3 out of 5 stars Nyman's Two Pieces.......2007-01-31

This CD has two pieces by english composer Michael Nyman. The first is the score for the movie "The Piano". This is a well known piece, and its cliched, new age-y undertones made it not very good one in my opinion. The second is more promising: called MGV (french for Music at Great Speed), it was commisioned apparently for the unveiling of a high speed train in Europe, and this great piece really suggests of trains and railways.

5 out of 5 stars One disk or two disks?.......2006-05-14

I agree with the two previous reviewers that The Piano Concerto and MGV are great music to listen to any time. I also found myself playing the CD over and over. Two enthralling performances.

However, the version I own includes a second CD with short tracks from other Argo releases. (Listed above for listening.) I also played that one over and over again and finally began searching for CDs by those composers. It took forever to find works by the Fitkin brothers (?), but they were well worth the search.

The Piano Concerto and MGV are must haves for any fan of minimalism and especially of Nyman, but try to get the version with two disks. It will open your eyes to many more composers in the same genre.

5 out of 5 stars Emotional height achieved.......2002-02-03

This album contains two pieces of music: first being the full piano concerto, based on soundtrack. The second is an orchestral music called MGV, which was written for the inauguration of the TGV Northern Europe Train Line. Opinions towards this album has been mixed, reflecting the divided opinions among classical listeners towards minimalist music in general. Again, like most minimalist music (especially Michael Nyman's work), you really cannot rely on reviewers' opinions alone. You must decide for yourself.

In my humble opinions, Nyman has successfully transformed the various sountracks in into one piano concerto. The level of technical skills required to play the Piano Concerto has been raised, obviously to accomodate the fact that a professional pianist (Kathryn Scott) rather than an amateur pianist/professional actress (Holly Hunter) was playing the piece. The emotional impact has not been compromised by this transformation, and the influence of Scottish folk tune is still very evident.

In the second piece, MGV, Nyman took the audience through an imaginery train journey, with emphasis on the sense of adventure, wonder and triumph. One can see in it Nyman's intention to celebrate human achievement and human triumph over odds.

On both counts, this album has successfully achieved what most minimalist music strives to achieve - an elation of human senses and starting the fire of human imaginations.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and enjoyable.......2000-10-24

After purchasing this CD I found myself playing it nonstop for some time. I was familiar with some of Nyman's other music and wanted more material to listen to, and this fit the bill perfectly. The piano concerto is largely taken from the songs he wrote for the movie "The Piano" cast into a 20th century concerto form. The performance is clear and well balanced. Some may find it a bit repeatitive and really lacking a continuous development of the themes, but those who appreciate minimalist music will enjoy the cd. MGV is based around driving rhythms throughout the piece, very similar to the music written in the Peter Greenway films for which Nyman is most famous. More minimalist than the concerto, I think this is the better of the two offerings (especially the first section). As a whole the two compositions complement each other very well, making it another great album from the Argo label.

4 out of 5 stars Fierce instrumental genius in between psychedelic haze.......2006-05-24

At times ripping deeper then most fusion jams ever dare go, the overall effects are again sometimes weighed down by the reluctant lulls of drugged out, less inspired distortionesque improv- even so, which is demonstrated with more eloquence then in future releases. With these two seminal albums fused together though, one can hardly pause from admiring the daunting collaborations each band member intuitively made in order to synchronize some of the most jazzily adept experimental rock music ever laid down. Some of it's slower(free-form) parts may alienate the melodic minded, sober listener, although it would be a crime to not own this compilation if at all one is instrumentally inclined.

5 out of 5 stars 2 of the best in 1!.......2003-01-31

This collection features all of Soft Machine's 4 & 5 albums. These albums are the band's peak instramental recordings done in 70 through 72. If you are not familiar with Soft Machine, get Vol 2 first, then make sure to get 3, 4 & 5, and 6, then skip to Bundles. Great spin!

    5 out of 5 stars Architecture thawed.......2002-08-13

Since their release in 1971&2, 4 & 5 were my least favorite Softs, and for years I ignored them. Big mistake, but I was young. Then I found an Italian cassette compiliation with Teeth, put the tape into the car player and was blown away. I was finally ready for these demanding tunes.

Most rock/pro/prog/jazz pieces that excite the listener do so through their spontaneity and energy. Classical compositions usually achieve their effect through structure and discipline. (There are many exceptions--Robert Fripp, John Cage e.g.--and of course all music worth hearing has some of both). Teeth, though, achieves a perfect balance of form and freedom, measure and passion--partly in Ratledge's composition, partly in the superlative playing of the group. The other compositions on 4 are also _____ (does "superlative" have a superlative form?), though they tend a bit more toward order (Hopper's tunes) or free-form (Dean's). 5's also wonderful but a bit colder, anticipating the icily perfect surfaces of 6.

This review is awfully vague, but these albums are so musical that I feel like a pre-teen babbling in a Britney chat room when I try to describe them. So just buy the CD and play it a bunch so that it can get into your subconsciousness. Then dismiss my hyperbolic adolescent fawnings and put the CD in a time capsule. Listen to as much music as you can for a couple of decades. Finally, open the capsule and play Teeth. You'll see what I mean.

4 out of 5 stars The sound of a band in transition.......2000-10-27

Soft Machine's albums from THIRD (1970) through to SIX (1973) are of a transitional nature and see the band moving from psychedelia to fusion via avant garde and free form structures. 4 was originally released in February 1971 and continues where THIRD left off. It is the first Soft Machine album to be entirely instrumental. It is the last Soft Machine album to feature Robert Wyatt on drums and the first to feature Roy Babbington on bass (although he did not become an official member of the band until SEVEN). Nick Evans (trombone) and Jimmy Hastings (alto flute, bass clarinet) also reappear from the THIRD line-up, and Marc Charig (cornet) and Alan Skidmore (tenor saxophone) make their debut. The standout tracks are those contributed by bassist Hugh Hopper. His four-part 'Virtually' suite originally filled Side 2 of the album (tracks 4 to 7 on this CD).

5, originally released in June 1972 continued the move towards jazz-rock. This album features Robert Wyatt's successors on drums, Phil Howard and John Marshall. Elton Dean broadens his instrumental scope to include electric piano, as well as his favoured alto saxophone and saxello. Roy Babbington appears again on Side 2 of the original album (tracks 11 to 14). Howard drums on Side 1 (tracks 8 to 10) and Marshall on Side 2 (tracks 11 to 14). Marshall's performance is an ear-opening tour-de-force and gives hints of the band's further steps towards fusion. He really makes you sit up and take notice after Howard's performance. The best compositions this time around come from the pen of Mike Ratledge, and include the beautiful 'Drop' (which features dripping water recorded excellently over the stereo picture: try it on headphones!). This was Elton Dean's final appearance with Soft Machine.

When you hear the methodical full-body slams (or so they seem) delivered by pianist Chris Brown on Henry Cowell's Dynamic Motion, it amazes that the composer scripted the piece in 1914. Exactly when the world was hitting its modern stride, when speed was vital, Cowell was plunging listeners into the most dense piano music ever composed, even using the term cluster to describe how the piano ought to be played in his works. This collection of 26 Cowell pieces focuses on the easily contained modern era, all of it composed before 1930 and most before 1925. Don't let that mislead you, though; these are some of American music's most maverick moments, times when Cowell made himself perfectly clear in declaring a new language for the keyboard. The pieces, while resolutely American in their declarative, independent character, are also painfully lovely, each suggesting (and many making abundantly clear) the profusion of tonal and atonal possibilities in different clusters. The performers are an adventurous lot, with Brown and Joseph Kubera the best known. But Sorrel Hays and Sarah Cahill do equally tremendous things with these works, exploding them for their full interpretive potential (as Cowell would want). This is one of the great piano-music releases of the 1990s, intrepid and sonically outstanding. --Andrew Bartlett

            2 out of 5 stars Unlistenable sound.......2007-06-05

Yes, fine, I'm an audiophile as well as a music lover. The performance if fine but the sound is deplorable. The sound is much too "close up", by which I mean it sounds like your ear is about 6" for each instrument.
I have the hybrid SACD version of the recording but the sound is awful regardless of whether the SACD or CD layer is played.

            1 out of 5 stars Poor recording!.......2005-07-02

The music and the performance on this disc are fine. However, this recording is absolutely unlistenable for the strangest reason. It sounds like one of the performers is *sniffling* throughout the entire recording!

5 out of 5 stars A great new piano played by a lesser known master.......2004-12-31

I wish David Stanhope were as well known as the man who bought the first of these monster pianos, Rowen Atkinson, a.k.a. Mr. Bean, alias Black Adder. This 2.9 meter, 97 key, four on the floor (pedals) aircraft carrier is the Stuart & Sons concert grand. Stanhope puts the mighty Stuart through its paces on this one. And mighty like a rose, not just power. These are difficult and lovely selections, rarely performed, all linked to more popular pieces; and yet genuine in their own right.

              4 out of 5 stars (No title)........2000-12-07

The pianist here, David Stanhope, claims to only 'occasionally finds time to practice the piano.' How blessed he is then, with the natural ability to tackle and conquer some of the most formidable peaks of the virtuoso repertoire with an ease and grandeur that brings shame and bewilderment to even the most celebrated pianists. One notable instance, the Godowsky Passacaglia, which Horowitz gave up in despair, claiming he needed at least six hands to perform it. And what a massive and masterly aplomb Stanhope brings to the work, especially in the final pages; although it seems to lack in some of the mind-numbing inspiration apparent in Carlo Grante Music & Arts recording. The Busoni, if not intimate, is loyal and joyous. In the Chopin-Godowsky , every intricacy is spun off with dazzling fluency, but there isn't the wit one usually associates with our beloved Popsie. The Liszt Beethoven 8th symphony transcription really is Allegro vivace con brio; it's exuberant and taken at an incredible clip, though lacking in clarity... An excellent disc, really, even if inward-looking tenderness is seemingly substituted with meer technique. But what a meer technique it is!

5 out of 5 stars Great performances on a superb instrument.......2000-11-19

David Stanhope is a conductor, composer, and sometime pianist. It seems a little counterintuitive that someone so obviously occupied with other matters would choose to record a disk of some of the heaviest knucklecrunchers in the repertoire. But make no mistake -- the performances are hardly those of a part-time pianist. This release features a recording on the fascinating Stuart piano, designed by Australian Wayne Stuart. The Stuart's timbre is immediately distinctive -- the sound is light, but satisfyingly full-bodied, giving an exemplary clarity to this densely detailed music.

The disk opens with what may be one of the best performances of the Bach-Busoni St Anne ever recorded. Stanhope's performance has an exciting drive to it -- differentiating it from Demidenko's somewhat ponderous version -- but it never sounds rushed as Geoffrey Madge's does in his Dante release. The Stuart really suits this work; one hears, for example, the trills in the prelude that are often obscured. We then are indulged with a selection of Godowsky's Studies on the Chopin Etudes, each of which is prefaced with the Chopin original. These are rendered with style and aplomb and, once again, the piano sounds great. Following is the huge Godowsky Passacaglia. Stanhope, both in his performance and his notes, makes light of its fearsome reputation, breasting its big challenges and closing with weighty, sonorous chords. The disk closes with the Beethoven-Liszt Symphony No. 8. As Stanhope points out in his notes, conducting tradition often causes some of the tempi in this work to be a bit slack, especially in the first movement. He makes his point tellingly with a thrilling first movement, and backs up to do the same in the finale -- while missing none of the inner movements' wit or charm. This is a very enjoyable disk. I invite you to listen to it, and then call Tall Poppies and urge them to commission another disk from this fascinating musician.
