Morningwood lead vocalist Chantal Claret endears herself as the self-proclaimed "Mae West of rock 'n' roll" (and scores bonus points for even knowing who West is), melding that welcome sense of sass and sex-tease with her band's anxious pop crunch to take the NYC club scene on a skittering trip back to its future on MW's full-length debut. It's futile to evoke pretensions of post-modernism for a band having this much salacious fun pumping up the hilarious urgency of the showstopper "Take Off Your Clothes" or giddily blasting Madonna's moribund club beats with bracing doses of decades-spanning punk energy on the bounding single "Nth Degree." Producer Gil Norton (Pixies, Foo Fighters) imparts a sense of accomplished abandon to the songs of Claret and bassist/fellow band mainstay Pedro Yanowitz, from the scorching buzzsaw-pop of "Jetsetter" and "Easy" and moody nerve of "Body" and "Everybody Rules" to the disparate teases "Babysitter" and "New York Girls." The sex-charged energy of Claret's chamaeleonic vocals should make her instant rock goddess, but it's the whole vibrant package here that makes Morningwood so musically arousing. --Jerry McCulley

I truly have enjoyed this CD. Rockin' songs. Edgy, without being too harsh.

One of the most exciting bands I have heard in a long time. I was however disappointed that my cd was censored. I am 47 years old and do not appreciate having to listen to a bleep in the middle of a song! It is distracting and if I had been given a choice I would not have purchased this version.

This CD is a pure pop package of energy.
None of your Busted or Good Charlotte nonsense here, but a wonderful jump around the room LP.
Nth Degree caught my ear on MTV & the CD had to be mine!
For those of you who find the Donnas a bit too sleazy, this is a softer option, but it still rocks.

I don't usually like girl bands...........2006-10-05

but I like this one! This album is great to clean house to, it gets me up and going. I can listen to it over and over and never get tired of it. Girl bands are usually annoying to me, but I guess I like this one because it has more of the old school punkish feel to the music. While on some of the songs the lyrics are somewhat idiotic, (them spelling out their name in a song is kind of lame), but the music is addictive enough where I can forgive their silliness. Like I read from one other reviewer, I was surprised they bleeped a swear word in a song, but maybe they did that to be quirky or get your attention. Overall, this is one of the best girl albums I have ever bought.

Good But Thin.......2006-09-25

First, I'd say overall this is a good album. The songs are catchy and solid, but for some reason that I can't quite put my finger on, it's lacking something. I like the fun oversexed lyrics and themes. I like her voice, at times reminding me of Veruca Salt meets Le Tigre. Guitar riffs and tones are good. ... Check it out, but don't expect it to blow your mind or be an album you'll be savoring for years to come.

Fun and trashy.......2005-09-10

Morningwood has a fun, lewd sense of humor. That's obvious from their name. That fun, lewd sense of humor is also central to their musical identity. This is one group that doesn't believe punk rock has to be angry or dour. (Okay, punk-influenced if you want to get all technical about it.) Morningwood is aggressive and trashy, but this New York City-based group also has infectious melodies and a bit of glam, all of which is well-served by crisp, expert production from Gil Norton (who previously worked with Echo & the Bunnymen, The Pixies, and the Foo Fighters).

Comparisons to the Divinyls, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, and the Pretenders have been made, but you can also cite other bands like Concrete Blonde, Bikini Kill, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs--and that's just sticking to groups fronted by women. Fact is, this is a band that goes from sounding like Romeo Void on "Take Off Your Clothes" to the Pixies on "Body 21" to L7 on "Nu Rock." In other words, they've got a lot of different sounds to offer. In addition to the aforementioned, standout tracks include the fairly straight-ahead "Televisor," the very new wave "Nth Degree" (which spells out their name in the chorus, "Uh, oh, here we go, M-O-R-N-I-N-G-W-O-O-D"), and the bawdy "Babysitter." "Your daddy shouldn't let me babysit," goes the chorus. "You gotta start sometime; it may as well be now," Chantal Claret continues in the next verse.

This is all subjective, of course, and you never know what radio decisionmakers will do. But if Morningwood gets the airplay, they should have at least a minor hit on their hands.

Wood is good........2005-11-21

I saw these guys this week and they put on a good show. The sound is New York city punk/glam with a dash of pop and all fun. The girl on the mic had a ton of energy, really fronted the band well, and filled her t-shirt nicely. I could make band comparisons, but just know that they rock, and will get your body moving if you so choose. Too bad there is currently no US album out, but I heard it's on the way. Oh, and the track "New York Girls" and the cover of "Knock On Wood" are well worth this price.
