Singer-songwriter Todd Snider is nothing if not an individualist. For his trouble, he's alienated more than one label, not to mention a few potential fans. Happy to Be Here, his Oh Boy debut, follows three 1990s albums for MCA that seemed to produce a very polar response: he developed a strong cult following, although many Americana fans, those predisposed to like him, seemed oddly turned off by his smug sarcasm. Happy seems like just the album to break him, however. Produced by Ray Kennedy, the record is sonically rich, well developed, and diverse, and Snider shows a knack for surprisingly accessible pop melodies. Snider pulls no punches in his lyrics--whether being ironic and cynical or sweet and sincere--and he uses an array of musical settings: there are gentle, romantic ballads boasting only acoustic guitar and harmonica; scorching, scathing country-rockers; rambling folk stories; and horn-fueled blues workouts. Snider's voice is full bodied, emotive, and resonant, even if his pain-and-twang sometimes seems a tad bit forced. Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

hard to pick a favorite todd snider record. they are all fantastic, but at the moment i believe this is my favorite of his. song for song this is his strongest batch. see him live if you can. he is one of the most entertaining live performers i've seen in a long time.

each song is a story, and the story is good. it doesn't even matter what type of music you like, because you're going to get it all. by the second song, i knew it was going to be my new favorite album.

I just can't believe he's not better known.......2004-02-29

I'll admit I came into my listening and buying of Todd Snider CDs thinking he was just witty with some "funny" songs. I was absolutely right about the witty and funny part, but I soon realized there was insight and great songwriting in even the most humorous of his songs. And, of course, they're not all humorous. This CD has turned out to be my favorite by Snider. For me, "Backbone Tavern", "Keep Off the Grass" and "Just in Case" are about as good as it gets. The music is diverse and always quality. When you begin to love the songs as much as I have, get his latest live CD and learn the stories behind the stories! They're great!

Get "Happy" with Snider.......2003-01-15

"Happy to Be Here," is another strong collection of tunes from singer-songwriter Todd Snider. Snider firmly straddles the line between rock and country, though he seems to be moving more in the latter direction as his career progresses. He's also toned down his smart aleky sense of humor a bit, though that's not necessarily a good thing.

Snider's sound and style varies from song to song on this album. Typically for Snider, his political/topical songs ("Betty was Black," the title track) tend to be the weakest. He's at his best when his observations are more personal, like on the ballads "Lonely Girl," and "Missing You," and the peppier numbers "Keep off the Grass" and "What's Wrong With You." At its best Snider's music at often recalls a young John Prine.

Overall, a solid album from an excellent singer-songwriter.

Incredible Live Album.......2002-02-10

This incredible concert (which i attended) benefitting The Actors' Fund of America, contains some absolute MUST performances for any Broadway collector.

For me, the highlights are HUGH PANARO ("It Never Was You"), NANCY DUSSAULT ("It's Him") and TIM CURRY singing "Surabaya Johnny" in German!

Loretta Divine, Brock Peters, they're all great!

long time favorite.......2005-08-28

my 8yr old didn't remember these songs from our gymboree days, but i did, and as we cleaned her room and sang along with the tape i couldn't help but smile, and enjoy the familiar tunes with happy (but not creepy happy) lyrics. they are fun and i hope to hear them again soon. my 8yr old said, i like these songs. how do you describe kid's music? it's peppy, cheerful and funny sure to make the little ones get up and boogie. or get down and boogie as the case may be.

My 5 year old daughter loves this CD. She has 4 of Parachute Express's CD's, but this one is probably her favorite. Happy To Be Here, High-5-Ious, Smooth Movin' Boggie Express, and Polka Dots, Checks and Stripes are her favorite songs because of the infectious beats and very singable words. But she really likes all of the songs on this CD. This is also a CD that I like listening to. We will sing the songs together, and clap together on Smooth Movin' Boggie and give each other High 5's during High-5-Ious. This CD was well worth the money.

This CD always brings a smile to my face as well as children I'm with. It is very upbeat and the lyrics are witty. Many of the songs have motions that go with them. In my house, we don't know these and we still enjoy the music.

Unless you went to this concert and want a reason to remember the evening, I can't imagine why you'd want to own the CD. It has all the disadvantages of a live concert (acoustics are poor), and applause occurs on top of the performances. The interpretations of the music by the vocalists Tune and McGovern are poor. Save yourself the money....
