King was heard to have said 'But I've got to say that I'm sorry, Peter Green is best'. From her beginnings in the sixties folk music scene in Boston, Maria Muldaur has continued to explore a range of American musics, first with the Jim Kweskin Jug Band, followed by a pair of albums with then-husband Geoff Muldaur. The '70s brought her commercial success with the release of her debut solo album and the single "Midnight at the Oasis." The '80s found her recording sets devoted to jazz, gospel, and swing, while the '90s albums celebrated her love of New Orleans and blues. A Woman Alone With the Blues is devoted to 12 songs associated with Peggy Lee. From the slow burn of "Fever" to the swinging "Everything Is Moving Too Fast," this is a well-paced set with Muldaur backed by a supple eight-piece combo. Dan Hicks guests on "Winter Weather," trading verses with Muldaur over a snappy big band arrangement. Lee's career drew from a sufficiently diverse and uniformly potent range of songwriters (Ellington, Arlen, Berlin, Leiber & Stoller, etc.) and this album is likewise rich in its breadth. --David Greenberger

One of Muldaur's Best.......2007-03-31
For some reason I could never stand Peggy Lee; can't quite put my finger on it but perhaps it was something about her voice that irritated me. For that reason I was a little reluctant to get this album. My doubts were gone right from the first song. Muldaur's treatment of these songs is superb and this is one of her best albums. I could be considered a bit biased. I now have 17 Muldaur albums and not a bad one in the lot; all 4 and 5 star-rated albums. One thing I have noticed too is the quality band work that backs up Muldaur on most of her albums, including this one. Buy ANY Muldaur blues album for a real treat.

A Woman Alone With the Blues
Maria Muldaur
Telarc Records CD-83568
Faced with memorial albums, such as this tribute to Peggy Lee, the critic often has trouble deciding whether to review the original artist or the one performing the covers. This is not a problem when dealing with Maria Muldaur, whose own take on torch songs is absolutely opaque to the influences of others. Even when the others are the original recording artists. Even when the other is Peggy Lee. It is true that Ms. Muldaur has never had another "Midnight at the Oasis," and that it seems difficult to keep her off of bad albums, but her own best efforts, those over which she exercises artistic control, remain the hottest burning torch songs available.
There is a late 40s-early 50s eroticism here, an old-style, sultry ambience that makes clothing sexy; that turns a clarinet line into foreplay. Instrumentation, while we're on that subject, includes guitar, piano, alto and tenor sax, clarinet, flute, trumpet, trombone, bass trombone, bass, drums and vibes. Control is a large part of this release, too. There are solos, but no excesses. Lyrics are pared to avoid repetition, and the music behind them swoops up or down appropriately with the precision and grace of a bird of prey.
Due to a circle of friends, neighbors and peers that, over the years, has ranged from Kitty Wells to Rev. Gary Davis to Bob Dylan, Maria Muldaur has been through a number of musical phases over the years, some more interesting and exciting than others, and one never knows quite what to expect from her new CDs. Thus, when something as spectacularly good as A Woman Alone With the Blues comes out, it comes with an extra kick for the buyer, something akin to doing well at the racetrack and feeling the dual exhilarations of winning and of obtaining a large sum of money.
Maria Muldaur: A Superb Blues Singer.......2005-05-15
I absolutely love this album by Maria Muldaur. It may be a homage to the late Peggy Lee but Muldaur makes the songs her own. She has experimented with many genres in the past and has been successful in all that she has chosen. Muldaur should be much more well-known amongst the general public than she is but like any artist who has been pegged by a bit radio hit, such as Melanie with "Brand New Key" and Janis Ian with "At Seventeen", Muldaur is best remembered for "Midnight At the Oasis". All three artists have continued to record and have moved into different types of music. Muldaur is a true artist and this album is evidence of that.I cannot recommend it highly enough. I am certain that Peggy Lee herself would have liked it very much. The songs were specially picked by Maria after immersing herself in Peggy Lee's music and it was difficult for her to choose a limited number of great songs made famous by Peggy Lee but her selections have proven to be the best for her own renditions. It is a very fine Blues album and I have no hesitatiion in giving it five stars. It it the type of album that is not suitable for background music--it is captivating and one is drawn into really listen. That, to me, is the sign of a great album.
Better Late Than Never.......2003-10-23
Based on her last two releases, Maria Muldaur has become one of my favorite singers. Her rendition of "Some Cats Know", on the Peggy Lee tribute, should be enough to convince you that she belongs in the ranks of the greats. But there is so much more to enjoy. "I Don't Know Enough About You" ,"Everything Is Moving Too Fast", "Black Coffee"...all are handled with class and sass! Now I need to start catching up on all the stuff I missed over the years. I'm looking forward to it.
Smokey Joe's.......2003-06-14
This is my 14th album by Maria Muldaur; and she keeps getting better, creating a diverse body of work. With her exquisite last CD remembering blues greats like Memphis Minnie on "Richland Woman Blues" and this set remembering Peggy Lee, she's becoming an interpretive musical historian of significance like the late John Hartford. With 21st century technical support, this set could be a blast from the 1930's - 1940's jazz era. Maria reinvents the music through her personality and makes it come alive. Among the many highlights on the CD is Peggy Lee's signature song "Fever" which burns and aches with libidinous longing. Dan Hicks duets on the swinging "Winter Weather" with the horns and brass pulsing to perfection. The two tracks that have me reaching for "repeat" come smack dab in the middle of the CD: Peggy Lee's penned "Everything Is Moving Too Fast" is a loose jazz & jive that'll set your toe to tapping while "Waitin' for the Train to Come In" highlights Maria's coos and sighs through a lovely melody. "Freedom Train," "Black Coffee" and the title track are also great highlights among an exquisitely strong set. This set will let you turn back the clock, imagine an earlier easier time when melodies were strong, Peggy Lee was one of her era's strongest vocalists, and somehow we are transported by Maria's magnificent performance to see that the music sounds as wonderful today as it did when it was first written. Enjoy!

early 70's fleetwood mac.......2007-01-10
What can I say. I haven't like fleetwood mac since peter green left
5 stars for Greenie.......2003-12-03
Why five? Because you loved the man's touch and feel on the strings; because he sounded so good with soulful down-hearted blues on "Trying So Hard to Forget" and "Coming, I'm Coming"? Dig that slide he's teasing. Or kick it back on the porch with a "Kind Hearted Woman" by way of Mr. Robert Johnson.
And tell me how woeful and hurtin' Peter cries on "Jumping At Shadows"--who's in more pain, his song or his guitar? Listen to those peals of sorrow--the voice AND the tortured notes he's pulling off that Les Paul. You didn't feel the knife cut you that deep until you heard the end of his solo, did ya?
If grief could be made into work, he could sing the nails out of the wall, and don't forget the squeals and squawks he'd grind out on lead guitar. I heard "Same Old Blues" by Bonnie Bramlett; Peter would make the perfect duet. And lookee-here, Albert King's "Born Under a Bad Sign" is as menacing as the original. Those are Albert's signature licks, aren't they?
Shake it, shake it, with "Tribal Dance." It's spacy and it moves. And could that be a hint of a David Gilmore-like influence on "Time for Me To Go"?
Get this because you loved the early Fleetwood Mac. Buy it because you have a friend who loves to learn new guitar ideas from an old source. Keep it because you need it in your collection.
Much Better Than I Expected! Peter Does The Blues!.......2002-01-02
I bought this not knowing exactly what it was. I had hoped it would not be Peter doing the weird stuff that I had heard plagued some of his post-Fleetwood Mac solo records. I was not disappointed! This is a really great collection if you are just looking to recapture some of the old Bluesbreakers/Fleetwood Mac sound. Much of what is here would have sat comfortably next to any of the Fleetwood Mac era tracks.
In response to one of the other reviewers, if you had read the back cover notes you would not have been misled into thinking it's all from the Fleetwood Mac days - in any case I knew this couldn't all be from the Mac era since I didn't recognise most of the songs, and I know all of them from the box set. Actually, only Sandy Mary and Jumping at Shadows are definitely from the Fleetwood Mac lineup (from the Boston Tea Party concerts).
It is not clear exactly where some of the rest of the songs originate - the liner notes are no help at all although it is claimed that at least one track is from the Bluesbreakers era (but, no indication as to which one!).
Walkin' Down The Road opens the disc with a classic blues cut that I had never heard - great stuff! Worth the price of admission alone just for that song! The next three songs are probably from a live show and the sound quality suffers, but actually this adds to rather than detracts from the music - gives it a certain vibe! In any case, the performances on those live tracks are really great! Especially "Kind Hearted Woman" which you should compare to the later version that Peter did recently. I think I like this one better!
The rest of the tracks (including the first song) are in fine sound quality and I would guess are from the post-Mac era(?). Good stuff, and every song is blues-based - no weird experimental stuff.
I highly recommend this disc if you want a sample of the post-Mac Peter Green filtered to give you just the real blues stuff, you will not be disppointed!
Where's Fleetwood Mac?.......2000-09-05
I thought I was getting an album of Original Fleetwood Mac, but only two of the 16 cuts feature Mac. Eleven are solo Peter Green from after he left the band. I've been a fan of Peter Green since I first heard Albatross in 1967, so I still enjoyed the music, but it is grossly mislabeled.
Highs, lows, tortured blues.......2000-06-19
A broad collection of blues covers and originals that spans the curiously blue life of Peter Green. The vocals are every bit as revealing as the fine guitar work (from gritty to smooth, harnessed to wild). I would have loved to hear Peter and Albert together on Born under a Bad Sign, but I guess I'll settle for Peter's short, but reverential cover of this fine blues anthem. An earlier issue of this disc included Black Magic Woman and Green Manilishi, but I think their absence does not detract from this cd. I think inclusion of The Supernatural would have been an important cut, but Oh Well!

Customer Reviews:
eerily transcendent.......2004-02-17
This is a live album, and quite honestly, though I like Lake Trout's work, I don't like this album as a whole. Their live performances today are better than this, and they seem to have come a long way since then, judging from this release. Its seeming lack of direction is too loose and free-flowing for my taste, and the majority of it sounds like an almost exact (though drawn out) mold for what's to come on their following release, Another One Lost, their best album to date. Still, I recommend it for the songs "#2," "I'll Be" (also featured on Volume for the Rest of It) and "Throw Me the Whip." #2 in particular is intense and utterly hypnotic, the best song on the album. In fact, I would sum up the mood of the entire album as reflecting an intense, introspective dive into the unknown. If you like music that takes you to the edge of trippy and weird (in a good way), then you'll appreciate Lake Trout. That said, they really should put out a live album from among their most recent performances and include songs such as "Peel," "Bully," and the untitled songs that are featured on the encoded MP3 version of AOL, some of which are taken from a live performance at XM Satellite Radio in D.C.
Fantastic blend of indy-rock and drum'n'bass.......2003-05-21
I'm not sure I can add much more than has already been said, but the flow to this album is superb, and DJ Who adds a perfect dimension to the unique Lake Trout sound. While at times the compositions themselves seem a bit weak, the album as a whole is fantastic to listen to, and I had it in my car CD player for three or four days straight, which is pretty amazing considering I have a twenty-minute commute each way to work. I definitely recommend this album for anyone curious as to what the hype is about...Lake Trout mixes the rhythms of drum'n'bass quite well with some of the sounds of more standard indy-rock, while even blending in a little bit of the jazzy aspect to their songs. It's dark, but not brooding, and there is a lot of motion to the album. Definitely a recommended CD to pick up.
Jazz-rooted, electronica-visited, uberoriginal rockers.......2002-11-10
Lake Trout started as a swoony jazzy thing that reminded me of Sting's _Dream of the Blue Turtles_. Then, a few years ahead of their time, the delved into a drum-n-bass thing that's in evidence in heaps on this release, Alone at Last. It isn't conventional drum n bass, in that it's all live (the drummer is SICK!), but also in that it rocks and rolls harder and farther than most. Excellent stuff!
The band is of course off in another direction. More recently, they're more directly rock, losing the jazzy and electronic edges for something a bit more heavy and fast. Alone at Last is a great taste of them before that transition.
Get this one...don't waste your time on STS9.......2002-09-23
Lake Trout is an amazing band. They got the jam/jazz/post rock/minimalist/ambient/electronica vibe going on strong. Blows mediocre comparisons like STS9 out of the water...no pun intended ;)

Excellent early Bryant.......2005-04-19
Bryant (solo piano) 12/19/58.
Five of the 7 tunes are blues, Bryant's forte (the 2 least successful tracks are the non-blues). ME AND THE BLUES to me is the best: taken slow, it's a great tune and Bryant does marvels with it. Sometimes solo piano albums find the player getting too introsective or showy, but that's never the case here. Bryant is a joy to listen to. Highly recommended.
Awesome.......2001-03-22
This is my first Ray Bryant album. I've got to say it's one of the best stride albums I've heard. Totally his own style. He really moves, rhythm is great, and chord choices are wonderful surprises. No one could be disappointed.
Bryant Struts His Soul.......2001-01-28
A Prestige gem a la solo! Refreshing, unpretentious, gospel-inflected bluesy-jazz, SOLO piano (hard to believe that this is one man playing alone--never busy, always tasty, the man knows when not to play as well as when to play). The Philadelphia born Bryant after stints with Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins, returns to his rooots in this delightful album that you can relax and listen to over and over. Recorded by the Rudy Van Gelder in 1958 in good ole Hackensack, NJ.

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-03-25
I have always admired the nonchalant and somewhat dry humor of Noel Coward lyrics, not to mention the interesting twists and turns that his music often takes, I admire Ian Bostridge for attempting his songs and doing a "bang-up" job of it! A quote from Ian Bostridge prior to making this recording:"My first concern while contemplating a disc of Noel Corward songs was finding a voice for them,,,,,,We need to remember that, in Coward, we have not only a formidable playwright and screenwriter, but also the English equivalent of Irving Berlin or Cole Porter". After I heard this from Bostridge (on an interview on ABC) I began to appreciate the songs much more than previously. There is much philosophising going on as in "I Travel Alone" and some are quite humorous as in "Mad Dogs and Englishmen". One has to listen more than once to get it all, but it's worth the time. And I definately think that Ian found the voice to sing them.Do I prefer Bostridge singing classical??Of course!!!!!But I still enjoy a break now and then and I'll take this disc for that reason.
Mad dogs and an Englishman called Ian .......2005-09-02
I must say that I approached this album as a fan of Ian rather than Noel Coward (and admittedly still don't really have a good idea of who the man is). So in terms of Ian's singing, I like it a lot. He has a wonderfully dextrous voice and a clear tone, complemented by Jeffrey Tate on the piano and the soprano Sophie Daneman for several numbers.
Generally I find myself unable to appreciate the work of classical singers who do crossover albums, but Ian is an exception. It has been said elsewhere that he may lack a robustness in his voice, but here in fact, one would not wish for an overpowering tenor. He isn't at all overblown, unlike many other singers in crossovers. The lightness of his voice lends a kind of intimacy to these recordings, as if he were singing in a café or an at-home musical evening.
The material is, of course, a departure from Schubert, &c., but he handles it well. However, I do think that he has a better emotional feel for the 19th century German romanticists and the 20th century British classical composers (i.e. Britten). This recording is pleasant but it seems to me to lack the emotional depth of Ian's Schumann in particular - a perceived deficiency that might lie with the composer Coward rather than the performer.
I like to listen to this CD when I want to listen to Ian sing, but am not in the mood for his more serious/depressing recordings (a la Schubert & Britten). The lyrics are pretty inane, the same goes for the songs themselves - melodically speaking - but Ian makes them special. So four stars.
Coward the Composer, Quite Charming without the Camp.......2002-11-18
I love this CD. I have a collection of Noel Coward performing his major songs, and I found it entertaining, but frankly I was never much drawn to it after the initial novelty wore off. I never really appreciated Coward as a composer because his campy persona and limited vocal talents got in the way. I bought this CD as a gift for a big Coward fan, and I am ashamed that I have not yet given it to him because I enjoy it so much. Bostridge is a really fine tenor. The beauty and subtlety of his voice bring out the beauty of Coward's melodies and the wit of his lyrics without overwhelming them with a heavy and mannered "classical" style, which is the bane of most such "crossover" CDs. The CD is also beautifully recorded. Outstanding songs include "I Travel Alone," "Parisian Pierrot," "World Weary," and "A Room with a View." Bostridge also has just the right touch with the goofier songs like "Mad Dogs and Englishmen," "Something to do with Spring," and "Any Little Fish." I highly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys witty cabaret songs in general and Coward in particular. It really did give me a new and greater appreciation of Coward's considerable talents as a composer.
COWARD'S THEATRE SONGS.......2002-09-30
Sometimes musical artists should NOT attempt cross-over albums. I am a huge fan of Jessye Norman, Leontyne Price and Joan Sutherland, but their ventures into "popular" music were, at best, misguided and, at worst, heavy-handed and pretentious. Although Ian Bostridge does not embarrass himself, there is no question that he should stick to more "serious" music and leave musical comedy to other singers.
The theatre songs of Noel Coward take a very different kind of approach than Bostridge gives them. They need an actor who happens to be singing. Except for a very few of the songs on this CD (written by Coward for operettas instead of musical comedies) Bostridge's approach is absolutely without any character. All of these numbers are impeccably sung by Bostridge, but none of them are ever really acted. Coward's songs MUST be acted whether they were written in a comic or sentimental vein. The result is another misfired cross-over album in what otherwise is a splendid career.

Poorly edited CD; dishonest?.......2001-08-26
Very poorly-edited CD; I can't believe that it was "Released by arrangement with the Gerorge Gershwin Estate", as the booklet states. Consider the following: Upon playing the CD for the first time, I noticed that Track 4, "Grievin' For You" was actually was the same as track 11, "Make Believe". Naturally, I was quite surprised that this error wasn't caught pre-release. I was also disappointed, since I was looking forward to hearing "Grievin' for you". Also, in the booklet it states that track 14, "An American in Paris", was recorded in 1928. I was hoping to hear a historical recording when in fact the track contains a stereo recording of the piece, and is thus in all likelihood a post-1957 recording. I wrote to the publisher of the CD, TKOMagnum, but have not received a response. Let the buyer beware!

Really Great Blues.......2006-04-29
I guess evryone has a different idea of what good blues are. I am 70 years old & have been listening to, & enjoying blues since I was 14 when a friend from louisiana introduced me to blues with Brownie McGhee singing "Diamond Ring". I am one of those people who think that white people cannot play, or sing blues. It seems as though most try to sound like the Rolling Stones or such. I buy a lot of blues music by people I have never heard of & am almost always disappointed. I bought this CD last week after hearing 3 30 second snippets of it and am not disappointed, this guy is great. I love this CD
Deep, sexy blues.......2005-06-16
There was a time when the blues had a sexy rhythm that made the girls go crazy. I thought those days were long past until I heard Paul Oscher's "Alone With The Blues". Watch out ladies! This man's got the feeling!
This is what blues should sound like!!!.......2004-09-01
Upon the recommendation of a member of my Yahoo Blues Group went to Paul's site and ordered this CD "Alone With The Blues". I was totally blown away by the harmonica playing on this. You can actually hear and even feel the blues resonating from every note played. The CD is just what the title and the cover indicated; him playing alone by himself. Many artists today; even blues artists think they need a 10 piece group to sound good. Paul proves that you definitely do not. DO NOT MISS THIS CD!!

Majestic Harmonica.......2004-07-02
I first saw Paul Oscher play harmonica with Muddy Waters at the Gaslite cafe in New York's Greenwich Village, back in 1971. I remember the crowd going wild after every solo. He had a tone so deep, we went back two nights in a row.
Last night, I was reading Living Blues magazine and there it was - an ad for "Alone With The Blues" by Paul Oscher on Electro-Fi. I quickly ordered the cd ... and what a joy it is.
Opening up with "Walkin'", a mid-tempo instrumental, the chromatic harmonica sounds like a complete horn section. The vocals have a beautiful, down home feel. You don't get the overblowing of notes and histrionic vocals of many of his contemporaries. Oscher leaves space, going for the "less is more" approach. Dig the lonesome sound of "Standing At The Crossroads".
At times, "Alone With The Blues" sounds as if he's backed by a full band. But it's only Mr. Oscher, alone, with echoes of Big Walter, Cotton - intertwined with Oscher's own original style. Pay attention to the standout slide-and-vocal on "Blues and Trouble" that is just riveting.
Paul Oscher is a multi-instrumentalist who brings a gut-bucket-in-the-alley sound to every song on this CD. Harp players will find so many different positions utilizied by Oscher - and won't be disappointed.
So get this CD, turn down the lights, and dig: because this is THE REAL DEAL.
Paul Oscher "alone with the blues".......2004-07-01
This is a fine cd from former Muddy Waters band member. It covers a wide range of blues styles and showcases Oscher as blues singer, songwriter and multi- instrumentalist on the harmonica ,guitar, piano and melodica, Oscher plays the melodica through a leslie speaker and it sounds like a hammond organ. The whole cd is deep, deep blues of the kind that you dont hear enough of theses days. Oscher learned his lessons well. One of the best real blues cds I've heard in a long time.

Customer Reviews:
Amazing Collection of Live Tracks.......2005-06-14
This double-CD set contains 19 previously unreleased numbers, one of which, All the Little Things, is included in both live and studio versions. Most of this collection was recorded the California Tour of Summer 2003 (a fantastic tour, by the way) with a couple of exceptions, along with the studio version of Little Things to end the second CD. Something for everyone here, Blues, Funk, Pop, ballads.
Nina is perhaps one of the best singers alive today, certainly one of the most under-recognized. She is not only an amazing singer but she has the ability to add her voice as another instrument - check out Summertime and Elevator! Her songwriting talents are showcased on this collection, and I think that once you hear this double-CD set you'll be hopping over to her website to find out where she is playing! These discs will definitely keep finding their way into your CD player.
I can't believe nobody has reviewed this title yet........2004-06-20
I cannot fathom a more perfect voice. Nina Storey can take your breath away, leave your heart pounding, or drift you into a hazy, ecstasy-filled torpor as you drift, drift, drift away with her voice. I picked up the rest of Nina's Work, but nothing compares to this collection from her live performance in Dallas. You can just imagine the presence this woman has on stage. From the distorted bass background in 'All The Little Things' to the lullaby of 'Summertime' Nina delivers a powerful, addicting series of vocals that will have you coming back for more, and more, and more . . .
