An excellent addition to any folk music library. Those with a love of music from Ireland and the Celtic harp will definitely enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Excellent.......2006-12-30

I heard so much about the Chieftans, so I thought I would pick up a cd by them. I'm really glad this was my first Chieftans cd. It's very well done, and it's got some great material on it. I recommend this!

5 out of 5 stars The Green Fields Of America.......2006-08-30

This is a very fine example of Irish music by The Chieftains. The reason for me to buy this CD: it is recorded at the Utility Muffin Research Kitchen (UMRK)of Frank Zappa. And the track The Green Fields Of America was a favorite of Frank. The Chieftains came to visit Frank, but he just died. Kevin Conneff was singing The Green Fields at the grave. Sad but true.

5 out of 5 stars An Irish Classic.......2006-07-28

I do not claim to be an authority on Irish folk music, but if you are a fan of any sort of beautiful, haunting and memorable tunes, this cd will be one you'll play over and over again. The version of the famous "Wild Geese" is very moving and conjures images of ships sailing from the rugged coast of Ireland, perhaps never to return. "The Green Fields of America" was written during the tragic famine of the 19th century, as this ditty describes the story of a young Irishman who has decided to sail for America where a better life awaits him, yet regretting the fact he will never see his parents again. As I had some Irish ancestors who found themselves in this same situation more than 150 years ago, this song is very powerful to me. Other highlights on this album include the harp solo "Madame Cole" and also the last track, "A Lament for Limerick" which is really heartfelt and you can tell the musicians really believed in the notes they were playing. The accoustics on this album are really nice and the reverb adds a lot of atmosphere to each track. The liner notes are also very informative, providing the historical background to each song which is essential to understanding how and why the music was created. Overall, this cd is a wonderful exploration into the rich musical heritage of the Emerald Isle.

4 out of 5 stars A Superior Celtic Album. Not the best Chieftains or Harp CD.......2005-08-16

`The Celtic Harp' by The Chieftains is a very nice means by which this leading Irish music group can avoid simply performing `The Irish Song' over and over again. (While I do not subscribe to the theory that there is but one Irish song, done with different instruments and different beats and different dance steps, there is an undeniable sameness, similar to the sameness in all blues songs. While blues performers escape this sameness with their innovative guitar playing, this improvisational tradition has not reached the Emerald Isle yet).

And yet, this album seems to be a bit less successful than other recent Chieftain diversions such as their `Santiago' album with Basque music, `Irish Heartbeat' with Van Morrison, and `The Long Gray Veil' starring Sting and Mick and Van and a cast of thousands.

The album is subtitled `A Tribute to Edward Bunting' with contributions from the Belfast Harp Orchestra. But, checking the back of the album shows that the Harp Orchestra appears on only four of the twelve cuts, and, to my non-Irish ears, I do not hear the harp as the featured instrument on some of the tracks.

While I am not an expert on Celtic music, I am very fond of Robin Williamson's songs and music, and I find his Irish Harp work as good or better, or at least more interesting than what I find on this album. This may have a lot to do with Williamson's more interesting lyrics and stories, but the end result is the same. This may not be the best Irish harp album on the block.

The significance of Edward Bunting is that he was an Irish composer born in 1792, so this album is done on the bicentennary of his birth.

If you are a Chieftains fan, you must have this album. If you are a harp fan, this just may not be the best exemplar of Irish harp music, in spite of the fact that it is an enjoyable `Irish' album with excellent vocals on `The Green Hills of America' by Kevin Conneff.

This startling record begins with two sopranos and a gentle piano sounding for all the world like Enya singing Satie; two tracks later we have a hair-raising chorus and drum hurling curses upon iron (which makes the tools of work and war). It's all the work of Estonian composer Veljo Tormis, who uses simple, even primitive melodies and ancient folk poetry (perhaps too simple for some listeners, especially those who understand no Finnish or Estonian) with exciting, sometimes atonal but always accessible accompaniment for chorus and/or instruments. The results can be plaintive and calm or vigorous, even feral. The effect is rather like Orff's Carmina Burana with less symphonic glamour but more musical substance. The most entertaining piece on the disc is "The Bishop and the Pagan," which retells (in a way) the story of St. Henry, who was martyred on a frozen lake in 1158 by an angry peasant with an ax. An alto and two tenors sing a medieval Latin poem in praise of Henry to a very chantlike melody in parallel fifths; meanwhile, baritones and basses pound out (softly at first) an ancient Finnish lyric told from the peasant's point of view. (You can guess how things end up.) The highlight is when the Henry trio is reduced to a wordless on-pitch howling while the peasant's chant is at its strongest--followed by a surprisingly witty ending. Not coincidentally, the next piece on the record, "Litany to Thunder," depicts the sacrifice of an ox to the god of thunder and rain. Frankly, it's terrifying. --Matthew Westphal

4 out of 5 stars More primeval and minimalist than "Forgotten Peoples".......2007-05-20

Partly based upon previous experience with "Forgotten Peoples," and under the influence of other reviewers' enthusiasm, I purchsed "Litany to Thunder."

Portions of the work are rather like "Carmina Burana" as a previous reviewer indicated, and I also found some of it akin to another Orff work, namely the opera "Antigonae" or perhaps even Stravinsky's "Les Noces."

Nonetheless, although "Forgotten Peoples" was truly a major musical discovery for me (with very few drawbacks), I cannot say the same for "Litany to Thunder."

It's a fascinating work, but the first and last pieces on this disc are irritatingly repetitious. In spite of this, the novelties of the combined vocal/instrumental combinations in all of the music are very expressive of austere power, a constantly-shifting runic starkness with raw percussiveness, from near-lullabies to full-throttle timpani.

I'd say overall that it's worth buying, but it would not be my first choice for a Veljo Tormis disc. That would be "Forgotten Peoples."

    5 out of 5 stars Estonian Music.......2004-09-22

Why anyone would expect Tormis to sound like Arvo Part just because they are both Estonian is beyond me. No one is surprised that Steve Reich sounds nothing like Aaron Copland. If anything, Tormis' music is more "ethnically" Estonian than Part's, whose music is structured more after the Eastern Orthodox Church and his own unique "tintinnabuli" style. Tormis works in the area somewhere between the faithful recordings of an enthomusicologist like Alan Lomax, and a composer like Zoltan Kodaly (or Aaron Copland!) who took his inspiration from the native music of his country and added his own interpretation to it.

It would be unfortunate if anyone avoided this music out of a discomfort with so-called "Paganism" or "Shamanism." This music is valuable and needs to be heard. "Curse Upon Iron" especially is brilliantly imaginative. "The Lost Geese" achieves an almost hypnotic effect through the simple, repeated melodic line. I have had both songs running through my head since I heard them and it has not been unpleasant. The other works on the CD are memorable as well. This music is the real thing -- authentic and powerful.

    5 out of 5 stars fell beauty.......2003-07-25

One of the best classical CDs I have heard, ever! haunting and beautiful!

5 out of 5 stars To put it simply - Beautiful.......2003-02-07

I heard the song "How Can I Recognize my Home?" as I was flipping through different radio stations driving home last night. I've always loved the type of music that has a choir singing in Latin, especially the sopranos. It was so beautiful, I had to pull my car over and wait until the piece ended so I could write down the name and buy it as as soon as possible. I'm a filmmaker, and I could see this vision for my next movie accompanied by this piece. It was so beautifully sad; the emotion in this music is simply beyond words. I highly recommend that everyone listen to this music.

4 out of 5 stars Unbelievable 'Curse upon iron'.......2001-09-29

I heard (and saw) one piece from this CD performed live under direction of Kaljuste (but not with the same choir). It was just unbelievable and though I've heard many amazing choral performances before, this was just so different than anything else. 'Curse upon iron' by Veljo Tormis is obscure and brilliant at the same time, so one should listen to it without prejudice. Then it can be pure joy.

What a great album - fun arrangements, beautiful harmonies. This is one of the best Christmas albums I have heard or bought in a long time. "Gloria" will be one of my favorite tracks from now on. This album is all I expected and more. If you love Christmas music then you need this album.

    5 out of 5 stars Moving.......2006-09-23

I have been a progressive Hard rock heavy metal singer for over 19 years. I am a lover of harmonies no matter what instrument is doing them. I first heard this album (specifically the song African Gloria) while browsing in Yankee Candle's "Black forest" room. I was moved by that song and I still am when I hear the clip now. I immediately ordered it. What I can say is that these kids are not doing any easy tasks...I am a singer and I know what it takes to get the harmonies and dynamics what they are. I give them 2 thumbs up and urge them to always continue. Childrens choirs are wonderful and in my opinion spark a Holy part of us. 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars This cd is simply PERFECT!.......2005-12-13

My husband and I opened this cd and played it for the first time tonight. It was like hearing a choir of angels. I am dead serious when I say that I have NEVER heard voices as beautiful as the Von Trapp children. I have just orded two more of their cd's, and I intend to order everything they record. DO NOT miss this one. It is an absolute gem!

5 out of 5 stars The new first choice for the Irish Symphony........2005-03-22

This is a quick, easy review to write. I found a very cheap copy of this disc--even cheaper than Naxos' normal great price--so I decided to buy it; mostly for "With the Wild Geese" and "In Ireland," since I already have a good recording of the symphony. Well, the pleasant surprise here is, not only are these great recorded performances of the first two pieces, but this recording "blows the doors off" of the "old" Chandos recording of the Irish Symphony by Bryden Thompson and the Ulster Orchestra--which that label has released and re-released in multiple over-priced pairings a few times, and has now deleted--both in terms of performance and sound quality (I'm not sure what the other reviewer could've found lacking in the recording quality). For those of you who have been looking for the Thompson, stop looking and get the Naxos. My copy of the Thompson my very well be sitting in a used CD bin sometime soon. Naxos does it again!

4 out of 5 stars Great Irish flavored symphony.......2001-04-04

This is a pleasant, enjoyable collection of Harty's best work. The highlight is "An Irish Symphony", where various Irish tunes are interwoven into the music. I immediately was swept away into visions of the countryside of Ireland while listening to this disc, and was impressed at the ability of the music to create such a strong visual picture in my mind. Harty based most of these pieces on themes and stories from Irish history. Strong violin pieces throughout, and a definite Irish flavor. A nice listen for days when you want to escape the busy, hectic, work related stress. I was a little disappointed by the recording itself (it's fair), though for the price, Naxos continues to be a leader in the field. Thus, for such a low price, definitely buy this one if you enjoy classical music!

2 out of 5 stars Good group, disappointing collection.......2007-03-27

I'm sorry I cannot endorse the enthusiatic reviews below.

I bought this CD based on the Baltimore Consort's fine, fun collection of Renaissance French tunes (La Rocque 'n' Roll") and my own love of traditional Irish music. Perhaps I have been spoiled by too many Chieftains CDs, but I found only one tune here memorable, or even interesting: Custer LaRue's rendition of "Catty (sic) Magee" in Gaelic.

If you like the Baltimore Consort (and Custer LaRue), get another CD of theirs. If you like traditional Irish music, try another group.

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing music..........2006-12-20

Heard one song on the radio and I knew I had to have this cd. Firmly rooted in tradition, and yet surprisingly contemporary. You'll dance, you'll cry, the whole nine yards. What a gifted group of musicians! Wonderful.

      5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2005-01-25

This CD is a great collection of Celtic music -- period. The Baltimore Consort has never disappointed with any of their collections; from the strong start with "The Mad Buckgoat" through the final notes of "Billy From Bruff," this one maintains the trend. I strongly recommend that this be part of anyone's Celtic music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Rich, lively and mysterious!.......2002-11-29

This release by the Baltimore Consort is a real treat for both Celtic and Renaissance music lovers! These are some of the best improvisers in the business. Combining wind and stringed instruments of the Renaissance into an English "broken consort", these virtuoso musicians interpret old tunes for a new audience, offering delightful melodies, blown, bowed and sung, over sprightly plucked accompaniments. Their sound is distinctly their own: Renaissance-based, but with liberal touches of folk, bluegrass and even a bit of modern jazz. On this recording you'll hear both spirited and wistful Irish tunes, which were gathered together in published collections from 1724 through 1909. Chris Norman's inventiveness on wooden flute, whistles, bagpipes and bodhran gives an especially Celtic flavor to the renditions. The Baltimore Consort has recorded many CDs for the Dorian label, and all of them are terrific, but this one is my favorite. Not to be missed! Try also "A Trip to Killburn: Playford Tunes and their Ballads" for early hits from the English dance scene.

5 out of 5 stars captures a sense of historic Irish humor, sadness and melody.......2002-01-27

Having just returned from Ireland this last summer, I listened to this CD with renewned interest. I felt that the music reflected the history and music that I experienced on that lovely trip. The Baltimore Consort is a talented and senistive musical group that does an exceptional job of bringing this Irish spirit through in this CD. A culture's music is often a window into it's people's soul and if you listen to this CD I think you will have a glimpse of the grand Irish character.

5 out of 5 stars A German language pirates of Penzance.......2007-06-21

A very interesting piece. A lot of fun. The German version of pirates got my G&S hating friend all excited about the music. The voices are wonderful.

The bonus tracks are really funny. People singing opera that are not usually thought of as classical singers and vice-versa. Be warned there is a somewhat ribald ditty performed by Pinza. Well worth the price.

Music for My Little Friends is a CD for kids in the same way that non-sugary cereal becomes food for kids--if the box promises a prize inside. That is, aside from the title and whimsical cover art, there's not much kidlike about this release. Sir James, the virtuoso Irish flutist who's piped his way into gigs with the world's foremost orchestras and pop stars, is too sophisticated a musician to tone it down for small fries, so instead he gives them a gorgeous, accessible-to-all bundle of classical numbers. A few--Rota's "Five Easy Pieces," Gluck's "Dance of the Blessed Spirits," Debussy's "Mandoline," and Faure's "Berceuse"--positively flutter. Others, like Saint-Saëns's "The Swan" and Coulter's "Lament for the Wild Geese," snap hearts with their sad beauty. If Galway tips his cap to recorder-tooting tikes, it's with "Danny Boy" and Ibert's "The Little White Donkey"; still, the depth and distinguished interpretations of Galway, with backup by the London Mozart Players and pianist Phillip Moll, makes pulling off pure kid stuff impossible. No doubt Galway assembled Little Friends with the likely futile intention of chiseling away at every 4- to 12-year-old's resistance to classical music. What will grab hold, age or inclination aside, is a sense of the passion a single instrument can stir. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars For Once, a Unique Chant Collection.......2005-10-20

DAS GANSEBUCH has a clever image on the cover. A wolf, dressed as a cantor, is conducting a choir of geese while a fox is sneaking up to capture his evening meal. The image is from the cover of a collection of medieval church music that has come to be known as "The Goose Book" (Das Gansebuch in German). The music dates back to a church in Nuremberg just prior to the Reformation. Much of it is chant and while it is close to traditional Western (Gregorian) chant, it also sounds as if it is moving toward the hymn tradition that would develop in the near future. The collection also contains organ music, some of which is included on this disc.

With chant music being all the rage a few year ago, it is easy to say chant is chant and after listening to some of these recordings, it is difficult to tell some of them apart. However, the musical quality of this disc does distinguish this collection. The Scola Hungarica is composed of male vocalists who perform in a way that is fine musically and has a spiritual quality as well. Organ solos are dispersed throughout the collection, so one chant does not blend into the next. Since some of the pieces have never been recorded, it is likely that most of the music in this collection will not be familiar to most listeners, except perhaps to musicologists and those familiar with liturgical music, so for most of us, we are discovering something new. As I was listening to it, I couldn't help but think of Wagner's DIE MEISTERSINGER. The music is not Wagnerian by any stretch of the imagination, but it would have dated back to the days of Hans Sachs, the guilds, and the great musical tradition of that time in Nuremberg. Though the songs performed by the "mastersingers" were secular, the collection gives us a glimpse of the actual historic music that would have been a historic trait of the basis Wagner's opera.

This disc represents a small portion of the music in this collection, so lovers of chant and liturgical music have something to look forward to with future releases.
