Swing, à la Django Reinhardt and Bob Wills, is the jazz that even jazz haters can love. Its bouncy energy appeals to one and all, and in concert, the Hot Club of Cowtown are among the finest purveyors of the style. As players, they have absorbed all the lessons of their heroes; however, as songwriters, they missed a few. Violinist Elena Fremerman's "Home" sounds like a verse to an old standard that goes on and on without ever reaching the chorus, while Whit Smith's tale of a wicked stepmother is a relentlessly bleak essay set to perky music. Smith's "Sleep" and Fremerman's "Secret of Mine" fare better, but still pale beside the offhand brilliance of the Rodgers and Hart chestnut "You Took Advantage of Me." Swing fans will enjoy plenty of hot playing, but newcomers to the band will find some evidence of their live charm only on the Gypsy-style instrumental "Fuli Tschai" and the last track, the gospel-tinged "Pray for the Lights to Go Out." --Michael Ross

3 out of 5 stars Not Deep but Fun.......2007-04-12

I have to admit that I bought this solely for "Cherokee Shuffle", which is probably my favorite fiddle tune; the only thing wrong with their version of it on here is that it's too short. The rest of the CD is musically very good, especially the two violin instrumentals, and remarkably in keeping with swing style even though many of the songs are recently-composed. The songs themselves are not necessarily the most interesting, although they are well-performed.

3 out of 5 stars lacks the zip of 'tall tales".......2006-05-14

Everything about "Hot Club of Cowtown" is implied in the band's name. Their music is a combination of Django Reinhardt's string jazz and Bob Wills' western swing. Other bands have been down this street before, such as Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks or Martin, Bogan and Armstrong, and the "neo-swing" groups that sprung up during the 90's.

In contrast to the previous "Tall Tales" which emphasized western swing, this cd tilts toward the jazzy side, and it seems a little lackadaisical. Whit Smith and Elana Fremerman both have voices that are kind of homespun in their appeal. When Fremerman attempts subtle jazz phrasings, she isn't on the level of somebody like Diana Krall. On a waltz time tune like "Before You", or negotiating a halting melody like "Home", she isn't shown at her best.

On "Sleep", and particularly with"It Stops With Me", Whit's matter-of-fact voice works well with the film noir style lyrics. But most of the album seems to lack energy. I'd go with "Tall Tales". which has a lot more spring in the playing, and some nice horn work in spots, too. It has the jolt that "Ghost Train" needs and sorely lacks.

5 out of 5 stars Best CD I heard in 2003.......2004-05-26

I saw this band in Chicago at the 2004 American Music Festival at Fitzgerald's (my favorite cultural event of the year). They blew me away with their charm, energy, and virtuosity. I picked up this CD on the spot, and immediately fell in love. Elana's vocals are sublime, and her fiddling ranges from sweet to incendiary; Whit's vocals are sly - my wife said it's the verbal equivalent of "bedroom eyes," and he's a wonderful guitarist; and Jake's bass playing is charismatic and a joy to watch in concert.

The originals here are every bit as good as the classic songs they do so well. In fact, I'd encourage them to write more!

A few months after buying this CD and listening to it many times, I had to drive a long way through bad rush-hour traffic to a wake. Normally, this would be a presciption to guarantee a foul mood. But when I popped this CD into my player... all was well in my world. It really has that kind of effect on me.

I now own all of their CDs available here - I just went to their website and see they have a few Japanese releases. I think this is their best, followed by Continental Stomp. And if they ever come to your town for a show, drop everything you're doing and make sure you get out to see them. You'll have a joyful time.

      5 out of 5 stars Ghost Train.......2003-10-29

The Hot Club of Cowtown is a wonderful new group. This is their best CD, although all of them are great. They are innovative, but have respect for some of the more standard tunes. They obviously love the music they play. I have seen them twice and they are a joy to watch, lively, energetic, yet laid back. If you can't spend an evening with them, Ghost Train is the next best thing!

5 out of 5 stars Something to get your toes tappin.......2002-11-12

You would be hard pressed to find a more upbeat and lively CD. If listen to this CD and don't enjoy it, you don't like western swing. "It stops with me" I think is the best song on the album, but every song is very good.

4 out of 5 stars Varied and fascinating North Texas disc.......2000-05-23

The Klavier Wind Recording Project has found great favor with wind-ensemble enthusiasts everywhere. Highlighting pieces of the standard repetoire while at the same time bringing new composers to the fore, Klavier has delivered recordings of a considerable standard, boasting superb sound and solid musicianship. Luminaries is one of those recordings.

Opening with a band transcription of Dmitri Shostakovich's "Prelude No. 14 in E-flat minor," which immediately presents the rich, dark tessituras of which the wind symphony is capable, the disc segues to another brief Shostakovich work - the much-lighter, more martial "Folk Dances." Using various Russian folk melodies, the piece culminates with both an accelerando and crescendo toward a rousing finish. Young composer and Northern Arizona alumnus Eric Whitacre's "Ghost Train Triptych" follows. Whitacre, who recently completed graduate work at Julliard, has enjoyed growing popularity with musicians and audiences everywhere for his works. On a personal note, I recently participated in the Nebraska Wind Consortium premiere of his deep and moving "October" (2000). "Ghost Train," in its three movements, attempts to evoke an impression of the ghost train legend, deeply rooted in American folklore. The piece is characteristic of much of Whitacre's other music, with its polytonalities and jazz-tinged harmonies. Very interesting and very satisfying, this is a true find among recorded band music.

Japanese composer Yasuhide Ito contributes his moving "Gloriosa," which is a three movement work inspired by the "hidden Christians" of Kyushu, who continued to practice their faith in secret despite its abolition in 1614. Ito notes how the Latin words of Gregorian chants "were gradually 'Japanized' during the two hundred years of hidden practice." "Gloriosa," composed as a lament for the Christian suffering effectively blends elements of Gregorian chant and Japanese folk. Paul Hindemith's oft-recorded "Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes of Carl Maria von Weber" concludes this CD, receiving a generally good performance, although section balances leave a bit to be desired at times. In all fairness, one cannot always compare each "Metamorphosis" to, say, the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra's rendition. The "March" on the North Texas disc though, is the most exciting this listener has heard anywhere.

In all, this compact disc will likely hold the most appeal for band aficionados. Many people I've personally encountered outside of bands and orchestras (who claim to enjoy classical music) are almost immediately turned off to "band" music. Despite all its viability as a serious medium for artistic expression, bands and true music for the wind ensemble has been and always will be a different brand of classical music. Recommended for wind music enthusiasts or those curious to hear more substantial literature than that to which they were exposed in school. The Whitacre and Ito will make it worth it, believe me.

5 out of 5 stars Member of the band.......1999-07-05

I was a member of the UNT Wind Symphony when we recorded this CD in 1996. I just wanted to take this opportunity to praise Mr. Corporan for his fine work and musical interpretation bordering on genius. He is an incredible conductor who succeeds in drawing the best performance possible from his students. I am sure I speak for everyone who has played in one of his ensembles when I say that he is both a challenge and an inspiration to work with. This CD is most definitely a credit to him and to those of us who were privileged enough to collaborate on the project.

5 out of 5 stars Don't find yourself on the track............1998-11-27

This cd is wonderful. If you have an interest in both classical music and soundtracks, plus a vivid imagination, then you will love this cd. I give the greatest credit of this beautifully haunting cd to Eric Whitacre, a graduate from Northern Arizona University. His piece, Ghost Train, has had me hooked for the last 48 hours. I've played it repeatedly over and over again. Each time I can see the train bearing down on me. If you have trouble finding the right classical music because there just isn't that spark, this may be your chance at finding perfection.

5 out of 5 stars A welcome return for acclaimed Southern Rockers .......2005-04-27

I am very surprised that nobody has written anything here in praise of this fine album. Grinderswitch originally came to fame in the Southern Rock boom of the early to mid 1970's. Their return album 'Ghost Train from Georgia' updates their rootsy Blues/Rock fusion for a new era. Dru Lombar's throaty growl and distinctive slide guitar is still potent and while its a completely new band behind him, the music is still classy Souhern Blues/Rock. Lombar's vocals and guitar excell on Where'd You Learn to Love Like This?' and the shuffle beat of 'Dixie Flyer' while 'Homebound' gets a powerful new reading. 'Who's Been Cheatin' on Who'recalls prime time Robert Cray while the title track 'Ghost Train from Georgia' carries on the Southern Rock legend appropriately. This is cool, solid Southern Blues Rock played with style and confidence. Welcome back Grinderswitch-we have missed you.

        Album Description

Remember the days when you'd buy a record and it took you on a journey, from beginning to end?! That's what ROB HOTCHKISS has created with MIDNIGHT GHOST. This solo offering from TRAIN's founding member begins where the GRAMMY-AWARD-WINNING band's first record left off. Fans of the more rootsy, early TRAIN will find the guitar-driven, introspective approach to MIDNIGHT GHOST refreshing. ROB HOTCHKISS has teamed up with original and former members of COUNTING CROWS (Steve Bowman and Dave Bryson) to make the kind of record that you'll put back on when it's finished.

5 out of 5 stars Where is the follow up CD ?.......2006-09-07

Okay Mr. Hotchkiss, after buying and giving away 57 of the Midnight Ghost Cd,s, all the Art Schools are wanting to hear your second Break out cd..This music is being incorperated in many artistic productions, recitals, and short films, in large part, due to the magnificent quality and feeling that is expressed in this meaningful production of songs..As a Professor of Artistic Developement, for several proffesional schools and venues worldwide, I encourage Rob to keep writing, playing, and entertaining, with the same insight you have always used..I am also using the cd in my teachings for the International House of Blues Education Foundation..So we are now waiting for production number 2..Your failures and accomplishments in the past have brought you to a level that all true listeners and musicians will appreciate, unless they of course hold some type of meaningless grudge..The artists and groups I know and work with, would welcome the opportunity to have Rob collaborate with them, whenever he once again feels as though it is time for him to go back out on the mainstage..This cd shows what a truly talented artist can do when finally given the chance to follow their Karma and let the inner artist shine through..

        5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2006-09-06

Reading some of the reviews of this record, it's obvious that some of the old Train fans are angry that Rob left the band. It's easy to see why. Listening to Midnight Ghost, I realize that in losing Rob, Train lost their finest songwriter. This CD is filled with the kind of material i WISH Train was still capable of creating. This is one of the finest recordings I've heard in many years!

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing and inspiring.......2004-09-17

I have always been a major fan of Train, from the good old days of the self titled album, to the latest releases and even the covers and songs that never made it to an album release. From listening to 'Midnight Ghost', you can easily see just how much of an influence Rob was to the band. His solo album is reminisent of the old Train style of writing and performance, focusing predominantly on the music wich tantilates the senses. This is pure easly listening music, full of meaning and personality which is duely missed amoungst many major acts within the UK and the mainstream music industry. From the country feel of 'It's Alright' to the contravercial notions played upon within 'Try' Hotchkiss joyfully enbarks us on a journey throughout his album. The not so well known 'Stay' which was once recorded by Train is portrayed in a new and well accepted form which is obviously derived from Hotchkiss' personality and sounds remarkably fresh even though the song was writen almost ten years ago. One can only hope that Mr Hotchkiss continues in his persue of music and gives us many more enjoyable songs in the near future.

5 out of 5 stars This is what you should be listening to.......2004-08-12

Leave the writing to Pat Monahan? YES!! But only if you want dated, cheesy lyrics such as "I put ketchup on my scrambled eggs" and "I'm the leftover turkey for the world's mayonnaisey." Now that's what I call a "special" writer. I am a Train fan, but Mr. Monahan's lyrical talent took a detour somewhere during the recording of their last release. I am not surprised Mr. Hotchkiss decided to distance himself. It made me cringe and all I had to do was listen to the songs, not actually perform them.

If you want cookie-cutter pop rock, don't buy "Midnight Ghost." If you want music that is written for the sake of generating that "radio friendly hit," don't buy this album. You will be disappointed and well, your taste in music is not all that great.

"Midnight Ghost" is full of songs that are honest and written from the heart. It is untouched by the hands of those who are ruining music for the sake of the almighty dollar. It is a refreshing change from what's being force-fed to the masses on a daily basis. It is music that you can enjoy, music that you can share with others - without cringing.

Man this guy sang great harmonies for Train but he should leave the lead vocals to Pat Monahan. And maybe the writing too.
