenor voice EVER.

More Lanza Bonanza.......1999-08-16

The lady is right you will need a cordiologist, but not for the reasons she says. This is Mario Lanza in top flight, every track is a gem. Included on this Cd is a selection from the full Lanza repertoire, opera, operetta, musical comedy and popular songs of the day all sung to perfection as only Mario could sing them. For anyone who is a Lanza fan or for anyone who has only just heard of the Mario Lanza name, this is the Cd for you, but beware once you listen to this you will want them all.

The Great Mario.......1999-08-15

Barbara Eisner Bayer's review is pretentious nonsense. "No middle" for these songs & arias? Mario had a seamless transition from bottom to middle to top register, shown off to great advantage in these selections. Ms Bayer should have her hearing checked for mid-range frequencies. Lanza's performance of Addio Alla Madre on this CD is second to none.One could almost say the same for his 'Forza' recording. And was there ever singing more lush than Mario's Your Eyes Have Told Me So or Some Day I'll Find You? A problem with "descending" Ms Bayer? Listen to the conclusion to the latter, where Mario both descends & ascends with a facility & passion that reveal the moderns - the Three Tenors included - for the dead boring poseurs that they are. Thank goodness Mario Lanza is enjoying the renaissance that he is, so that we may be reminded of what glorious singing is really about, & once was.

Private Eyes for public ears.......2005-04-22

After 1979,Daryl Hall & John Oates were dropped from the Atlantic label and landed a contract with RCA. This is the second of five RCA albums. H&O put out one album a year on RCA from 1980 to 1984. Here on this album released in 1981,are the hits DID IT IN A MINUTE,YOUR IMAGINATION,I CAN'T GO FOR THAT and of course,the title track. The other songs are great.

In my opinion, in their top 5........2004-03-03

This was the album that started it all for me. I bought this in about, January 2003, yeah I know I got in really late. I loved Private Eyes the song for a long time, and was eventually driven to buy this. Private Eyes is of course, an unbelieveabley good song, but what really stood out for me was the ones I've never heard of before. Like Looking For a Good Sign, Head Above Water, and the biggest suprise of all, Did It In A Minute. I was stupified by how good the song was, everything in it, from the melody to the lyrics, are just perfect to me. The whole album is so good, it really is hard to describe.

Big Hit, Uneven Album.......2003-04-08

Hall and Oates were, first and foremost, a singles band whose studio albums were often of secondary importance. The one exception was 1980's "Voices," which contained several excellent tracks beyond the obvious hits. With 1981's "Private Eyes," however, it was back to business as usual. The title song was the biggest hit on this album and one of the duo's all time best. Up against ... contempraries such as Duran Duran and Culture Club, it was a breath of fresh air on the radio at the time.

"I Can't Go for That" was also a big hit, while "Did it in a Minute" and "Your Imagination" (deservedly) scored some airplay as well. Beyond that is mostly filler material recommended only for diehard H&O fans. It should also be noted that the CD for this album contains no CD booklet, only a single page that repeats the back cover.

Overall, an unveven period piece that has more than its fair share of decent singles.

Sound quality sinks this CD.......2003-01-24

This album is one of H&O's best, with smooth Motown harmonies and lots of bracing G.E. smith guitar licks. Unfortunately, the archaic mastering of the CD leaves the sound lifeless and listless. This album desperately needs remastering and only once that's done will it be worth buying. Meanwhile, hunt down a vinyl copy.

The Pinnacle of H&O.......2002-06-28

Private Eyes is the best H&O album. Is there any album from Hall and Oates that runs the gamut of emotions that this album does? From uplifting (Private Eyes, Looking for a Good Sign) to mysterious (I Can't Go For That) to tough (Mano a Mano) to uplifting (Did It In A Minute), and the whole album just carries you. The best way to describe what this album means to me is that, in a deepest moment of despair, I'm putting this CD on, and everything doesn't seem to be as bad as I thought. NOW THAT'S A SPECIAL ALBUM.

10 Stars! The Best H&O Album Ever has just got better!.......2005-11-12

This is by far the best H&O album ever where the whole album just flows along in a very cohesive manner and even the "weak" track "Some Men" isn't all that bad. I loved this album so much when I first got it, I memorized every single lyric and I still remember them years after. Everyone knows the hit singles like the title track and "I Can Go For That" but there are other gems like "Unguarded Minute" that should be in any best of compilation of the band. G.E. Smith, now of night time tv talk show fame, plays great guitar on this as well as the previous one and the future H&O albums up to "Oh Yeah". This version has been very well remastered and comes in a very artfully done mini-lp sleeve with both the English and Japanese lyrics included. For all the H&O and soul-rock fans out there, this is THE version of the album to get. Very highly recommended.
