Harvest Showdown [Import]

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Throughout its late 60s and early 70s heyday, EMI's Harvest label, a launch pad for its progressive and more experimental artists, regularly enticed curious punters with a series of budget-priced, eye-grabbing sampler albums. Times may have moved on, but some traditions never completely die. 35 years after The Move signed to Harvest, along comes 'Harvest Showdown', featuring the group and its various offshoots. It's no mere random trawl through back catalogues; on the contrary, several of the tracks are either alternate and previously unissued versions or rarities that have never been released before on CD - or released anywhere.Features 14 total tracks performed by artists Move (featuring Jeff Lynne & Roy Wood), Electric Light Orchestra, Roy Wood & Wizzard with the tracks including 'Ball Park Incident', 'Forever', 'Buffalo Station' (Edited Version), 'Dear Elaine', '10538 Overture' (USA Radio Mono Mix), 'Until Your Moma's Gone' and more. EMI. 2005.

I remember once reading a review of the vinyl-only U.S.A. "Beatles Rarities" many years ago,in which it was described as "Not so much rarities as footnotes",and that description also applies to this collection of 1970-73 tracks by Electric Light Orchestra,Roy Wood,Wizzard & The Move. You get edited single versions("Tonight","Mr.Radio","Do Ya") mono mixes made for radio("10538 Overture",unedited, and probably just summed down from the stereo album mix),B-sides("The Carlsburg Special","Music to Commit Suicide to",neither of which are particularly rare, since they're available on other CD's),a slightly different unreleased mix of "Showdown",unreleased instrumental backing tracks("Roll Over Beethoven" as hidden bonus track and "King Henry's B*ll*cks" A.K.A. "In Old England Town(instrumental version)") and several common album & single tracks, albeit now with studio chat and/or countoffs at the start("Forever","Ball Park Incident","Dear Elaine" & "Until Your Momma's Gone").But the main feature in this collection is the excellent remastered sound from newly discovered first generation master tapes.but, overall,it's a good introduction to the music of these artists, and if you're a hard core fan & completist, then you'll want it.
