Album Description
If Nick Drake decided to hit the open road with Cat Stevens and Ryan Adams, the first album they'd likely put in would be David Berkeley's "The Confluence." It's an acoustic gem, a layered wash of natural sounds (mandolin, cello, guitars, bass, African percussion, warm harmonies). The melodies are intoxicating. The lyrics are poetic. The music is honest. The songs are linger in your brain.

Catch a Rising Star.......2003-07-13
Sweet but not cloying, the music on this impressive debut album will draw you in and keep you there. Berkeley's arresting melodies and gorgeous voice alone make this cd worth buying. But listen carefully to the provocative lyrics, and you'll discover that this talented young man not only can sing but also has something to say.
The Rebirth of Acoustic Music.......2003-03-19
This is a damn good CD. God, David Berkeley can sing.
If you like music that you'll feel as opposed to just hear, if you like lyrics that will make you think, pick up this CD.

disappointing.......2006-01-08
i'm a HUGE piano fan and a santoor fan as well. so when i saw this album i thought i'd love it. unfortunately, it is as my title says: disappointing. first off, why does the album (and why do so many of the songs) start off with synthesizer sounds? actually, why are there synthesizer sounds at all on an album advertised as a confluence of piano and santoor? not that synths are universally bad (i like electronica) but in the context of combining piano and santoor, it seems unnecessary. perhaps it's because they didn't have the money to hire real musicians. it ruins what might have been an ok album. they could have just left it out - it seems like there's a lot of stuff that's simply extraneous: along with the cheesy synths, there's cheesy electric guitar sounds (which ruin the experience of norwegian wood). it's as if they thought by adding in more variety they could make it more interesting. but i think in this case paring it down to the play and tension between two unique instruments would have made the album stronger.
my other main complaint is that they don't seem to have really COMBINED the two instruments, but rather just played songs where the two instruments take turns. this is perhaps the biggest letdown. the whole way through while listening, i'm waiting for a moment where the two of them actually play together and build off of each other... and it never happens.
the great santoor-piano crossover album still remains to be made.
Surprisingly very good........2003-06-27
As a general rule, I tend to be very skeptical of mixed musical genres (artistes as well as instruments) , believing them to be usually having negative synergy. Yet the first time I listened to Confluence at a relative's place, I was soon captivated. The santoor has long been my favorite listening instrument and to my surprise, the combination of santoor and piano goes remarkably well despite the somewhat eclectic choice of numbers. The tracks on the CD have a strong classical orientation, including a handful of golden Bollywood movie favorites and just about every track is good. It no doubt helps that the key artists, Richard Clayderman on the piano and Rahul Sharma (son of the incomparable Pandit Shivkumar Sharma) are established names in their respective fields who need no introduction to music lovers. Rahul has also composed some of the numbers on this CD which impressed me further. Able support to piano and santoor is given by guitar, flute and percussion. Picking a favorite is hard as all the numbers are good but if I had to choose, I would recommend Blues Heaven for the interweaving of melody from instrument to instrument, with Dekha Ek Khwab from Silsila a close second. Highly recommended.
Confluence CD will make you fall in love with Santoor.......2003-04-14
If you never had a Santoor CD this CD can make you fall in love with its sweet melody. This CD departs from classic Indian Music and includes a good mix of Piano. However santoor overtakes the lead in most songs. So if you want Piano this is not a good choice.
Pleasing Melodies.......2003-02-25
Having heard the live performance of both the artists I was compelled to buy this CD and is now my favourite. Based on Indian classical music and hit bollywood film music, the compilation is melodious and a welcome refreshing change from the usual fare. Correctly titled confulence it features the best of both prodigies. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes Richard Clayderman or Rahul Sharma.
Confluence not such a confluence after all.........2003-02-14
I liked the album. But it did not live up to my expectations.
Richard Clayderman does bring a lot of his romantic touch to the music, but somehow the combination with Rahul Sharma doesn't quite live up. I enjoyed the selection of songs on the album. Yeh Hain Bombay Meri Jaan is a favourite of mine and was pleasantly surprised to see Norwegian Wood included. Also liked Tere Ghar Ke Saamne. Definitely could have had more tracks on the album.

There's something in the water.......2002-01-08
Great piece of work from a great songwriter and a Southwestern visionary. This CD grew on me right away, and repeated listenings have revealed more and more. "Cold" and "Pontiac" alone make this one a keeper, but there's more gems. So with the likes of Howe Gelb, Giant Sand, and Calexico turning out musical masterpieces at such a steady rate, and writers like Ai, Mitch Cullin, and Barbara Kingslover doing the same with literature...I think there really must be something in the water down there in Tucson, Arizona.
Smooth Traffic.......2001-04-18
This solo album from Howe Gelb makes a perfect bookend to Chore of Enchantment, the latest Giant Sand album. As far as solo albums go, I'd rank this higher than his last (Hisser). The ghost of Rainer still looms long over this album, though. Not a bad thing. If you've never owned a Howe gelb solo album, this should be the one. THere are some moments of transcendent beauty (Place where a river was, I think is the track title) and fun--note the cover of I can't help falling in love. The gentlemen from Grandaddy are a positive aspect, but it seems that they're still learning how to run with Howe's sprawling song tendencies. Listen to "Chore", then "Confluence" and dump some sand in your living room. Create your own desert. Yes.

One of my best "core" album.......2007-01-25
If you like Thursday/Thrice/The Used, you'll probably like this band. It's one of the album I listen to the most when I'm in the mood for that type of music. The signing comes from the heart, just listen to "On Memory" and you'll know what I mean. Really great band that should be known better.
Mattio.......2006-03-11
hey whats up, this album is kickass! Also, i used to work with the drummer matt brubaker at isaacs. Awesome Guy, peace
Great CD.......2004-05-08
This is honestly one of the best CD's I have, I listen to it a lot and it still sounds really good. I would suggest buying this album, or at the very least go check these guys out live, I can't wait until they come to Portland.
wow.......2004-01-22
Great all around cd that combines hardcore and more mellow music. The best song if i have to pick one is vanilla with its amazing ending with both singers harmonizing. They manage to not really sound like any other bands out there musically and vocally. This cd is for anyone who like hardcore or more mellow music.
aMaZiNg!!.......2003-11-23
This album is so awesome!! It reminds me of Thursday (never a bad thing) but with more screaming!! Totally cool band!! Pick it up!! You'll love it!! Check out: "July's Memoir", "Vanilla" and "Even" for starters.

Album Description
Resurrection by Degrees is a musical confluence of intelligent, biting lyrics interposed with an infectious blend of roots rock, folk, blues and country into a distinctive sound that speaks to the strength and fragility of the human condition. It is grand and nostalgic, emotional and dramatic, pleading and sensitive; it is an excellent tribute (or companion, for that matter) to the place where we all convalesce now and again, the place that exists only for us to make clear the division between what just happened and what happens next.
Customer Reviews:
I have just about worn out one copy of this CD. Awesome........2004-12-30
See my other review on cdbaby.com. I got this CD for Christmas and I wanted to write a word just to say that any fan of blues, rock or country should check out this CD. I have Blackthorne's first CD and they just keep getting better! This CD blends some awesome styles and the result is remarkable. I love the music, but that is not a surprise from this crew. The musicians are just phenomenal. The lyrics are what just blow me away. Poetic, haunting, eerily familiar (who hasn't "drowned in luxuries that they can't afford"?). I can't say enough about the CD. Go ahead and buy it. Take my word for it, you won't be disappointed!
A Note from the Producer.......2004-11-19
Dave Hill here. Everyone who likes rock, counrty, or folk will love this album. There are so many different elements from many genres represented. Johnny's lyrics are real, heartfelt and intelligent. When I first met Johnny, I was filling in for their old drummer and was blown away by his intensity. I've always loved all styles of music and immediately wanted to drop everything and dig in to this project. Hopefully you'll take my advice and grab a copy for yourself. Put on the headphones, relax, and get ready for a journey into music in the likes of Springsteen, Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, Tull, Johnny Cash and Led Zep. It's all there! You'll love it.
