This album is full of beautiful guitar and incredible vocals. This would definitely be an influence to the new generation of post punk/pop the likes of Bloc Party, Interpol & etc..... had they heard of them.

4 out of 5 stars Very Under-rated Band.......2006-09-02

This band to me through all its incarnations was very good, as a new wave band they had depth and some real serious musical chops. I thought they were a progressive rock band with a few new romantic hooks. My opinion is that the first 3 albums were great-not just the first two. The last album was very heavy but still good. Founder and guitarist Ian McNabbs's solo albums are well worth checking into as a sidenote.

2 out of 5 stars Buy their 2nd and 1st albums, and forget the rest.......2006-04-14

If you like the first three tracks on disc 1, then definitely check out their first two albums, 'For the Small Price of a Bicycle' and their self-titled album (in that order, i.m.o.). The songs on those albums are full of great couplets, and I'd rate each at 4 stars.

After that, they evolved on to a harder sound, but somehow it didn't take on me. (For reference, I thought Understanding Jane marked their mediocrity's start. And if you don't like Birds Fly or Hollow Horse, then you probably won't like their first albums the way I do.)

I haven't heard any of the songs on disc 2, and having owned a (different release of) disc 1, I'm not tempted to risk any more on their later work.

2 out of 5 stars Forgettable 80's rock........2006-02-04

I remember hearing Birds Fly on the radio one time, and I liked the song, so I decided to check out The Icicle Works. Well, finding any material by this band proved harder than I thought. I could not find anything whatsoever (this being in a time before ordering music over the internet was around...) but finally after a very extended period of on and off searching, I stumbled upon a copy of the Greatest Hits. I was very excited that I finally found something by this band, who I had built up in my mind over the long period of waiting and wondering what other great songs they may have. I was finally going to be exposed to the wonderful world of The Icicle Works. Maybe my high expectations of this band helped lead to the letdown feeling I had as each track floated past my ears, each one more embarrasing or dull than the last. I put this album on the shelf immediately after hearing it, dismissing it as just another forgettable 80's band with one or two decent songs. Well, here it is almost 10 years later, I happened to look at the CD again the other day and decided maybe I was in a different frame of mind now, more mature and refined in my musical tastes, and that I should give it another go. Well, listening to it again just solidified what I already knew the first time I heard it long ago. It still pretty much sucks. The vocals are cheesy as anything, and the Icicle Works had that problem where they desperately tried to change with the times, and did a half ass job at trying to blend in with what was popular. Very lame. Understanding Jane is a pretty good song, but the rest of it is borderline pukeworthy. There is a reason why this band never gained popularity in the 80's. They aren't good. Avoid this, it's for a very select few, and if you have any taste whatsoever, it's probably not you.

2 out of 5 stars Im confused.......2005-09-07

I dont understand these guys. I remember them as being new-wave romantics, with their most well known songs, Birds Fly, and Love is a Wonderful Color, which are probably their 2 best songs. Their first album, I admit was decent, but after hearing this, Im glad I didnt get anything else by them. I mean, c'mon. They shouldve just stuck to what they did best, instead of trying to do metal, blues, and reggae-ish(!) pop. Im sorry, alot of this comes off as half-baked, mediocre pop/rock at times coming off as a bad REO Speedwagon or some kind of AOR rock, like they lost their way somewhere. The only reason to buy this is for their 2 greatest hits. Its not just one disc, ITS 2. 2 DISCS OF MEDIOCRE MUSIC. Go get yourself a decent Echo and the Bunnymen record or something.

2 out of 5 stars Pray for an early thraw!.......2002-11-21

Unless you are a die hard, and I repeat, die hard fan, save your cash and get MP3 downloads of the three songs that are worth hearing. Big disappointment!

    5 out of 5 stars criminally neglected.......2003-09-13

Many bands from liverpool have been feted through the years. one that is sadly not remembered too often are the icicle works. one hit single in the us, two in the uk and then they were forgotten.
bicycle was their second album and was where they hit their stride. it is literate rock music with a connosieurs eye on the past.

mcnab was always a lyrical lyricist, sometimes powerful, sometimes delicate, sometimes political, always honest. the songs are clever but not clever clever like, for example, costello. musically the works are romantic and stirring without ever over-egging the pudding like the waterboys. inside their powerful arrangement the trio maintained a delicate touch.

here is an album without a weak track.long neglected begging to be loved.

5 out of 5 stars For less than the "Small Price of a Bicycle", pick this up!.......2002-05-03

Very well done rock music that does hold your complete attention from start to finish. It's all here: An Anthem-like, pulse-pounding album complete with touches of melancholy and dashes of mayhem, "Small Price of a Bicycle" certainly delivers on all of these fronts. It may just be The Icicle Works most complete and satisfying collection of songs. That being said, how can you go wrong?

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Album From The Icicle Works.......2001-01-26

I've been a fan of The Icicle Works since I first heard Birds Fly (Whisper To a Scream) in the early eighties. I believe that they are one of the two most underrated bands to have come from that decade. (The other being the Chameleons.) However, if you have never listened to The Icicle Works don't be put off because they are an eighties band. Their sound is not what one typically thinks of as the "eighties" sound. They are an incredible band whose first three albums are a treat for the ears. From the raw power of their self titled debut, to their third album, and what I believe was their masterpiece, If You Want To Defeat Your Enemy Sing His Song, this band never disappoints.

The Icicle Works second album, The Small Price Of A Bicycle, is another gem. It starts off with the unbelievably great Hollow Horse, one of their best songs ever, and ends with the emotionally powerful Conscience Of Kings. But that's not all. In between these two songs are eight unforgettable songs. Songs that I keep singing to myself long after the music has stopped. The Small Price Of A Bicycle creates its own atmosphere and maintains it throughout. This is an exquisite album and one that any Icicle Works fan will want to have in their collection.

4 out of 5 stars Eclectic Song Styling Hardly "Blind".......2002-05-03

If anything, Blind is a cumulative, highly varied listening experience encompassing all of the better stylistic elements from the first three Icicle Works albums, resulting in the what sounds like the group taking a musical "final exam", if you will. This album is a fitting send off to the "original" Icicle Works and highly satisfying listening experience to boot.

If genre-jumping scares you, no matter how ultimately cohesive the collection is simply because the songs are great, I would advise you to stick with less adventurous musical acts. For the rest of us, Blind is your man.

2 out of 5 stars The Blind Leading the Blind.......2001-01-12

This is not an awful album, but if i were in the process of whittling down my CD collection again---this would be one of the first to go. I bought this CD on the merit of one of their other albums and was mostly disappointed. Ringo Starr fans may want to pick this up, if for no other reason than to hear Ringo's son drum on this CD. After that, it will most likely become your favorite beer coaster.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless, beautiful music.......2005-06-16

I've loved this band since "Whisper to a Scream" was on the US charts in 1983. I was a teenager in the 80's, and have many favorite bands from that era, but the Icicle Works is one of the few that I still listen to all the time. It's a shame this gorgeous music was never more widely appreciated - it's brilliant! My favorites are "Love is a Wonderful Color," "Out of Season," "Chop the Tree" and "Waterline," which unfortunately is not included in this CD release. Amazingly I still have a cassette of the original US release which still plays, so for the time being I still have a copy of "Waterline"! All in all, this is a great album, and what good news to see that it's available on CD.

5 out of 5 stars Reaping the rich harvest!.......2004-06-02

What a joy it is for me to have this incredible record on CD at long, long last. I was about 14 when I first discovered this band in the mid 80's and by then they were on the wane, alas. I was able to buy the single of "Whisper to a Scream", which had the awesome "Cauldron of Love" as it's B-side and I was hooked!

A year or so later I met some people from Manchester in Brisbane and they had this first self titled album on tape. It was not labelled and so I had no idea at the time what album it was that these songs came from, nor did I really know what the names of the songs were. I subsequently lost this tape, or I wore it out, and I couldn't find this album on vinyl and wound up buying all their albums post the first one. It seems this particular release was out of print at the time?

Finally after all these years...nearly 17, I have been re-united with some of the most powerful and uplifting music of a generation. The fact that this band were a three piece - Ian Mcnabb - Gtr and Vocal/Keyboards, Chris Sharrock on drums, the bass players name escapes me - and made such a huge, soaring and defined sound, is a testimony to their musicianship. Tragic then that they were overlooked among the usual milieu of mediocrity during the early 80's and were left to sink back into relative obscurity without ever being fully realised or apreciated globally, as they well deserved.

This first album is by far the strongest but "Small Price of a Bicycle" has some legendary songs on it also. The music written here by Mcnabb is beautiful, powerful, erudite, literary and tender all at once. How many bands can you say that about? This guy really influenced my songwriting growing up and I am thankful that this diamond has been put on display once more for other generations of listeners to discover.

5 stars is too low... 10!

5 out of 5 stars Powerful and still relevent.......2003-02-14

The Icicle Works, brainchild of guitarist/songwriter Ian McNabb, had the blessing of a hugely successful single with which no doubt everyone is familiar ("Bird's Fly (Whisper To A Scream)"), and the curse of being lumped in with countless other bands during the early/mid-80's and dismissed as ultimately irrelevent. Either these groups were wrongly hailed the brilliant future (ask yourself, "Who but the most ardent 80's fan still listens to X, The Clash, Husker Du, the Violent Femmes, or any other band critics flipped over back then?"), or they were rightly relegated to the ash heap of sounding like "80's music" (again, pick your band, i.e. Culture Club, Ultravox, Echo & The Bunnymen) or being a "one hit wonder" (i.e. Men Without Hats). Of course, a few fulfilled their promise, at least commercially (i.e. R.E.M., INXS) if not critically, but most fit the 2 categories.

Neither of these apply to the Icicle Works, and particularly this their debut album. True, they were hailed for their powerful rhythms and McNabb's rich lyrical stories but after "Bird's Fly," they were forgotten...heck their second album wasn't even officially released in the US.

This album, however, still has it's place in my (and should have in your) CD player. It has stood the test of time because ultimately it is a very listenable album. How many albums have you purchased only to find out 1, maybe 2 or 3, songs were worth listening to repeatedly? Well, top to bottom, this album is made for repeated listening. Virtually every track has the intense rhythmic power of "Bird's Fly" without being repetitive, with "Chop the Tree," "As the Dragonfly Flies," and "Factory in the Desert" among the standouts. "Out of Season" is a touching and calming break from the action about a young man who's concluded he's met his future bride, asks his father for advice, and actually goes to ask for her father's permission! Quaint? Perhaps. But also timeless and very refreshing. The track listing on this version is the Canadian release in terms of the order of the songs and with "Reaping the Rich Harvest" replacing the rare US-only track "Waterline"--both are fine tracks (but find a copy of "Waterline" if you can, it's worth it).

I don't review a lot of albums. I only review those I believe should be in your collection because they have earned a place. The Icicle Works debut is one of those albums. You will enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Rides the Angst of the 80's.......2001-03-13

I haven't heard this music for ten years, and I still know all the music and lyrics by heart. I'm happy to finally find it on CD. Whisper to a Scream is the most popular tune from the album, lending an underground rebel tone we all know and love from the time. The tunes flow well together. You won't find yourself skipping around for the next great song. They're all full of intense drums and lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars Icicle Works - Rather Hot Debut Album.......2005-11-25

This is one of those Albums that you just hope doesn't end. Ian Mcnabb and crew perform with the Zest and Lust only found in most debut albums. "Whisper To A Scream (Bird's Fly)" had some air play on MTV in the Mid 80's. Mcnabb's songs had more of a positive attitude compared to other band from the time period. Later Albums had darker lyrics. I truly enjoyed this record. I wore out the cassette. They were more popular in their homeland, the U.K., then in the U.S.
