5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Mahler Lieder Recitals.......2007-07-07

I've always had an affinity for the alto voice when it comes to Mahler's music. I find that altos are always able to bring this quality of tragedy to their singing that I don't really hear in many baritones. That said, I believe Thomas Hampson is an exception to the rule. I would say that he is much better than Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau for the reason that his singing doesn't quite sound so artificial. The voice has a haunting quality about it, and I don't think Thomas Hampson is an artist who is afraid to let his voice sound hollow for the sake of expressivity. Because of this, there is a sense of loss and abandon that I hear in this recital that I would normally hear in many a great Mahler alto. I still love Christa Ludwig and Dame Janet Baker in these songs, but Thomas Hampson sings Mahler's songs excellently and I would highly recommend this CD for anyone who wishes to hear an alternative to the usual alto cycle. In this CD, we get an exemplary Lieder Eines Fahrenden Gesellen, perhaps the best of them all. The Kindertotenlieder are sung with a haunting beauty that is further accentuated by Hampson's intelligence with the text. Listen to his "Wenn dein Mutterlein" and you will know what I mean. The Rückertlieder too, are one of the very greatest and you must listen to the last song, Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen, to understand how much tragedy and loss were Mahler's two greatest companions during his tragic life. Hampson is perhaps the greatest lieder singer alive today (in the baritone department), and how fortunate we are that we can hear this Mahler cycle recorded with one of its greatest exponents. Add to that Bernstein's natural feeling for Mahler's music and the fantastic playing of the Vienna Philharmonic and you have a recording which will stand the test of time as a classic.

5 out of 5 stars On The Kindertotenlieder Performance.......2007-02-23

First, let me say that I can not yet review the recording, I have only now ordered it. I can tell you about the performance, however. I had the good fortune of attending this live performance at the Musikverein in Vienna. I was also privileged to have been given one of Maestro Berstein's personal seats in the front row. This was in 1991, however, I have never forgotten the emotion that filled the room during and after this work was performed. It goes without saying that there was an enthusiastic standing ovation which wasn't surprising in view of the great love the orchestra and the people of Vienna felt for Bernstein. The fact there was hardly a dry eye in the audience gave testimony to the quality of the performance of the orchestra, Thomas Hampson and Maestro Bernstein. I might even suggest that Leonard Bernstein himself appeared to have been equally moved. I looked for this specific recording for 15+ years off and on. I am eagerly anticipating at least a partial reprise of what was a performance that I will remember the rest of my life.

5 out of 5 stars Grieving.......2007-01-09

This was a very beautiful piece reccommended to me by a family member after the death of my son. It's rare and was good to find it so easily.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful performance.......2006-12-30

I became a Mahler fan a couple of years ago when I bought a recording of his first and ninth symphonies. Earlier this year I purchased Bernstein's complete symphony cycle on DVD, and was further drawn into the wonderful music of Mahler. In my quest for recordings of every piece Mahler ever wrote, I encountered this CD and didn't hesitate. I'd heard Thomas Hampson sing Bernstein's Arias and Barcaroles, and I had already experienced Bernstein's excellent conducting (and composition). It came as no surprise that this recording was such a wonderful one. I really enjoyed the Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen, and it was doubly delightful to again hear Mahler's symphonies incorporating the same sprightly melodies. The Kindertotenlieder are perhaps not extraordinary, but are by no means lacking. I think that a soprano sometimes might better express these songs, but here Hampson does an ample job.

Overall, I give this recording five stars. Five for the conductor, five for the composer, and four and a half for the singer. RECOMMENDED!

4 out of 5 stars This is 70% conducting, 30% singing.......2006-03-22

Mahler's orchestral songs present such a complex and colorful instrumental part--fascinating enough on their own to do without a singer--that it takes a dominant voice to find the right balance. Here the young Thomas Hampson seems at times overhwlemed by Bernstein's highly personal interpretation, and his singing is strained by the slow tempos Bernstein has chosen.

Before 1991 Hampson had shown his capacity for Mahler, but on this CD he veers between an excellent, deeply felt Wayfarer cycle to a Kindertotenlieder where he struggles just to keep singing--admittedly, it's singing of a plush, refined kind--without finding the right emotional key. I don't find real depth of feeling or the ability to characterize the poetry, which is extremely important in thise songs. Bernstein's conceptions are beautiful, and that may carry the day for many listeners, but this CD is up against Fischer-Dieskau and Furtwangler, Janet Baker and Barbirolli, Kathleen Ferrioer and Bruno Walter. By those exalted standards it barely holds its own.

5 out of 5 stars A great collection of great songs by the Rasmus........2006-04-30

Ok, now the other two reviews were bad, so before you really do decide not to buy this album listen to me. I hardcore The Rasmus fan.

The album itself is from their PREVIOUS WORK, their first 3 albums where more funk/rock. This album is a collection of songs from those previous 3 albums, but it also has 2 songs not available from other albums, those being Liquid (Demo) and Raukauslaulu (sp?). The album itself is a great album, but you have to like the old sound of The Rasmus.

Still a great album if you want to hear a different side of this hot finnish band.

    2 out of 5 stars Well..........2005-07-25

I didn't much like this album since it's basically a collection of songs from their earlier CDs (Peep, Playboys, Hell of a Tester, Into...which I have because I'm a nut). And, as an added note, The Rasmus' previous work is very different from their current (Dead Letters). Either way, it's still The Rasmus. And according to their new album from...some site I can't remember, "It's a change for the better." (Which refers to Dead Letters and their new album.)

    1 out of 5 stars Just horrible!!!.......2005-04-30

What a disappointment!!! I bought this one because of "Dead Letters", a great album that combines melodic hard rock (in the vein of Bon Jovi's most inspirated stuff) with a contemporary sound. Great melodies and arrangements. Then I purchased "Hell of a collection" and I really got a big nausea. I almost broke this CD throwing it down to the floor. Here, the band doesn't seems to be The Rasmus. It could be aything but The Rasmus. Funk rhythms, horns, dancing oriented commercial stuff (it includes a pathetic cover of "Ghostbusters"!!!). Don't make the same mistake that I made... don't buy this piece of crap!!!

3 out of 5 stars No Words/Translations Included in Mine.......2007-05-28

A major tip on this set - it does not have the printed words and translations included. Major dissapointment. Unless you have a book, like Deryck Cooke's (which I have fortunately), with the words in it, you are out of luck. First time listeners beware.

Also, I am not fond of Janet Baker's voice, and have never understood the hype over her. She always sounds like she has cotton in her mouth.

A better alternative for Das Lied Von Der Erde, with words included and beautifully recorded sound is Eiji Oue with the Minnesota Orchestra. Michelle DeYoung's voice is beautiful and clear too. Check it out - worth the extra money: Das Lied von der Erde.

5 out of 5 stars Excellently Economical Collection, including the Deutche Kitch.......2007-01-02

I bought this omnibus of Mahler's 'Das Lied von Der Erde', 'Kindertotenlieder', 'Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen', and 'Des Knaben Wunderhorn' AFTER I bought the Phillips 432 279-2 of just 'Das Lied von Der Erde', which is the identical performance as the one on the less expensive and fuller two CD set. This 'Das Lied...' is every bit as good as when I reviewed alone, and it is by far the most interesting collection on the two CDs. I was never a big fan of 'Kindertotenlieder', given its subject, but I love listening to 'Des Knaben Wunderhorn' as it is by far the most gloriously simple borrowing of traditional German popular folk music of the 19th century into a classical interpretation. one can literally hear the oompah bands doing the works from which this was adapted. I love it to pieces.

3 out of 5 stars A grab bag of good and not so good.......2005-09-27

For a long time British critics have hailed Haitink's Das Lied, even though James King blares through the tenor part without regard for the words and the marvelous Janet Baker was caught about seven years past her prime. As for the Kindertotenlieder, Prey's version is good, certainly, and it's appealing to hear this cycle, which is for male voice, despite the fact that so many of the classic performances on CD (Ferrier, Ludwig, and Baker in particular)have been by women. But Prey is not a revelaiton by any means--if only Thomas quasthoff would record tis cycle.

The major disappointment, however, is the Knaben Wunderhorn cycle with Norman and Shirley-Quirk. She is in glorious voice but sounds too stiad and self-involved, and he simply has no proper German style--one keeps thinking that an English gentleman is trying not very hard to impersonate the tragic, bumptious soldiers that are the chief characters in the male songs. Overall, even at a bargain price I would look elsewhere for all these pieces.

5 out of 5 stars The Four Mahler Song Cycles in One Generous and Fine Album.......2005-09-17

Any time there is a chance to hear the favored orchestra for Mahler - the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam - involved in performances of any of Mahler's four song cycles, it is a reason for rejoicing. Somehow the sound of this orchestra and Mahler were meant to be one. Add to this bit of good fortune the fine conducting of Bernard Haitink and a group of first class soloists and Voila! - an album of 2 CDs, modestly priced, and a must for every collector of Mahler's music.

'Das Lied von der Erde', that would-be 9th symphony of the paranoid superstitious Mahler, is one of his most powerful symphony of songs. Here it is given a warm and introspective performance by Dame Janet Baker (just try to find a more poignant 'Der Abschied') and James King in his prime. This is followed by a soulful 'Kindertotenlieder' this time rendered by a male voice - Hermann Prey - giving these five melancholic songs a special Mahlerian significance, paying homage to the Mahler's inspiration for composing them. Prey then segues into the youthful 'Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen': again one song in particular is glowingly memorable with Prey's interpretation - 'Die zwei blauen augen von meinem Schatz'.

'Lieder aus Des Knaben Wunderhorn' served Mahler well in providing melodies and songs for his first four symphonies and hearing the cycle sung with the grace and fun and dignity by Jessye Norman and John Shirley-Quirk plumbs the depths of Mahler's ongoing inspiration. Haitink offers the support and orchestral playing that fits these soloists like a glove. In all, these are fine performances of these cycles, the binding thread being the same orchestra and conductor. Yes, we all have our favorite recordings of each of these works, but on the whole this album is difficult to match. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, September 05

5 out of 5 stars Songs of Pleasure, Loneliness, Sadness, and Loss ..........2004-02-03

"Already the wine beckons in the golden goblet..."
"Autumn mists float blue over the lake..."
"In the middle of the little pool/Stands a
    pavillion of green..."
    "Young maidens pick flowers..."
"If life were only a dream, Why then trouble
    and care?"
"The sun departs behind the mountains..."
These are English translations of the German
text to 6 Chinese poems that were translated into
German by Hans Bethege in -Die chinesische Flote-
[The Chinese Flute], a collection of free
translations of Chinese poetry. The 6 poems,
sung in German, with orchestral accompaniment
by the composer Gustav Mahler, form the wondrous
content of the song cycle, "Das Lied von der
Erde" [The Song of the Earth]. The titles of
the 6 songs in English are: (1) "The Drinking Song
    of Earth's Sorrow", sung by tenor James King;
    (2) "Autumn Sorrow", sung by mezzo-soprano Janet
Baker; (3) "Youth", sung by James King; (4) "Beauty",
sung by Janet Baker; (5)"Wine in Spring", sung by
James King; (6) "The Farewell", sung by Janet Baker.
The orchestra for all of the song cycles on this double
CD is the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and the
    conductor is Bernard Haitink.
The 2nd song group is "Kindertotenlieder" (Songs
on the Death of Children). There are 5 songs in
the group based on poems by Friedrich Ruckert.
The songs are sung by Hermann Prey, baritone.
According to the liner notes by Michael Kennedy,
these poems "struck a poignant chord with Mahler,
who had seen several of his brothers die in childhood.
For each poem Mahler finds the exact musical response,
with extraordinarily graphic and telling orchestration,
    refined, subtle, amost bare."
The 3rd song group is "Lieder eines fahrenden
Gesellen" (Songs of a Wayfarer). The music is
set "to the texts of four poems he [Mahler] wrote
himself. *** They were inspired by an unhappy love
affair ... for the wanderer in these poems...sees
his world collapse during the beauty of spring."
The singer is Hermann Prey, baritone.
The 4th song group is titled "Lieder aus Des
Knaben Wunderhorn" and contains texts gained
from an "anthology of German folk poetry published
in two volumes between 1805 and 1808." There are
12 of the 14 "Wunderhorn" settings which Mahler
composed on the 2nd disc in this set. The songs
cover "soldiers, and soldiers' ghosts, their
sweethearts and their fate" *** "a harrowing tale
of a starving child", "a parable of a song contest
between a cuckoo and a nightingale judged by a
donkey", and St. Anthony preaching to the fishes,
who all listen but never change their ways."
These songs are sung by Jessye Norman, soprano
    and James Shirley-Quirk, bass.
This is an excellent collection of all of these
song cycles on one source, with exceptional
artists, and inspired playing and conducting.

This is one of my desert island recordings. The communication between Barbirolli and Dame Janet Baker was at an unbelievably high level. The Rueckert songs are almost unbearable in their intensity and beauty. If you never hear another Mahler performance in your life outside of "Ich bin der Welt Abhanden gekommen" interpreted by these two sublime artists, then you will have experienced all there is to know about Mahler, the spiritual power of music and the dedication of two artists. Shattering....

        Album Description

This is the debut recording for Charlotte, NC based artist PJ Brunson. PJ has been a part of the Charlotte area folk/Americana scene for several years, playing solo, in duos and area bands. The songs on this CD are all original, written by PJ and her long time partner Jim "Cotton" Brindle. These twelve tunes speak of the land and common people, full of references to their Carolina heritage. We think you'll find them interesting.

3 out of 5 stars PJ Brunson's "Come Hell Or High Water".......2002-07-21

When PJ Brunson and Cotton Brindle wrote "Marvel Mystery Oil" from PJ's "Come Hell Or High Water" CD, they wrote about my Paw Paw and his shade tree antics. The other songs are just as wonderful. I bought the CD at a PJ show, and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys good songs about just plain folks. Three Stars!

Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is the most famous lieder singer of our age, and he recorded Mahler's songs several times. However, as is so often the case with singers, the remakes are not always better than the first go-round. These performances of the Wayfarer and Kindertotenlieder cycles from the beginning of the great singer's career, show him both at the height of his interpretive powers and in fine, youthful voice. The Ruckert-lieder come from much later and feature piano accompaniment by Daniel Barenboim. The difference in vocal quality is quite noticeable, though the dedication and intelligence remain constant. --David Hurwitz
