The most soothing sounds.......2006-02-20

I grew up listening to Zamfir's pan flute soothing music, then for the past 15 years, I've been away from it until I heard The Lonely Shepherd while watching Kill Bill. I was pleasantly surprised to find the CD at Amazon and bought it at once. Many of the other songs on this CD are good as well, but nothing beats The Lonely Shepherd.

I dont care for any of the other songs on the CD, but the "Lonely Shepherd" theme is very beautiful and sad. Zamfir was obviously deeply in love with the panpipes. Listen to his "Picnic at Hanging Rock" soundtrack and you'll know what I mean. I highly recommend this CD.

THis CD by Zamfir is out of this world. There is nothing better than "The Lonely Shepherd"... I haven't heard a better one than this. Just the type of soft instrumental one would like...very soothing.

I was once a punk rocker. I listened to the Sex Pistols, Ramones, Black Flag, and The Dead Kennedys. I have a string of gigs under my belt with various punk bands, a long list of one night stands with rocker chicks, and did enough drugs to make Keith Richards OD. All that changed the night I listened to Zamfir.

Alone in my apartment I played this CD while cleaning a puke staine off my carpet. I don't know whose it was, but I'd like to thank him because it led me to my new life. I have since thrown away my guitars, amps, and entire music collection. It is all garbage by comparison to this and in the trash is where it all belongs.

How can anyone listen to 'Summer of 42' and not fall to their knees by the sheer beauty of it? The Lonely Shepard title track brings tears to my eyes everytime I listen to it. It brings me to a magical place where no one gets arrested for shoplifting and everyone has peace in their hearts.

I cannot find a panflute at the music store, so I'm trying to make one out of PVC pipe and old bongs. I think I found the G, A, and D major chords, but can't quite find F. A silly straw with a slit in it can make a pretty decent B minor, but it stretches out after a couple of days.

All my friends have abandoned me and I haven't been with a woman in three months, but it is all worth it. I now happily skip through life with merriment in my heart. No more drugs for me, Zamfir is my natural high.

disapppointing choice.......2007-07-12

Great selection of beautiful songs--that's the plus. Too bad they are arrainged in such an abysmally slow tempo with every note drug out to the max that it's almost painful to listen to them. I'd think twice (or three times) before buying this CD unless you can preview it in advance and the tempo is to your liking.

There are 2 new CDs of Polygram, one this of Mr. Chacksfield, a wonderful orchestra with 2 LPs. 1 is inedit "Limelight", for the first time in CD. The other CD of Polygram is of Ronnie Aldrich, too 2 on 1. Both CDs are excellents! The sound is 5 stars for the 2 CDs.
The 4 LPs represents the golden years of the big orchestras and Decca/London.
If you love the GOOD sound, the GOOD orchestras and GOOD arragments, buy this two new CDs of Polygram.
(Note for Polygram personal: Vocalion a few weeks ago debuted with 2 CDs with the same material in each half of this compilations! Please, can somebody do a little look to the records in this world before reediting again the same LPS?).
There are MANY records (LPs) and hidden treasures waiting to see the format in CD. And Many collectors and fans of Phase 4 Stereo waiting NEW music.....

Aunque Vocalion presentó hace unas semanas "Beyond the sea" en otro doblete, tenemos acá "Limelight", un excelente LP, temas magníficos y espectacular sonido (degusten el Concierto de Varsovia y "Tonight"). Vale la pena comprar éste CD, al igual que el doble recién salido de Ronnie Aldrich (Soft & Wicked and Where the Love is).
Esperemos que al fin publiquen toda esta excelente música de los 60's y 70's, con arte original, toda de la era dorada de London/Decca y su sello Phase 4 Stereo.
Aprovechen, cómprenlo, está barato y obtienen una orquesta 1A, sonido mejor que cualquiera de las nuevas grabaciones DDD y música para colocarse los audífonos y disfrutar (Ojo, no es para colocar en el equipo y oírlo de fondo, no señor!).Esta música no se vuelve a escuchar.

WONDERFUL CELEBRATION OF LIGHT MUSIC FROM THE 50's.......2007-04-12

There was a time when orchestral light music was the staple fare of the airwaves with healthy record sales accompanying each release, particularly when the advent of the vinyl long-playing record enabled concept albums of romantic, Latin and many other imaginative themes to come up with a dozen of so tracks during the 50's and early `60's. Nowadays sidelined to film and television themes, the great conductors and their lush orchestrations have long disappeared but fortunately their recordings are now frequently available as CD collections in celebration of a once popular genre.

Frank Chacksfield was one of UK Decca's foremost talents and provided a steady diet of light music with the thirty melodies recaptured on this compilation typical of his lush stringy style. Looking back to 1952 when the Theme from the Chaplin film, LIMELIGHT sold a million copies, EBB TIDE quickly followed with both hitting high in the American Charts as well as in Britain. More hits followed like the catchy MEET MISTER CALLAGHAN and LITTLE RED MONKEY with the silver screen continuing to provide the impetus for popular Chacksfield recordings of A KID FOR TWO FARTHINGS, IN OLD LISBON, COCKLESHELL HEROES and LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDOURED THING.

Listening to this fine collection brought back many pleasant memories and it could be said the early tracks sound infinitely better than the scratchy 78's which these treasured tracks first surfaced.

Could be better.......2007-01-04

I ordered the CD in October and received it in a reasonable time, however the case was split. I immediately requested a replacement, and received it 5 WEEKS later. This one had many deep cracks. Both had been sent in a simple cardboard sleeve. I again requested a replacement and now in January still have not gotten one.

Limelight.......2006-01-14

Great album. R&b flavoured, with Colin doing more song writing than his earlier albums. The song writing is very strong. This guy is very talented and has a great voice. He refuses to be stuck in a musical rut. The guitar playing is very tastefull. Well aranged songs with excellent musicians.

Colin James Redefines "Alternative Rock"........2005-10-09

It's been more than six years since I have listened compulsively to Colin James and The Little Big Band 2, and after listening to Limelight, I think his music has matured and became more unique in style. It's no longer a jazz/swing album, but it's more of a mix of blues, rythem, roots and soft rock altogether. Colin James has written most of the songs in this album with several songs by Bob Dylan, Nick Lowe/William Bremner/David Edmunds/Terry Williams, and Van Morrison.

"Better Way To Heaven" is a fast "good time" song, and it's a good choice to start as the first track.

"Watchin' The River Flow" by Bob Dylan features good electric slide guitar played by Colin James. It's got a bit of country and rock mix feel to it.

"Limelight" is so far one of my favorites in this album. It's a very easy to listen ballad about love.

"Far Away Like A Radio" is the first single from this album, and I think the music video was very good, especially it makes Colin James very attractive. It's a song about the low life and a sinner.

"On My Way To You" is a slow ballad with some good meaningful lyrics.

"When I Write the Book" by NL/WB/DE/TW is the first track that I tend to want to sing along, because the music and lyrics are so catchy.

"Misplaced Heart" is another slow sad love song.

"Speakeasy" is a good fast song about a dreamer. I like the song, because it's about someone in Vancouver, and I can relate to it.

"Healing Time" is a rather slow and lazy sounding song, and it's my least favorite.

"Travellin'" is a fast and heavy on the drums and guitar song.

"Shadow of Love" is another favorite track of mine, because it's got good lyrics and sounds beautiful and sexy.

"It Fills You Up" is a Van Morrison song.

"Weeping Willow Tree" is very much a blues song with minimal use of musical instrument.

"Into The Mystic" is also by Van Morrison. What can I say, it's the perfect song to wrap up this album.

Endearing Collection of Montovani Film Music.......2006-09-28

This is a very good collection of Montovani film music. These recording are so soothing and pleasing to the ear. Most impressive are Montovani's versions of YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN and LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE is incredibly beautiful.

Movies and Mantovani Make Magnificent Musical Memories. .......2005-04-18

In this year in which fans celebrate Mantovani's 100th birthday, another excellent British compilation of some of the great maestro's original recordings has been released. The tracks on this CD come predominantly from Mantovani's 1957 bestselling LP, Film Encores, his 1959 Film Encores Volume 2, and his 1967 LP entitled "Mantovani/Hollywood." Up until now, the six tracks from the Hollywood LP have been the most difficult to find on CD in locations other than Japan, and it includes Monty's exciting arrangements of the themes from Zorba the Greek, the Magnficent Seven, Lawrence of Arabia, and You Only Live Twice. While these alone are worth the CD price, the remaining selections comprise the very best of Mantovani's film music library, including Unchained Melody (now better known as the theme from the movie "Ghost"), April Love, the theme from The Apartment, and Charlie Chaplin's Limelight. Attentive Mantovani fans will hear the inclusion of a less heard variation of the "golden hit" Moon River in which the maestro replaced the trumpet solo with the soprano sax in a later recording of this forever popular number. Sooner or later, and we hope sooner, everything recorded by the original orchestra led by the incomparable Mantovani will appear on CD. That is a just and fitting tribute to the most popular light orchestra leader in the 20th Century whose music will live on and will be heard to delight fans all over the world in the 21st.

The All-time Best Selling Mantovani LP is now on CD!.......2005-03-11

When the LP entitled Film Encores Volume I was released in stereo in 1957, Mantovani was already established as one of the world's best selling recording artists. Film Encores, however, became the maestro's most successful recording in the United States, reaching number one and remaining on the Billboard charts for two years. Now you can hear this phenomenal gold record in its entirety on CD and you will understand why it ranks #32 in the top 100 LPs of the 1950s. Many of these tracks have appeared on several CD compilations over the last few years, but songs like My Foolish Heart, Intermezzo, Laura, and Hi Lili Hi Lo are making their first appearance. Not for 'fair weather' fans, but an interesting retrospective..........2006-02-11

To all those who like to attach themselves to the Shania bandwagon then try to claim her 'talent' is entirely down to Mutt Lange I have this to say - You have obviously never attended one of her hugely successful live performances...

This album is typical of the late '80's pop-rock genre Shania gravitated towards on account of her early career whilst supporting her siblings after the death of their parents.

As a fan of, say, 'Foreigner' or 'Heart' I can safely say that Shanias performances here do not lack anything in comparison. Not forgetting either that these are by no means polished album tracks produced for general release, being only re-mixed demo tapes.

If you want a perfect example of how good her vocals are on this album, record yourself singing to a backing track in your bathroom at home to see how awfull this could have sounded - and just how much potential there was waiting to come through.

'Lost My Heart' and 'For The Love' are my personal favourites here and ably demonstrate her ability to belt out a good song with passion and committment.

Take no notice of the tinny quality of the music recording, concentrate instead on that amazing voice and be glad she had the grit and tenacity to pursue her dreams, thus providing us with the great vocal talent we came to appreciate - not to mention the pleasing aesthetic qualities she brings to our screens.

And take no notice of the poor reviews listed here - In my humble opinion there really hasn't been much thought employed therein.

Country Purists Beware (ah ain't no country purist).......2005-09-14

This is definitely NOT one of those discs where dreadful demos from a superstar's early days are dredged up and carelessly remixed to make a cheap buck. At least it doesn't sound that way. These are well-produced pop/rock (and a little dance) songs Ms. T. did in the late 1980s. The "packaging" is nice too, including terrific photos and good liner notes too (but see below). And even a slipcase. I like slipcases.

The red-state folks who need Shania to be strictly a "country" artist and turn a blind eye to her pretty-darn-good pop remixes probably won't be able to deal with this, as it could lead to dancing of the non-line variety. But us more "liberal" fans OK with our singers stretching sometimes will find much to enjoy here. Ironically, some of the crunchiest of these ("Wild and Wicked", "Hate To Love", "Luv Eyes") sound a bit like what producer/hubby "Mutt" Lange turns out with bad boys like Def Leppard. Go figure.

Early standouts for me, are "Lost My Heart", both mixes of "It's Alright", and "Bite My Lip." In "Lip", Eileen Shania tolerates...barely...unwelcome advances from the boss, then her boyfriend cancelling on their dinner date.

One fairly big omission in the liner notes: I caught 2 additional songs NOT written by Paul Sabu and Eileen Regina Lange. "For the Love" is a remake of the late Bobbi Martin's 1970 hit "For the Love of Him" and was written by Martin and Al Mortimer. "Half-Breed" (yes, the Cher song) was written by Al Capps and Mary Dean. Just trying to give credit where credit is due, that's me...

Nice surprise. Nice price. Recommended.

Great Stuff!.......2005-07-18

I bought this cd expecting it to be awful, but I actually really enjoy over half of the songs. It's nice to hear a more raw sounding Shania, and I think some of these songs really show how powerful her voice can be. So if your open to a different sound from a different time but with a familiar voice, than this cd is for you.

Dolphy first album I've heard and I love him thence. He plays on bass clarinet - Epistrophy, Hypochristmutreefuzz
flute -South street exit and You don't know what love is - maybe most beautiful flute solo I've ever heard
alto sax - The Madrig speak, the Panther walks and Miss Ann - both superb. Great music. Mix of bop and free jazz. Dolphy plays with unusual feeling and emotion.
Highly recommend.

Expressive and explosive album, with dutch rhythm section of Misha Mengelberg. Dolphy's last album (recorded june 2nd, 1964) before his death on june 29, 1964. Don't read, buy!
