A lot of roads lead to Holly Brook (the singer, not a picnic destination). There's the hip-hop path, on which plenty of next-big-thing predictors got to know her through her collaboration with Fort Minor on The Rising Tide (her haunting chorus on "Where'd You Go" became an instant hit). Then there's the TV path, on which anybody with an ear for pop with staying power could have chosen between a couple of trails: both the NBC show Conviction and the WB series Related have featured her plaintive song "What I Wouldn't Give" off this, her debut. However you reach this piano-propelled 20-year-old star in the making, though, you won't be sorry. In the space of three songs, she recalls a decade's worth of singer-songwriters twice her age, and in an unhurried, stylish way that suggests she's doing it handily. A wrenching Tori Amos vibe weaves through "Again & Again," a track that recalls Shawn Colvin in equal measure; Suzanne Vega circa Solitude Standing surfaces in the vivid short verses of "Saturday"; and Sarah McLachlan seeps out over most of the vocals, but especially those on "Give It Up for You" and the lovely "Cellar Door." Joni Mitchell is the association Brook was going for--she cites her as influence number one--but comparisons with the more obvious mentors can't come as much of a bummer. The Joni connection may surface yet: Like Blood Like Honey is surely a trickle in a long career to come. --Tammy La GorceAlbum Description

A Darn Good Collection!.......2006-08-20
Don't just take our word for it - just get this collection!
Get the two-disc Buddy Holly collection instead.......2003-07-30
THE GOOD:
You get several of Holly's biggest hits here, on a single disc. These include That'll Be The Day, Words Of Love, Everyday, Peggy Sue, Not Fade Away, Maybe Baby, Oh Boy, It's So Easy, True Love Ways, and It Doesn't Matter Anymore. These songs are nothing short of excellent.
THE BAD:
WAY TOO MANY SONGS ARE MISSIG IN ACTION! Where are Fool's Paradise, Well All Right, Heartbeat, Wishing, Peggy Sue Got Married, Crying Waiting Hoping, Learning The Game, and What To Do? And why doesn't the CD come anywhere near filling the eighty minutes that will fit on a single disc?
OVERALL:
Don't bother with this CD unless you can find it in the budget bin. Take my advice and shell out the extra cash for the two-disc Buddy Holly Collection. It costs a little more, but it's worth it.

Buddy Holly appeared, burned like a flare for a year and a half, and disappeared, leaving behind nothing that wasn't heartfelt. Listening to "Peggy Sue," "Well...All Right," "Words of Love," and, especially, "Everyday" (voice, acoustic guitar, bass, celesta, knee-slaps...perfect!), one can't help but marvel at the lyrical openness, the taste, and the restraint of the music. Those are qualities generally learned over time, which, of course, was in short supply for Holly, who died five months into his 22nd year. Buddy Holly isn't generally thought of as a sage, but you can learn a lot from these songs. --Steven StolderCustomer Reviews:
If yer a Holly Fan, you NEED THIS COLLECTION!.......2007-06-08
If you haven't heard Buddy Holly, get this CD to see what you're missing and why he was taken WAY TOO EARLY in his life.
I feel cheated that he was........
Brilliant.......2007-05-11
Most fans know that a couple of months before his tragic and untimely death, Holly recorded a practice tape in his apartment, which was later found and the songs were dubbed and released as singles in the 1960s. What some people don't realize is that Norman Petty (Holly's ex-manager) did is own versions of these songs which, in my opinion, were much nearer to how the songs would have ended up had Buddy Holly lived to record them himself. These were also released in the 60s but weren't as popular as other versions. I first heard Petty's versions in the late 80s and have been trying to get them on CD ever since, so you can imagine my absolute delight, when these are the versions of What to Do; Crying, Waiting, Hoping; Peggy Sue Got Married and Learning the Game that came blasting out of my stereo upon playing this CD.
As well as some of the big hits, there are some of Holly's lesser known songs, which is the reason I purchased the CD. Yes, there are many brilliant songs that could have also been included here, but with someone with the talent that Buddy Holly had, I guess there's always going to be someone disappointed that a particular song isn't included.
In my opinion, this CD is a MUST HAVE for any Buddy Holly fan.
Why Re-dubbed Tracks?.......2007-04-17
Take it from a Buddy Holly freak..........2007-03-20
The music never fades away.......2007-03-07
The first few tracks of the first disc are covered with energy-driven rockabilly flair and Elvis-like vocals. From the instrumental "Holly Hop," "Rock Around With Ollie Vee," and a rendition of Chuck Berry's "Brown Eyed Handsome Man," Buddy gets the listener's feet tapping. However, it is his "That'll Be the Day" and "Peggy Sue" that many are familiar with. But listening to his "Words of Love," one can see that Holly was indeed with the Beatles when they recorded their version on Beatles For Sale as well as "Crying, Waiting, Hoping" on their BBC live recording.
The second disc sounds the most timeless. Several of the songs have a folk-like quality, "Well Alright" and "Wishing." "Think it Over" has the Buddy Holly hiccup-vocal trait and pounding piano solo. And "Early in the Morning" is the most soulful track on the album, where Holly sings praise with intense energy and execution. But the highlight of this disc thus far is the legendary and sentimental "True Love Ways."
In essence, Buddy Holly and his counterpart and influence, Elvis Presley, were the predecessors of rock and roll music, but Holly's contribution to this genre of music helped to influence young musicians. Hence this is definitely a collection that all rock and roll fans should own as well as those who enjoy listening to how popular music has evolved.

In a rock & roll world divided between guitar bands and synth bands, Morphine exist in a no-man's zone. The Boston trio has neither guitars nor keyboards and gets by with just drums, sax, and bass. In a pop universe where every singer, guitarist, and keyboardist instinctively goes to a higher note to attract attention, Morphine stay hunkered down low. Billy Conway's tuned drum kit, Dana Colley's baritone sax and Mark Sandman's baritone vocals and two-string slide bass all occupy the same low-end band of the sound spectrum. Morphine's odd configuration would have no more than novelty value if Sandman's songs weren't so good. This album's first single, "Honey White," for instance, rides the back of a fast, angular baritone riff to describe a pretty, young girl hooked on drugs. In the dark comedy of Sandman's rock-noir purr, Honey tells her dealer, "You'll get me when I'm old and wizened and not a day before that." He replies, "It won't be that long." The beat and the humor are essential, for otherwise these jazzy, elliptical mood pieces would become unbearably pretentious. The broken relationship described in "Radar" is a pop cliché, but it's given new life by the shattered R&B riff and by the nit-picking bickering of lines like "If I am guilty, so are you. It was March 4, 1982." In similar fashion, modern paranoia and sexual gamesmanship are nailed to the wall in "Sharks" and "Whisper" respectively. --Geoffrey HimesCustomer Reviews:

"Don't worry I'm not lookin at you, gorgeuos & dressed in blue".......2005-11-16
"Yes" is maybe the bands best album the other one would be "Cure for Pain". "Yes" has a definite feel to it. It plays kind of like a soundtrack. It sets the mood and tells you a story, though I have no idea what the story's about. It's an album you listen to from beginning to end. And it has one of the best beginnings with "Honey White", and one of the best endings with "Gone for Good", that I've ever heard on an album. "Gone for Good" Is one of the most touching songs I have ever heard. And maybe the best example of an elegy that I know of.
I seriously would recommend this album to ANYONE who is a fan of music. "Yes" is one of the coolest albums ever recorded. This is what Frank Sinatra would be listening to if he were still alive.
The music world suffered a great loss the day Mark Sandman died! But most will never no it.
Should call it "maybe".......2005-10-13
Pleasantly intoxicating..........2005-09-09
Yes is an excellent album - one of my all-time favorites. It's driven by the band's trademark sax - which seems to have a mind of its own. And Sandman's hypnotically playful vocals are dark and distorted - part spoken, part sung.
The songs are erratic and slurred. They feel pleasantly intoxicating - like a few too many gin and tonics. "Whisper" is lazy and seductive - like a Caribbean sunset. "I Had My Chance" sounds like the drunken ramblings of a street-corner bum. The entire album is a collection of experiments - concluding with a curveball. "Gone for Good" is quiet, peaceful, and acoustic - sad, but sweet. It's so unlike the rest of the album, but it's absolutely beautiful.
If you're musically open-minded and looking for something out of the ordinary, Yes is the album to buy. You won't be disappointed. It'll give you a great buzz - and you won't have to deal with the headache the next morning.
Addicted? YES.......2005-02-26
There is only one dud on the whole thing (Free Love). The rest is inspired and unique.
"Honey White", "Yes" and "Super Sex" are the highlights.

From Amazon.ca
Twenty years into her career, Holly Cole has released a disc that may well have surpassed anything else she has previously recorded. Much of the kudos goes to producer Greg Cohen--famous for working with jazz legends Ornette Coleman and Bill Frisell--who has wisely brought in individual jazz players (rather than a preexisting big band) and let each contribute to the overall sound. The result is an auditory sense of being in an underground New York jazz club, surrounded by world-class instrumentalists and one sultry singer. On past CDs, the Toronto-based Cole often broke up the smoothness by occasionally emitting a Broadway style of singing, taking listeners on a musical ride that was more Liza than lounge. On this self-titled disc, she is unprecendentedly relaxed, her voice languidly drifting along with the musicians rather than trying to sing over them. As a result, tracks such as "You're My Thrill" and "I Will Wait for You" are highlighted by her hushed softness, while "Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries" showcases Cole's sass, mixing it up between hot clarinet, guitar, and trombone licks. Her song choices are also strong. Cole culls from legendary songwriters (Cole Porter's "It's Alright with Me," Irving Berlin's "Reaching for the Moon," Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Waters of March") and additionally, has contributed her own track "Larger Than Life" which fits perfectly in the smooth, jazzy mix. --Denise SheppardCustomer Reviews:

Howard Hanson was an unabashed Romantic and this collection of some of his shorter works shows him in that light, brightly. The longest work here, at 16 minutes, is the concerto for organ, harp, and strings: it begins with great mystery, quietly, with the harp popping out of the string texture frequently; there follow solos for the organ which lead back to the earlier vagueness--then all the forces are called into play, and the piece ends with a solo for the organ. The "Nymphs and Satyr Ballet Suite" has lovely solos for a bassoon and clarinet; "Fantasy Variations" for piano and strings is a solemn piece, very cinematic in structure. "Serenade for Flute, Harp, and Strings" is influenced by French impressionism and is very lovely; "Summer Seascape" for viola and strings is both stark and attractive; "Pastorale for Oboe" is also impressionist and has a nice, solitary feel to it. The performances under Daniel Spalding are superb with each soloist worthy of his or her assignment. A special treat for those who love American music. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:
A Composer Again Getting Some Respect.......2006-08-04
The Organ Concerto has had a life of sorts, but it has rarely been played in its original form for organ and full symphony orchestra. It was recast for strings and organ and is occasionally trotted out primarily in church settings. It was written for musicians at Hanson's own Eastman School, where he was the director for decades, and premiered by organist Eastman's Harold Gleason and later played and recorded by an Eastman successor, David Craighead. In one movement it is in typical Hansonian fantasia format with a misterioso beginning and a livelier middle section leading to a development section of sorts making use of the first section's materials. It ends briskly after an exuberant virtuoso pedal cadenza. Organist Joseph Jackson, playing a fine new Reuter organ at Philadelphia's First Presbyterian Church, is given sensitive support by the Philadelphia Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra under Daniel Spalding.
The succeeding pieces are slight in comparison to the Organ Concerto, but nonetheless charming and interesting in turn. All are tuneful, romantic in tone, and expertly written. The slightest of these works is the 1979 'Nymphs and Satyr' suite which is the last thing Hanson wrote. It is rather thrown together, by my lights, by combining some scraps and independent pieces he'd written including a Fantasy for clarinet and chamber orchestra and a Scherzo for bassoon and chamber orchestra. Neither is particularly memorable -- well, that's not entirely true, the almost simple-minded changes wrung on a second inversion triad by the solo bassoon in the scherzo has a tenacity in the mind's ear that is just this side of irritating. The soloists, Doris Hall-Gulati, clarinet, and Holly Blake, bassoon, are excellent. 'Fantasy Variation on a Theme of Youth, for Piano and Strings' (1951) was commissioned by Northwestern University for their centenary. Hanson fittingly took a theme he'd written as a student there in 1917 and made this set of variations in which the piano is more an obbligato instrument than a concerto-like soloist. There are four variations that, while all based on the somber theme, differ remarkably from each other. Variation form in the guise of elaboration of themes was particularly congenial for Hanson, and this is an attractive if rather slight work.
'Serenade for Flute, Harp and Strings' (1945) and 'Pastorale for Oboe, Harp and Strings' (1948-49) were both written as presents for Hanson's wife -- he had not married Margaret Nelson until almost he was almost fifty, in 1946. The latter work was originally for oboe and piano but he orchestrated it in 1950 for Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra; the legendary Marcel Tabuteau was the oboist. Each work is rhapsodic, almost impressionistic and yet Sibelian as well. Andrew Bolotowski, flute, and Jonathan Blumenfeld, oboe, are the fine soloists. Solo harpist in these two works as well as the organ concerto is Jacqueline Pollard.
A surprisingly effective work, if obscure (which simply means I'd never heard of it until I read about it in Walter Simmons's monumental book about six American neoromanticists 'Voices in the Wilderness'), is the 'Summer Seascape No. 2 for Viola and Strings' (1965). It is called 'No. 2' because the middle movement of Hanson's 'Bold Island Suite' is also called 'Summer Seascape' and started life as an independent piece. This is a starkly beautiful tone poem in which the plangent tones of the solo viola stand in contrast to the silken, yet sometimes pungent, string mass. It is not hard to picture the dramatic Maine seacoast when listening to this short work. The playing of violist Adriana Linares is meltingly beautiful.
This is a definite must for those who love the big romantic canvases of Hanson's music but who are not familiar with his works in smaller forms. Sound is exemplary.

Best Of Buddy.......2007-03-04
I often do this when you get a particularly good tune,i analize it and i want to know what the hell makes it sound so good.
Another 2 songs from that session were It Doesnt Matter Anymore and True Love Ways, both songs are masterpeices. There is a number of his tunes you can do that with,Heartbeat is one,and the excellent lead guitar, nothing over the top, just precision guitar playing. He had a sound studio in his house and even though on todays standard it may seem antiquated,he definitly produced the goods.
Heartbeat is a fine example of no computerization polishing. You can hear the strumming of the guitar, and there is nothing better than hearing that human side to a song.If you close your mind from the vocals and listen to the guitar, you realy appreciate this song better.
Maybe Baby was done with The Crickets, and there is something about the sound thats just brilliant.
Oh Boy gets you moving,i wish you luck if you can play this song and not tap your foot.
What about Rave On,that Bluesy bass is excellent, but why was this song so short. Its So Easy is another fine example of excellent guitar work.
What is it about that song?Just precision thats the only way i can describe it.
Peggie Sue is probably his crowning glory. That drum beat echoing in the background is a sensation.
That'll Be The Day started it all, even though his record company wanted to scrap it.And in a brief 2 years this man was gone, how sad is that?
I dont care how old it is,his music was excellent.
Another song i have to mention is Everyday, that has a real catchy sing along tune and is a favorite also.
There is a fine collection of other songs here as well.

Buddy wouldn't like what's going on here.......2006-05-17
As for the tunes:
01. Midnight Shift - perhaps "Blue Days, Black Nights" would be a better choice.
02. Rock Around WIth Ollie Vee - CLASSIC
03. That'll Be The Day - CLASSIC
04. I'm Lookin' For Someone To Love - CLASSIC
05. Words Of Love - CLASSIC
06. Not Fade Away - CLASSIC
07. Everyday - CLASSIC
08. Listen To Me - it's a "classic" as well, but perhaps placed too close to Words Of Love.
09. Oh Boy! - CLASSIC
10. Peggy Sue - CLASSIC
11. I'm Gonna Love You Too - not one of my favorites, perhaps "Tell Me How" would've been better.
12. Look At Me - not the best choice, I think "Lonesome Tears" would've been superior.
13. Maybe Baby - CLASSIC
14. Rave On - CLASSIC
15. Fool's Paradise - a good choice, but not a "classic."
16. Take Your Time - not the best choice, I think "Reminiscing" would've been smarter.
17. Well...All Right - CLASSIC
18. Think It Over - CLASSIC
19. Early In The Morning - CLASSIC
20. Heartbeat - CLASSIC
21. It's So Easy - CLASSIC
22. Wishing - it's not a classic tune, but should have been.
23. Love's Made A Fool Of You - another good, but not classic tune.
24. True Love Ways - CLASSIC
25. It Doesn't Matter Anymore - CLASSIC
26. Raining In My Heart - it's probably just me, but this is not one of my favorites. Especially to conclude this collection. Where's "Peggy Sue Got Married" anyway?

An amazing work of art.......2006-09-15
The more you listen, the more your stereo can render, the more you will feel the passion in this album. The pacing and verve of each song holds its own within context of the larger album. I read somewhere that Holly and crew tried to do the songs in one take to keep them edgy. They succeeded. Every song takes you to a place in your past, for better or for worse. There are some songs on this album I cannot listen to while others never let me go. Even parts of the nonsensicle cuts will take you somewhere.
I carry this disk with me on stereo testing trips. The cuts can sound mushy or flat or dry or endlessly deep and wonderful. There is a lot of material below where most subwoofers go and many subs simply mush all the bass together. There are also a lot of delicacies in the back of songs. I am always suprised how I will find some voice or tinkle in the back when a cut is played on a super-audiophile system. There is actually a fair amount of background discussion in many takes if you can render it.
This is an album heavy into the art side of music. It departs from Holly's torch song jazz style on her other great albums, "Don't Smoke in Bed" and "Blame it on my Youth". Grab a glass of Amaretto and slump into a big overstuffed chair.

Excellent, but makes you work for it..........2006-01-02
Having listened to all styles of the trio's music - blues, R&B, "pop", and...whatever you want to call Ms. Coles "unique" realizations of songs, this would fall moslty in that last category. Fortunately, it's where she (and the trio) excels the most.
If you are new to The Holly Cole Trio, they are a jazz/based ensemble that excels in REALLY digging into the zeitgeist of dark, poignant, or even slightly scary song writing. In other words, the writing of songwriters such as Tom Waits. They both are from the "meloncholy" category of personality types (rather than phlegmatic, choleric, or sanguine. The "sanguines" are the folks in the other reviews that complain that this recording should be more "peppy!" They just don't get it, and that's OK. Try Britney Spears or Bare Naked Ladies - very peppy! This recording is for the "meloncholies", or those that desire to peer into that side of their personalities)
MS. Cole has the uncanny ability to COMPLETELY own a lyric and all its depth of meaning. Then, she has the voice to interpret it with exquisite nuance and laser-like delivery. Make no mistake - every nuance she brings to the song is carefully planned and executed, down to her breathinig, lip smacking, growls, and even out-of-tune delivery. Her method - she tends to slow things down a bit, thin out the arrangement (sometimes just her and the bass), and then deliver the "story" of the song as if she had sidled up, placed her arms around your neck, looked you unwaveringy in the eye, and then begins to sing. I haver rarely ever had repeated repeated shivers run up and down my spine listening to a recorded vocalist, but it happens here, and more with each listening. Its at once both an intimate and mind-expanding experience.
ONE CAVEAT - this is an amazingly rendered recording, as are most of her works. Its the reason Audio Installation professionals ALWAYS have their Holly Cole CD's with them when they test out their work - the stark clarity of her voice, the amazing depths of the bass (down to 10hz), the purity of the piano micing, and the very present rendering of the rare guest musicians are all reference-standard. Because of their detailed sparseness, much is lost if listening on a a less-than-stellar system. Part of the talent of the trio lies in the wonderful subtleties they bring to their performances, and much of it is lost in typical "boom box" systems, car systems, or computer systems. I believe this is why some folks may be led to say things such as "needs more pep!', or God forbid, "This is boring".
If you have at least some meloncholy tendencies, or are a fan ot Tom Waits, or like the song stylists of the early part of the last century, you will love this recording. Buy it, and let Ms. Cole and her trio take you places you may have never been before.

Smoky Jazz Interpretations.......2003-09-24
I'm a long-time Tom Waits fan, but I was previously unfamiliar with Holly Cole. Waits' songs are well-suited to new interpretations, as is apparent on Frank's Wild Years when he performs 2 different arrangements of a couple of songs, or on Big Time, where he presents strikingly different arrangements of several songs, most notably "Telephone Call From Istanbul." Given that plus the haunting poetry of his best lyrics, a jazz songbook of original interpretations makes at least as much sense for Waits' work as for that of any living songwriter.
Cole's expressive intrepretations deliver the goods, too. "I Don't Wanna Grow Up" receives a slow, haunting arrangement that provides a gorgeous contrast to the uptempo original. She cleans up "Frank's Theme," providing a simpler but more dramatic rendition that bring out the emotions in the song much more effectively than the accordion-drenched original. Cole's voice brings a smoky swing to "Tango Til They're Sore." And her sultry version of "Temptation" alone would justify buying this album.
