Twenty years ago, Elvis Costello wanted to bite the hand that fed him; on Superdrag's second major-label album, frontman John Davis, a former Buzz Bin baby, bares his own teeth. The band rings hardest and truest on "Do the Vampire," a Who-like yelp against backlash from radio and hometown fans, and "Bankrupt Vibration," which slaps the dead face of current "alternative" radio. A completely unpretentious leap forward from 1996's excellent Regretfully Yours, Head Trip in Every Key stands on the earlier album's hard-pop base while adding acoustic guitars, strings, horns, raga-rock elements, and echoes of everything from Odessey and Oracle, T. Rex, and Matthew Sweet to the first Boston album. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Headtrip In Every Key, literally.......2006-09-14

I purchased this album the day it came out in 97 by accident. I was at a local record store and they had some small adverts for it and I got it. I didn't really like their first album "Regretfully Yours" too much but I knew they had potential. From the opening track "I'm Expanding My Mind" I knew the album was going to be radically different from their first!! This album has everything but the kitchen sink thrown in. There's some theramin action in "I'm Expanding My Mind", mellotron in "She Is A Holy Grail", trumpets and other horns in "Mr. Underground", and suitar on "The Art Of Dying", jeez!!! I think one complaint some fans have is that there are too many mellow songs on the album but I disagree. This album does a good job of mixing the rockers ("Hellbent", "Sold You An Alibi", "Do The Vampire") with the more mellow songs ("Annetichrist", "She Is A Holy Grail", "Pine Away"). This album really doesn't have a stinker with the exception of "Shuck & Jive". This song should not have been on the album. If you're able to track down the demos for this album, there was an actual track "Headtrip In Every Key" which is such an awesome song that I can't believe they picked "Shuck & Jive" over "Headtrip In Every Key"!!! This is the only real blunder, other wise this album is a classic. They returned to their basics with the better album "In The Valley Of Dying Stars" 3 years later!!! So definately buy this album! It's a masterpiece...

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Album.......2005-06-15

I saw Superdrag for the first and only time during their spring 1998 tour for "Headtrip In Every Key". To this day it remains a defining moment in my life. I was blown away by their performance and stage presence, to say the least. I bought this record shortly after seeing that show- I HAD to. I had no choice in the matter.

I'm a fan of classic rock and pop and am a sucker for a good melody and a catchy hook, but "Headtrip" is much more than that. Simply put, this album is astonishing in its production and depth. John Davis is bar-none the most talented musician out there today. His ability to craft songs and lyrics of such a high caliber is stunning, and on Superdrag's second record it shines all over! Never have the band sounded so tight and so damn good! In my opinion, the members of the band during this period were the quintessential core of what Superdrag was. There were several lineup changes following this album and the chemistry of the band was never quite the same afterwards.

Easily the best of Superdrag's work (followed by "Regretfully Yours") In all honesty, this just may be my all-time favorite record. The tunes are laced with emotion and vigor of an unparalled magnitude. This is truly an underrated classic and a goldmine of a find. I felt special listening to this for the first time, like I'd discovered a beautiful secret. Final analysis: PERFECT SONGS FOR A FLAWLESS ALBUM. It just doesn't get any better than this. God bless you, John Davis.

5 out of 5 stars Superdrag do it again.......2005-04-02

First of all, I have to say that this band isn't the normal style of music that I listen to. I usually like progressive metal and rock and classical, but ever since I got "Regretfully Yours" back when 'Sucked Out' hit MTV, I have followed the progress of this band. I have to say that this is probably the only band I ever got into from one radio single, and as soon as I listened to their debut album, I was hooked. This album, "Head Trip in Every Key", is a mature leap in songwriting, letting the boys explore their darker side on songs like 'She is a Holy Grail' and just straight up rock with tracks like 'Sold You An Alibi'. What a great follow up to a spectacular debut album. These guys will be in my CD player for many years to come.
And as for the ignorant idiot who wrote the first review of this album, Superdrag had plenty of other stuff they COULD have put on the radio. Their label just didn't want to get behind them after their first single, so they hung them out to dry. That's why corporate rock sucks, and Superdrag was too good for the crappy mainstream anyway. I just hope there comes a day when record companies don't decide who hits it big, the music fans do. I can dream....

5 out of 5 stars Utterly Amazing.......2005-03-24

So what do you do when you've had a major hit single and the label wants you to release your second album? You spend their funds making your masterpiece. That's exactly what John Davis and company did for 'Head Trip...'. Production-wise, it's phenomenal. The songs are great, just classic. Although I've loved every Superdrag release, this album holds the throne as their shining moment. Incredible power-pop for any true fan.

4 out of 5 stars Rock N Roll Satisfaction.......2005-01-29

Head Trip is simply a fantastic rock and roll album. Superdrag make great records, this is their sophomore effort and it too is great. John Davis is a great singer, Head Trip In Every Key is a great rock and roll album and gives a very satisfying listen.
