4 out of 5 stars An Acoustic Gem.......2007-07-25

The late, great Chris Whitley was and is, quite simply, THE MAN! I took his passing in '05 hard and, I'm willing to bet, so did most of his loyal fans. He never sold a lot of records and his live shows were not always well-attended but his soul and spirit were in full-effect on every record he put out and evident at every performance he gave. He was a skinny, white-boy playing West Texas blues with the heart & passion of an old-school black bluesman. And he did it like no one else. Creating a sound entirely his own.

His cd, "Weed" was put out in 2004 and was only available through Messenger Records' web site or at the merch table at one of his live gigs. It was recorded in a bathroom at his girlfriend's house on mini-disc. Just a man and his guitar. These are spare re-recordings of previously released material from a ten-year period, '86-'96. The strength of his compositions are still present as are his intriguing lyrics and seductive vocals. The only thing that prevents me from giving this release a full 5-star review is the lack of sheer aggression and anger found in his guitar playing and vocal delivery on some of the original recordings. But for a more subdued, acoustic rendering of some of his best work, this is the disc to pick up.

5 out of 5 stars bare-bones and revealing.......2007-07-14

These raw versions of Chris' songs show you point blank just how deep his artistry was. Recorded in a bathroom I guess, they sometimes suffer rough-edged recording flaws, but his brilliance shines right through.

Maybe it shines even brighter because of it.

I am deeply moved by the power and raw instinct of everything he plays and sings here. His voice and guitar are revealed and laid before you like they should be heard. I can't believe he's gone. We are all the less for it. Pick this CD up and hear why.

5 out of 5 stars Acoustic versions of some of the best music of the 1990's.......2007-06-03

So Sweet! Chris Whitley's first three albums stand next to Uncle Tupelo's albums as the best music made during the 1990's (not opinion, just fact). Released in 2003, "Weed" is composed of newly recorded, acoustic versions of a number of the songs from these albums. The version of "Power Down", leading off the album, is itself worth the price of the whole disc. He does a chilling version of "Phone Call from Leavenworth" on his National Steel guitar that lets you feel the prison walls closing in. "Narcotic Prayer" seems to float over the room - matching the lyrics with a light touch that contrasts to the electric version on his 3rd album, "Din of Ecstasy".

All in all, this was an unexpected treat. In spite of the love I have for Whitley's first three albums, his later efforts have not been as personally satisfying for me (although I bought them all just to thank him for the first three). But for a lover of acoustic music (blues and otherwise), the versions of his songs on "Weed" lay bare his melodies and lyrics for the listener in a way much more intimate than the originals. His light is one (like Duane Allman, Jimi Hendrix, SRV before him) that was snuffed out way too soon.

1 out of 5 stars I fell for the other reviews.......2007-01-09

Save your money - don't bother with this one. It's pure tripe from beginning to end. Awful, just awful. Couldn't listen to a whole cut all the way through.

4 out of 5 stars great acoustic versions of Whitley classics.......2005-03-31

Texas-blues ballad writer Chris Whitley once again takes out his National steel guitar and gritty, distinctive voice with very nice results. Weed, released in late 2004 along with War Crime Blues, features acoustic versions of previously release originals from the albums Din of Ecstasy (1995), Terra Incognita (1997), and his brilliant debut, Living with the Law (1991). Born in Texas and raised in New York City, Whitley has been living in Europe for the last few years where he has been able to hone in on his raw, original blues sound. Speaking of raw, Weed was recorded in Whitley's bathroom on a two track minidisc player. (1998's Dirt Floor was recorded in a barn.)

Chris' style of bare-bones, one-take blues has never been more apparent than with Weed. The songs are beautifully written, drawing on everything from love and heartbreak to late parties and a phone call from prison. Simple songs from a deep and complex man make this album unique and highly entertaining, especially when heard in contrast to their blues-band versions from the earlier albums. His poetry is apparent in the track "Narcotic Prayer," "If I found her breathing, how could I adjust?/ Should I see her bleeding, calling me in trust?" Whitley's Weed is a very nice, calm album that showcases his songwriting and introspective voice. Go get this album if you liked Nick Drake's naked swansong, Pink Moon, or the southern blues of Taj Mahal.

Call it modern back-porch music or old-timey tunes for the new millennium. Canada's Nathan culls the keening quality of early country and tempers it with a 21st century sensibility. Like fellow Canadians the Be Good Tanyas, their Po' Girl offshoot, and Portland, Oregon's Amelia, Nathan offers twangy, tremulous female vocals, an array of banjos, fiddles, and guitars, brushed drums, and a sense of quiet calm even at their most lively. Jimson Weed stays steadfastly true to this manifesto. Singer/songwriter Keri McTighe's warble is part Dolly Parton, part Sylvia Tyson, and she often gives voice to darkly rural sentiments. Like those other members of the "folk-rock nouveau" mini-movement, Nathan displays a gift for melody and harmonies of the haunting mountain-music variety, accompanied by country instrumentation, carnival grooves, and train beats--making music for the ages. --Michael Ross

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Canadian Alt-Country.......2007-02-12

My wife bought this album for me on a lark having never heard of them before, but enjoying the samples she listened to at the store - and it was a great find. They have a unique sound all their own, but if I had to compare them to someone it would probably be Kasey Chambers. The songwriting is superb - lyrics that are fun and interesting combined with melodies that are new but sound instantly recognizable. The general sound is alt-country but a bit more twisted than most alt-country artists. I have a long commute to work and so I end up listening to a lot of music and this is one I never get tired of. Buy it and prepare to get addicted!

5 out of 5 stars From Red River to Antarctia.......2006-03-30

Five long months ago before I departed on my first trip to Antarctica I picked up an album by the Winnipeg band, Nathan. I just had time to listen to it briefly before I left on my long journey towards the lure of the South pole. Fortunately for me
(and my Russian comrads)I took along this piece of pure aurel magic. Antarctica has been decribed as otherworldly and with Nathan and their album Jimson Weed on the Stereo the other-world had a soundtrack . We laughed at the prose and wit in which they tie the songs together and in the vastness of that lonely world of ice and snow we felt the warmth of such beautiful voices and with strings attached played air guitar to the many fasinating arangements. Nathan nailed this album, i doubt that it could have been any better and i'm buying more than a few copies to send to Russia so they will stop bothering me... When a band can transcend cultures and continents you know you have a winner, can't wait for the next one, maybe just in time for my Arctic journey, can only hope.

5 out of 5 stars How can an album be almost perfect?.......2005-07-09

To review an album, you must listen to it at least a dozen times. If you can do this you must like the album, or it would grate on your nerves.I have listened to this album at least 50 times and it keeps getting better. What can I say about a band that works so well? Start with stellar writing, great arrangements, wonderful vocals and harmony, very tight and talented musicianship, and what do you have?..... NATHAN. You know when you listen to a CD from a band you enjoy but you skip over the "lesser songs" that does not happen with this CD, every song is well crafted. I still have favorites but I don't skip over other songs to get to them. I very much enjoyed their first album also, but I find it easier to relate to this one.

5 out of 5 stars Nathan - The Next Big Thing?.......2004-10-04

I'm from Nathan's hometown, Winnipeg and have been a fan for some time. So although I may be accused of being biased, I haven't been a booster of local acts before or even been tuned into the local music scene. I just happened to hear a Nathan song on the radio one day a few years ago and found myself compelled to find a CD and a performance.

There is no filler on a Nathan CD. Every song is beautifully woven together with delicate, soulful harmonies, catchy melodies and intriguing instrumentals including wailing theramin, banjo, tuba (on Stranger, their first CD), accordian, dobro, bass, acoustic guitar, electric guitar or any other instrument that helps the cause.

Nathan songs shine even brighter when you pull out the liner notes and examine the lyrics. It's then you see deep metaphors and shades of meaning - very smart, satisfying poetry.

Though the band members are young whipper snappers (compared to me) who have just quit their day jobs and been picked up by a label, they sound like old souls and old pros. In other words, there's mismatch between their talent and their recognition.

My prediction is that the recognition will catch up to the talent. Maybe someday, the cover of The Rolling Stone? Or a spot on Austin City Limits? Or a Grammy? Or a membership in the Opry? Seriously, Nathan deserves a spot in the majors and could be the next big thing....

This mouth-watering recipe may be the tastiest to come out of Perry's Black Ark kitchen-studio. Is the aging Upsetter truly mad these days, or just playing it his way? All one can say for sure is that he's working it and definitely getting paid. Most fans, though, prefer classic treats like this reissued early set, with the pre-hip hop music giant in relatively sound mind, freestyling his unique brand of uninhibited mind-science and down home rules for clean living over tracks of his own creation. Lee Perry is the original B-boy, one of the first to mic-toast over a dub track at a sound system dance. After he decided to come indoors and put it all down on wax, he was the first to scratch a record and press the sounds of daily life--ringing bells, barking dogs--into service of his muse. --Elena Oumano

Album Description

Arguably his finest album, originally released in the late '70s. The full title is 'Roat Fish, Collie Weed & Corn Bread'. 10 tracks.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I hope you overstand.......2005-06-28

Shot through with genius and dementia, the murky sound quality only adds to the hallucinogenic, dream-like quality of this classic from Perry's Black Ark era. Features the mooing cow, crying baby and ascending jet sounds as musical elements (as opposed to sound effects). Complaints about the sound quality miss the point. From what I've read about Mr. Perry in his Black Ark period, the murkiness may have been intentional.

5 out of 5 stars Someone PLEASE find the master tapes..........2004-10-19

I'm giving this release of ROAST FISH, COLLIE WEED, AND CORN BREAD five stars because it's Lee Perry's tour-de-force...but the sound quality is just plain lousy. The tracks you hear on the CD come directly from an old vinyl copy of the album which was obviously in less than mint condition. Is this the best we can do for a genius like Scratch? ROAST FISH deserves a lavish re-release like the Congos' first album. Where are the master tapes?!
"Roast Fish and Corn Bread" is a great track, but it's the one that everybody and his brother talks about(tantamount to having a discussion about the Rolling Stones and saying, "'(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction' is awesome!"). The real standouts here are the playful "Favourite Dish"(in which Perry repeats the crying-baby effect he first used in the awe-inspiring "People Funny Boy"), the saxaphone-driven "Big Neck Police"(with gorgeous backing vocals by the Full Experience), and--best of all--the paranoid, menacing "Evil Tongues". You can hear the anguish in Perry's gravelly voice as he sings the chorus, and a single withering note from Earl "Chinna" Smith's guitar drones on and on and on. Amazing.

5 out of 5 stars PERRY AT HIS TRIPPED-OUT BEST.......2004-06-23

I love the stuff that came out of Black Ark studios in the 70's. "Scratch" made a lot of wonderful madness during that period. This album is one of those wonderfully mad recordings. It's very spacey and out there while still being heavy reggae. From the jazzy sax on 'soul fire' to the otherworldly title song, it's enjoyable. So grab a blunt and pop it in!

3 out of 5 stars Great music, horrible mastering.......2003-01-28

The domestically available vinyl and CD versions of this would-be-great album are marred by uneven pitch, possibly the result of a problem w/the mastering of the original tapes. The songs are great but difficult to listen to if you're sensitive to these things...the pitch wanders up and down in a maddening cycle, not flat, now sharp, occasionally true. This is a shame as the songs are AWESOME, great productions compromised somewhere down the production line on their way to your home stereo...

5 out of 5 stars Soul Fire.......2002-09-15

I recently found a mix of this tune on a "Reggae Greats" compilation casette in the bargain bin at a chain record store. The version on the tape has been mixed differently than any other version I've been able to find. The speaking in the intro has been mixed much farther up front. The first time I heard it I practically drove off the road. The version from this album just doesn't sound as good, and this new mix really brings out the greatness of the song. This tune is truly a serious piece of work, and has more integrity in all of its lo-fi glory than almost anything else I've heard on the radio over the last ten years. When he sings: "we aint go no water". You can really feel that fire....Lee Perry is a genius.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Timeless songs fairly well interpreted.......2007-01-10

Given that Foster's original lyrics would often be found offensive today, the performers on this recording took broad license to change them. It mostly works. The arrangements are clean and skillful but I wouldn't call them inspired or brilliant. The great thing about this recording is its appeal to multiple generations. The songs are familiar to me and my 80 year old parents and my 5 year old won't stop playing it.

5 out of 5 stars great stuff........2006-12-26

i have a half-dozen discs of stephen foster songs, and this is by far the most enjoyable. these are modern acoustic versions that breathe new life into these old, old songs. I am glad this is not just another recital of his songs where an attempt is made to be true to the sound of the 19th century. that has been done and done and done to death. the modern folk form employeed here makes these songs fresh again. all throughout this is a beautiful cd. one of the cds i have listened to more often and with more enjoyment than 98% of the other cds i've heard in the last 5 years.

4 out of 5 stars Hard to decide between 4 and 5 stars..........2006-10-06

Two years after I bought it, this CD sees a lot of time in my player, and the liner notes alone are worth the price.

I bought it in Bardstown Kentucky at My Old Kentucky Home State Park.

Foster's music lends itself to these interpretations, and these arrangements are quite well done, the three earlier reviews (the 2 from "a music fan" and the one who decried the anchronistic arrangements) notwithstanding.

In many respects, this is a better CD than 2004's "Beautiful Dreamer - The Songs of Stephen Foster."

I heartily recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Foster music.......2004-10-15

This CD brings back all the childhood memories that Foster's music invokes. It made me want to get up and dance when I listened to "Oh, Susanna" and "Camptown Races" and I felt the need to sing along with "Old Folks at Home." The artistry is as superb as we have come to expect from Joe Weed. I love this CD and enjoyed the historical information that is included.

4 out of 5 stars The Measure of a Songwriter..........2003-03-07

...is how well his songs outlast their original era and context. That Stephen Foster was probably America's first important songwriter is inarguable. Yet it would be a mistake to _leave_ his songs there. This CD, to my mind, proves that his compositions have staying power. Bluegrass/folk treatments are a natural medium for Foster's songs, and the performances here are assured and approachable. Forget about "anachronism" as another reviewer put it. It would do Stephen Foster even more injustice to abandon his songs to the style of light opera or "parlor" music. They're better than that, and this disc proves it.

5 out of 5 stars Rare glimpse of Melba unfettered by the acoustic horn. .......2007-04-15

Several of these selections give modern opera lovers their only clear vocal image of Melba. Collectors of ancient opera recordings are, through years of familiarity, capable of making allowances for the sounds on the acoustic records. However; most listeners cannot: because of this the few electrical recordings on this CD offer the only viable chance for most of us to hear Melba in something like her natural sound. Of special interest is her haunting singing of the Willow Song - Melba's style founded on the Marchesi method of breath support gives a supernatural quality, an eerie and haunting other-worldliness to this most affecting of simple melodies. People claimed Melba was not a great actress but this gives the lie to that. Listen in particular to the non-pareil pianissimo, the beautiful tone projected and sustained without any apparent effort. No one living can sing like this. Moreover, Melba achieves her effects on a listener through a living melody rather than the declamatory or push and pull vocalism we hear today from even our best vocalists. Melba's extraordinary aliveness, kept on leash and which she flaunts like a Goddess snapping off bolts of lightning, suggests an undaunted will and irrepresible energy . She was certainly a true Queen of Opera.
The Naxos issue is the fourth and last in a series, the others are all from acoustic horns, and should be purchased only by knowledgeable collectors. Melba was born the year the American Civil War began - thus these recordings made in the twenties when she was in her sixties offer further proof of just how remarkably well-schooled a singer she was.

5 out of 5 stars Fare thee well!.......2004-07-07

Thanks to splendid reissues such as this, Dame Nellie Melba, once the most celebrated soprano in the world, is still a presence for C21st century listeners.

Collected here, and completing the Naxos series reissuing her EMI recordings, is everything she recorded between 1921 and 1926. As is well known, the opportunity was taken, soon after the introduction of the electrical recording process, to record her farewell appearance at Covent Garden in June 1926. Two acts of "La Boheme"and the last act of "Otello" were performed. Of the many 78 sides made on location that proved to be technically acceptable, Melba would allow only three to be issued in her lifetime - one of which was her farewell speech. Well, they are all assembled here, allowing us to hear her with some of her younger compatriot Australians whose careers she promoted.

Six months later, she initiated a final recording session to help forward the career of one of them, the 26 year old baritone John Brownlee. "It was for her a trying afternoon," wrote producer Fred Gaiberg in his memoirs.

These final four sides are here too, Melba's only studio electrically recorded items, two of them in duet with John Brownlee. I urge all readers, even those who might have written Melba off as a famous singer stunning in performance but luckless in recording studios to go first to Track 17 on this CD. Hear the voice, rock steady, still able to provide dynamic contrasts and with an occasional gleam on it, in perfect ensemble with John Brownlee, and unimpeded by fierce surface hiss. For some reason the other three items from this final recording session are not nearly as vivid.

Restoration engineer Ward Marston, with help from various sources, compiled this invaluable 70 minute CD.

This is the old school cash money .This ranks as one of the olders one.I only liked 1 song at first which is alphabet bitches. That song has a tight pimp beat, even though its old. I could see Too short on that song. After a while I like other songs like still smokin(smooth),boot up nigga(hard),splift out(smooth),#7(tight beat). This sounds completly differnet from what your used to if you only heard the new cash money.

4 out of 5 stars Just a few thoughts.......2006-03-18

I purchased the self-titled Espers album a few weeks ago, and found myself in love with it from the first play. I had to have the Weed Tree. I won't bother typing a lot, since the guy above me seemed to have reviewed the album thoroughly. Espers really has a mature, enlightened aspect to their music. They seem to be very comfortable with their style, and they pull it off so well. I listen to them and can't help but feel like I'm sitting in a meadow, perhaps in times of knights and plagues. And no, I do not live-action-role-play. The music really pulls emotions from you, and never fails to transport you to another world.

Favorite songs on this one? Black is the Color is amazingly peaceful. Or maybe I'm just a sucker for the man and woman harmonizing their vocals, because I also adore the cover of Flaming Telepath. Overall, you can't go wrong with this cd, unless you're expecting something adrenaline-logged. Think, smoke a cigarette, look out the window, and listen to Espers!!

from DMG:

It's safe to say of the Espers that if their albums were recorded 30 years ago and released in a small vinyl edition they'd trade hands among collectors for absurd sums and be heralded as lost masterpieces. Their astonishing 2004 debut has been taken as an instant classic among connoisseurs of yesteryear's creative folk music. As torchbearers nursing timeless traditions of melody, harmony, mood, and wistful words, it's almost necessary for their artistic health to balance their own songwriting with interpretations of masterworks from the traditions they can trace themselves back to. So all is right with the universe now that we have Espers album no. 2 with 6 stunning cover songs from Bert Jansch ("Rosemary Lane"), Durutti Column ("Tomorrow"), The Famous Jug Band ("Black is the Color"), Nico ("Afraid"), Michael Hurley ("Blue Mountain"), and Blue Oyster Cult ("Flaming Telepaths"), topped off with a new gem from the group's own songbook that hints of extraordinary things to come on their next album of originals currently being created. Having expanded their lineup and mastered their craft from extensive touring, Espers has become an exquisite organism ready to gracefully dance through such a diverse program as if it were simply blissful-and-tender-business-as-usual. It's fitting they've chosen not only a Nico tune to reinvent, but one of Nico's prettiest; Espers often hovers at the edge of Nico's fatalistic melancholy, but rarely sink into its depths. Meg Baird's angelic vocals strike a perfect balance between the wafts of afternoon bloom and the cold dewdrops of late-night wilt. Instead of sparse piano and distant viola, Espers have layered acoustic guitar, cello, harmonium, tuned percussion, and faint harmony vocals to amplify both the lush optimism and the acquiescent sadness of the Nico/Cale creation. Just like their self-titled debut, the range of emotions and musical intensities througout The Weed Tree create an immersive and complete experience of exiting the cold banalities of everyday life and entering an idyllic plane of languor, and exquisitely slow, but blistering guitar, cello, and synth solos erupt in the Blue Oyser Cult tune to give the album a passionate climax that sets the delicate acoustic guitar and vocals of the final track in breathtaking relief. The spacy 70s vibe and analog synth of this 10-minute excursion and other pieces here reveal the essence of Espers as an inclusive and expansive band (now a sextet with a bit more percussion and keyboards compared to the original core trio of Baird, Brooke Sietinsons, and Greg Weeks) rooted in vintage dreamy prog and psychedelia as much as the hazy, taciturn, lilting acoustic folk sound that permeates the musical surface. I was completely enraptured by this disc from the first listen and I've barely been able to take it out of my CD player since! Another instant classic for Espers that will nourish gentle and patient souls for decades. I trust that someday a few inspired young people will wind up pooling their instrumental and vocal crafts to make an album of special cover songs that will honor an Espers original the way Espers have honored these artists and the infinite circle will remain unbroken.

5 out of 5 stars Waltz of the Whippoorwill.......2007-02-20

I bought this years ago as a cassette tape and loved it but misplaced it during a move. It resurfaced recently and I played it again, to find that I love it even more than I did 20 yrs ago. Joe Weed is an absolute genius- all the pieces are wonderful and I still get tears in my eyes when I hear the title piece because it's so beautiful. FABULOUS CD!

    5 out of 5 stars Fussy Infant.......2003-02-11

Everyone has heard of the saying "music soothes the savage beast". This holds true with our little baby boy.

My 9 month old boy instantly became a calm happy baby when I first popped this CD in when he got fussy. 6 months later, it magically turns him into a happy baby boy.

What IS it that puts him at ease? Mandolin? I don't know. I have tried other types of relaxing music, but this CD works instantly everytime. His mood changes within 10 seconds and I can usually get him to start giggling and acting like his usual self.

He has a few extra favorite where he will get excited about when it comes on, but all the songs work.

This CD is my livesaver. I have had to buy a CD for both my cars, our boombox and our home stereo system. WALTZ of the Whippoorill has saved us and made our baby even happier

    5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful surprise.......2000-10-18

"Waltz of the Whip-poor-will" is a real delight, kind of like a cool breeze on a warm summer day. As an avid birder and an acoustic music fan, this CD is a two-run homer. I never thought of chickadees singing a polka or whip-poor-will's waltzing, but it all seems so natural now!

This CD's flavor is mellow-acoustic, with touches of Celtic (before it was cool), jazzgrass, and even blues. Joe Weed (where are you now?) plays the fiddle, guitar, mandolin, and viola beautifully, and is joined by master talents Todd Phillips (on bass) and David Grisman (mandolin, of course) on several tracks. Stunning quality throughout.

If you enjoy innovative acoustic music, you'll love "Waltz of the Whip-poor-will." To quote Darol Anger's comments in the liner notes: "Joe Weed's Waltz of the Whippoorwill is some sweet, sweet acoustic dream- if you hung this music in your kitchen window it'd make rainbows."

5 out of 5 stars a sound gem for many senses.......1999-07-25

charming bouncy clever fresh. Where did this come from and why hadn't I heard it about it before? It doesn't matter if it's not your style, every song is a pleasure. I've given it as a gift too and the comments I get are over the top appreciation. Check it out
